Training Camp Opens Today

I'm not even sure if the first day of camp is open to the public - but if it is and if you're going please give us some updates on what you notice or anyone that stands out.  Like all good Americans, the three writers of this site will be watching football all day and drinking...

With the roster announced we'll keep a running tally here and cross out names as players are cut.  Here we go:

I went today. It was open to the public. Any practice session at Johnny’s is.

Random observations… Niemi looked great, was real sharp. Let in 2 flukey type goals but robbed Hendry, Kane with the glove and stone Versteeg on a breakaway. Kopecky didn’t impress me at all, he seemed a bit tired and coasted quite a bit. John Madden is going to be great for us. Is real good in his zone and scored the first time he touched the puck. And he’s a lot smaller than I thought he was. Kaner looks stronger, he delivered a few good checks along the boards, a few to Campbell. Huet looked very good as well, very calm when making saves and adjusting his positioning, not lazy like we saw him last year. Looks like he’s worked on his glove hand as it wasn’t sagging like we have also seen. Brent “Stoner” Sopel looked fantastic as well. Ripped one from the point for a goal and made a few good plays in his own end, he’s looking more like he did when he arrived here in 07. The usual suspects like Towes, Sharp, Cambpell (who also stood out), Ladd, Seabs, Kieth and Hammer looked ready to start the season. Skille was on his game and looked like he had something to prove. Oh, and Byfuglien fell. Quite a bit. One non-roster invite who caught my eye was Bryan Ewing. Has good hands, fast and is good with the puck down low.

Was there

as well and agree on Skille and Sopel. Had a nice, accurate shot. I also thought Crawford looked really solid. It should be a pretty good battle between him and Niemi for the backup spot. Watching Burish reminded me of a kid in a candy store—he really loves being out there. I saw him with his tongue hanging out quite a bit. I also thought Colin Fraser got his a@@ kicked by Bois.

awesome. I wish i could have gone. How did Crawford look? Bill Sweatt didn’t get the invite?

Sweatt is still in college. He can’t participate.
