The Huet Situation
On any team there are weak points. Because weakness (in the context of a whole entity) always exists, everything has it's "weakness." Now depending on how "strong" an entity is percieved, it's weakness could be considered superior to another entities "strength" in the same catagory. It's a matter of perspective.
Some things to consider:
No goalie that has played less than 10 games in a seaon (pre/reg/post combined) has ever won a Cup.
No goalie that has won a Cup finished a season with zero losses
No Vezina winner didn't lose at least few games
Now when Hossa, Kane, Toews or Sharp go a game or two (or more!) without a point no one screams "They suck! They can't help this team win a Cup!"
Why not? Because we realize they are just one person on the ice with other players. Some games a good plan by the other team neutralizes their play. Some games they just don't "have it." But they come back the next day and try their hardest and sometimes contribute to a win. Why do we expect more from our goalie?
Every goal scored against us is not the result of bad play by the forwards or defencemen. Just like every goal against us is not the result of bad play by the goalie.
On a team that is playing at such an amazing level our worst phase of the game is better than most teams best. After all, only two other teams in the league have given up less goals than us.
And isn't that the goalie's primary job? Stop more pucks from going in our net than we put in theirs?
Huet is doing a fine job of that.

Suggestion
I think all comments regarding any love/hate of Huet posted during the game threads should be redirected here.
I don't know
Are there any other players that are loathed so much that they take up half the post?
Sucker! Competitive violence, that's why you're here!
I would say Kopecky is next, Buff , and then Barker all get alot shit on the ....blog
…..and loathe, hate and other word miss thier mark…….we expect them all to give 110%. The goalie in out there for 60 min( we hope) so they are quite visable.
"Trying is the first step towards failure" Homer Simpson
I Agree
I think the biggest problem is that we’re spoiled with this team. We’ve come to expect excellence from them game in and game out. Win or lose it seems that one of these 4 get ripped on.
Sucker! Competitive violence, that's why you're here!
From the horse’s mouth……
“That was a tough game for me from start to finish, really,” he said. “In the first period, giving up 2 goals and we come back 2-1, then giving up that third one and the fourth one, just a terrible game from me.”
Expect something similar when the Hawks get bounced from the P/Os! The BIGGEST problem for me is I have watched the CBHs for 46 years and NEVER seen them lift the Cup! I guess I am just SPOILED!!!! LOL I have watched EVERY GAME this and last year. Last season Khabby was better than Huet, this season Nieme is better than Huet. What is he doing still in a Hawk uniform????
That's kind of like me
I’ve been watching the Cubs for 101 years, and I have only dim memories of their last title. I’ve formulated some crystal clear opinions on baseball, what makes players good, what makes player bad, and what it takes to put a winning team on the field. Because of my 101 years of baseball fandom, I have insights into the game that you could only dream of, but I’m still going to hold it against you and your intelligence that you don’t understand that Antti Niemi should be starting catcher for the Cubs after he backstops the Hawks to the Cup this spring.
All right, come on, dummy, you won the game. Come on. Pick up your trophy.
That would get rid of our goon problem, too!

I think we all know that....
Pierzynski’s career has been much better than Barrett’s………nobody really picks up a debate point for noting that.
I think we also know that Barrett didn’t punch AJ simply because the Sox have a recent championship and the Cubs don’t…….which is what the ‘envy poster’ implies.
If wanting to punch Pierzynski makes me a douchebag……I’m cool with that, hell, there are probably people on his own team that want to punch him.
"In an ideal world I would have all 10 fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching."

don’t know how you think its a Sox/Cubs thing. I think people are envious of Barrett hitting AJ just because he is AJ. Even the people on his own team. But that’s what I like about him.

