How's this for the "trade speculation of the day"?
I saw this trade speculation in the comments of some article on yahoo.
-San Jose gets Cristobal Huet,, #1 draft pick and Jason Blake
-Toronto gets Kris Versteeg, Brian Campbell and Jonathan Cheechoo
-Hawks get Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau and Tomas Kaberle
We'd save maybe a few mil but gain some age. As much as I hate Huet, and like Nabby, I'm not so sure I'd like this idea. I'm still very concerned about dumping Sopel's $2.3 million albatross. So, all this collectively might save the team $4 million.

Wouldn't be a fan of this trade
Four million dollars would probably pay for Keith’s raise next season, but I don’t think this is how we should get the money.
I don’t really like the idea of losing Campbell for Kaberle. I’m sure I’d love seeing Kaberle on the ice, but I think that the skating abilities of Campbell complement the Hawks more than what Kaberle would bring to the Hawks.
Who would give up the number one pick to San Jose? I’m really not a fan of giving up picks, so I’d hate to do this for just four million of salary.
forsure pull the string on this one tallon!

trading away youth?? versteeg – big deal the guy has a half decent yr and they throw over 3M at him. ya i understand hes real young but you have to give someone up to get someone. keep that 3M so it can go towards toews, kane and keith and then seabrook the following year. we have skille and beech to step in. versteeg came out of nowhere now one of these guys can step up. its either big bfy or versteeg gotta go they each make 3M.
huet is not a #1 goalie, maybe on atlanta and LA and TB. nabokov is one of the top 5 goalies in the league, he can definitely take us much farther in the playoffs then huet any day.
as for kaberle who is average at best, ride him out this year he’ll have simlar numbers to campbell anyway (who didnt have a great yr and who made some dumb plays in the playoffs) then trade him on draft day like he was supposed to be moved this year, some team will forsure take him. just like hackerar said, marleau is off the books next yr so we let him walk to free cap space.
as for our first round pick, we’ll be picking around 27th spot again which guarantees us a guy who is gonna be a work in progress anyway. so we can trade it for the first time in yrs its not really that important of a pick for us.
this is the utmost important time for our franchise to act accordingly and sign toews, kane, keith next year for 8-12 yrs each and seabrook the following year then you have that core together years!!
taking a quick look at the numbers
I think this trade would actually involve taking on a small amount of money this year, but in 2010-2011 Nabakov and Marleau come off the books whereas campbell and huet definitely don’t. This would enable the hawks to sign Kane, Keith, and Toews.
I know this trade is probably beyond a longshot, but if Marleau or Bolland moved to the wing, the thought of a Bolland Marleau Hossa line is awesome.

