A Look at Attendance

As most of you know, the Hawks had the top home attendance in the NHL last year.  While I had heard this was the case, I never really verified it by looking into the numbers.

It is pretty amazing to look back through, year by year, and see the Hawks rapid ascent specifically within the last 2 years.  Numbers like these have, and will continue to, spark a lot of discussion among NHL fans as to the fanbase's motivation.

Star-divide

It is easy for an outsider to chalk up the Hawks recent attendance boom to "fairweather and/or bandwagon" fandom.  Even some diehard hawk fans display frustration and disdain at the chicagoans who weren't present for the last decade.

We are all somewhat familiar with the marketing deficiencies that had plagued this franchise, so I would like to discuss this on a different level.................is this change in attendance primarily due to bandwagon fandom, and more specifically what defines a bandwagon fan?

I look at bandwagon fans as people who really need tangible and well documented success before they are convinced that following a particular team is "the thing to do."  To me, the Hawks have not displayed the kind of success that would justify bandwagon fandom accounting for a jump from 25th in the league in % capacity to first in just 1 short year.

The 07-08 year was fun, the team displayed a lot of promise, but they finished 10th in the playoff race at just 6 games over .500.  Your typical fanbase with bandwagon tendencies would not be that impressed by a team that wasn't even in the playoffs the year before, at least not enough to take the team to 1st in attendance the next year.  The 08-09 year was pretty much sold out from start to finish.  The fanbase didn't wait for the hawks to show that they were going to be a top five team, they didn't need a championship, a division title, or even a playoff birth the year before.  If the 08-09 team was 25th in percentage, and this year's team was first, then you could really contend that bandwagon fandom had taken over.  The 08-09 team gave fans like this something to hang their hat on, the 07-08 team, not so much.

I contend that this fanbase was hungry for hockey, and not just hungry for a sure fire winner.  Are there your irritating 100% fairweather fans out there, sure, but certainly not in the mass quantities that would cause that kind of statistical jump.

I'm not going to pretend that I suffered for the last decade.  I loved the hawks when I was a kid and JR was one of my favorite athletes, but the hustle and bustle of high school, the difficulty of following the team while attending an out of state college, and the general lack of marketing kept me out of the loop until I returned home from school in the summer of 07.  I think that there are a lot of fans like me, who came back to the hawks at the beginning of the 07-08 season when there was nothing but promise, nothing tangible, just a hunger for hockey and an exciting bunch of kids to watch.

I know a large fanbase has its drawbacks, more expensive and less readily available tickets, large crowds, and the occasional "shoooooot," but I think most would agree that watching a game in October with 22,000 fans makes it worth it.  As I walked down Madison after the incredible Game 4 comeback against Vancouver, I saw hundreds of people yelling, waving towels, and honking horns as if we were in the cup finals, it was an amazing sight, I couldn't help but be pumped up.

One city one team does not just apply to the bears anymore, statistics show that this city is committed to the Indian.....and was committed before this team had even won anything.

Agreed

It depends on everyone’s definition of “fair weather” fan. I was in college from ‘99-’03, and even though they went to the playoffs in ‘01-’02, that team was like the ‘98 Cubs…hey sure it’s great they got into the playoffs, but most people knew they weren’t going anywhere. Also, there were some other Hawk teams during my college stint that were just awwwwwwwful. Just because I wasn’t as excited then, as I am now about the team, it doesn’t make me “fair weather”.

Although I made attempts to follow the Hawks as closely as I could through those drunken college years, it was a bit harder compared to my childhood of JR, Cheli, and further back, Savy and Larmer. Plus, it was college, ya know. Anywho, those past teams brought electricity…and the teams of the end of the 90s and first part of this decade were a snooze. But now, there’s honest excitement…Kaner and Towes, Keith and Biscuit…but the aforementioned snooze years? Ummm, the ABC line? Uhhh, yay? And marketing then? “Bring back the roar”? Dynamite.

somewhat off the subject

Does anyone know where I can buy or borrow a copy of Mark Weinberg’s Career Misconduct ? I don’t have a library card, and the book is selling for like $80 bucks used, which I would prefer not to pay.

Anyone have any general thoughts on the book? Is it a good read, and more importantly is the info valid?

