Versteeg Signs New Deal With the Blackhawks

I'm not really sure what this means - but as Zarco says (and many others in the comments)- it seems the Blackhawks signed Versteeg to a very familiar contract.  3 years - 9.25 Million.

So I guess it's OK for me to go buy the VERSTEEG! jersey?  I'm a bit tired and have a few drinks in me so I don't know how this is going to work.  So everyone tell me, who gets traded now?

Awesome

However, with this cap hit, I’m afraid they only person they’ll be able to afford to play defense is… Me.

Someone is getting traded, right?

Really, I know it’s early, but this can’t work.

by AngryHack on Jul 8, 2009 6:00 AM CDT reply actions

Either someone is getting traded...

or someone is going to reluctantly have to start the season in Rockford, like Barker did last year. Then management will have to find a way to move around some salaries to fit everyone, at least untill the playoffs when the cap won’t matter.

Like teams in other sports do

Trade away salary at the end of the year. If you want to win, go for it. It is the smart way to run a sports team. One of the worst things they could’ve done this offseason is sat still and said “we have to save money for next offseason”. They are showing that they want to win a championship, not just a couple of playoff series.

blockbuster trade

I thought we had pretty much all accepted that up next we trade Buff for a bag of pucks and maybe some new practice jerseys, and then we’re set for next year.

Hawks played it safe

Better to sign VERSTEEG! then run the risk of him being declared UFA.

Problem with him is, where do you put him? First line is the Bobbleheads, second line is Ladd/Lucky Bolland/Hossa. Third line? Fourth?

Sounds like they may have signed him to trade him, but that’s my 2 cents.

Here’s how I envision the top two lines, following the template of puck winner + playmaker + finisher.

Sharp/Toews/Kane – “Rain King” Line (Daydream Nation #10)
Versteeg/Bolland/Hossa – “Fresh Paper”

by McClure on Jul 8, 2009 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Versteeg and Hossa together? I don’t see this happening. I like your template, but you can’t have two puck-needy guys like that on the same line. Who is the “puck winner” in that line? Who gets nasty or the boards, in the corners? I think you try to put Ladd in Versteeg’s place, and see how that works at the start of camp. I think physical forward + playmaker + finisher is what you want.

by The Admiral on Jul 8, 2009 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions

In my odd world, I had Hossa as the “puck winner” on that line. He’s stronger below the rings than Marty was, but obviously has a better scoring touch on top of it, this would allow Versteeg to float, which is really all he can be trusted to do in my world.

I’ll admit that line doesn’t have a clear cut puck winner, but I threw it together because I’m honestly salivating at the potential a Ladd/Madden checking line/PK unit has.

by McClure on Jul 8, 2009 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I know what you mean about Hossa being stronger, but I dont think we want him to smash-n-crash that much. I just think that a big body clears a lot of things up. Look at what Kunitz did for Crosby. You need to have a Buff/Ladd/and someday Beach guy go in and free up the puck. Versteeg is….I don’t think we fully know what we have in him, except a guy who can score, but hates to dump and chase.

your 2 cents are correct

no way we would let these two hit the market. Versteeg, Sharp, or Buff. One of these guys is going to get traded. The y will also probably try to throw Sopel in deal to get rid of him. The return will be a D-man. I’m guessing this happen before the season starts.

by The Admiral on Jul 8, 2009 9:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Any deal with Sopel

is a good deal (or bad, depending how you look at it). it looks like Buff would be the guy to go — but I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded Sharp to get more in return. I wouldn’t like the deal, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

by junkhorse on Jul 8, 2009 9:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Sharp is simply too valuable to get away with a straight salary dump. Buff seems like the ideal choice because

a) you can “sell high” on his playoff performance

b) the Hawks have too many forwards who are the same size who are ostensibly supposed to do the same thing (Buff, Brouwer, Eager, Beach, Aliu), and obviously Buff makes the most money. Troy Brouwer could easily do what Buff would be asked to in a checking role with Madden and Ladd.

by McClure on Jul 8, 2009 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Buff and Sopel clear up over $5 million. I’m AAAAAAAAAAALL for it.

by Hungryhawk on Jul 8, 2009 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

with Brouwer, Ladd, and Madden – it makes Buff more expendable. I just didn’t know what Buff’s contract was and knew that if the Hawks were simply trying to unload salary, Sharp earns more than Buff and would clear more cap space.

but both points you made here show that Buff would be the guy to trade.

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

then we release him.

by G8K33P3R on Jul 8, 2009 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Releasing him is unhelpful/unlikely

We’ll probably need to end up making him the best paid man in Rockford. His deal is two-way, right? Keeping him in Rockford and using AJ or Jordan Hendry as our 6th D man, combined with trading Buff for a sack of pucks should clear up the space.

No idea what next year’s plan is though. My guess would have to be that it doesn’t involve Patrick Sharp, though.

by Lost In NC on Jul 8, 2009 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

one way or two way

If he has a one way contract, would we have to put him on waivers to send him down? That way if some team picks him up, we are free of his salary. Or maybe I missed something here. NHL 09 messes with my sense of reality.

twitter.com/kaner88

by Original Six on Jul 8, 2009 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

He is definitely a one-way contract—- no one takes 2+ mill on a two-way. If you send him down, he must clear waivers, and then if someone picks him up, they pay his full salary but they split his cap-hit with you, meaning you’re still on the line for 1 mill of his salary.

by Beantown Canuck on Jul 8, 2009 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting.

That might be a better plan then paying the full $2+Mil.

twitter.com/kaner88

by Original Six on Jul 8, 2009 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Of course, if no one takes him, you put him on your farm team. Then you still pay his full $2+ mill salary, but it’s completely off the cap.

by Beantown Canuck on Jul 8, 2009 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that's a trade the Hawks Front Office

is willing to make. They sold enough jerseys last year to pay the salary, it’s just cap room that’s at a premium.

