Campbell For Kids
Hey everyone, I got an email today from the marketing director and 51 Phantom's new charity, and he asked that I put this up here, and I'm happy to do so. It's the press release for Campbell's upcoming charity even.
Brian Campbell’s non-profit organization launches today with announcement of fundraising tournament
Chicago, IL -- Brian Campbell, Defenseman for the Chicago Blackhawks, is asking you to put your money where your heart is as he hosts a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament, in conjunction with Horseshoe Casino, to raise funds for his foundation, ‘Campbell for Kids.’
The Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament will take place on February 10th, 2010 at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana, Horseshoe Casino’s premier event facility, The Venue, a previous site of the World Series of Poker® Circuit Events. "The tournament is a way to raise awareness and funds for a great cause and have some fun along the way," says Campbell.
Guests will enjoy a star filled gaming experience with tournament players that include members of the Chicago Blackhawks, Blackhawks Alumni and other celebrities and professional athletes. Confirmed players include Adam Burish, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp, Patrick Kane, Brent Seabrook, Blackhawks Ambassadors and Hockey Hall of Famers Tony Esposito and Denis Savard. "As an added benefit to participants, any player who is responsible for eliminating an athlete or celebrity player from the tournament will literally get the Blackhawk’s jersey off their back," says Campbell. The event’s Admission Ticket is priced at $115 and includes drinks and dining, up-close tournament viewing, live casino gaming, entertainment and auctions with one of a kind packages. The Poker Tournament Buy-In is $125. Cash prizes will be awarded to the last standing tournament players.
Proceeds from this inaugural event will benefit the Chicagoland Chapter of Autism Speaks which is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders and to funding research into prevention and treatments of Autism. The event will also benefit Chicago’s Beard School which provides educational programs for children, ages three through nine, who have severe autism and/or emotional disorders.
Campbell for Kids, a nonprofit organization, is a foundation established to raise funds for charities that serve children with special needs and learning disabilities throughout Chicago and the state of Illinois. The primary focus in this first year will be aiding services that focus on Autism. "I wanted to find a way to give back to my community," says Campbell. "But more importantly, I wanted to focus on organizations that are near and dear to my heart." Campbell’s interest in helping children sparked during his years in New York playing for the Buffalo Sabres. While in New York, Brian spent time volunteering at the Summit School which provides special education for children and young adults with disabilities.

Sounds like a cool event......
but $240 to play in the tournament might just price me out.

I'm priced out too for the gambling
But going for the unlimited food and drinks sounds like that could even be quite a bit of fun.

I hope they keep doing this for the next few years.

the alberta oil sands are always hiring
but then you wouldn’t be able to attend and your soul would slowly be destroyed as you’d be complicit in the destruction of Gaia. at least you could watch the Oilers on your brief visits to the outpost of civilization that is Edmonton.
god, don’t take a job in the oil sands.
All right, come on, dummy, you won the game. Come on. Pick up your trophy.

My poker skills are sadly lacking
but it might be fun to attend and give to a good cause. Nice to see athletes giving back and meaning it.

I'll have to see
sent e-mail to Hubby. Unfortunately, even though I’ve never actually played Texas Hold’em, I don’t think he realizes that I used to be a pretty decent poker player. I’ll see. I really won’t want to do that drive on my own though, not with only 1 day to recover from St. Louis (the older you get the longer it takes for recovery).

wouldn't you have like three days to recover?
STL is on 2/6, the poker tourney is on 2/10
am I missing something?

Oops
I looked at my calendar wrong was one day short. But still the plan is:
Hung over on 2/7 and 8.
Catch up on things 2/9, while still tired.
That does give me the 10th to start again.
I guess it’s doable.

Nice to see Brian Campbell and the ‘Hawks do a some fundraising for local charities as it’s probably the best way to interact with the fans all the while raising awareness for the charity. The NHL is probably one of the best league’s in doing things like this and great to see that the athletes we cheer for show some so much humanitarism.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

Hear hear
As a father of a son who’s been diagnosed with Autism, thanks to Sam for posting this but ultimately thanks to Soupy and the other Blackhawks involved for doing this.
Anything, whether awareness of the disorder or funds raised to help with therapy or treatments for it, is a godsend for the children and families involved.
I wish I could be there as it’s in my old haunting grounds of northwest IN, but it’s not going to happen. Would be fun, though!

any idea?
how the drinks included in the package work? if this is an open bar type gig (which i highly doubt) then i am 100% in.

I’d be willing to bet that each person gets a number of drink tickets, having open bar would risk making the cost to hold it too high and limiting the amount of money that goes to charity.
wait what?

I play a lot of poker
kinda my only income at the moment, so I’m not complaining, :)
Anyways, I contacted the poker room director at the Shoe, and asked for information on the structure and starting chips, etc, I haven’t heard back , but I do know they are only paying 5 spots
1st Place: $2,500
2nd Place: $1,500
3rd Place: $1,000
4th Place: $900
5th Place: $800
So I’m assuming this is going to have lots of players, and normal tourneys pay out on average 10% of the field, I’m guess they will have well over 250-500 players, so playing to get the top five, is going to be rough.
That said, I’d still play if I could pay the $125 buyin and skip the food and drinks.
Maybe they’ll change it for next year

Thanks for the info
I’ve never been to anything like this. Still on hold to see whether I’m going to go or not, it’s not something I really want to go to by myself.

I feel the same way...
I would definitely just go for the poker at $125, but I really don’t see them changing this. I guess it depends on how successful the event is.