Any help would be appreciated.

I read Career Misconduct. Well, I tried to. It’s not that the words were too big or anything like that, but it was just too depressing. Yes, Bill Wirtz was a pretty evil man and a terrible owner for the Hawks, but why revisit that? Reading that book seemed too much like spending hours staring at pictures of your ex wife instead of enjoying time with your new one- maybe you’ll get something out of it, but it’s not really necessary.

If you're in the Chicago area...

You can find copies here and there, but don’t overpay for it, especially when there are still brand new copies around for under 25 dollars.

I think the ’84 Cubs and the marketing geniuses that were over at Clark & Addison could tell you a different story about bandwagon fans.

I think the neighborhood has something to do with it as well. If the UC had become Wrigley Southwest instead of an arena surround by parking lots and the not to distant past of the housing projects you’d see more of the “hanger on” type fans. There still aren’t quite enough bars and establishments around the UC to make it a watering hole like Wrigleyville became.

Sorry I'm late

But I agree. I think part of the large influx of fans was due to better marketing and a fun team to watch. That’s what happened to me. I needed my son to let me know the games were actually being broadcast, so I could start watching. I don’t consider myself a bandwagon fan, far from it. Never have been even though my entire life has been spent here in Chicago (OK, fine I did watch more footbal than usual in the mid-80’s).

If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

Well written hackerar!

As one person pointed out on Saturday that the recent resurgence for the Blackhawks has not brought out ‘band-wagoner’ fans but rather ‘new’ fans. And it is true that mid-way through the 2007-2008 season that the fans in Chicago were indeed coming back to the fold highlighted by the the Hawks coming onto the ice on December 23rd after a 3-2 win over the Oilers in front of a sold-out UC, a night after one of the most special wins for the Hawks in a long, long time when they defeated the seemingly unbeatable at the time Ottawa Senators 4-3 on a OT goal by Jonathan Toews.

And what a night it was for being a Hawks fan through the tough years, living in Ottawa to boot, was extremely difficult at times with the worst being in 2004 when attending the Hawks and Sens game (which the Hawks lost 6-2) there might have been 6 Hawks jerseys in the crowd with about 3 of them having the Indian crossed out with black tape after Amonte’s exile. Needless to say there wasn’t much support for the Hawks back then. But on that night there was a whole section of Hawks fans with a couple of guys sporting the Indian head-dress which was fun to see, and when the Hawks won THAT game there wasn’t one person that was a Hawks fan that didn’t say “We’re Back!”. Rewarding indeed, because why do we fall? to learn to pick ourselves back up again.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

The biggest reason for the huge jump in ticket sales before the 08-09 season probably had to do with the Winter Classic. The only way to guarantee a ticket to the Classic was to become a season ticket holder. Although, judging by the crowd I was surrounded by at Wrigley that day, a lot of those people never bothered to go to any other Hawks games all season.

The numbers are juiced...attendance that is.

I think there’s an even mix of new fans and bandwagon fans…that happens when you win more than you lose.

Now there’s the strange scenario where the Hawks renovated various parts of the 300 level and claimed they took out about 700 plus seats if you look at the old and new capacity figures. Go walk up to those bars and estimate for yourself. There couldn’t possibly be more than a few hundred missing from those sections. Something doesn’t add up unless they’ve removed seats elsewhere.

Winning equals attendance (exception - The Cubs)

But so does exposure of the sport on television. There are more kids in attendance at games than I can ever remember, and they are the future. I credit that enthusiasm to full time TV coverage.

Call me fair weather, but I refused on principle to pay to see the teams on the ice in the twilight of the old man’s tenure as owner. If I had even an inkling that profits generated during the last ten years would be invested in bringing winning hockey back to Chicago, I would have supported the team.

i dont mean to be a dick, but i think 9/26/07 had something to do with hawks fans coming back.

a little of everything

I think its a little bit of everything. I think your point about high school, college and now living out of state is very valid. When I moved back, I went whenver I could from 06-07 (year before Kane got drafted).

What annoys me are people who are now really into the Hawks—and stop it there. They don’t appreciate the skill of other teams and will spout out stats without knowing hockey. For people who are just getting onboard, kudos, hopefully it will widen the popularity of the sport.
