Versteeg Still Working to Sign a Contract with Chicago

According to ESPN - Versteeg's agent says they are still working with the Blackhawks to get a new contract done, possibly before a ruling on the grievance filed on his behalf from the NHLPA.  However, with the cap room the Hawks have there will need to be some big moves made before the Hawks can think about signing him.  As much as he wants to stay here and as much as we all would want him on this team - the numbers just don't add up.

Also, if Versteeg's agent was really serious about all this he'd be on Twitter...

It’s not showing on Espn, but the news just reported.

Would be friggin awesome if for some CRAZY reason she gave it to me, lol.

So you talked to Sarah Spain about phone numbers … and asked for only one? Versteeg’s?

Crawford's numbers

are up now, too … 2 years, 1.5 total. Very reasonable.

As well, can someone explain to me how capgeek’s numbers are wrong (http://www.capgeek.com/cap_calculator.php)?

According to them, the cap site I most visit (maybe that’s the problem), we have about 4.2 million available with only Versteeg left to sign. Now, that’s not including bonuses, but even if we were to include the bonuses as part of the salaries, still we’re allowed to exceed the cap by the amount of those bonuses without penalty, correct?

So although close, we aren’t in a position where we need to do anything re creating cap space. Maybe I’m reading this just completely fucking wonky, because I seem to be the only guy not really worried about our cap.

by ChicoMaki on Jul 7, 2009 3:02 PM CDT reply actions

Not a big time cap guy

but here’s my stab at it. If you read the fine print at the bottom, your team’s potential cap, including potential bonuses, can exceed the cap by 7.5%, but if your earned bonuses exceed the cap then that money comes out of your cap the next year…. and under no circumstances do we want any money coming out of our cap for next year. So even though capgeek has us with 4.2 million left, we want wiggle room for potential bonuses, plus capgeek is approximating on Bolland, Barker and Niemi’s cap hits, so actual numbers may vary.

Also, the team has to have some reservation in going right up against the cap this year, knowing that the big three are, of course, due for big contracts next year.

Even so, it seems to me like there’s some cash to play with there. Here’s hoping we can keep Versteeg in town somehow.

Waitasecond

Capgeek has Kane and Toews’ cap hits at 875,00 and 850,000. The numbers I remember for those are 3.75 mil and 2.8 mil. Now I’m lost. Like I said, not a big time cap guy.

Bonus Cushion

It comes back into effect this year.

by McClure on Jul 7, 2009 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Capgeek

now has Kane and Toews back at 3.75 and 2.8 mil. Having them at 875K and 850K is where we were getting the extra amounts of cap room earlier.

They’ve also rescinded their earlier comment about bonuses, so I’m back to having next to no idea how the whole thing works. Geez, can’t we just get back to the part where we watch them all play? I understand that just fine.

by Lost In NC on Jul 7, 2009 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions

No kidding

this stuff seems to get pretty complicated. I’ve never paid attention off-season before. This is an eye-opener.

If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

Oh fuck!

It just occured to me that perhaps Dale has been getting all his info from CapGeek as well…now we’re really screwed!

by HawkInExile on Jul 8, 2009 2:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Question

They could resign him now and worry about the cap later right because they can be up to 10% over until the season starts right?

by Big_Will on Jul 7, 2009 3:03 PM CDT reply actions

It’s what happened with Lang last year. But then you cripple yourself in any deal, as you’re doing so from a position of weakness; the other team(s) know you have to get under the cap.

by McClure on Jul 7, 2009 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Or we could just send Barker to Rockford again because of the cap!

by Big_Will on Jul 7, 2009 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

You can exceed the cap by 7.5% for bonuses.

The Pascal Pelltier

era is also over. Signed with Columbus presumably on a 2-way contract.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 7, 2009 3:57 PM CDT reply actions

Joe Sakic

reportedly retiring. ESPN reporting and saying it should be announced on Thursday. I’m sure he took at look at that team and said “why?”. He was probably my favorite non-Hawk player ever.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 7, 2009 4:02 PM CDT reply actions

Sakic was one of the classiest acts ever.

