Nope, don't have anything for this. I know, strange right?

Okay, first of all Air Traffic AJ.  McClure's Wolverine, Matt gets to be Mr. Fantastic, and I end up being The Watcher?  Is this because I'm bald?  Totally not fair.  McClure's not fueled by rage, he just holds on to that teenage angry-at-nothing-because-I'm-supposed-to-be-and-don't-know-any-better thing.  The Watcher.  Unbelievable (For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, please read the beginning of the 3rd period thread).

Anyway, the fact that I chose to lead off with comments about the comments lets you know I don't have much emotion about this one.  But do check out the Corsi Numbers.  Keith's +24 might be the highest number for a single game I've ever seen.  The rest are pretty silly too.

We were all afraid of this game, and not helping was a snowstorm on Tobacco Road that left a dead arena.  We kind of thought the bus would be running, but I'm not sure it was.  I mean, 41 shots is 41 shots, and some of them very prime chances.  It wasn't so long ago that suggesting Cam Ward should be Canada's starting goalie in the Olympics was not greeted by laughter but was completely logical.  He showed you why tonight.

The 1st was kind of a nothing period until the very end.  The only goal Huet gave up that I have complaints about, as a blast from the point that hits you in the chest should be swallowed up.  Still, it bounced to Tom Kostopoulos who should have been tied up by Keith and/or Seabrook.  He wasn't, and the puck found its way to Sergei "Yes I Still Play" Samsonov for a dunk.  Terrible time to give up a goal.

Still, didn't seem to affect the Hawks greatly, they came out flying in the 2nd and buggy-whipped the Canes 16-6 on the shotboard.  Hossa made it count with a wicked backhand.  But equality wasn't didn't survive long, after a nifty passing play between Staal and Andrew Alberts left Jokinen with an open net that Huet was unlucky to not pull off a miracle save on.  I think this came after Keith completely air mailed a blast wide that led to the rush, but I'll check.   When you're luck's out, it's out.

Again, a late goal didn't seem to faze the Hawks in the next period, and they found parity quickly when Ladd buried a chance after more good work from Hossa (fucking Christ he's awesome).  But again, egalitarianism was to be an early casualty.  Campbell and Kane got caught puck-watching, leaving Brandon Sutter (he of the 15 uncles) dying of loneliness in front of Huet, allowing plenty of time for a sweet tip of Chad LaRose's blast.  Moments later, Mark Cullen didn't have his stick tied up by Keith and he was able to tip in another fine goal.

Though the Hawks had some chances after that, it was pretty much over.  Whatever, I can't sit here and complain about a 5-3 road trip.  And I can complain about anything.

Observations
-I know buildings should be allowed to chase every event they can to turn a profit.  But what tin-headed moron schedules a basketball game a mere five hours before a hockey game is supposed to take place?  There had better be another event there tomorrow.  Though both the Staples Center and and TD Bank Garden host hockey games and basketball games on the same day, the hockey always comes first, presumably to help the ice.  With the Hawks long trek from San Jose preceding this, I'm assuming an afternoon game was out of the question.  But the ice was awful.  How many pucks bounced away from both teams, ruining chances?  Good and clever play should be rewarded, and building/ice quality is something the NHL really needs to look at.

-The Brent Seabrook Magical Mystery Tour continues.

-The Hawks got horsed in the faceoff circle in a manner that Catherine The Great would have been proud of, 32-16.

-It's comforting to know that the Hawks have two forwards who can absolutely dominate entire games in Hossa and Kane.  It was Boss Hoss's turn tonight.  I think only Pittsburgh, San Jose, and Detroit (possibly Vancouver, though the Sedins really count as one) could boast of such a thing.

-Good god was the officiating terrible.  How many calls did they miss?  12?

-The 6-on-4 power play looked worse than the 5-on-4 normally does, which is saying something.

-I know people around the country are going to read Huet's stats tonight and we'll have the pleasure of reading more columns and blogs about he will keep us from winning, but even Mr. Fantastic/Killion couldn't have done much about three of those goals.  But we're the only ones who know.

-Whatever, the trip's over, and for all the teeth-gnashing and complaining, 5-3 is a successful trip, especially when it has wins against Detroit and San Jose in it.  Like the Hawks will themselves, we're taking the day off tomorrow (McClure's out with his whole family tonight, he won't be awake until 5pm Sunday, and I'll probably be joining him).  We'll talk again on Monday, enjoy the rest of your weekend.  .