See, I took the poster to mean a Cubs-Sox envy, but I did a google image search on it and apparently it came from a SanFran Giants blog……and it really is about hating AJ. Here's my problem with this whole argument:
The people who like Huet are going to defend him no matter what. When he craps the bed it’s going to be either A) everybody has a bad game sometime or B) the defense let him down and, to be fair, both of these things occasionally DO happen.
The people who don’t like Huet will continue to find reasons to NOT like him no matter what he does-i.e. if he had five shutouts in a row it would be becuase of stellar defense, not seeing many shots, etc.
It gets pretty redundant after awhile.
As for me, I think he’s basically an average goalie-not as good or bad as some say and, as, like it or not, we’re stuck with him, I’d just as soon support him and hope for the best.
What worries me the most is that I don’t see him being the goalie who’ll suddenly get extremely hot come playoff time and carry the team through post. Of course that’s where the rest of the team, particularly the defense, has to step up and carry some of the load.
Corny as it might sound, you win as a team and lose as a team. Besides, I’m nowhere near ready to panic and hand over the keys to Niemi at this point.
Jonas Hiller was the hottest goalie in the playoffs last year
and his team didn’t get out of the second round. I’m just sayin…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ii-08G6C6wI
WRONG!!!! koolaidboy lol, GOALTENDING is THE most important piece of the playoff puzzle, always has been. Puet is the WEAK LINK on a STRONG TEAM! Just like last year, the Hawks have won most games in spite of Puet, not because of him. When the exhibition season is over, and REAL HOCKEY begins this will bear out. The Ottawa game was lost b/c they got better goaltending, and a few bounces. The Hawks out-shot them but still came out on the short end. That weak 3rd Ottawa goal killed any momentum the Hawks had. I have seen it time and again for 2 seasons. In a game a few weeks ago Puet let in 4 goals in the 1st period. Neime came in and let in 1 goal, but still got the LOSS. Take that L, and give it to Puet, and look at their numbers. Their is NO COMPARISON! Puet spends too much time on his KNEES! Is it b/c he is Catholic???? lol
I like the Blackhawks
No matter who is on the team.
I have seen a lot of players come and go, and will likely see a lot more. I choose to look beyond every little thing and enjoy what I see.
Could Huet be better? Could Kane score more goals ? He’s not leading the league in goals, so there must be something wrong. He makes the game exciting, though. (Some douche is now going to tell me he is 5th or 6th in POINTS, but I typed GOALS, so, have at it.
Huet does the same thing. He makes the game exciting. I like it this way.
"All questions must be submitted in writing"
My 2 cents
But he does a damn fine job! And he’s our goalie, debating if we should keep him or not, what road we should take is all well and good, that kind of conversation can be a lot of fun, but for the love of all that is holy do not boo Blackhawk players at the UC! Last several games I’ve been at people have boo’d Huet, even in games after posting big wins, that practice just simply drives me nuts!
I didn't make it strong. I mean, its not comfortable, but its not THAT strong!
In my opinion, they do it so that people will notice them. Therefore, other than the occasional earned beat-down, I will choose to ignore the haters, and enjoy the game.
I will also attempt to use the spell check, just to differentiate myself from the dregs. However, I am sure that I will slip from time to time.

