Well, have at it
Let's try and keep in mind the playoffs are in April, not November. I still think we're going to hear a fair amount of idiocy, though.

Eh. The season doesn't start popping until after the new year, anyway.
What I think is amusing though are these people acting like Hossa is a pitcher undergoing Tommy John surgery. “ZOMG! We just signed him forever and he’s broken!!!”
I’m sure he’ll be firing on all cylinders by mid-Jan.

Good
Go under the knife, get it fixed and move on. This team is good enough to win without him.

Meh. We’ve got him for a decade+, might as well make sure he’s as healthy as possible before we get started. If he played through this last year, I can’t wait to see what the new-and-improved Hossa looks like wearing the four feathers.

It Didn't Happen During This Year's Playoffs
Straight from the Land of Kid Rock, despair, and Eminem.
Wings general manager Ken Holland said Marian Hossa did not injure his shoulder during the playoffs as indicated in a story in the Chicago Daily Herald. Holland said Hossa had a slightly torn rotator cuff when the Wings signed him on July 2, 2008, but it wasn’t anything significant.
“He was hurt before he got to us,‘’ Holland said. "Our doctors looked at him and we had conversations about whether to have surgery. Our doctors recommended he should have something done at some point but it’s something he can play with.’’

Nice quote, very interesting stuff...
Slightly torn all of last season nd he still scored 40 goals. Hopefully this surgery will put him back at 100%.

Totally off topic here
but has anyone seen the trailer for the new movie District 9? I’ve never heard of it before today, but it looks bad ass.

Holy Balls.
That looks absolutely sensational.

I didn't even know Peter Jackson was making another movie.
Is it based off a comic or book? Alien movies scare the crap out of me but I’ll still go see this.
by Sportsgal on Jul 23, 2009 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's based on
A short film called Alive in Joberg.
by Hawks82 on Jul 23, 2009 8:46 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
I just read this guy who made Alive in Joberg is directing the Halo movie. Would I know all of this stuff right away if I was a Comic-Con nerd?
by Sportsgal on Jul 23, 2009 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes
I think so. Nerds have ESP for stuff like that.
I saw the trailer a few days ago, and it reminded me of this miniseries that was on in the early/mid 80’s called V and V:The Final Battle. That’s some nerdy shit to remember.
by Hawks82 on Jul 23, 2009 9:10 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
Oh I totally remember V...
Only because my parents watched it but wouldn’t let me watch it because they knew it would give me nightmares. Aliens have freaked me out ever since my dad let me watch War of the Worlds at 5yrs old.
by Sportsgal on Jul 23, 2009 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
V
The original Author has written a second book that takes place 20 years later and is being made into a new mini-series/movie. The book was pretty good, and supposedly they have alot of the original cast coming back.
I actually have V on DVD.

Hate to distract
From the comic book stuff, but….. I agree with the comment above about this not being a big deal. When I heard he racked up 40 goals in spite of being hurt I was even more impressed. To start our season, we have more forwards than we have space for and that needs to shake itself out. I can’t shake the mental image that this is kind of like that scene in batman where the joker drops a broken pool cue in front of three guys and says he only has room for two and wants them to fight it out. I worry a bit that Hossa may earn a bit of resentment in the locker room for the cloud he is bringing, but I also believe that will quickly disappear when he starts to score some goals.
by NKLHD on Jul 23, 2009 9:26 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
You stuck
With the comic book theme with the Joker reference so thanks for keeping the trend alive.
I’m not sure there’s going to be any animosity between Hossa and his teammates. This the time to a handle a problem like this and I’m sure most of the team is ok with it.

I'm not panicking
but I can’t help but think about another Czech winger with a bad shoulder who is also four years younger that plays for a team not too far from here.. But this is, from what I understand, his first injury so I am not panicking. And we can win without him. I am not panicking.
Really. No panic. Let’s call it “concern.”

That other guy
didn’t put up 40 goals when his shoulder was hurt either. I think some people were saying Marty should have gotten a nod for the Masterson because his shoulder was so bad at one point.

That Czech also has
an ouchy groin and may or may not be fighting the concussion bug for the rest of his career. These comparisons really need to stop. There is absolutely no similarity between these two guys other than who drafted them.

He’ll be fine. the only downfall is we have to wait to see him debut. I can’t wait for Bears camp to start, so the writers have Jay Cutler to fixate on for a while.

oh great
now puck daddy is saying hossa wasn’t even given a physical. he only got the physical 9 days AFTER he was signed on July 10.
i was so excited for the hawks new 09-10 season but this is just too much. you’d think a guy being given a 12 year 60+ million contract would at least get checked by team doctors.
by heyrocky on Jul 24, 2009 2:16 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Well if you read the quote in that story, it sounds like (in the case of his shoulder) that it really didn’t matter. Unless they are just trying to cover up their stupidity (which, at this point, could be possible), they already knew about his shoulder injury and the physical just confirmed what they supposedly already knew.
Wysh should have saved that part of the story until tomorrow or Monday, though, so he and everyone else could have dragged this saga out even longer. I mean, two pieces of drama (surgery and no physical) on the Hawks in the same day???
by Geoffhawk on Jul 24, 2009 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just read the puckdaddy piece
Well, we may look like the Clampett’s, but I still like our team A LOT! Having thought it over some, I have decided that if I was GM for this year at the start of free agency, I would still take a chance on Panda even if I knew he needed surgery. If we didn’t, someone else would have. Had we sucked again this year, people would have accepted our taking Panda and said little about it. Now that everyone is a Hawk proctologist though, it’s unacceptable and we are morons. Admittedly, this is a VERY ballsy move to commit that much money to a guy you know needs a retread before he can even play for you. Still, I believe he will more than earn his keep. The thought occurred to me today that no matter we do, we will still be looked at as fucking idiots until we win a cup. To the people in the seats (especially in other arenas) this looks bad. From the ice side, I bet there quite a few players in the NHL right now who would still love to come here.
by NKLHD on Jul 24, 2009 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unless the Hawks have a moron for a lawyer...
Somewhere in the contract is most likely clause that voids it if the player hides an injury or condition from the club, physical or not. I’m sure the Hawks knew beforehand and all that.

Last year was nothing but happy-happy all off season, and the Hawks, while it was an exciting ride, didn’t really win anything last year. I’ll gladly trade all of the drama this off-season for a parade next June.

by Geoffhawk on Jul 24, 2009 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Like there was no drama with Havlat
He was injured his entire stay. Even last year when he was playing, we were all just waiting for an injury, and we got it in the conference finals. So what if the Hawks signed Hossa and knew he may need shoulder surgery? Hossa will still have more points next year than Havlat had this year, so it will be a trade up, as we all already knew.
I still say Versteeg and Buff for Burns.

Comparison to the Hawks getting Bobby Orr???
(Comments below the story on the Comcast site)
What an awful comparison. Wasn’t Orr, like…57-years-old with knees made of metal and wood when the Hawks got him then?
Yeah, this Hossa pick up is exaaaaaaaactly the same. Get a clue guy.