Yeah, that was fast!

But this’ll be the last post till Monday…we have a day and a half to chatter/complain on this post. Unless someone writes a great fanpost we can have an intelligent discussion on. Er…doesn’t look like that’s happening tonight.

hmmm…well mostly that was a reference to the horrific Campbell post (wow, someone joined today JUST to post that!). But if someone wants to write a good one, that’d be cool—no pressure. I’ve still never done a fanpost but I keep thinking of just posting some vintage stuff from my collection, can’t go wrong with that.

Wiedeman, Murray, and Sirott

seemed pleased by the way the ’Hawks played this game, despite the result. They credited the effort in coming back to tie twice, and the fact that they basically swarmed Ward all night. Which I agree with, but no one mentioned the defensive lapses that we all pointed out.

I didn’t get a chance to listen to the call-ins, though, so maybe a listener brought it up, but given the intelligence of most radio callers (sportsgal not included), it’s pretty unlikely.

Anyway, they said it was a highly successful road trip given the traveling conditions and opponents faced—everyone’s probably in agreement on this point—but the ‘Hawks also looked off for most of it. The games at Ottawa and Vancouver were two of the worst they’ve played this season, and there were several others that they seemed to coast through. Hopefully the three days’ rest will help rejuvenate them (especially Seabrook, my god, someone just knock him out for the next two days), as well as returning to Madison Ave.

Nothing listed on the RBC Center website until Wednesday.

Completely inexcusable not to play this game tomorrow if there’s nothing in that building. Would have made the cross-country climax of the trip easier to bear, and preserved the ice.

by Dr. Ice on Jan 30, 2010 9:42 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I was pretty peeved about that myself

Pretty fucking dumb to have a team fly cross country and not have the ice ready. No excuse. The Hawks’ D didn’t show.

I agree with you there especially since many of the fans couldn’t come out to support the team. The NHL should’ve done a better job in this scenario.

We went to the game Saturday.

We live in Charlotte and if we hadn’t left Friday (a day earlier than planned) we never would have made it to the game on time. This ain’t Chicago, folks, and the slightest bit of snow wreaks havoc — and this was more than a little bit of snow. The roads were terrible, the parking lot at RBC was an ice sheet, and the Governor smartly told people to stay off the roads. The game was a sellout but because of those factors only 7,000 people made it.

As for scheduling basketball and hockey on the same day, the RBC Center does it all the time. For us, hockey might be king but around these parts, ACC basketball rules over all else and that is the simple reason the b-ball game preceded the NHL game, and why the ice was so horrible.

That said, the RBC Center wanted to cancel the game (according to the folks we spoke with) but the NHL mandated that it go forward because both teams and the officiating crew had made it into town. I know a lot of folks consider this area a hicktown and all but the Canes’ fans are really good fans and it was frankly surprising that even 7,000 showed up.

Huet

is Huet. Can’t blame him for the loss anymore than I can blame him for his salary. His agent did his job getting him that kind of money, because he’s an average goalie at best. But I do grow a little tired of “nothing Huet could’ve done about this goal… or that goal.” Stats speak for themselves, especially over time… and if he isn’t even in the top 30 in the league for SV%, then he’s either not having a good year or he’s not a good goalie. So be it. It’s our one weakness and it’s been hidden by our prolific offense.

Over his last 10 games, his SV% is .875 and his GAA is 2.99. That is shit, plain and simple. But we have survived with him and I think we can win it all with him in net. It’s just going to be ugly some nights.

I wish Q would give Niemi 3 starts in a row just to see, but that probably won’t happen. Oh well.

1961 is a long time ago.

by HawkJaw on Jan 30, 2010 11:58 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

i agree

part of the problem that might have been caused by these two average goalies is that the defense has had to be perfect since the 2nd/3rd week of the season behind their blue line while being studs on offense. They seem tired and sloppy these days.

I think both goalies will eventually get back on track, but they’re both insanely inconsistent and not doing the rest of the team any favors.

Huet’s month of January’s (thank goodness it’s over) save percentage would be lower then all but one goalie in the NHL (Vesa Toskala) by .001.

by aeroplane1 on Jan 31, 2010 9:32 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

A couple of observations....

