To be honest...
…the tax-increase makes me want to drink more, and I drink plenty.
The way they phrased it on the WBEZ site—using “gallons” as a reference—is misleading. According to the Dept. of Revenue:
For a one-fifth bottle of distilled spirits, the tax would jump from 90 cents to $1.71; the tax on a bottle of wine would increase 13 cents to 28 cents; and a six-pack of beer would go from 10.4 cents to 13 cents.
If I know that 81 MORE cents of each of my purchases of a fifth is going toward public works and things like patching up the damn road, then HELL YES, one more fifth of Dimitri, por favor.
Being a PW employee, the problem is that the money designated for projects like that rarely get utilized in that fashion. Hell, where I work the engineers just leave the office for coffee instead of checking on their damned contractors.
If there was a guarantee that the money from the increased liquor taxes went to said projects, I would up my alcohol consumption.

Fucking sin taxes
Go Rocky. I don’t care if it’s for his benefit. Wish he owned part of a cig company too.
If I can’t drink and I can’t smoke, will they tax me if I start cheating on my husband?
If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning
Every day, the society depicted in Demolition Man is closer and closer to becoming a reality.

This is a good thing.
As it gives Wesley Snipes a reason to stop making movies.

Depends on how they use the money
Its not like the government is keeping it, Illinois is in a budget crises and the money is going to needed services
Most Likely
Its because the location of the majority of the Wirtz families stores are in low income areas. Low income ares + tax increase = less money to spend on beer.
One of my friends is the nephew of Dollar Bill. He is now in california engaged in the buisness regarding the other commonly used intoxicant
