Godspeed, You Black(Hawks) Emperors! - Hawks 3, Hummers 0

What a nice sendoff for an eight game marathon road trip. As was pointed out in tonight's Indian, while many in the mainstream media (aside from Steve Rosenbloom and Dan Bernstein) were getting a little itchy as a result of the last two games resulting in losses for the Men Of Four Feathers, we the vanguard of Blackhawks Nation remained level headed, and for good reason. It took extraordinary anomalies to give the Hawks one point out of their last four, and we knew that water would find its own level. The Hawks proved that right off the bat tonight when they quickly converted a Mike Commodore turnover just inside the Blackhawks blue line into a tally at the other end. Niklas Hjalmarsson knifed the puck ahead to VERSTEEG!, who made a hell of a read in seeing Brian Campbell as the late man while still showing shot, and Campbell labeled a perfect shot past Mathieu Garon just a pube over a minute into the game. Throughout the remainder of the period, the Hawks carried the play outshooting the Jackets 12 to 5 in the first, with Cristobal Huet rarely being seriously tested.

The Jackets came out in the second with a little bit more piss and vinegar for the first few shifts, but it wasn't sustainable. Eventually the tide turned, with a couple of prolonged shifts in the Columbus end, most notably nearly a minute of sustained possession by the Toews line in the middle of the frame, but they wouldn't cash in on their numerous chances. Columbus did have a golden opportunity on a redirection from Rick Nash on a rare errant pass from Niklas Hjalmarsson which Huet turned aside and started the transition the other way. Once again, it would be the Madden line who would tally, as Dustin Byfuglien unleashed an EMP blast (best gun in movie history in Eraser) on the rush off a feed from John Madden and Versteeg to give the Hawks a 2-0 cushion after 40 minutes.

Similarly to the second period, Columbus came out with a bit of jump in their step, throwing numerous attempts at Huet in the early going, all of which he turned aside. And once again, the ice would tilt in favor of the Hawks, and they would eventually cash in on some excellent board work from Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp, who fed Duncan Keith on his career high 10th goal of the year. Cruise control from there on out. Hawks win 3-0.

Observations

  • All four lines generated significant stretches of sustained pressure tonight, which is tough for any team to handle. We even saw a one-man, coast-to-coast rush from Tomas Kopecky!
  • Huet was very solid if not spectacular, making 24 saves tonight, often times the save he needed to make, none bigger than the one on Nash. As Killion pointed out earlier, while Cris has pooped his pampers a couple times this year, he's always come back strong in the follow up game, and tonight was no exception.
  • Hjalmarsson was a shot blocking machine tonight, particularly in the third. His being rewarded with the second star of the game was well-earned.
  • Dustin Byfuglien was everywhere tonight, and while the Hawks are still excellent on his out-to-lunch nights, they're nigh unstoppable when he gives a shit.
  • While I understand what Ben Eager was trying to do on his charging call after Hammer got rung up in the corner, he has to pick his spots better and not be so obvious. This is what is going to happen more and more frequently when teams realize they can't beat the Hawks at hockey so they're going to start taking runs, and the Hawks need to keep their heads and make them pay in a smarter fashion.
  • What the fuck was up with the ultra-close Comcast camera shots in the third? There were numerous times when the camera man lost the puck, and the rapid zooms in and out were nauseating. Please stop this, and keep a consistent panoramic view of the rink, powers that be.
  • Let us know what you think of the new format of breaking up the thread in the comments. Tonight was the pilot program for it. Did you like it better this way, or just to keep one giant brachiosaurus of a thread?
Player of the Game
Napoleon_huet_medium

Once again, Frechie came through in rebounding after laying an egg in his previous outing in the collapse in Minnesota. His 24 stops were a fair amount, but many of them came at key times, and he gave the Hawks their league-leading 8th shutout of the year as a team.

…do you realize that they had a total of six – as in 1 2 3 4 5 6 comments for the entire game thread?

I really thought there was more local interest in the Jackets than that….that is really pretty sad.

ouch

All the blogs here do the game preview/recap thing, I assume, but some really don’t have a live thread at all. I know Pens and Wings have very active non-SBN blogs, but with a team like the Jackets I wonder…is this it?

I wonder what the percentage of Hawks fans will be on Saturday—don’t suppose anyone else here is going?

Otherwise, it could be a good idea. But you have to be merciless and close the threads and direct everyone to the new one—how PPP does it.

Yeah

I’m not sure yet how I feel, as we tend to return to non-hockey discussions frequently, and without the threads being closed there were periods of time when I was checking 2 threads.

