3/14 vs. the Caps
Hi all,
Figured I'd come over and introduce myself. Spending a lot of time on Japers Rink, the Washington Capitals' SBN blog, we might as well say hi to each other, in case we see a lot of each other in June. But that's then, I'm looking towards the March 14 game when we come to town. Currently it's a 6pm game time, and at last check the flex games for NBC broadcast are:
Washington vs. Chicago
Philly vs. NY Rangers
Pittsburgh vs. Tampa Bay
I don't know about you guys, but I could really care less about seeing Carcillo beat the crap out of Gaborik again, and I'd prefer to eat a bug rather than seeing Tampa Bay on network TV. So that just leaves the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the league standings. Your guys and our guys, in two big TV markets on national TV. A game like that should be a no-brainer for NBC to pick up, but it's NBC, look at the headlines.
So that brings us to now. In all seriousness, what can we do to make sure NBC does the right thing here? Are there people to call/email, campaigns to start? What's the best or most effective thing to ensure that as many people see this game as possible?

After the job they did on the last Hawks-Wings game
I hope this one stays off NBC. They can have their Jay Leno and give hockey and Conan to networks that know what the fuck they’re doing.

Based on performance alone I’d rather have this one played in the evening around 7 p.m. as you’d get the best out of both teams. It’s extremely rare to see both teams play well in the morning/lunchtime on Sunday’s. The Hawks-Wings tilt last Sunday was definitely an anomaly.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
Especially since Ovechkin feels “sleepy”

Mcguire
Should have to sit next to Eager. Auction the seat between the benches through CBOE.
Eager’s chin could eat Mcguire

If I were a hockey fan not living in the DC or Chicago area, I’d definitely want to see this game broadcast nationally, even if I do find NBC’s coverage to be awful.

Yeah, this. Even though I’ve got GameCenter and would prefer whichever team’s local coverage they’d give us to NBC’s coverage—and, frankly, would prefer a night game for hawks61’s reasons above—having it on NBC means I can watch it on a big TV with some friends, which isn’t an option for games that aren’t on NBC (transplanted Caps fan living in Seattle so no local station, and we don’t get Versus or NHLN).
Not sure how to get the message to NBC though.

I think NBC's rule of thumb is:
If the Penguins are in it, broadcast it!
The power play is still f**king clown shoes

Seems to be....
The Pens are involved in the Game of the Week for 3 consecutive weeks starting tomorrow. I seriously think the NBC president was sitting in on the creation of schedules this year, just to please NBC broadcasts, since after all the Winter Classic teams were decided by NBC.
Я Харт не так ли?
At least they limit teams to 4 appearances…but that’s Flyers, Rangers, and Penguins right there.
Yeah, agreed. I could care less about the commentary on NBC when the picture quality is so visually spectacular.

I’m pretty sure everyone already knows this.

One other thing to determine...I think...
…is whether it’s an 11:30 AM CST start or a 2:00 PM CST. I’m sure someon with more motivation than me can somehow find which time slot NBC has open that day.

With Football
out of the way, the game should be at 2. but we are talking about NBC
Sucker! Competitive violence, that's why you're here!
That Sucks
We’re in Philadelphia the day before (1:00 game). I would think 2:00 would be better but I’m not with NBC or the NHL.
Sucker! Competitive violence, that's why you're here!
Here in NYC
Just before the Hawks-Wings game there was some kids’ show about a little girl and a dragon or something. I don’t remember the name, but I’m not kidding.
Sweet!
This game’s on my birthday. And I’ll probably be back in Chicago for it! Anyone got any ideas on how to get some tickets?
All right, come on, dummy, you won the game. Come on. Pick up your trophy.
The ones I have two of, not that partial.

Hm… I’ll have to think about that. I do want to see Ovechkin play, but I was expecting a lung or a kidney.

NBC wants to maximize ratings
They want the casual fan — or really, non-fan — to tune in for these games. So, by necessity, it becomes the Penguins Game Of The Week. Tampa Bay gets featured by default. (I think NBC would gag if they had to feature A US Team v. ANY Canadian team. That is just not going to happen. 2 American markets MUST be featured) Sid Crosby is still probably the best known NHL player to the VERY casual fan.
And, NBC would prefer to feature NY, Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Washington. The Blackhawks are not in that elite category — yet. (Washington is only ‘elite’ becacuse of you-know-who.)
NBC games are NOT for the hard-core fan. These games are for people who may not watch any other NHL games all year, save for the Stanley Cup Finals and the Winter Classic. Be thankful there are some NHL games that ALL of America can see.
Remember, NASCAR ratings are way better than anything the NHL can score on American Network TV. Shameful, but that’s the way it is for the NHL. Nobody gives a damn about the league in so many areas of the country, but will still tune in for an NBA snooze-fest if the Lakers and the Cavs are on.
Hey, if the Hawks do go all the way — they will probably get the nod next year by NBC over the Pens…
Unfortunate that Versus has re-upped with the NHL, but….if Comcast has its’ way — now that it has purchased NBC/Universal and its’ cable networks (Versus is one of those nets) you could see Comcast dumping the crap on VS and going full-bore to reformat that channel as a challenger to ESPN — then, you’d see clearence on satellite networks that are not carrying VS.)
Then, VS really becomes an extension of NBC Sports, (or, maybe it’s the other way around) and this could mean big changes in the Sports TV landscape in the coming years.

I’d say we’re hardly elite because we’ve won squat. You guys got deeper in the postseason last year, so by extension I’d say you’re better than us.

I don’t know if there’s a lack of hockey on TV. With my local Comcast affiliate aside, I usually get two games a week on Versus, a Thursday and Saturday game on NHL Network, and an NBC game. Throw in Comcast Sports Net, and there’s almost a hockey game on every day of the week. My biggest wish for it to be broadcast on a bigger station would be so that everyone else would be able to watch hockey, giving it more headlines in mainstream media.

Yes. I'm referring to an 'elite' team
in NBC’s ‘opinion’ for ratings purposes, only.

The fourth flex choice
Looks to be Colorado – Dallas, a sexy matchup if it’s 1998. I can’t see Pittsburgh being chosen for this week (and if they’re chosen for the March 7 matchup, then they can’t be chosen) only because Tampa Bay will pull them down. And although a Philly – New York matchup would feature two teams that would barely be in the playoffs at this point, I think that NBC might take one of their only shots of the year to get the Blueshirts in the game of the week.
