You've Worked Too Hard For Your Illusions Just To Throw Them All Away
Obviously, the fallout from the Kane story is fascinating. However, I think it could be useful in shattering some stories and myths we tell ourselves.
The big one is "hockey players are different." No, they're not. Sorry. You know why you don't see as many athlete/criminal stories about hockey? Because there's less attention. There's less people following them to clubs, recognizing them, flashing pictures on their phones. The gossip pages tend to stay away, because no one cares about hockey players. But to suggest these guys are a different breed, that's asinine. They're rich, young kids, and those can add up to be bad combinations. They do stupid things. Mark Bell has done time. Dany Heatley killed a teammate. Joe Corvo beats his wife, so did Denis Potvin, and Bobby Hull (a crime that gets such short-shrift from sports fans it's enough to make you lose your faith in human kind). These guys are not angels, they're just people. People with freakish DNA and more money than you or I. Sure, maybe there are less of these stories in the NHL than other sports, but it's percentage points, not a wide chasm.
Another one is the portrayal of Kane as some sort of sweetheart. Please. If you've paid any attention over these two years, it was obvious that Kane was a cocky little twat (and I loved it). He's not out to take your daughter to prom. There are numerous interviews with him available anywhere about taboo subjects, such as drinking and Russian girls. Without getting too close to libel lines, I'm sure you've all heard stories about nocturnal activities here. To think Kane is some sort of homebody from Buffalo is a joke. This kid left home at 14, and has been a star everywhere he's been. He played on one of the biggest junior teams in Canada, London Knights, and was its biggest star. You think those kids don't get star treatment in those towns? He then was the #1 pick, comes here and is immediately the marquee name with the organization. What would ever lead you to believe Patrick Kane was grounded like you and I are?
But let's not beat around the bush here. Your head is in the sand if you can't detect elements of racism here. For people to compare this to Derrick Rose flashing gang signs (and some have, Mr. Morrissey) is beyond farce. Fuck, I flash gang signs when drunk. It's not a crime, and probably just a goof. Kaner has committed a felony, possibly. Reverse these incidents. If Rose was arrested for beating up a cabbie? There'd be a line of people a mile long to label him another NBA-Thug who'd rather be a 'banger. If Kaner were caught photographed flashing gang signs, we'd all think it was ironic and funny and mothers would still be handing their daughter's yearbook pic to him.
Look, I don't think Patrick Kane is a bad guy, though he is quite clearly cheap (I tend to tip more when drunk, which leads to my current financial state, but that's just me). Scotty Pippen, you've got a new friend. I think Kane has just made a horrible, horrible mistake, and should pay for it. It'll end up being a fine, community service, a settlement with the cabbie, and possibly a 3-5 game suspension. But stop defending him, stop defending hockey players. It's futile.
Update: All right, maybe he isn't cheap

True story.

In other news, a court date has been scheduled for Monday for Kane and his cousin according to Yahoo.

While I’d like to think “hockey players are different,” I can get down with the argument that they’re not.
But I’d like to believe the NHL does a better job of policing the BS that happens off the ice. If Kane only gets 3-5 games for being charged with a felony and Avery got suspended for six, then released, for talking about his sloppy seconds, something is seriously wrong. Ten games, at least.
by jeffcagle on Aug 10, 2009 2:28 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
You're right
But that won’t happen. Because Bettman and the higher-ups know who their high-profile guys are. Whereas Avery has always been a villain, and people genuinely enjoy seeing him punished, Kane is still the face of the future on the NHL, and they’ll do everything they can to avoid demonizing him.

Don’t kid yourself and think the Star released Avery simply because of the comment. They realized the signing was a huge mistake and when Avery basically handed them the perfect opportunity to ship him out they took it. If he had been a 40 goal scorer or some other key part of the team and not a locker-room cancer they would have done everything they could to keep him.

