Blind, Deaf, And Dumb And Born To Follow

An absolutely fascinating story from the Phoenix New Times about the Coyotes sale, and I figure with the Reinsdorf-Chicago connection I can get away with printing it up here.  This thing stinks to high fucking heaven, and it's a wonder Bettman and his cronies are really towing the company line of idiocy.

I've ranted about the Yotes and Basille and moving to Hamilton before, so there's no point in rehashing it again.  I've spent far too much time trying to figure out why Bettman is so against this move.  It can't be for the move itself, because every other league has had a team move and hasn't lost totaly credibility.  Shit, the Browns were stolen from Cleveland (the first version) and the Emperor to Bettman's Vader, David Stern, sat idily by while an even bigger crime of the Sonics boxed off to Oklahoma Fucking City took place.  LA lost both its football teams, it still reigns supreme, and the Expos moved to DC to bring something not resembling baseball to our nation's capitol.  So it can't be he's afraid of movement.  After all, he initiated all these moves to the Sun Belt.

Ah, that's it then, isn't it?  If the Yotes wave the white flag and head north, it would signal Bettman's fuck-up, wouldn't it?  After all, Bettman's biggest ploy as Unquestioned Leader, other than, y'know, locking everyone out for a season, was the expansion into new markets.  Well, would one failing actually be the first domino?  If the Coyotes became the Hamilton Tiger Cats, and succeeded and flourished with a sharp, progressive owner -- and they would -- would other teams struggling in markets where they don't belong begin to look elsewhere?  Might the Panthers look at Seattle or Portland?  Would the Preds think Winnipeg was ready again (doubtful, but we can dream)?  After years of incompetent management and play drive away any possible fan in Atlanta, would the Thrashers bring a second team to Toronto, which only makes too much sense?  And if any of this happened, what would Bettman have to show for his years?  A CBA that nearly cost the league every fan it has and now both the owners and players hate?  A joke of a TV deal?  Realigned confrences and divisions that no one asked for?  No rise in popularity or notoriety? Add to this the possible grandiose failure of his biggest experiment, non-traditional hockey markets.

It is not the fans of Phoenix that Bettman is trying to save, but merely his own ass.

Fuck it

lets have retro day. If the Hawks can play in Finland and Wrigley Field then my favorite teams of the 80’s/90’s go back home for a weekend back to back “alternate” home games.

Colorado back in those sweet as Nordiques uniforms.
The Hurricanes in Hartford.
Coyootes in Winnipeg.
Sharks and Lightning are still franchise sperm.

It would be awesome.

Tit

Can’t argue with that. It’s blatant and appalling. Maybe Balsillie will make his dream reality yet, and rid us of this pesky thorn in the process. And I love the frown – my new dart board.

Just to add...

Seattle and Portland are two metro markets that have supported junior (and for a time, waaaaaaaay back in the day, professional) hockey for years. I would argue that both of these markets could support NHL teams, but why should Betts do anything that makes sense, right?

not exactly breaking news

but the Sharks have called a presser for Thursday where it’s believed #27 will be officially announcing his retirement.

give the Yotes back to Winnipeg and split the Florida teams amongst Quebec and Hamilton. Seattle can have the Thrash and if Portland wants a team they can have the Preds.

For the love of hockey

I was born and lived in Chicago for 33 years and I’m a die hard fan of all our sports teams. 16 years ago, I moved to south Florida and adopted the teams here while still loving and following my Chicago teams on satellite. The first thing I did after I moved was get Miami Dolphin season tickets for my love of football. When the Florida Panthers were born, I became a season ticket holder for my love of hockey. When people flippantly say to relocate the Panthers, they are tearing out my heart and those who love the game of hockey and our Panthers! Anyone who does not live in south Florida doesn’t understand that down here, non die hard fans will NOT go to games if the team is not winning, period! Remember when the hawks were going through their dismal years and no one went to the games? I was proud that the fans finally took a stand and stopped supporting “Dollar Bill Wirtz” who didn’t give a damn about us! The Panther do have a core group of rabid fans and season ticket holders and I guarantee that the Bank Atlantic Center will be filled to the rafters as the Miami Arena was when the Panthers were in their Stanley Cup run of 1996. We desperately need what the Hawks got, new ownership and management, but that’s a whole other story!