rumor has been swirling for the past few days.
It probably could happen. Everything I am hearing points to this scenario exactly. Right now, I’d put it at 50/50, as San Jose is getting the short side of the stick, amongst all the teams. Should be very interesting.
Short end of the stick? 50/50?
I’ll bet anyone all the money I make for the rest of my life that this does not go down … not even an approximation of it. How often in this league do you see 7 principals involved in a transaction (with a Calder nominee and a 1st-rounder rounding out the exchange!)? Besides, San Jose gets fleeced. They give up their captain, a previous Richard trophy winner, and one the league’s best goalies; and in return they get an albatross contract with Blake, a goalie who has yet to even prove himself as a viable option as a long-term number 1, and a draft pick?
doubtful
the only way i could have seen this deal being made would have been if the sharks had signed “the monster”. but since he’s in toronto i highly doubt the sharks make this deal.
as a hawks fan living in san jose, i can’t see how the sharks would ever even consider huet. considering of the 4 times they played the one huet started he got shredded in a 6-5 loss and the second where he came on in relief and gave up a bad wrap-around to marleau to tie it up (the ot winner was on a d giveaway).
as for getting marleau it wouldn’t be terrible and he could play wing (since he did so most of the year w/ thorton as his center) but he’d have to take a severely diminished leadership capacity (he wears the c for the sharks) as we’re set w/ the letters.
i enjoy watching nabakov play and he always makes some really outstanding saves, but sometimes he gives up the easy ones. a lot of people here in san jose have lost faith in him to come up big in big situations. but a contract year and a motivated young team around him could be a very good combination.
i’ll also go on record as a steeger fan and would hate to give him up.
just my 2 cents.
I just have a gut feeling
that the organization is content to go with Huett…I have no real substantive analysis to back this up, just a feelin’…
Huet and Niemi will be the tandem
Despite the contract dished out to Crawford it is my view the organ-I-zation is distinctly more bullish on Niemi to the point where they think he has a real future in this league. I defer to their judgment in the matter because I haven’t seen much out of either Crawford or Niemi that inspires.
Huet? He’ll be fine. Personally I think he will thrive as a workhorse.
$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.
The same organ-I-zation that was so eager to dump some young future hall of fame goalie named Dominik Hasek. Yes, I know Ed Belfour, yadda, yadda, yadda. As a goaltender myself, I liked Hasek over Belfour ( liked him too, just liked Hasek better) then, and I like Crawford over Niemi, now. I like all of them over Huet’s lazy french ass. Of course, niether Crawford or Niemi will be ready for a serious NHL workload for at least a year and a half or 2 years.
I do agree that they are giving the impression that they are “content” with Huet. I wouldn’t confuse it happiness, though.
Huh?
Are you saying that the same people who were in charge back in 1992 are still running the Hawks now?
And Hasek wasn’t simply traded because the Hawks had Belfour, he was traded because they could only protect one goalie in the expansion draft that year, so they would have lost him for nothing otherwise.
And Huet is lazy? Based on what?

hasek
as CT II said, they would have lost hasek in the expansion draft so getting a pick for him (which turned into daze) wasn’t all bad.
but that being said the team did try to trade belfour and some other parts and picks to quebec for lindros and they were set to take the deal until philly swooped in a offered cash in addition to the player package. quebec came back to the hawks asking for half the money philly ponied up and wirtz said no.
Speaking of lazy...
Kaberle, as anyone who has watched him with consistency can testify, has a real knack for getting undressed at his own blue line when it really matters. In addition, he DOES NOT bring the offensive spark the Campbell has. As for Patrick Marleau, he plays for one of my least favorite teams in the league and remains one of my favorite players – a seasoned workhorse with great leadership abilities. However, I’m also a fan of VERSTEEG! and think the broader scope of this trade is a bum deal. I think if we’re looking to solidify defense (and goaltending), we could do a lot better than this.
"Call Detroit, tell dem... BULLSHIT!"
definitely not
Kubina would have made more sense than Kaberle prior to their trade with ATL but still no chance.
And If I were SJ in this deal I think I would jump off a bridge.
What will Jason Blake and a draft pick do for them>?
Huet, I feel, as a Habs fan, was treated not great, but then went to Washington and was simply let go. Now in Chi-town has a legitimate chance at #! and now you wanna trade him away?
I can’t see this deal being very welcomed by To or SJ but hey its a fantasy man’s idea…. not bad for fodder (something to chat about)

Patrick Sharp is as good as gone
Which pisses me off to no end.
$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.
same here
I only got back into the Blackhawks earlier this year.. was a fan back from 92-94 then fell out of the hockey world entirely.
After following the season this past year, all the way through the playoffs, isn’t it clear that Sharpie is a perfect fit for this team? I understand he’s a damn good bargaining chip, but hell, he’s still an important piece of the puzzle on the Hawks.. at least the way I see it.
Huet is garbage IMO. Paid way too much for way too little after seeing him play this year. The fact that he not only can’t control any rebound whatsoever is just one of the complaints I have. Inability to cut down angles, wide open five-hole, and going down on EVERY fuckin shot are a few more. Why there was even a “competition” between him and Khabby for the starting position last year is still mind boggling. Definitely not a #1 as far as I’m concerned.
Agree that it would suck to loose VERSTEEG! after shellin out all that money and since he’s one hell of a player. I’d say try and get rid of Buff for about the same cap hit.
