Friday Fung

Just a few things rattling around this bald head this Friday afternoon (apologies to the Afternoon show for ripping off their title, but we rip them off all the time anyway).

-Sassone is decoding the rumblings that Niemi will start again on Saturday in BC.  I feel like I've made this a choice between Huet and Niemi for everyone, and it's not.  I love that Niemi is playing so well.  If you'll recall, my dream scenario before the season was that both goalies would flourish so that we would have our best chance a Cup and Stan "Lookit What Daddy Brung Me" Bowman would have the option of moving Huet along in the summer to clear cap space.  For the most part, that's exactly what's happened.  While Niemi still gets a little flappy mcflap flap to make me totally comfortable, results are results.

Secondly, I think Q knows he's got to bank as many points as he can before the Olympic break.  There's assuredly going to be a hangover for those participating for a week or two (Seabrook looks as though he's already in it) after the tournament.  So as big of a cushion that can be grasped should be.  Also, the earlier the Hawks wrap up a top-2 seed, it gives the coaches the option of having Toews, Kane, Keith, or Seabrook miss a game here or there simply for rest.  I don't think the Hawks are all that concerned with getting the #1 see over San Jose.  Does anyone think we need the home ice to beat them?

-We haven't been quite as diligent as posting the Corsi and Shift Charts for each game, but here are last night's Corsi and Shift Charts.  They make for some interesting reading.  Ladd was a monster last night.  The only reason that Sharp's and Hossa's Corsi numbers aren't as high is that they kill penalties.  For two years straight now, Jarome Iginla has been Invisible Boy against us, and the constant is Andrew Ladd (as well as Keith and Seabrook).  He was matched against him all night.  This is why when things shake out, I'd like to see Ladd return to Madden's wing to give the Hawks a foot-in-the-ass checking line.  But that's another headache for another time.

-Moving on to tomorrow, the Canucks will be without Willie Mitchell, Sami Salo, and air raid siren Kevin Bieksa.  Da-rool, da-rool.

-As much as I've grown to not like the Canucks, they have several fans that consistently make me laugh.  Nucks Misconduct is great, so is the Kurtenblog.  And then comes the green men next to the penalty box, and this video is just well done.

-This is just totally random, but why do linesmen yell, "No!" when a play is onsides?  Shouldn't they yell, "Yes!" or "Good!"?  It seems totally nonsensical.  But then again they're all Canadian.

-Bob McKenzie is now ringing the "Hawks after Kovy" alarm.  Me?  I'm off this ride.  While at first I certainly had a cue ball in my pocket over the thought of a Top-5 sniper being added to the Hawks, I've come to the conclusion it would cause far too big of a shakeup to a team that's already best in the league that isn't short on scoring.  Some of the names McKenzie mentions would just have to be utter bullshit anyway.  Though Sharp has completely transformed his game at center, he and the Hawks would rather have him at wing.  No way they'd move Bolland (and who would take him after back surgery?) as they'd be awfully thin at center for years to come if they did so.  The amount it would take Kovy to the Hawks would reduce them to being able to hurt you on all four lines to 2.5 max.  The Hawks would have two killer scoring lines, clearly, and Ladd could go back to the checking line and form a pretty fierce one of those.  Maybe that works, maybe it doesn't, but the fact that all four lines right now threaten is what makes the Hawks special.

-Last warning for our blog watch tomorrow at Whirlaway (Fullerton and Kedzie).  We'll be getting there about 8:15, so come join us for what should be a complete nightmare.  To pick us out of a crowd, I'm the Scott Ian looking dude, McClure will probably be the tallest guy there, and will certainly have the biggest shit-eating grin and bullhorn of a voice, and Killion's the big leprechaun in the Chinese Toews jersey.  Be there or be stupid.  As always, McClure will be both.

sitting four rows from the glass over at the MetroCentre in Rockford. A couple of my friends and I (and don’t worry, meeshak, they’re people I met on the internet) are watching the Baby Hawks against the Baby Wings, then heading to a bar somewhere to catch what we can of the Canucks game. (Who the fuck are they dressing for their blue line, then?)

I wish I watched “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”. Maybe then I can get into the green man meme more.