First, Huet was not good tonight and has been shaky all month, stats bear that out. Second, what the hell was he doing in goal tonight anyway? He should have been on the bench taking a rest after playing several games in a row on a long road trip exaggerated by a long cross country flight after a late game on the west coast on Thursday. I put that on the coaching staff. I am not one for excuses but I am sure Huet was not feeling 100% tonight. As you all know, I do not have much faith in Huet, but tonight is not all on him. There were some bad defensive plays tonight and some bad bounces.

by Esquire02 on Jan 31, 2010 12:01 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

One other thing

Just because people on here question our goalie’s competence does not make any of us bad fans. There is nothing wrong in pointing out what we think is a weakness on the team. It doesn’t mean we don’t want him to do well or are not 100% committed to the team. Fans in all sports question players all the time. That is part of being a fan. Being a fan doesn’t mean you out on blinders and don’t discuss these issues. I guarantee you that all you Huet apologists criticize other athletes on Chicago teams, just listen to sports radio around here. People bitch about stars in this town all the time. Why do so many people here prppose that we should never say a bad thing about him because he is “our guy”? That is ridiculous. Finally, for those of you who say that fans booing him occasionally at the UC or writing bad things about affect his performance, GET REAL! if you really think he is that sensitive then he really has no mental toughness and composure. A pro athlete should not be affected by that and if he is he should find a new profession.

by Esquire02 on Jan 31, 2010 12:13 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think that's fair enough

Although I don’t support booing him (I wouldn’t even boo Kopecky if I saw him, I’d just kick him in the nads) publicly, do what you want at home, or online. However, as you can see now that you’ve been here, it seemed like all of a sudden people showed up ONLY to bash him and add nothing else to this great place. It got tiring, and interrupted fun, non-relevant, discussions. Plus, many were bashing him for some things which weren’t his fault, or just saying “trade him” with no plan of how that could be accomplished. It just got boring, and we don’t like to get bored.

i haven't much Huet bashing

the atmosphere surrounding him is very touchy. People are attacked for saying he’s not doing well.

For example, in the previous game I stated that his game against SanJose was a “nice change” and at least 3 people jumped on me for saying so. Someone had the need to tell me to “shut the fuck up” and someone else claimed I was “bashing him”.

okay. I understand negativity can be a subjective thing. But I think negativity is at it’s worst when people become reactive.

So, I think we all know that Huet will get his game back at some point. He always does. In the meantime, it’s okay to talk about how bad he’s been, because he’s not winning us any games right now.

I think the whole thing

Is a point of major frustration amongst the fan base. I often let out a “what in the unholy fuck are you doing Huet!” while watching games. My points last night were more or less that we are kind of “shit outta luck”. Yeah I agree, goaltending right now is our achilles heal, and that weakness is going to have to be defended to the point that it is subjected to bear minimum exposure if we expect to take on Detroit, San Jose, The Caps, Pens etc in the playoffs and Stanley Cup Final. Right now there is not a solution to this problem, and we wont see one (this season). We have some damn fine players on this team, and they are good enough to protect our weakness (provided they dont fall into some kind of defensive funk, a la last night’s 2 fails in the Hawks zone). We know goaltending is not top notch for us, but there is no acceptable solution in sight. I think as fans its time for us to hang up the conversation about goaltending woes (as they are well known and established), and enjoy watching a badass hockey team fight (and hopefully win) their way through 82 games and beyond. GO HAWKS!

I was the one who dropped the STFU

probably too stong on that, but as I read here, you have a warped memory of how it all went down.

The scene:
It was 3-0 Hawks, everyone was enjoying themselves, and then the Sharks scored.

Summary of your comments after that goal:

huet is just so… not awesome.
(Nabakov) has at least faced some good shots.
what’s unbelievable is anyone who backs that turkey.
nah dude. I’ll back the "team" but not some average goalie.

and before I dropped the STFU, I tried to reason with you……
by saying…take it easy, we have a 3 to 1 lead.

Huet gave up 1 goal, and it wasn’t really his fault and you freaked out and started posting a bunch of garbage, and I got pissed.

You may have said at some point later that Huet’s game against SJ was a nice change, but don’t make it sound like that was all you said.

Agreed with a few people and my own two cents.