Truth.
Also, the “Anger Management” they made Avery go through was just a bit of theater. Avery didn’t call Dion out because he was angry, he called him out because being a class A shit-starter is what Avery does.
Will Kane go through “anger management” for this one?
Kane should get 8+, but after whatever plea deal he settles along with his cousin falling on a sword for him, i see it being more like 4-6/

Just because the League went overboard with the Avery suspension doesn’t mean they should continue to do so with every infraction.

As it usually goes in these situations...
Probably a drunken misunderstanding that got ugly…quick. As many of us can probably say…when you’re lit up, and someone (especially some stranger who you believe you have the advantage in either numbers, size and/or strength) throws gas on that fire (i.e. locking them in the cab) you might be so inclined to prove a physical point that you don’t like being threatened, manipulated, etc. Both of them probably didn’t have cash on them (but thought they did before they got in the cab), the cabbie didn’t take plastic, so maybe a “how ’bout an autograph?” bargain, followed by drunken frustrating anger bubbling over…as the filter of ’don’t getting physical’ was already dissolved with booze.
And I wish the facts would just come out in one fell swoop instead of “reports are saying…” and bit by bit little pieces of the story come out resulting in assumptions…as I just made. I’m certainly not trying to defend and/or justify the alleged actions, as it’s been said, it was still incredibly dumb, but I’m trying to put myself in his situation. Sure, I’m talking out of my ass, but what the hell.
Get ready for the jeers, over-analyzation, comparisons to other pro athletes publicly humiliating themselves, and even questions from non-Hawk fans asking YOU about it, as if you know Kaner (already happened with me) But, the firestorm will pass.

UPDATE:
The lawyer for the cab driver said the incident has been "blown out of proportion’’ and later added that "I think we should be able to work things out’’ with Kane. Sounds like everybody knows how much money it would take to make the cabbie and his pressing of charges and future testimony go away, and I’m guessing it will be more than 20 cents.
From the Trib, Rosenbloom…yeah, save your “Rosenbloom sucks” or something to that effect…I already know that. But I figured it was a decent update.

He’s a “gold digger”. Did any of you see the interview with him? He didn’t look beat up to me. He looked like he needed a new wallet for his good fortune.
Also, a 20 year old with millions of dollars is drunk and out of control. WOW, check out TMZ, E news, etc. It’s always been like that. When I was his age, 22 years ago, I’ll bet I did worse things than this, and I didn’t have a penny. I
Kane pay the guy off. He’s a worm, but you are a little prick and better grow up. We like watching you play hockey, but don’t want to know about your bullshit life, so keep it to yourself.

He looked like a drunk old (older) cab driver to me, but hey
and YES it has alwys been like this. Young people do stupid things in order to get attention. I did it, and I’ll bet you did it / do it now. Just the way it is, especially when we make an 18 year old young person our poster boy for a cities hockey future. Crosby handles it different because he has/had Mario to help him out. We gave Kane Stan Bowman.
So, yes, we brought this on ourselves when we imagined that a 20 year old millionaire would be a responsible role model. do you see a “C” or an “A” on his jersey? Like I said, I like to watch him play hockey, but could care less about his BS life.

For me it has nothing to do with being a role model or a celebrity. The action or inaction speaks for itself. Call me old-fashioned, but I want the players on my team to be character guys, plain and simple.
I know a lot of people argue that he’s young and was drunk, and I realize the full details still aren’t out; but I went through my young and drunk and stupid years, too, and beating up someone who was effectively defenseless was never part of it. For me, there’s no skirting the fact that only assholes would do that kind of thing, or at the very least only an asshole would allow it to happen without saying something or trying to stop it.