And I wish people told Bob McKenzie stuff. That way, he’d have something to write about that isn’t based solely on his opinion and prognostication. Isn’t that what blogging is for?

there's only so much TV I can watch

just haven’t gotten to It’s Always Sunny yet. The last time five different people told me to watch a show because it was amazing and awesome and so so so good, I had to sit through an hour of bad Southern accents and characters called “Sookie” who fell in love at first sight with a fella who was really a vampire.

So I’m a little wary.

Does anyone here make trips from Chicago to Rockford?

Well, I’d guess so—but I’m looking for someone I could go with sometime, it’s not a city I can get to on my own without a car. I plan to see the Griffins play the Wolves on Sunday. But I’d love to make it to the MetroCentre (why is it spelled “Centre”?) someday. SCH roadtrip anyone?

Uncle Nick's for an after-game Gyros...

Rockford citizen here, too. In-laws have season tickets; we’re taking care of two kids so haven’t had a chance to see a game this season but are hitting next week and 2/13’s game.

It’s a good time; it’s cool to say that we saw Buff, VERSTEEG~!, Niemi, etc., before they made it big in Chi-town.

815’s right – Rockford has it’s downs, but I like to look on the bright side – we could be Gary, IN.

btw

People aren’t super particular about seats in certain sections, so if you get a ticket you can usually move around as long as its not packed.

Parking is pretty damn cheap as well.

Keep your head up if you are out late, especially intoxicated. Its not the best area, and shit really starts to hit the fan like a 5 minute drive away.

by 815Sox on Jan 22, 2010 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

Its called "Centre"

Because it is Rockford, Rockford is an enigma. Its also a vortex, everyone tries to leave but we keep getting sucked back.

Centre is probably an attempt to sound sophisticated while attempting to ignore the raging poverty/crime and drug addiction that is Rockford. Our crime rate would be triple what Chicago’s is if we were the same size.

Anyways you can take buses from O’Hare, however getting to the center would be hard.

Agreed re: Kovy

Getting Bolland back will be like a trade . . . and we don’t have to give anything up! Once he’s back, the lines will get even scarier, as in all likelihood you’ll see a Madden/Ladd/Steeg Checking line and Buff on the fourth line. I think the real question is whether Burish will fit in at all once he’s back. IMO he’d be inserted over Kopecky, but there is no way he plays over Buff or Eager, so it’s going to be him v. Fraser for that 4th line center spot…but Fraser does everything Burish does except fight. It will be interesting.

author using a variant of “3” three times

One-timer: Patrick Kane was awarded the Hawks’ third penalty shot of the season during the first period but Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff stopped his forehand attempt. It was the third penalty shot of the season for the Hawks and they have failed on all three attempts (Sharp and Troy Brouwer).

Linesmen

From my experience, just about every time an attacking team crosses an opposing team’s blueline, at least half the defending team’s bench bitch for an offside call (even if it’s clearly onside). It’s especially the case during 1st & 3rd periods when defending teams sit right at their own blue lines.

I think the “no” response to the bench is a habit developed by linesmen from hearing shit from the benches 100 times a game rather than protocol. The intensity of the “NO” is amplied for desperately whiny teams (I live in Toronto) and possibly with young, (cocky?), boisterous, amazing teams.

In re Fearless Leader, #2 Seed

“I don’t think the Hawks are all that concerned with getting the #1 see over San Jose. Does anyone think we need the home ice to beat them?”

I respectfully dissent.

If it were me, I’d go for home ice throughout.

One: you get a nice, tall, shiny trophy. Who doesn’t like pretty shiny things? The two things these Hawks don’t have are (a) new banners and (b) bling. President’s Trophy takes care of both.

Two: thinking waaaaay ahead, do you want to start the (insert name of series here) in Newark? Some Quebecois guy with a glove and a blocker. Name escapes me. Not giving him an extra home game to work with would be nice. Ditto for the District, and Everybody’s Favorite Russkie.

Lock up home ice.

WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE!

While I agree...

that home ice throughout the playoffs is certainly desirable, I am still haunted by the playoff disaster that was the Hawks the last time they won the President’s Trophy. It is interesting to note since the Hawks won the trophy in 90-91, only five teams with the best overall record have won the cup (and only one other team made the finals). I’d much rather have a big Stanley Cup banner hanging in the rafters, than a puny little President’s Trophy banner.

Yes yes...

Winning the Cup is the thing. But getting every advantage we can is the goal right now. Excuse me, but we have been — uh — ungodly good at home. I’d love having that.