I wish Q would give Niemi a few more starts in a row as proposed by HawkJaw. We have seen both of them not on their A games and pulled out victories. Also, we have talked before how Cris has not been the full time goalie before. As we finish up the 58th game of the year, he is only 12 games off from his most started in a season, and I would guess he would get more than half of the remaining starts so we would be venturing into unknown Huet Territory.

I have to admit

I’m a bit anxious,i know there is a ton of hockey left, but it seems as though the Canucks are gaining ground on the Blackhawks,It would be great if the Hawks could get some separation from the Canucks before the Winter Olympics….And i too would like to know what happened to Seabs, his play of late hasn’t been that great, and the Olympics won help either, even though its only like a max of 7 games i think….

The best part of all this is the Hawks are having a slump, and even during their slump they still have won 5 games on the road…maybe us fans are just a bit too spoiled, and we expect them to win every game, and expect every line to play perfect hockey all the time

I agree

I was thinking the same thing about the Canucks the other night watching the game. Even though they beat them last year in a playoff series, it seems that the Canucks are playing great hockey (better than last year) and have the combo of size, strength and speed to stifle to the Hawks offense. The Hawks struggle to score on them. I am actually secretly hoping that someone else knocks them out of the playoffs so we don’t have to face them

by Esquire02 on Jan 31, 2010 2:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Eh

Vancouver smoked the Hawks last March in Chicago, so they don’t scare me any more than they did a year ago.

Having said that, I vividly recall being down 2 games to 1 and within two minutes of being down 3-1 last year, before Ladd and Havlat’s heroics.

The Hawks ran the table for a 4-2 series victory, but I’m sure Vancouver fans remember being close enough to taste the WCF.

Them spooky bitches are pretty good, but fear? Nah.

by cliffkoroll on Jan 31, 2010 2:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If i recall

correctly the Canucks scored the first goal in 4 or 5 of those games last year in the playoffs, and the Hawks still pulled out the series, and as far as this season, the only game that i saw the Canucks clearly outplay the hawks was the 5-1 game, and even in that game the Canucks were outshot big time,so they weren’t even outplayed by that much….don’t know if i fear anyone just yet,i guess it all depends on how the Hawks end the season….during last season the Hawks slumped for a bit there, but the last like 10-11 games they found their touch, and it carried them all the way to the WCF,hopefully the same will happen this season and we’ll see them hoisting up the CUP!!!!!

it an 8 and a 6 with a 2 week Olympic break in the middle

so it isn’t really “a 14 game road trip” – but it suck rather badly, and doesn’t figure to help them in any sort of push to better themselves in the conference standings (not that I would want them to).

I love how Nuckleheads are whining...

About their 14 game road trip. And although I do agree it sucks, it is in fact an 8 game road trip, followed by a 2 week vacation, followed by a 6 game road trip.

As we know, there will be a trap or 2 in there. I was shocked they fell behind Toronto, but not 2 shocked they came back.

The teams they are playing on the 8 game trip are weak. Except Ottawa. If they beat Ottawa, I’ll be impressed.

Hawks dominate, lose

This could be the headline for at least half a dozen games this year.

And it’s usually accompanied by explanations of goals that “couldn’t be helped.” Weird, when you look at any individual goal, you gotta agree. But when this happens with mind-numbing regularity you gotta wonder if the Hawks are cursed or if maybe something else is going on.

Last night, the Hawks had a bazillion opporuntiites (Hossa all night, Kane with a full second alone in front, Toews wrap-around, Brouwer point-blank redirect into open net.) If they had scored on these opporutnities, you couldn’t blame Ward. But he made SEVERAL great saves in important situations and was the difference last night.

How nice it would be, just once in a while, to be able to say that about a Hawks goalie. I’ll take the lousy games- they happen. But the Hawks have had only one great game in net this year (Niemi in Vancouver.)

Anyway, I think Huey’s pretty much a known quantity at this point- let’s give the kid a chance to see if he can do better.

Agreed on this

I think it is safe to say that the way to describe this Hawks team is

1. They generate a ton of shots on offense.
2. They generally generage a ton of great offensive chances with those shots.
3. They do this because they are great at keeping possession of the puck.
4. And when they don’t they have a solid blueline corps to keep opponents’ offensive chances to a minimum.
5. If the team does have a sub-par game defensively, don’t look to your goaltenders to bail them out.