The lack of lag was awesome. Then again, by the time we figured out there was a 2nd period thread, the period was almost over. We aren’t all the brightest.

I’m withholding judgment on it for now.

Maybe I missed something...

Whats the advantage of splitting the thread into periods? Just for referencing previous posts?

Maybe instead of three separate posts, you could split the thread within one post into 3 segments by having a moderator add a comment such as:

There's 2 solutions

and these aren’t mutually exclusive:

1) encourage more people to go watch the game at a bar instead of near or on their computer. This is good for everyone, especially the Wirtz family liquor business.

2) ban more people, people who deserve it, people who don’t, people named “Kopecky”. Thin the herd.

I’m thinking we should maybe split the game into just two threads… something like pre-game and first … then another for second, third and post. Or Pre, First, Second, then third and post-game in another if we’ll be late with the wrap.

Thoughts?

other team blogs

usually have a preview post, a game day thread, and then a recap post. I always thought this was excessive on account of those blogs never really getting anything more than a handful of comments anyway, but I think that format would work for SCH now that more fans have come out of the woodwork. (See what I did there?)

by chiblackhawks on Jan 15, 2010 11:06 AM CST up reply actions

So, if other team blogs jump off a cliff, our blog should?

This is OUR blog- if we want a gamethread per puck possession, we can do it!

Huet was being wat we expect out of number goalie tonight. Problem is when he flops ,he flops hard.
This douche bad watched the 90-91 Hawk win the President’s trophy with 106 pts and then bombed out oin the first round.
Need Huet to be good and steady thru the play-offs.
Only seven President cup winners have won the Stanley Cup In the regular season teams not individuals win the Pesident Cup-
Inthe play-offs a goalie can make or break you…one game like the last againest the Wild can be devastating in the intense playoffs. We need a rock steady goalie…
So please understand a few of us have been here b4 and know wat is needed from a goalie to win the Stanley Cup-we haven’t accomplished a single thing yet

if you are implying that 90-91 was the goalie’s fault, please note that Belfour (often maligned by the fans) and Hasek (the up and coming back-up) both won the cup shortly (hell, almost immediately) after leaving the Hawks… (Huet and Niemi?)

I’m not saying Huet is perfect, but I am saying we are doing a lot better in the net than some realize… and based on the last 53 years, well, you don’t know what you.ve got til it’s gone.

I’m not sure what scarred me most… 1971 game 7, or seeing Belfour and then Hasek win the Cup wearing the wrong sweater!

they have a point

we are the smallest fanbase of the 5 major teams in the area. Now a lot of that has to do with how the team was run before, and are now taking advantage of the other teams downtrending.

They (radio, TV, print media) have to run a business and thus cater to what a majority of the reachable population want to hear about. Those are just the facts.

Boers & Bernstein love that we are talking about them now.

When we should be giving up our props to Huet. I talked with them once regarding Gretzky’s comments about US Hockey vs. Canadadian Olympic hockey and they supplied me with the sounds of CRICKETS in the background. This had to be in 2002 maybe earlier. It’s strange because I truly am a listener of their show to this day and I have no desire to ever call the show again but they are entertaining and maybe one day they will realize that the hockey fans do listen to them and are entertained by TWO CLOWNS doing a shtick for the paycheck. Good job and I am happy he played good . Just lets not interpret this as a pivitol game where he pulled us from the fire. Thats what defines a $5mill per true #1 goalie. Gump his salary and save some of the ptential FAs that will help us more long term. Again let me repeat for the Huey lovers. Good game Huey please prove me wrong over the long term but I think his money is better used elsewhere on this team and now is your best opportunity to move it. Go Hawks whoever the goalie is

Comcast/game

Was dreadful as you said. My head was hurting after watching the game b/c they kept zooming in close when they would carry the puck through the neutral zone. If someone would have the puck stripped away they would lose it and go back and forth! Not a fan, keep it how it was please!!

As for the game, nice to see Huet bounce back and the D was sloppy at times, but I’ll take the 2 points! All lines looked good but I think the Buff, Madden and Steeg line was outstanding, I’m not sure the puck possesion of a couple shifts they had but damn!

First off, not saying Huet doesn’t deserve POG, he made some great and important saves last night.

Only team in the NHL without a 3-game losing streak.