Heck, I’ll buy a fifth jersey if it gets Sopel’s salary off the books.

by Lost In NC on Jul 8, 2009 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't realize that the cap hit was split

that puts a small damper on that plan. But really…. who’s going to claim Sopel off of waivers?

by Lost In NC on Jul 8, 2009 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Does Nickelback have partial ownership of the Canucks?

Then the Canucks.

Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

by chrome on Jul 8, 2009 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Sharp or Versteeg will be traded

I think it is a virtual guarantee. The return we receive will be muted because any deal will be a salary dump of sorts, especially if Sopel gets thrown in the mix.

$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.

by BLou on Jul 8, 2009 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

What's the reasoning?

By doing that, you’re negating the offensive improvement generated by signing Hossa.

Like The Great McClure said, the successful role Buff played at the end of the year is replaceable w/in the system, at cheaper cost. The same can’t be said of Versteeg or Sharp.

Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

by chrome on Jul 8, 2009 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions

No one's even sure Buff can repeat his performance

Not even including the cuteness factor, I think the Hawks would lose a lot if they trade Sharp (which also includes a really good photoshop by mjthor).

Im pretty sure

If we knew how to run a sports team (IE: Tender qualifying offers in the appropriate amount of time), we could have had Barks and Steeger for half that price. Hope this doesn’t bite us in the ass.

by AirTrafficAJ on Jul 8, 2009 9:05 AM CDT reply actions

But those would be one and done deals

At least they have those guys signed to 3 year contracts, if for nothing else, to trade.

by Geoffhawk on Jul 8, 2009 9:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Big "Fuck you" to the NHLPA?

Anyone else see Barker and Versteeg signing as a total slap in the face (balls) to the PA? I mean, the PA was supposedly filing this grievance on behalf of these guys, but neither of them even waited to see the resolution to this thing. I guess in the end, these two guys probably got about what they wanted, but my guess is they could have gotten even more if they had become UFAs.

by Geoffhawk on Jul 8, 2009 9:53 AM CDT reply actions

Perhaps that's true ...

But one unknown to consider is, how many teams out there were interested in them that had a better shot at the cup than Chicago? Which, for younger players, equals big money in the later portions of their careers.

Signing with Chicago is a career move, as well as one that shows heart. You grow up wanting the Cup, but you live in the real world and want to get paid. This works out for both of those asperations, IMO.

by artroland on Jul 8, 2009 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with this

There’s no guarantee of anything this year, but you have to think the Hawks are going to be very serious contenders. If no cup this year, then probably sometime in the next two seasons after that. It’s not A-Rod money, but it’s great money on a serious team. I would think STEEG! is still tradebait after this year, but I doubt Tallon would lock him up just to avoid not getting something in return. Now that he has signed him, I think he needs to keep him if for no other reason than to not look like a ruthless asshole, at least for this year.

by NKLHD on Jul 8, 2009 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Tallon said

that they wanted to stay here and, in spite of the paperwork screw-up, I have to think they did after the year they had, especially at the UC. Something big started 2 seasons ago near season’s end when we missed the playoffs by 3 points and last year it caught fire. The players appreciate what the fans at the UC have done in that period of time. I think they know this is the year to step it up and go for it all.

by Slayer24 on Jul 9, 2009 2:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Are we all jumping the gun on Hossa replacing Jesus. While this is true as far as the roster move, don’t you think adding Kaner to the Bolland/Ladd line makes the most sense? I like Hossa/Toews/Sharp. Ladd/Bolland/Kane. Versteeg/Madden/Brouwer. Eager/Kopecky/Burish. Trade Buff. Fraser as the other guy.

by oneminuteremainingintheperiodoneminute on Jul 8, 2009 12:41 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

a respectable idea but....

on paper, Sharp and Hossa are our two best pure snipers, I think they should be split up.

Plus, the only way I see Sharp reaching his 40 goal potential is if he skates with Kane.

he’s more suited to a wing but he can play C if need be. His FO% last year was right around 45%, Fraser was right around the same mark and Bolland was just under at 44.4%.

allegedly Jiri Hudler signed with the Dynamo Moscow of the KHL…of course these KHL reports are always sketchy until word comes directly from the player or his agent, but that would be a pretty big loss for the Scum since he was set to finally become a top 6 forward.

Answering Zoot's Question

“why does everyone hate buff so much?”

I don’t think that it’s that people hate Buff (though some do). But it’s exactly like McClure said…sell high on his playoff performance. His cap hit is $3 mil a year. That means he’s the financial equivalent of Barker or Versteeg…approximately. Simply put, of those three, who’s the least valuable? One is a PP QB for years to come, one finished second in the ROY voting last year, and one got benched midway through the season for being lazy.

by GenPabloSecobar on Jul 8, 2009 4:22 PM CDT reply actions

And now the final piece of the puzzle

Finally signed! VERSTEEG! has decided to withdraw from the possibility of becoming a UFA and return for another 3 seasons as a Windy City Warrior. 3-years at $9.25 million must have him feeling a bit ‘Glamorous’ by now. Forget ipod Kris, now you have the cheddar to afford backstage passes LMAO.
In any event, it’s really nice to see all 6 guys back with the Hawks and shows not only do they have the excellent talent but are really ‘good people’ as well. What other team can boast that their players would opt out at the chace at becoming a UFA just to benefit their organization that they feel has a legitimate opportunity to win Lord Stanley’s Mug?
In the end, it’s definitely a happy ending to what has been an unsettling situation. May it be the end of the turmoil and the beginning of the good fortune.