Huh?
How does taking a simple precaution to ensure payment make the cab driver a jerk? I don’t understand why people are so up in arms about the driver locking his doors — it’s not even an issue until someone tries to leave without paying.
It’s very simple: pay the cab driver, he unlocks the doors, then you leave.
NOW STOP IT RIGHT HERE
by mjthor on Aug 10, 2009 4:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The lawyer of the cabbie says that there was a dispute over the fare. In that case it might not be so simple. More like pay the cab driver what he wants (fair or not), he unlocks the doors, then you leave.
None of us were there and we’ve only heard one side.
by Geoffhawk on Aug 10, 2009 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're right; we don't know exactly what happened...
However, let’s assume for a moment that the driver was being unreasonable and requested a fare that the Kanes felt was unfair.
There are two routes you can take in that situation: begrudgingly pay the man and walk away or Kane ‘em. There needs to be that voice in the back of Kane’s head that says, “Wait a second, I’m a rich, high-profile athlete who should avoid trouble at all costs. What’s a few dollars to me?” This sounds like I’m holding Kane to a higher standard than most people — and I am. That’s part of the implicit agreement of being a professional athlete. It’s no different for teachers. When I sign a contract that says “Yes, I will work for your school,” I will absolutely be held to a higher standard if I, say, get a DUI.
Even if you don’t hold Kane to that deservedly higher standard, there are a myriad of better ways to deal with a situation such as a cab driver asking you for too much money. Hell, if a cabbie locked me in and demanded a ridiculous fare, I’d calmly get out my phone and call the police. That may or may not be the best way to deal with the situation, but I can tell you one thing: it’s a hell of a lot better than resorting to violence over a small amount of money.

Amen on the higher standards shit
I would never speak the way I speak here while representing my company or car club or family. Whenever I feel that my actions are going to reflect on someone else, I feel that has to be taken into consideration and acted upon.
I hold my moderators to higher standards than the rest of the posters on the car club message board also, as I feel while we are there, we are setting an example. It just seems like common sense to me.
If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning
by Trixietrx on Aug 10, 2009 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hmmm.
Just saying, but if a cabbie refused to unlock the doors for me, assuming guilt prior to being proven innocent, I’d be worrying about some very unpleasant ways my body would be found later that morning. It’s called improper detention, it’s also highly illegal in many states. You’re at the mercy of this person “playing fair” and allowing you out of his car, after he has already unfairly detained you.
No, it doesn’t excuse the beating the man allegedly received. But his actions of illegally imprisoning and detaining customers based on his own method of profiling should be scrutinized as well.
In fact, done to the wrong passenger, this scenario could have ended up horribly wrong.

Yeah, really.
Just pay the damn driver, I mean for Christ’s sake, many average joes let the vendors at the ballpark keep the extra change after they buy something from them, I myself have given them a dollar back to keep on more than one occasion. Yes, he paid the other cabbie handsomely last season while in Chicago, but that doesn’t matter in this case.
20Cent damn well better learn his lesson, because this mess is going to cost him a shitload more than 20 cents that he would have more than made up for with his salary this season. And I hope his parents are telling him that he’s going to have to pay for all this out of his pocket, since it’s him who wedged his head so far up his ass that the Adam’s apple in his throat just might be part of his head in the wee hours Monday morning, bombed or not.

Obviously
The point I’m making is that I hope that his parents are impressing upon him, or better yet, he’s realizing on his own what a shitload of trouble he’s gotten himself into.
And I sincerely hope that he accepts the settlement/punishment without question from the court, and faces the heat that he’s going to get from teammates, the front office, the media family, friends, the general public for the next several months like a young man who realizes that he fucked up, not some little scrawny just-barely-over-20 asshole who is only concerned about his image. Kaner: Your image is fucked up now because of this stuff, the only way you can fix it is to just simply deal with it, and deal with it as an adult, not like some whiny toddler.
And you can bet that moment he reports to Blackhawks training camp and walks into the locker room, someone on the team or Coach Q is going to give him hell, and deservedly so.

The cab driver does not want to press charges here. But since its a criminal case it could still be moving forward. To get off the robbery charges all they would have to do is show that it wasn’t about the money, but about being locked in (which is unlawful imprisonment.) If he wants to make sure he doesn’t get ripped off, the cabbie should take the money up front and make change when he gets to the destination and knows the exact fare.
I’m not saying Kane and Co. were completely innocent here, clearly they should have made a better decision on a way to get out of the cab, but if they’re being held against their will, they have a right to defend themselves before calling the police.