Never once during the dormant days of the franchise once known as the Nordiques did Sakic complain. Even when his team amassed an abysmal 31-points during the regular season in 1989-90, a season in which seen Sakic record 102 points-the highest point total ever by a player from a last overall team. At season’s end, 2nd on the team in scoring was Michel Petit with 36 points! (Mind you Peter Statsny had 62 points before his departure to NJ and Michel Goulet had 45 points before heading to the Windy City)
3 years later he lead the Nordiques to a 104 point season and a playoff berth. Unreal turnaround!
I always respected Joe for not showing his displeasure at the situation and not walk away from it like Lindros and was a spokesperson for the Nordiques franchise during and after the Lindros dilemma.
He always showed class on and off the ice and for that the NHL and its fans will deeply miss him.
One of the best- Burnaby Joe.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

by hawks61 on Jul 7, 2009 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Loved Sakic

Sakic is one of my all time favorite players. He was the epitome of class. He also was one of the most clutch goal scorers ever (eight overtime playoff winners). You also gotta love Joe for being the captain of a team that had one of the most bitter rivalries with the scum.

by misplacedcanadian on Jul 7, 2009 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Sakic was a classy stud of a player

Loved watching him out here with Forsberg and company during the Avs glory years. One of the quickest wrist shots I’ve ever seen. Good luck Joe!

Haven't we been here before?

Agents out in the media talking about a client wanting to stay in chicago. I wonder if the fans will moan as loudly for Steeger as for Marty.

It’s disappointing that they may not get anything for him because of the notification screwup, but I guess he didn’t really cost anything. I’d prefer seeing Beach or Aliu or some other prospect getting his ice time and making his constant stream of mistakes.

He was a rookie this year, but he’s no kid fresh off the farm. He’s 23 with 2+ years in the AHL and is probably close to his peak physically and mentally. He certainly didn’t show any indications this year that he’s capable of learning to stop stick-handling 1 on 4 at the opponent’s blue line. Even Edzo recognized that, repeatedly.

He’s flashy and there are teams out there that could probably use a young-ish flashy guy with some scoring upside to get a few more butts in the seats, but he’s not a top-six forward on a stanley cup contender.

by StretchingTwine on Jul 7, 2009 8:25 PM CDT reply actions

As much as Versteeg pissed me off in the Detroit series,

I refuse to believe that the mistakes he made in his rookie year will not be improved upon.

He is a dynamic player with legitimate offensive talent. He likely will never develop the hockey intelligence we saw out of Young Toews, but I feel pretty strongly we’ll begin to see better neutral zone decisions from the cocky little shit.

So I guess this would mean Buff is on the block now. Wish we could’ve got rid of him before we showed our hand.

...interesting development

This says to me that the Blackhawks are going to pull off a meaningful trade of some sort. Simply put, all these guys don’t fit under the cap. And no, Brent Sopel isn’t going anywhere as his contract makes him immovable. Hawks will hope that he returns to health and can play out his contract as a serviceable 6th defenseman, a role that he should be able to fill capably in my estimation.

I don't think

even moving Sopel would fix it. Huet, Campbell, Buff or Sharp… one of those four has to be going somewhere else, I think.

by Lost In NC on Jul 7, 2009 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Sharp is probably on the block right now

Which I hate. Much rather spin Versteeg then jettison Sharp.

No diggity

In the back of my mind, I was kind of hoping they wouldn’t sign Versteeg. I was looking forward to the battle for the Next Rookie Sensation for Chicago. With Beach, Aliu, Bickell and Skille in Rockford there are plenty of possibilities. Now all those guys have to look forward to is trying to make the fourth line. Sad, really.

by russellguldin on Jul 8, 2009 12:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Sopel will be just fine as 6th defenseman

He isn’t going to be traded or waived and his 2009-10 contract WILL count against the cap. Therefore need to make the best of things. If Sopel is healthy he can actually be of value to this team.
