Team MVP thus far?

I'm not sure if the SCH guys are going to post anything on this, but after the mid-season reviews, I thought this would be an interesting (non-huet related) debate................

Who is the Blackhawks' MVP at this point in the season?

Most would consider this a three horse race between Kane, Toews, and Keith.  I'll make a brief case for each, but ideally, I'd just like to spark some discussion.  I tend to think this discussion should go more towards "Who could this team least afford to lose?" as opposed to "Who provides the most to this team based on their monetary value (cap hit)?"  (I've embedded links after the jump that will take you back to the SCH reviews).

Star-divide

Patrick Kane

Brian Campbell's resurgence aside, is there any Hawk that has progressed more than Kaner?  As his midseason review mentions, Kane is on pace for 92 points, which would be a 27% increase from his career high of 72 pts.  While standard +/- has its deficiencies, Kane finished last year with a -2 and has seemingly righted that ship (he currently sits at +15).  The midseason review discusses what Kane's increased strength has done for his puck possession game, and Kaner has taken large strides toward becoming a respectable forechecker and backchecker.  At times Kane's back pressure still leaves just a bit to be desired, but his forechecking has been solid.....just ask Luke Schenn.  Kane's vision and hands continue to amaze and he has shown a real ability to snipe when there is no dime to drop...........but is he the most valuable player?

Jonathan Toews

Tazer's development isn't quite as easy to point out in terms of point production, but as Sam points out, the intangibles are key.  I don't have any doubt that Toews will score 40-50 goals at some point, but another slow start coupled with the early season concussion have probably taken these numbers out of the picture for this year.  Like Kane, Toews +/- is improved and outstanding (+12 last year, +19 this year).  As Sam mentions, Tazer is great at the dot and a horse on the boards, and he has really wowed me on the forecheck this season, the Boston defense is still having nightmares at the thought of Toews chasing them around their own zone.  Perhaps my favorite time to watch Toews is when he is on the PK with Hossa, those two seemingly create shorthanded chances without even trying.  The Kid wears the C just as we'd like him to, you get the feeling he just won't let you down.........the Tim Tebow candidate......does leadership and a full-go persona get you the hardware?

Duncan Keith

If you think Kane's jump in point production is awe-inspiring, take a look at Dunc's.  Flash's career high in points is 44, and he is on pace for 75, which would be a 70% increase!  If Dunc stays on pace for 75 points, he would finish with the highest point total for a defenseman since Lidstrom's 2005-2006 total of 80.  Dunc's vision from the blueline is tremendous.  Whether he is looking for a redirect from one of his forwards, faking a slapper and sliding a no look pass to the wing, or toeing the blue line and firing a shot on net, Dunc has evolved into our best offensive defenseman.  After all of the offensive praise......he is still seen as a technician in his own zone.  Contributions on the PP + a great penalty killer + 1/2 of a shut down defensive pairing = 4th in the league in Time on Ice / Game.  Dunc and his defensive partner Seabrook will be counted on for great two way play against the best the world has to offer come February.  If team Canada is putting so much stock into Duncs, shouldn't he be considered the MVP of his own team?

Note:  I've chosen not to include sabermetrics / behind the net ratings......while I look at them occasionally, they aren't my forte, but please feel free to include them as you back your candidate.

My Vote (not that you should care, but I'm still going to give it to you):   This is a tough choice, so tough that I almost changed my vote to Dunc as I typed the post.......but I'm sticking with Patrick Kane.  Kane is a big reason this team didn't miss Havlat's point production while Hossa was out, he's stayed healthy all year (knock on wood), and has been the Hawk's most consistent point producer.  If we see a jump in Kaner's '10-'11 game like we've seen in his '09-'10 game, we'll be talking about a Hart Tropy candidate.

Please cast your vote and feel free to comment on "your guy", or on anything else I've said for that matter.

Which of your limbs would you prefer we cut off?

This team is not the same without any of those three, but my vote goes to Kaner based on what I’m seeing from him that I didn’t expect to see. Yes, you could make an argument for Keith’s huge leap in point production, or Toews’ leadership and tone-setting play (perfectly descriibed by you, imo) but Kane’s game seems to have expanded exponentially. More strength. Better puck possession. Better forecheck/backcheck. Most of all, understanding his role and the flow and how to make himself as dangerous as possible. Toews and Keith do what they do, they do it really well and get better seemingly with each passing week, but we knew (I think) that’s what we’d get out of them. I’d never have counted on Kane being so much closer to a complete player this quickly. That gets him my vote.

