Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Fantasy GM Chair

As most of you know, the triangle of stupid that is this blog doesn't have much more to do these days and then sit around and discuss moves for the Hawks on the internet.  It's our lives, and it's stupid, but we like it, so shut up.  So here's the one McClure and I have been kicking around today.

Today, the Sharks have announced that Patrick Marleau is no longer the Captain in the Bay.  This doesn't mean he's available, but I have to believe they'll at least listen.  Everyone in San Jose is screaming for changes after consistent playoff blowouts.  Now, it is my opinion to blame any of these collapses on Marleau would be stupidity only capable by the writers of this blog.  The Sharks should be taking long looks at others (it rhymes with Joe Thornton) to apportion blame.  Marleau, other than Pavelski, was the only forward who looked like he could give a shit the last two postseasons.  Maybe he's not a vocal leader, maybe he's not built to be a captain, but he's a wonderful player on both ends of the ice, and may flourish on a team where he isn't one of the focal points.

So, what would it take?  Well, money-wise Versteeg and Buff match up perfectly.  However, Doug Wilson is about as far from a moron as you'll find in an NHL GM.  Even tossing in whichever of Beach/Aliu you don't think will be able to stay out of jail might not be enough, as well as one or two picks.  But it's worth asking.  Marleau is a UFA after this season, whereas Buff and Steeg have years left, and you also free up cash next summer for what everyone thinks will be Hawks Apocalypse (as we're going to refer to it from now on).  Here's your top three if you somehow pull this off:

Hossa-Toews-Kane

Marleau-Bolland-Sharp

Ladd-Madden-Brouwer

That team looks like a President's Trophy winner, as it has four players capable of 40 goals in the top 6, as well as Bolland and Kane who will pass 20, and a third line that would be nails.

But let's not fool ourselves, any deal for Marleau would probably have to include Sharp.  And Sharp skating with Joe Thornton would result in 50 goals possibly, which would be hard to stomach.  However, due to Sharp being locked up long-term, and Marleau's impending UFA-status, I don't think Bowman could be convinced to do any more than this deal straight up, except for what it takes to make the numbers work (i.e. Brent Sopel as Sharp's carry-on bag).  Top Three Lines would then look like this:

Hossa-Toews-Kane

Marleau-Bolland-Versteeg/Buff

Ladd-Madden-Versteeg/Buff

Still looks pretty good, just not as imposing as the other formation.  This is pretty pie in the sky, but I seriously hope Stan makes at least a call to Wilson, and kicks the tires a little.

This is just step 1

for the Heatley/Marleau deal. While what you imagine would be beautiful (I’m thinking there’s a way to put Sopel in the Buff/Steeg option) it will, in all likelihood, be only a fancy of the speculative mind.

Will it be Marleau or Chardonnay sir?

Don’t think this deal of any shape or form will happen. Pretty sure this lastest instalment of “Who’s to blame?” in San Jose has pretty much labelled Marleau as the guy GM Doug Wilson has targeted in trading away in order to obtain Heatley.
With that said though if Heatley was to change his mind maybe, just maybe, the Versteeg and Byfuglien option may become appealing to Wilson and the Sharks operation but that’s only speculation.
Unfortunately it looks like Doug Wilson is stealing a page from “Iron” Mike Keenan and blame anyone and everyone for his team playoff collapse and is paving the way for a Savard-Chelios type of a deal.
Sad situation for Marleau to be in considering all he has done during his tenure in San Jose and very much agree with SamFels that Marleau was the only one that seemed to care about his team demise during the Anaheim series. Little fact: in the 2 games San Jose did win in the playoffs this season Game 3 Marleau had 2 goals and a 2 assists and in Game 5 had the OT winning goal which begs the question why is Marleau the one getting the shaft in all of this?
Just for the record though in my fantasy world the Hawks trade Campbell, Sopel, and Brouwer for Marleau. (Dream a little dream, life is but a dream sweetheart!)

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

Felt a cool breeze, and I.........

This is me after reading that first supposed lineup.

With the first proposed lineup, the Hawks would once again lead the league in Patricks, as they did when Lalime was here, and that doesn’t even include Pat Foley in the booth.

If saving money is the objective --

— I would not be opposed to a Buff-for-picks-plus-minor-leaguers route, particularly if he comes back to earth early in the season. Maybe some diamonds in the rough make us very lucky.

One thing I think is safe: there will be a salary dump of some size. The later it happens, the less value we get. If it happens at the deadline, we may get royally screwed.

There is a lot of unknowns though. Which reminds me: Why are we talking about this? IT IS AUGUST. Burish will be through another five ladyfriends before we really know what is what. Perspective is key.

Why are we talking about this? IT IS AUGUST.

Because I no longer care about baseball, football, or basketball. Doubt I’m the only one.

also, awesome Lebowski reference, btw.

I am NOT drinking any F-----g Marleau"

I would not trade Sharp. I would like to get Burns from JHC, I mean Wild, as I’ve said before. If that dream does not happen, then lets play with what we have. Yes, I hear the comments now.

But since we are pretending to be NHL GM’s. If Skille cannot make it with the Hawks after this camp, add him in to the trade. Buff, Versteeg, Skille for Marleau. I’m assuming that Dougie (since I’m a GM, I can call him Dougie) would trade either one. On that subject, maybe Dougie was watching Favre and is thinking about coming back and making himself the captain, OR maybe Roenick is coming back to wear the C.

Anyway…….

Hossa Toews Kane
Brouwer Marleau Sharp
Ladd Bolland Beach/Kopecky/Eager
Eager/Burish/Kopecky Madden Kopecky/Beach/Burish
Aliu (yes let him play)

If a center goes down Colin Fraser/Kopecky can do fill in.

Buff Versteeg Skille make around 7.5 MIL between them. Marleau makes 6.3 and would be a rent a player for the year. We would then have 8.7 plus the current salaries of Keith, Kane and Toews, which is an additional 8 MIL. The total available for them would be 16.7 MIL. That is plenty, and maybe we keep Madeen or Malrleau anyway. Not bad for my 2nd day.

OR
If we traded Versteeg Buff and Skille to MN for Burns, then Kopecky/Fraser will have to perform more, but our blue line would be unreal. AND he only makes 3.5 MIL for the next three years. You see where I’m going?

Keith Seabrook
Burns Barker
Campbell Hammer

I like your thinking Sam

it couldn’t hurt to kick the tires a little. I think Doug will listen.

As there is talk about what the lines would look like…remember, Hossa isn’t touching game ice until after Thanksgiving. Would we need that depth in the first 6-8 weeks of the season (‘Steeg, Buff, and defenseman) with Panda being out? Sure Marleau would kind of be that star replacement, but again, I’m not saying that we don’t have the depth for sure, I figured I’d break off another branch of discussion. Or do we think with Marleau, and no Steeger, Buff, and whatever defenseman, will be fine until Hossa comes back?

Two months

Of Marleau with no Hossa? That features a lot of games against the Avalanche.

Not really too tough a stretch, the Hawks could certainly weather it.

On the other hand, I’m pretty sure the second the “C” was taken from Marleau, Wilson’s caller ID was filled with the numbers of every GM in the league.