FANS BOO FOR A REASON......
when a player sux, he gets booed. THIS IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE! lol Any fan who thinks Puet is going to take Chicago deep in the P/Os doesn’t know the game very well. He is an inconsistent FLAKE! Every hockey expert on TV, both sides of the border, are questioning Puet’s ability. I guess that is just a coincidence!
Engaging noob Huey haters...
…is the triumph of hope over experience, but here goes.
1. The dynamics of Noobs. When you first join the site, you’re all fired up to get into it. Then you run into this weird wall of resistance. What you fail to realize is that your insights are not new, you are a new actor in a scene repeated every week or two, but the other actors are tired of the scene and respond peremptorily, which you regard as high-handed disregard for your insights, and we’re off to the races. To you- it’s all new, but if you stick around a bit you’ll see how fast it gets old.
Now, onto booing (my own personal pet peeve and not a product of incestuous groupthink.)
2. Booing is acceptable in rare instances- stupid, costly mental errors and lack of effort. And of course, not merely isolated incidents, but repeated patterns of behavior. On this basis, I see basically zero reason for booing this year’s team.
3. The Hawks are 35-12-4 (even sicker at home), yet this year alone, I have heard significant booing at the UC of Huey and Soup, and occasional booing of Niemi, Barker, and the PP. I find this behavior ludicrous and embarrassing considering this is maybe the best Hawk team in my 45 years. Sometimes, people (like all the fans who weren’t there three years ago) can get spoiled pretty quickly.
4. The mentality that “I pay my money, I have the right to boo” is legitimate, but undertand that this is the mentality of a consumer, not a fan. After 46 years, I’d have hoped you’d appreciate this difference.
5. So, booing is maybe a catharsis for the booer, but guess what? I don’t really give a shit about your mental state, Nick. Find a better way of dealing with this.
6. Does booing motivate players? Let’s try a thought-experiment. You’re a 25-year old world class athlete, playing in th NHL. Some fat 50-year old big mouth with a mustard-stained Havlat jersey, who maybe played some high school or club hockey, is riding you. Feeling motivated?

By the way Nick, hockey IS a team sport and once upon a time there was this goalie named Grant Fuhr you might want to check out…he won a few cups with the Oilers, never had a G.A.A. below 3.00 and a Save % over .900….Huet and Niemi are more than capable of winning a cup.

Bashing Goalies
Is like bashing QB’s. Bears fans couldn’t wait to get rid of Grossman. They got rid of Kyle Orton. Now they have Jay Cutler. Be careful what you wish for.
Is Huet a top level goalie? I don’t think so. He is a good solid goalie. Is he going to steal you some games? I don’t know. He is a step up from Khabibulin, if for no other reason than he is healthy. Would you want Huet in goal for game seven of the cup finals? (well, hopefully the Hawks would win in five.) But you just don’t know.
Niemi is the backup. Everyone seems to root for the backup. But he is still a relative unknown.
Living up here with the scum and their fans, they take goalie bashing to an art form. I don’t think they’ve had a goalie they’ve really been happy with since Terry Sawchuck. They’ve bashed losing goalies, Stanley Cup winning goalies and all goalies in-between.
Are there goalies I’d rather have? Sure, but, he’s playing in New Jersey.
You can beat Huet high on the glove, and he seems to get caught out of position more than I would like. I like Huet, but I’m not enamored with him. He is what he is and I’ll take the good with the bad. Just when I really start feeling good about Huet, he pulls a Minnesota.
When you look at his entire body of work this season, it’s good. The Hawks have a highly rated defense and the goalie has to account for some of that.
I guess I’m not ready to canonize him, but I’m not ready to burn him at the stake either.