well you sort of made the point for not having teams in Florida which has long been the debate with the failing MLB Florida teams. Most of the people who live in So. Florida are not from Florida and you’re likely in the vast minority of those transplanted fans as not every transplant has the same dedication to their adoptive team. I moved to LA to work for Paramount after college for a couple years and I sure as hell didn’t become a Dodgers or Kings supporter..I showed up when the Cubs or Hawks were in town like most every other transplanted fan and bought the packages on the dish so I could see the games. The MLB teams there like the Rays being based in the historically Yankee market due to that being their spring training home for decades. If those teams can survive It’s going to take a generation for the transplants to pass their fandom down to their children…and seeing that half of said transplants are seemingly retirees with children likely elsewhere it’s going to take awhile to build up a loyal fanbase. I have no idea if kids in Florida even play hockey…perhaps it’s like CA where they play roller hockey but I doubt many kids do, nor many high schools. I can’t even think of a Florida college that has a hockey team. nor any NHLer who is from Florida. It’s the same problem with the Coyotes. If anyone has ever traveled to Mesa for a Cubs spring training game, seemingly half of the neighboring Scottsdale and Mesa areas are Chicago or No Indiana transplants/retirees which is why even when the Diamondbacks were competitive and winning the World Series in 2001 they still couldn’t sell out games despite the new stadium and the winning but when the Cubs show up they’re maxed out. Also see LA and the NFL. LA is teeming with people who aren’t from LA or CA so they really don’t care that there is no NFL team. Everyone just goes to the designated team’s bars to watch their team from back home. I don’t really care either way about the Florida teams..that was just greedy and ill-conceived expansion…not as stupid as putting a team in ATL which has long been known as the worst pro sports city in America but if the NHL felt the need to have a franchise in Florida they should have just done what MLB likely wishes they would have done and put the one FL franchise in Orlando where at least the heavy tourism can bring in some more visiting fans to go along with the sparingly populated locals. Winnipeg and Quebec lost their teams for financial reasons relating to the pre-cap era where those small market Canadian teams couldn’t compete…so in the cap era they deserve and should be fully capable of supporting a franchise whether they’re consistently putting a winner on the ice or not…Winnipeg especially.

Speaking as a lawyer

[ducks thrown folding chair]

You can’t stop me that easy.

Anyways: this is in Bankruptcy Court. The club is not owned by anybody at this moment. It is owned by a court-appointed trustee. The trustee’s job — any trustee’s job — is to obtain the best relief he or she can for the beneficiaries of the trust (here, the creditors). It is the clear duty of any trustee is to do the best job he or she can for the beneficiaries.

Mr. Blackberry is willing to put up more dough (to the creditors) than Reinsdorf. Mr. Blackberry wins. THE END. As least, as far as the case goes.

Which leaves Our Friend Gary in a spot. If he says, “screw you guys… we won’t put you in the schedule, any games that you do play as a Hamilton club are exhibition games only, [and so on],” that would be consistent with the NHL position to this point. It would also make the NHL a laughingstock.

This is how it has been since the day the Chapter 11 petition was filed. No matter what the NHL says about who has the right to do what — if you file the petition, the result is what is the best for the creditors. Which means money, which means Gary can go fly a freaking kite.

WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE!

Do you think

Betteman would ever have the stones to show his face in Hamilton once they get a team there? You think you have it bad being a lawyer…

by AirTrafficAJ on Aug 6, 2009 12:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

The NHL at some point will have to give in to two things.

1. Balsillie owning a team.
2. Relocation of a failed Southern US team (Phoenix, Florida, Tampa Bay, Carolina and Atlanta all spring to mind)

This move kills two birds with one stone and lets Bettman save some face of not having to actually rubber stamp the demolition of one city’s franchise. With all the crap that went on about 15 years ago with moving Hartford, Quebec City, Minneapolis, and Winnipeg to"greener pastures", screw these cities crying about relocation now. You’re not being moved from a traditional hockey market to a larger city just because the NHL Board of Commissioners sees dollar signs, it’s the exact opposite…also, you didn’t support your team. But it also seems like Bettman believes that a relocation of one of his precious Southern US team equals a tacit admission that his beloved experiment of desert hockey is a failure.

Either way….the two things above will happen eventually. Why not allow the inevitable and also get out from a bad bankruptcy and arena deal at the same time?

And +1 for anyone that caught the Tool reference in the title.

Separating Bettma's personality from his bosses' wishes
Ah, that’s it then, isn’t it? If the Yotes wave the white flag and head north, it would signal Bettman’s fuck-up, wouldn’t it?

I’ve no love lost for the man, and maybe I’m just parsing here, but I’m still perplexed that people so often turn expansion/southern market matters into a reflection of his own (rather large) ego and (rather grating) personality. It makes for good short-hand — since he is the figurehead representing the board of governors — but isn’t the answer much more likely that there are 30 (well, 29) owners in this league who either don’t want a Hamilton franchise (TOR and BUF) or want one only on their own terms, for their own exorbitant expansion fee?

Bettman has bosses. They have a lot more power than he does. As long as he does their bidding, he stays (or at least the bidding of the majority; pretty sure there was division throughout the lockout). When he doesn’t, he goes. He was hired under the premise that expansion is good, by owners who were already seeking expansion (fee$$$) before he was brought on. He’s good short-hand for the cause of the league’s woes, but he and his ego are not the source.

Lighthouse Hockey: Side effects may include Weight gain and frequent game loss.