Of Course

I want as many playoff games here as humanly possible. I guess it’s my paranoia creeping in on having the #1 seed bulls-eye on our backs. Part of me wants to be a bit of an underdog going in – I guess that was last year’s playoffs. Unless we nose dive, we’re definitely going be one of if not the favorite going in.

I thought

That in the article posted about the effect of the Olympics on the best teams stated that the number one seed was the most likely to win the cup.

wait what?

by pepe126 on Jan 23, 2010 12:06 AM CST up reply actions

#2 seed in the Western Conf

doesn’t necessarily mean whoever comes out of the Eastern Conference will have home ice advantage. As it stands, if playoffs started today, we’d be #2 in the West and #2 overall— the only time we wouldn’t have home ice is if we went up against the Sharks. Hence Sam’s "Does anyone think we need the home ice to beat them?"

by chiblackhawks on Jan 22, 2010 11:07 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah...

I think they’re very concerned about the #1 seed. It’s something to play for, and I cannot by any stretch of the imagination think they’d sit players for a game or two rather than go for the big prize. As for ‘91, who cares. This is a different team, a different year. Past performance, especially past performance 20 years ago, has no bearing whatsoever on this year’s team. San Jose’s suckage has absolutely nothing to do with the Hawks or the team this year. If it is w/in striking distance, you’ll bet they’ll be going for it.

Does NHL pretend Hawks aren't there?

They only acknowledge their games if vs Eastern teams…

well....

we only have 74 pts, we don’t have one of the most exciting young teams in the league, and we arn’t an orginal 6 team… so it makes sense that we don’t get recognized.

there WERE 14 games last Thursday

and as far as entertainment value goes, I don’t think the Calgary game was especially exciting. Especially compared to our other games against Calgary.

by chiblackhawks on Jan 22, 2010 11:13 PM CST up reply actions

I agree it wasn’t the most exciting game, but look at the other games they listed…

It doesn’t crack the top 6?

by Byfuglie33 on Jan 23, 2010 7:52 AM CST up reply actions

yeah, I can't speak for those since I didn't really watch them

but unless they list all 14 games instead of the 6, there will be 16 fanbases annoyed either way that their team wasn’t on the list (if they were aware that the poll existed to begin with). I don’t feel otherwise shafted by the NHL lately— they’ve done a fine enough job of covering our better games, and just the other day there was a piece about Duncan Keith being a Norris candidate, so. Being left out of a poll on exciting games on some Thursday night doesn’t strike me as an indication of being snubbed so much as it is, y’know, the effect of being in a league that has 30 teams.

Will be at Whirlaway tomorrow

I’ll be the one with the boobs.

I just started watching It’s Always Sunny in the past 12 months. I tried to watch it a few times on FX and couldn’t get into it, then watched all the DVDs and absolutely loved it. Charlie’s original Night Man song from season 3 might be the most epic song of all time.

just watching highlights from last years....

big fight against vancouver, trying to get into the mood for 2nights game. God watching those highlights just explaines why they are the most hated team. I fuckin can’t stand this Vancouver team, what a bunch of fuckin girls.

by redtribe14 on Jan 23, 2010 11:24 AM CST reply actions

You know

I always tell myself I hate Vancouver and Calgary the most, but then I watch us play the Wings and realize where my hate really lies.

by illinikc33 on Jan 23, 2010 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

i was like that against the Wings

but nothing riles me up more than us going against the Canucks, haha. Different strokes for different folks, then.

by chiblackhawks on Jan 23, 2010 12:16 PM CST up reply actions

The difference

The Kanooks want to beat you

The Wings know they are going to beat you. Even when you beat them. They still know they are going to beat you.

The arrogance of those guys is unreal. That fucking Cleary!

But back to the Vanucks. Missing a lot of players tonight. I hope the Hawks really bring it. 50+ shots would be nice.

by Johnny Lava on Jan 24, 2010 3:31 AM CST up reply actions

A++

Atmosphere was great— besides one part of the night when they tried to get the crowd to do a wave (sigh, they did). It was really filled with all sorts of cheesy things to get the crowd into it, but it was a lot of fun. The announcer was such a homer it was so funny— when Jake Dowell got into a fight not five minutes into the first period, he announced the 5-minute penalty like it was a goal.

And of course, the IceHogs won 5-2.