I think the same MORONS were on the Titanic screaming,"Everything is “fine”, don’t panic! lol The Hawks are good this year, but not good enough to score 4-5 goals a game in the P/Os. That is what they will need with the FRENCH STENCH in goal! lol
You're missing the point
Interesting that people here call Huey an average goalie and everyone seems to figuratively nod in agreement. When I say hueys average at best the board lights up. No matter . What we’re not taking into consideration is the long term. I agree with alot thats being said here. Hes an average goalie, doesnt inspire alot of confidence, no record of winning the big game. What makes huey a detrement to this team in my opinion is his salary. $5 mil per. What effect does that or could that have on this team. Salary cap wiseyou keep him you gotta move somebody this year,Versteeg, barker,Sopel,Sharpie,Buff or not sign in the next year, Seabrook, hammer. to accomodate Huey who we seem to be in agreement isnt lights out and for that money he should be. I want to enjoy this team for a lot of years and want to keep as many of those pieces in place as possible and moving a goalie I feel is overpaid and whos numbers are artificially inflated by this teams defense solves alot of those probs. I think the above mentioned players are far more valuable to this team than Huey. I think you can plug in a decent goalie from the trade deadline Hedberg?? whos alot cheaper and can do everything for you huey can and maybe more and save some of the more important players to this club. Now that being said is huey tradeable? I dont know huey lovers must think so and I repeat his numbers are artificially inflated , in my opinion, now is the time to try he certainly isn’t going to be anymore tradeable than he is now unless he goes on some kind of uncharacteristic playoff run, which I hope he does by the way. Also I’m not suggesting even if we were to trade huey that doesnt solve all our money problems I just think it help a great deal with the least amount of impact talent wise to this team certainly in the long run. Just my opinion let the name calling begin
My problem with the "trade Huet" option...
…is that I can’t for the life of me figure out why anybody would take on his contract if he’s as mediocre (or worse) as so many think.
I guess what I’m saying is that in a perfect world, I’d love to see him moved to free up cap space, etc., but I just don’t see any way that’s going to happen.
At this point, like it or not, we’re stuck with him.
At the same time, after watching Niemi yesterday, I have a strong feeling that Q is going to have Huet on a VERY SHORT LEASH come playoff time.
As a friend of mine told me yesterday, it’s ultimately going to come down to how much we trust Q. to make the right moves down the line.

I think after niemi’s performance against the deadthingson NBC he certainly seems to warrant an opportunity to be this teams number 1 guy. Detoilet seems comfortable with the young guy in net and the vet on the bench. Im fine with letting niemi be our main goalie until he proves otherwise
A solid game against a retirement-village team playing the second of a back-to-back doesn’t make him a starter for a Cup contender. QStache has been very judicious in where he starts Niemi.
He’s been a damn fine backup, but his positional play and puckwork is not where it should be for him to start in the NHL.
As far as Huet goes…like him or don’t like him, but learn to love him because he’s not going anywhere. If you trade him, you wouldn’t get equal value in return. Buy him out, and getting a goaltender good enough to fill his role would probably cost the same amount when you factor in the buy-out, which would last 4 years.
Niemi gets spot starts this year. Next year he’ll get more starts, and in two years he & Huet play in tandem.

In my very humble opinion
I can’t see how or why the Hawks can / could trade Huet right now. I think the only thing that they will get in return is another average player getting paid a lot of money on a bad contract.
As far as a number 1 goalie is concerned, I don’t think that matters either. With this condensed schedule both goalies will be getting a lot of work. Since we’re only 49 games into the season, there are still 33 games for Coach Q and his staff to figure out who will start in the playoffs.

Get rid of the poor me ,everyone hates me attitude and learn to read what people are saying.
No one is saying Huet is a Roy or Brodeur. What most people are saying is that Baby Huet is a goalie and he’s our goalie for this year and years to come due to the salary that he was given. You cannot blame Huet for taking a contract that was offered to him even if he wasn’t worthy of it. Blame Tallon
With the Salary cap the way it is in the NHl and especially the Hawks situation there is no room to get ride of Huet’s contract and most likley eat some of it as well as aquire a true #1 goalie. The fact still remains that the Hawks are #1 in SO’s, and #1 in GAA. The team defense will help hide some of Huets faults by limiting the # of shots he sees. In a 7 game series the Hawks can survive a cheap one every so often and still come out ahead. This weekend is a perfect example of that for both Huet and Niemi and the fact the hawks game away with 4 points

Huet will not be traded from the blackhawks due to his contract. No where did i say he would be the goalie they play for years to come. I said he would be a Hawks goalie for years to come. UNLESS they take on an equally terrible contract in return.
I never said Niemi wouldn’t be the goalie either. I’d love to have Niemi play an extended period of games so we have stats to go against to compare the 2. The fact remains that with 14 games you can’t say Niemi is either better than or worse than Huet.