I’d venture to guess that nearly every SC winner had a weakness here or there – I’d like to believe nobody is perfect. Has any team won every playoff game on their way to winning the SC? If not, then there are weaknesses. The Hawks’ weakness is their goaltending – not ragging on the guys, it’s just their weakest link. But I HATE it when people come out and immediately pin the blame on the goaltending when the Hawks lose, as I have seen on other blogs. I’ll read posts of “Hawks didn’t play well, but Huet sucked and if Niemi would have won the game had he been in there, blah, blah, blah…”

Tonight was a team loss. There have been other nights where Huet sucked, and it cost them. This was not one of those nights.

*Ding*

We have a winner! Very well put. Sometimes Huet sucks, but more often it’s a failure of the entire team together that leads to a loss.

let’s give the kid a chance to see if he can do better.

. The problem is, he is not a kid. he is in his mid 30s and he is not going to get any better. He has shown who he is…he is not a 26 year old developing skills. he is an NHL veteran who is only going to decline, not get better. We will have to win in spite of him.

On A Happier Note

Last night’s effort was oustanding- extraordinary for the eighth game of a road trip. The boys deserved better, but regardless, it says a lot about the character of this team.

Sharp in particular was on fire all night. Maybe he and Hossa can work together.

Several crunching hits from Buff (maybe he can be a 3rd liner) and Seebs. Keith musta hit four perfect head man passes that led to great opportunities that led to nothing.

Frustrating night, but I fucking love this team!

Maybe I'm not critical enough

of the goaltending, but redirects aren’t on my list of “soft” goals. As a few others have mentioned, I was far more upset by Q’s decision to play Huet in the first place than anything else, and won’t list the reasons why since those have been mentioned too.

It only took 50+ games, but I’ve finally figured out why this team is so intriguing, and why I love rooting for them. They’re extraordinarily talented, capable of winning in so many ways, get contributions from everyone, and genuinely appear to be having fun when they play. But the thing I like most is watching them figure this winning thing out as the season progresses. We can all make a huge list of ultra-talented teams in every sport that never won anything, and we’re all hoping this team doesn’t join them on that list. At this point, I think it’s fair to say that no one in the league has a better chance of finishing on top. That’s more than good enough for me. Welcome home, boys.

I'm not saying this year...

But Niemi is faaast…

And word has it, great work ethic. At 26 years old, he is not a kid. I also think Stephan Waite is doing a great job with our Goalies.

I didn’t realize the Leafs were on a push to make the playoffs or is Burke trying to save his own ass? In any event, adding Phaneuf and Giguere is a definite upgrade for Toronto.
Can lightning strike twice for Toronto like it did back in 1992?

Milbury says we have the best top line in the West, putting us ahead of San Jose and Vancouver, at third and second respectively. Then McGuire tries to jump in, saying Brouwer’s one of the most underrated forwards in the league… in essence, stealing all of Sam’s lines from the start of the season. Anyone else catch that?

by ITypedforMiles on Jan 31, 2010 1:23 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think McGuire

is smart enough to steal anything. He must of hired someone to research his stuff.

Well

The trading of Jiggy should quiet any shouts for a “veteran goaltender with Cup experience,” as he was the only one available.

by illinikc33 on Jan 31, 2010 1:04 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

It would be nice when people get out their “Huet mallets”, if they could kindly suggest what alternatives are available now, which now appears to be none. (I sure don’t see one)

Trading a few players we’re going to lose anyway for a clear upgrade in Goal makes sense, for a solid Dman makes sense. The Kovi thing? Let Boston worry about that.

Eating Huets contract in the off season to keep more players? Makes sense (but who is going to replace those starts?)

I’ve been preaching this all year. Put down the microscopes people. Every team in the NHL, save for maybe 3 or 4 (SJ, Wash, Pitt, Nucks?), would instantly switch teams with us w/o even the slightest consideration.

The Month of January

The ‘Hawks came in like a lion, leaving a trail of destruction in their path, and went out like a lamb, playing some of their worst defensive efforts this season. All in all, a 10-4-1 record for a month that had an 8-game road trip at the end of it (10 in total for the month). There are some things I’m unhappy with but just looking at the record it’s hard to be too critical.

February’s schedule looks pretty good so hopefully the ’Hawks are licking their chops instead of their wounds.

Joel Quenneville’s best move: Sticking with Cristobal Huet as the starting goaltender for the last three games of the trip. The veteran played well enough to quiet most of the critics calling for Antti Niemi to get the bulk of starts.