Relax and enjoy the ride because there have been too many years where the ‘Hawks were basically eliminated at this time of year. The fact that they’re basically guaranteed a spot and are first overall already is fuckin’ awesome. Just enjoy it.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

by Hawk4Eva on Jan 15, 2010 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

gmh has a stat for that!

actually, two posts’ worth of stats.

and funnily enough, we’ve never won a game, in regulation or overtime, where the shot differential is 30+ in our favor.

We’ve won in OT when the shot differential was 20 (against Calgary) or 23 (against the Rangers).

When the shot differential is between 10-19, we have had 14 regulation wins, 2 shootout wins, 2 shootout losses, and 3 regulation losses.

When the shot differential is between 1-9, we have 7 wins, 1 OT win, 2 SO wins, 3 losses, and 1 SO loss.

When we are outshot 1-10, we have 2 wins, 1 OT win, and 2 losses.

When we are outshot by more than 10 (both times by Vancouver), we have 1 loss and 1 win.

by chiblackhawks on Jan 15, 2010 12:27 PM CST up reply actions

Cause and Effect?

Stupid take for sure, buI it is curious that the Hawks own 3 of 5 games lost while outshooting opponents 30+.

This is because, ordinarily, the Hawks outshoot tems by about 10 a game. In the games in question, the other team got leads, then they gave up on offense while the Hawks attacked furiously.

These are frustrating games, but if a team gets a lead and their goalie is playing really well, this is what they do against the Hawks. I wouldn’t be surprised if this happens a couiple more times this year.

As far as shot quality, the Hawks scoring % is 9.62%, which translates into an opponents goalie SV% of 0.904.. Backstrom is currently 30th in the league with a 0.906 SV%, so it would seem the Hawks are generally getting pretty good quality shots.

Scum

There’s no other team I’d rather face in the first round, regardless of our position. There’s nothing even closely resembling a guarantee no matter who we face, and getting Scum would be a perfect way to enter the post-season seriously focused and hungry as fuck. I want a serious test in the first round. Gimme Scum or someone like Anaheim and I would be elated. Rarely does a team win a Cup without a really serious test early on. I want them moving on to round 2 thinking, “That was fucking huge, and we did it.”

Of course, there are some games to play before the playoffs … if I recall the schedule correctly.

hmmm

To be honest I’m a little leery of the Scum. They’re so injured that they’ll be so fresh come playoffs. I’d hate to run into a red hot Wings. Would rather play them in the Semi’s after they’ve been beat up a bit

Oh I’m leery, too. I don’t want it because I think it would be an easy series, but that’s the point I’m trying to make, I guess. I want them beginning the playoffs thinking, Oh Jesus, here we go again, remember how much it took to win a game last year … well, it’s nothing but harder this year.

Troy deserved a heritage night

He was one of the only forwards who could shadow and shut down Gretzky in his prime. There were many games when Gretzky couldn’t get back to his own bench without Troy there to hold the gate open for him. I remember one game where Gretzky had a 20+ game scoring streak going, and Murray almost broke it.. but 99 being who he was, he picked Murray’s pocket at center ice with a minute left and the Hawks down by one.. and shot it in the empty net from 60 feet to keep his streak alive. bastard.

my 2 cents...

i like breaking up the threads. at night, when i’m watching the game, i only have my iphone and when i refresh, i have to scroll all the way down every time. so, it was easier for me, but i know my name is too long and no one gives a shit anyway.

next, a guy at work is insisting that even when burish comes back, you can’t break up this 4th line. i do like the way they are playing, but if burish is 100%, they gotta go back the old line, don’t they?

finally, gotta love the schedule this weekend. with the playoff games on late, no cross-over. good sports weekend. enjoy all.

4th line chemistry

Tell the guy at work that (in my opinion) no one gives a shit about fourth line chemistry. You certainly don’t juggle other lines so that your fourth line that is “working” can stay intact. I mean, they spend the least amount of time on the ice, so the fourth line should be the last one to get figured out. Not that the fourth line doesn’t matter, just sayin.

Besides, if you keep fraser and kopecky with eager at all cost, who do you scratch when burish and bolland come back? Two will be coming in March, so techincally two have to go out (conservation of mass), that being said, I guess they could rotate the healthy scratches.

I think when bollie comes back, fraser will get sent down, and when bur comes back, kopecky gets shut down………..we’ll see, good problem to have.

If Fraser gets sent down

who’s going to lose all the fights? Forget putting the foil on his hands, he might as well make a facemask out of it. But seriously, I agree, 4th lines are for spare parts.

i actually thing your send down order is reversed. when bolland comes back it’ll force buff down to the fourth line and force out kopecky. fraser still needs to play center on that line. when burish comes back then fraser will go.