D2K is the MVP

Not only is Duncan Keith the most valuable player to the Blackhawks but he might be the most valuable in the entire league.

Is there a defenceman right now that can dictate the pace and structure of a game like Duncan Keith? No.

The pace and speed at which Keith can play is quite remarkable with the uncanny ability to push the transitional offence at a pace that most teams cannot compete with. Make no mistake that all great offensive teams have thier offence start from the backend and Keith is the quarterback of it all. The way Keith can transition the ’Hawks from defence to offence is simply unmatchable, even by Mike Green and Dan Boyle.

Teams structure their whole gameplan around Keith due to his dominant ability to neutralize their offensive firepower to the point where they keep their star players on the bench rather than on the ice just to keep them away from him as he’s that dominant just ask Nash, Zetterburg, Datsyuk, and Iginla. By the way let’s not forget his +79 over the least 2 and half seasons all the while going head-to-head against the opponents top offensive players.

2nd on a the team in scoring that has the most firepower in the entire league. That on itself should be enough to cement him as the MVP.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

And you know what?

I can’t argue with a word of that either. Five more years of all three of these guys? We’re a lucky bunch of fans, ain’t we?

I went with “Other”, partially because I am a gigantic dick, and partially because I think that both Madden and Sopel have had a large part in what they have done.
Yes, I know that Sopel can be a fucking orange cone at times, but he also gives up his body on an amazing pace. ( My opinion, and completely unbiased by silly little things like facts.)
I also think that Madden does a lot more for the team than just play Hockey. ( Repeat thought from above.)
The question that was asked though, was

“Who could this team least afford to lose?”

Basing my thoughts on the fact that we would “lose” one of the players to a trade, I don’t see the Hawks getting anyone better in return. At least not in a single player trade.
The Hawks have enough scorers to put 12 on the board, so “losing” one of them should not be a “break the team” type of thing.

I used to have a 72 LTD and the entire floorboard and back seat was filled with those bottles. I finally cleaned all the bottles out one day and got 25.00 for them. :)
Back in those days 25$ = 2oz BONUS!

went with Toews

because we DID lose him for a few games, and somehow Kane and Keith weren’t enough to get the team performing the way they do when he’s around.

by chiblackhawks on Jan 13, 2010 8:02 AM CST reply actions

Agreed. Toews gets The Look on his face and you can see that he’s not going to let the Hawks lose that night. Though there have been times where I would have approved the “give Kane the puck and get the hell out of his way” offense this season, Tazer does everything well, and that’s what a team MVP should be, in my opinion.

by hawksfan21 on Jan 13, 2010 7:31 PM CST up reply actions

I'm with you both

It kinda is like asking a mom which child she loves more (really, only have one, then you don’t have to make or verbalize those choices). But to me, Toews is the face of this team, no matter how funny that face may be. He’s our #1 center, captain, and is just always there when you need him (unless he is concussed).

And on top of it, I’m guessing he’s learning from every veteran that joins the team (ie, Madden) and will use that knowledge to further motivate the team down the line.

You know what bugs me...

…these modern athletes, they sign these big contracts, then they disappear! Sheesh!

Great analysis and good comments. Great case can be made for any and all, including a 3-way tie. When you put the pieces together, you realize these three cover EVERYTHING but the big hit, with plenty of overlap.

I voted for the devil-child only because (until recently) the overall team offense has been less consistent than the defense, so his steady offensive production has been more needed.

by cliffkoroll on Jan 13, 2010 8:20 AM CST reply actions

Toews

Point production, leadership, board battles, PK, PP, fighter?
C’mon, Kane is less without him. Towes is probably a little less without Kane, maybe less points, but the other qualities would remain.

However, I may have voted for Seabrook, but he would have been listed as other, and I didn’t want Kopecky or Fraser to get the MVP.

Really, Seabrook has a strong case for this as well because he allows Duncan Keith to do what he does. His lack of PP time hurts his case, but that is Q’s problem.