Just commenting to point this out:
Brodeur just let in 2 goals on 7 shots against the Isles, and Thomas let in 3 goals on 9 shots against the Senators. They just pulled him for Tuukka Rask, and apparently some Bruins fans want Rask to be given the starting job and trade Thomas away.
Tim Thomas, of course, being the current Vezina awardee, and certainly one of the goaltenders that Huet lovers, supporters and haters alike would probably consider between the pipes for the Hawks.
Just puts things somewhat in perspective, I guess. Some people will always think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.

Congratulations, you have officially pissed me off with this comment. I normally do not get upset, but you have managed to push one too many buttons. So, from the bottom of my heart, go the fuck away you worthless excuse of a human being, you are wasting oxygen that could be put to better use, like lighting the farts of a 350 pound vegan.

Huet takes heat because he is prone to such horrible games every now and then
Especially games where the Hawks outskate their opponents significantly. However, Huet has done a good job of bouncing back after just about each one of these and his great starts certainly outnumber the atrocious ones. The problem with this in the grand scheme of things is how that comes into play in a 7 game playoff series. IMO the key to the Hawks playoff run is Huet not stringing together two bad starts in a row, or at the very least Coach Q timing a switch so that he doesn’t end up with two goalies that have had their confidence shattered.
CONFIDENCE SHATTERED????????? LOL
Unless one is a PSYCHOPATH, one needs talent, and SUCCESS to gain confidence! Puet has NEITHER!
Great post, Mr. Lava...
Last February, when Khabby went down with the lower body injury, I remember the following trivia question was put on the screen during the Hawks Panthers game.
“Which 2 goalies have the best save percentage over the last four seasons?”
Answer: Huet and Vokoun, who were playing that game. (I couldn’t believe it either)
My point is Huet had stats before he got here, that cannot be taken away from him because of the defense in front of him today.
Do I think he’s a can’t miss saviour? Hell no. Do I think there is anyway we could move him this year and get better in goal? (and this is key) Absolutely hell no.
He is capable of winning the cup. Detroit won it with Osgood, remember him?
Philly would kill to have our “problem”, would you trade for one of their goalies?
How bout a trade with colorado for Anderson? Throw in a few guys wwe’re going to lose anyway? (instead of this Kovi nonsense)
Any great goalie can die in the playoffs. Any average goalie can get hot in the playoffs. 1980 olympics?
I used to be an average goalie, and I had a hot streak once… only once. It could happen, it happens all the time. Have faith. Huet is our boy.
"My Father's name is Jack, and my mother's name is Daniels..."
I find it ironic
that the two teams you mention (Philadelphia & Colorado) have goalies that were originally drafted by the Hawks (Michael Leighton and Craig Anderson). If Huet wasn’t signed, this post would probably have been about one of these two.
Sucker! Competitive violence, that's why you're here!

Totally in agreement. (and then there’s the “other” Brodeur)
I hope we don’t add Huet to the list that includes Belfour, Hasek, Chelios, Savard, etc.
That win you know what god knows where. But I will set my hair on fire (to steal a phrase) if we let Niemi do it
"My Father's name is Jack, and my mother's name is Daniels..."
Errrrrrr Did you know there is another goalie in Chicago..
with much better numbers? Have you considered maybe playing him MORE, to see what he has got? If memory serves Rogie Vachon won a Stanley Cup as a ROOKIE, and so did Dryden.
PUET IS A BACKUP NETMINDER.....
Last year Puet did ok as a BACK-UP, but just OK. Khabby got us to the 3rd round..OK? lol What has Puet ever WON? He hasn’t won a playoff round in his career…OK. (;
Unfortunately...
Blackhawks’ goalie is becoming a job in the same wheelhouse for meatballs as Bears QB and Cubs’ closer…if they’re bad, the meatballs want good. If they’re good, the meatballs want great. If they’re great, the meatballs want them perfect.
Huet is in no danger of having a number retirement ceremony at the United Center. But he is good enough to get the job done for the Hawks.
As for the meatballs who like to pitch a bitch about Huet never winning a playoff series…Kiprusoff made the finals.

