Hawks-Caps Preseason Thread: Welcome Back To....Machine

Well, if the Hawks are getting warm up games, then we get warm up threads.  So here's your first game-thread of the year.  I expect a few misfires, a few misplaced expletives, some insults and jokes that don't quite live up to our usual standard, and Thor to accidentally put up a whiskey or something.  But hey, it's the preseason, and we're working out the kinks too.

I won't do a full out preview here, but there are a couple things I'm going to watch for tonight.  I haven't seen a roster of who is actually taking the ice tonight (someone please put that up as soon as you can, and we'll add it) but if Shawn Lalonde is one of the active unit, I'm curious to see how he looks.  He drew some raves at Prospects Camp, and should he develop over this season he gives the Hawks some options down the road.  Obviously, it's always fun to see if Kyle Beach will end up in jail or not.

None of the trio of stupid that is this blog will be there tonight, we're still stretching out our hockey muscles.  I'll be down for the next one peddling the waste-of-time rag that is The Committed Indian.  Anyone who is going tonight, feel free to give us a fanpost about the atmosphere and the new additions to The 300 Level.  Actually, that's very important.  If someone could get lots of pictures of the new bars and whatever else is going on up there, I need them for future Indian pieces.  You will be compensated in some way.   Also feel free to write something up about the Fest this morning.

Right, have at it, you salty dogs you!

LINES! (thanks Mike Martin)

Welcome back all

Although it hasn’t been a long summer in the number of days per say due to the Hawks long run to the Conference Finals, it seems though as if was the longest summer that I can remember due to all the off-ice wonderments during this past off-season and so to that: CHEERS! and a thank-goodness Hockey is Back!

Pre-season is just really a harder scrimage practice against another team, especially given the 2 teams tonight- the Hawks and the Caps. Both have aspirations of lifting Lord Stanley’s mug at the end of the season, so both are would be just happy to stay away from the injury bug…although if Sopel were to go down tonight?

As always hope for a Hawks win, but it won’t be the end if they don’t….nice to know that the Hawks are a team now that doesn’t need a hot start in the pre-season just to give us fans hope.

BTW was watching the Notre Dame-Michigan St. game earlier today and was out of the room to get a drink and caught the tail end of a commercial which I thought I had seen the beer advertised Bud Light Wheat? Was I seeing things? And if wasn’t, WTF is up with that?

by HawkInExile on Sep 19, 2009 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...

Neuvirth was the MVP of the AHL playoffs…maybe the Capitals think it’s his time, especially if he continues to play like he has already in this game.
Dumping Theodore’s salary may be an option given that the Caps are much like the Hawks (and other teams) right at the brink of the salary cap, especially if McPhee wants to make a move but needs to see if Neuvirth can handle the NHL level pre-season or not.

by hawks61 on Sep 19, 2009 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Neuvirth isn’t even the favorite to be Washington’s backup. That would be Varlamov, whose elevation to the big club is the reason Neuvirth was starting in the AHL playoffs.

by Dr. Ice on Sep 19, 2009 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Neuvirth played regular season NHL games last year so I don’t know that a pre-season game is going to tell GMGM anything he already doesn’t know. It does help that the ’Hawks iced almost a full lineup, though.

If the Caps could dump Theo’s salary I think they’d consider it but considering the current goalie market I doubt anyone would want to trade for Theo.

A man must have a code.

by Rob Parker on Sep 20, 2009 11:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Theo’s days are numbered… to one more season. He’ll be on the Caps’ roster all year and the real battle is between Neuvirth and Varlamov to see who goes to Hershey and who starts the year as Theo’s back up.

Don't be like a TSN follower

The pre-season is the pre-season, and there are no trophies handed out for pre-season success. Just because your Capitals won tonight with an AHL line-up doesn’t mean they are offically Stanley Cup favourites and that the Hawks (who dressed some of their regulars) are destined for failure this upcoming season.

P.S. trolling after a pre-season win is sad :( ….actually downright pathetic.

Wow. Way to take it way too seriously. I never said anything about the Cup or even the pre-season. I’m just saying I’d be upset if the roles were reversed. Talent wise there was no way that game should have been close. I was just scrolling through after the fact to see the CHI take on the game. It’s not trolling, I’m not saying anything provocative or incendiary. Convincing yourself that playing an AHL team at home is a tough pre-season opener is sad… actually downright pathetic.

Have to admit, it does look like Kane has made an effort to work out over the summer. I saw him get sandwiched late in the game and he stayed upright without whining. Buff looked good as did sharp. My thought's on the game...

I was one of the odd souls that came out for the game today. I know full well that pre-season means pre-season, but here’s afew things I noticed at the game anyway.

1- Skille is going to push someone for a roster spot. I don’t think he’ll get one, but he should make someone sweat. Brouer anyone?

2- Huet is going to do 1 of three things to me this season. Steal my sanity, kill my liver, or both at the same time. He was competent tonight, but still let in a softie for the 1st Cap goal. I know, pre-season…

3- Toews looked stronger on the puck than I remember. he was winning many of the scrums in the corner for the puck. It was encouraging to see.

4- teams still choose to not challenge Kane with the puck on the boards. It seems that they expect him to give it away. when he’s there. Hey he only did like 6 times tonight…

5- The new Ice Crew Girls are not up to the standards of the others. I mean one even fell coming out to clean the ice in the 3rd. That and they look alot more like Luv-a-bulls than I prefer.

6- It was nice to see the bimbo get booed for her horrendous shooting before the 3rd. Well done people!

7- I’m really sick of all things Pittsburg. I am dumbfounded by how many of these douches there are in the Chicago area. It’s a small city for crying out loud. Indy is a bigger place, yet all I ever seem to see are Pens/Steeler scum acting like they are kings of the world. I mean have you ever seen a city get luckier than that one in the last 5 years? 2 Superbowl wins when they absolutely should not have even been in the game to begin with, and if Detroit doesn’t absolutely pee themselves in games 6 & 7, a Cup to go with it. I’m still more pissed at the wings for that than for paddling us. The Pens were like the 6th best team in the East last year. They went on a tear, sure. I just keep looking for them to come back down to Earth at some point. I still don’t know how they beat the Caps and the Wings. I doubt I will ever see something as unlikely as that again. And while i’m bitching, I want to share a little theory with all of you here. I’ve come to think of the Pirates as Pittsburgh’s karmic penance in sports. Their other 2 teams win rather undeserving championships, and then there’s the Pirates who have now gone a complete generation without a winning season. If only the Steelers and more importantly the Pens would duplicate that feat (and soon) I think I would gain some sort of joy from sports again. I really hate Pittsburgh fans…There were more of them than Caps fans at the game. Ok, rant over.

8- It’s nice to see hockey again. Thank the Lord our off season is at an end!!!

Maybe I was seeing things, but I don’t understand how you can call the first goal soft. It was headed wide but redirected directly off of Seabrook’s skate.

I agree. I would have been more upset about the 2nd goal. That was a pretty terrible rebound to kick back into the slot.

A man must have a code.
