Hawks and Snow-Covered Hicks: 3rd Period Thread

That EVERY TIME he gives up a goal in a somewhat critical situation someone always says “Well SOMEtimes you JUST HAVE TO BAIL OUT YOUR DEFENSE” Can anyone see the irony here?

Even when the defense breaks down, your goalie has to come to the rescue. The 4th goal was Huet’s only bad goal. Two were tipped/redirected. The 4th was on him. You would hope that at least one of those two tips he might have been able to do something.

But he didn’t.

It funny that the same people who defend huet’s save percentage by saying the hawks great defense blocks all but the best shots are the same people who blame the defense for every goal huet gives up. You can’t have it both ways.

A few weeks back in a HNIC game, with the Pens playing a goalie from the WHL, the team was surprised that the kid didn’t go into the butterfly very much.

On this road trip

23 GA is simply not good enough on both parts: defensively and goaltending.
3 GA or more in 6 of the 8 games with the only 2 against Calgary and Edmonton.

That's a great observation

The goaltending……is as good as its’ defense.

The defense has not been good on this trip. However, there are times the goalie must bail out his defense. Not sure if Huet can do that, though when it’s really gonna count.

Cam Ward is one of the best in league and maybe the best after Brodeur.
Huet isn’t a top notch goaltender and given our play of recent maybe we do need a better goaltender just to hide some of the deficiences are defence has.

This team is now healthy, and is way better than their awful record which was part of their early season woes. They are playing about 500 now, and are good at home, even in front of 5K.

I believe Pittsburgh was the worst team at faceoffs in teh league last year. Result: Stanley Cup Champions. Faceoff % is nice, but has no direct real correlation to success.

There has to be some sort of BABIP

stat (for those familiar with baseball) with shots. it seems highly unlikely that the hawks can outshoot their opponent in a handful of their losses and still lose without there being some sort of fluke agent.

To hockey because the defenders in baseball are stationary whereas in hockey everyone is moving and a shot from center ice would be measured against one from 10 feet with no interference. With that said I think Kanw was 1 on 1 with Ward about 5 times with nothing to show. I still can’t believe they only got 2 goals and then Car bunts in a high shot and gets a redirect from I believe Seabrook which Huey should have covered since it was 30 feet out.

but I’m simply thinking distribution of probability. Again like you said it would be very difficult because you would have to actually have a weight on skill set for netminders and I’m sure a dozen other attributes.

Being realistic might be the best solution

Huet is an average goaltender on a very good defesive team. But, far too often cannot up his level to steal the Blackhawks a game. Thus, the ‘Hawks come March 4th may have to look elsewhere for a better goaltender. Who that would be? I don’t know, but I’m sure the braintrust has someone in mind.

It’s just a reality that if the ‘Hawks want to win the Cup our defence can carry us so far, our goaltender may have to steal a game for us to get where we want to go. I don’t think the ’Hawks can go as far as they did last season with average goaltending.

Huet has yet to carry any game. This is why the concerns many have are very valid.

I know many of you are trying to stay positive, but please be a little realistic and look at the mans track record. When our defense has a tough game he can’t seem to hold it up.

Yes, some of the breaks were defense, but a good goalie (one that will win a cup), wins those chances.

Not being a hater, just assessing a the very achilles we have.

Lights out in Game 5, but basically turned out the lights at the UC because of his play in Game 4.

The 7-game series between Washington and Philadelphia is a better indication on how he can perform in the playoffs. And it wasn’t good according to everyone from Jasper’s Rink, that’s all I’m saying.

It also means that some players and goaltenders can rise to the occasion and others can’t. Look at Thornton, Green, and Luongo. Great regular season, putrid post-seasons.

from my memory

those games were dominated by offense by our hawks….i remember at least two of those where he saw less than 2-3 major chances any single period, let alone one in the entire game maybe 5 major chances

Most people do believe he really is the achilles heel, but our defence (contrary to opinion) isn’t as great as others want to believe it is. And because of this management may have to make a decision on either sticking with Huet or dealing for another. It’s not so much Huet as it’s the defence.

Honestly as far as picking up a better goaltender

I dont think thats gonna happen, they arent exactly a dime a dozen and I wouldnt want to sell the farm for a true number one when we are doing so well with what we have (Huet/Niemi rotation). Ive seen Huet give up some weak ass goals and I dont trust him in a game where we need 40+ saves, but the beauty of the Hawks D is that it is extremely rare that the guy has to face that many

I'm tired of hearing this.

Not to pick on you but it’s something that irks me. It’s not the quantity of shots faced but the quality of shots he faces is the problem. Maybe it isn’t so much Huet as it’s the defence that never bothers to move anybody from the net allowing difficult tip-in shots, breakaways, and 2-on-1’s.

It’s because of this the ‘Hawks either need to improve their defence or get a new goaltender. This combination isn’t going to work.