I am pretty sure Forklift knows Hanrahan, Suzanne, and has seen Slap Shot. I’m not sure how else to explain what he’s saying so let’s try:
1. I think Forklift was talking about the analogy. If Kipper plays Hanrahan, then who would play Suzanne? Who would other players talk about to distract Kipper.
2. In the manner of some standardized tests:
Hanrahan : Suzanne :: Kipper : ??
or
Hanrahan is to Suzanna as Kipper is to ____?

From what are you basing this preDICKtion, about Puet? What has Puet done for the Hawks to warrant such optimism? Or do you have a CristoBALL???? LOL
Nick, that’s some seriously snappy shit you’re laying down, but…
Since you’ve been watching hockey games for roughly the same amount of time I’ve been hugging this big blue ball we call home, I’m fairly certain that you’ve seen the amount of times the Chicago Blackhawks have been turning over the puck in the defensive zone lately.
Those turnovers have led to some center-cut scoring chances, which nobody in their right mind can expect any goalie to have too high a success rate on. In fact, these are extremely high percentage scoring opportunities.
If Huet sucked as much as you say he does, wouldn’t it stand to figure that the Blackhawks would be worse than second in the NHL in GA, behind only the trapping Devils, who have Brodeur in net?
That’s right…Ryan Miller will probably be a finalist for both Vezina and Hart, and Buffalo gives up more goals.
Seriously…chill the fuck out.

There seem to be an ungodly amount of beings who have suddenly realized that they would be better at running the Hawks than Q-Stache. I wonder if Wirtz is holding a cattle call to interview for a replacement coach?

I have realized this past week that I am not going to break the top ten comments list of this year, ‘cause I am flat out fucking tired of dealing with jackass wannabe douchenozzles that can’t see something good without pointing out faults. Here’s a suggestion, take your syrup-sucking, stump-humping, rump-bumping, whinny-ass back to the “good old days” when Belfour was here. The Hawks had a better than average goalie then, so I’m sure it did wonders for the teams chances in the playoffs. Right? Huet and Niemi are the Hawks goalies, and they are good enough for this team. If they were not good enough, the Hawks would not be sitting at the top of the league.
I now return you to your regularly scheduled flogging of post-mortem equines.

Huet is not all that bad
Not that best, but not the worst. All goalies have a ebb and flow of hot and cold. Huet has strengths in areas where many goalies don’t (has great ground/leg play). However he isn’t as good with the upper corners.
Unless we can get a proven commodity then Huet should stay.
what's a proven commodity?
here’s my thought. Grow our own.
If they (other goalie) are good the other team is not going to trade him. If they are on the FA market, that’s cause the prior team didn’t think they we worth signing and think they already have a better option.

Sigh...
I hesitate to bring this up, but right now the Isles have 3 goalies, and are going to be looking to move either Roloson, or DiPietro. The Isles also currently have a massive need for defensive players. as well as needing another spark plug on the ice to play when Schremp is on the bench.
So, what about Huet, Buff, Barker/Versteeg! for Rolo/DiP, draft pick or two?

Fork, I disagree, Rolo is the reason that the Isles are in the playoff hunt. The Isles D has been just horrible this year. They have won quite a few of their games due to Rolo standing on his head. Bear in mind, I am not a Huet hater, but it would not give some cap relief?
/Note unceasing sarcastic laughter in background.
by burpchelischili on Jan 22, 2010 10:09 AM CST up reply actions
Again, with DiPietro’s contract, there’s no way they’d take on Huet’s deal.
The Isles defense has been bad, but John Tavares is a pretty large part of why they are still in the playoff hunt – that and the implosion of so many Eastern teams, not the least of which is the Flyers.
If – and I say IF the Hawks were to trade Huet, the best they could do would be to move him for 2 or more players comprising the same amount of salary, which would either become players for the Hawks or easier contracts to more piecemeal than in one shot.
My feelings about Huet is, he’s good enough for the Hawks’ style of play. He’s not a great goalie, but he’s certainly not the bucket of suck that so many make him out to be.
HOCKEENIGHT.COM...home of FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS and the HOCKEENIGHT PUCKCAST!!!

I completely agree with you on this.
but John Tavares is a pretty large part of why they are still in the playoff huntI have to disagree with you on this, JT has been a ghost on the ice for quite a few games now. He is a rookie, and it happens.
I have said in the past, that average goal-tending behind an outstanding defense equals wins. On the flip side, outstanding goal-tending behind average defense equals wins. As far as the contracts go, I have no fucking clue. I don’t have to figure out cap space, so I don’t even try. I’m just to lazy I guess. ;)

Roloson is far better than the two the ‘Hawks currently have. Saying that Roloson is a terrible goaltender is flat out stupid and very troll-like as he’s been one of the best netminders in the league for some time now. Please get your head checked.
If Roloson was traded here he would significantly upgrade the goaltending position here in Chicago make no mistake about it.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
Don't burn that straw man...
Nobody here said Roloson was terrible, or even bad. I just don’t think he’s better than either Huet or Niemi, both of whom I think are decent goalies.
And I’ve had my head checked…thing is fucking HUGE!!!
HOCKEENIGHT.COM...home of FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS and the HOCKEENIGHT PUCKCAST!!!
Yup
This year, Roloson is #18 in SV% (0.912) and #21 in GAA (2.71).
“significantly upgrade?” hawks61, I know you touted Giguerre earlier this year on similar grounds. Haven’t heard about that lately.
Anyone gettabble is a lateral move at best. Let’s not pursue this rabbit hole any further.
Let’s stop judging every goaltender based on stats and this year. Roloson has been playing on some mediocre at best teams in last 3 seasons, but when he had the likes of Pronger and Jason Smith in front of him in Edmonton he led them to the Finals where he was injured in Game 1 and if not for that injury maybe wins the Cup and the Conn Smythe.
He also led the Wild to the Conference Finals in 2003 and helped Buffalo discard Toronto in the ECF in 1999 when Hasek went down so he has a lot of playoff pedigree. So based on that I will say that he would be an upgrade over Huet and Niemi.
I’m not so much of a stats guy as I am a person who judges a player based upon when they perform and what significance they had on their team’s performance. Giguere and Roloson where the main reason why their team succeeded in playoffs past and showed they can carry the load when the playoffs arose. You can throw all the numbers you want but in the end it’s winning that matters. Just ask Nabokov who has tremendous playoff numbers but has never shown the ability to make the big save when it mattered the most.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
Khabi won a Cup too
Unfortunately, the here and now is all that matters. To state that Roloson is a “significant upgrade” over the status quo is wrong. In terms of the Hawks’ chances of winning the Cup, this will not move the needle. He might help- but he might be worse.
I’m with you on mental toughness vs. stats. I think you were the guy who shared some great quote from Dryden along these lines (worth digging up again), but a goalie upgrade deal for this team, this year, is an illusion.
by cliffkoroll on Jan 23, 2010 10:16 AM CST up reply actions
I can’t seem to find the exact quote but does go something along these lines: " Don’t judge me on how many saves I’ve made, but when I made them and how many games I won."
It’s the big money games is where you judge a goaltender performance, not the regular season.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

“It’s been our strength really all year,” Bowman said. “If you look, we’re the best goals-against in the league (so) it’s hard to make an argument that your goaltending is bad. I know we play a good team defense as well, but at the same time without solid goaltending we wouldn’t be where we’re at so that’s not a concern.”

Every GM is going to say that as the deadline approaches. It’s just a form of leverage positioning. I’d take what he says with a grain of salt at this moment in time.
