Halfway Home: Hawks Mid-Season Report Card
We're a little late on this, but the Hawks have had so many games and we're not exactly the hardest workers around here. Anyway, the victory over St. Louis marked the 41st game of the year, and it's probably time to see how everyone did for the first half of the year. We'll be doing this the whole week, so we'll take it in sections. Right, off to it then!
The Goalies:
Somehow, I feel whatever I put down here is going to cause a riot in the comments. Anyway, it's been a balls-in-our-throat ride for the followers of this Frenchman. His start to the year had people throwing themselves off the 300 Level, screaming incoherently, and the three writers here seriously question why we even bother. Hawks fans were out for blood after Game #1 in Finland. It didn't get much better the next few, with some real horror shows against Calgary and Dallas. We stopped eating, we were afraid to read the blog and other ones.
Then a strange thing happened. The season continued. The Hawks defensive coverage got even better. Huet got more and more reps. And since? He's been just this side of wonderful. He's 4th in GAA. He has three shutouts. He's made the big saves when required, which is all he has to do. 17 of his 31 starts have resulted in two goals or less for the opposition. That's over half. Over half the time he gives the Hawks an excellent chance to win, because this team can pretty much fart two goals a night. So while he'll still throw in the occasional clunker, and we doubt Hawks fans will ever be totally comfortable with him until he wins the Cup (and maybe not even then), we have to give him no less than a B. We'll go with B+.
Ah, Chicago fans favorite, the backup. "I luv dis Orkman cuz he doesn't play! We need to play Khalil Bell more, daaap." (By the way, since he biffed a 6-0 team out of the playoffs and threw three INT's at home against the Chiefs in a game they had to have, can well admit that Ortman sucks? Please? Any chance?) I still hear people who want Niemi to be anointed the starter, and some of them aren't named Barry Rozner. Look, I love what Niemi has done. He's been a more than capable #2, and allowed Huet to not be overburdened with starts. He does have four shutouts. But let's be frank here, he's been bad in just as many. He was woefully caught out in the first Vancouver game. He gave away at least two goals against Boston. He was in net when that last Nashville game got way closer than it should have been. And two of his shutouts came when he faced less than 20 shots.
Still, he's been everything we could reasonably ask for. But that doesn't include him being between the pipes when Game 1 in April rolls around. He's perfect for this role he has right now. Be satisfied with that. We'll go with B+ for him too.
I'll be back later with some of the D-Men.

You picked goalies first?
You must be a masochist to do this with some of the comments that will end up on here. Although, it’s worth pointing out that this goalie tandem is first in the NHL in Goals Against. By the way, on a completely unrelated topic, if you mention that the power play is clown shoes in this midseason recap, they are ninth in the standings in PP%.
Clown shoes power play
They can still be called clown shoes, because they’ve been just so frustratingly inconsistent. One night they score four PP goals, the next they put up a goose egg in six tries. Some nights they have less shots on goal on the PP than the number of PPs. It’s been crazy inconsistent, and yet we’re in the top ten in the league.
That said, as of late, they have looked much better and more organized and consistent. If this keeps up, then we can change it to say “making other teams look like fucking clown shoes.”

Goalies
I agree with this post. Both goalies have been outstanding, but no goalie is immune to laying a massive shit every once in awhile. As long as they are keeping us in the game more often than not, that’s all that matters. Our defense certainly helps with the awesome stats and nice crooked number of shutouts we have this year.

Ah, the backup
Reminds me when I used to attend the games back in the mid-80s. There was an old fossil my friend and I would occasionally run into waiting for the el (we called him The Old Dude). The Old Dude apparently didn’t care for Murray Bannerman and wished they would play Warren Skorodenski (yep, out of the frying pan and into the fire). After one particularly lackluster performance, he looked at us and said, “They oughta play that Pollack.”
Agree with your assessments. Outside of the occasional bed-shitting, these gents are living up to expectations. In keeping with life in the corporate world, I give them both a “meets expectations” rating.

This is why I read this blog!
The hockey intelligence of the trio of alchoholics authors who write this blog is so refreshingly brilliant! Excellent assessment of our goalies.
I would even be tempted to give Huet an A-, mostly because he’s been very good in the “big” games. I recall saying at the beginning of the season to give Huet 10 games to decide if he’s good or not. I think he’s done great. Niemi still looks shaky to me more than I’d like—lots of big rebounds when he’s not on his game—but he’s doing exactly what a backup should do. I think that putting him in for more games than a typical backup gets would bring his numbers down to earth. He’s still basically a rookie.
Brodeur gave up a lot of goals against the Hawks. So did Luongo last year in the playoffs. Pittsburgh’s goalie gave up 5 in one game of the finals last year. Yet they’re all considered great goalies, and all on Canada’s Olympic team. Huet definitely poops one out there on occasion, but it’s ridiculous to dump on him for it. Goaltending is NOT problem for this team.
Just out of curiousity...
is there a team out there who isn’t worrying about how their goalie will do in the playoffs? (Minus St. Louis, cause they suck ass and won’t be participating in post-season play)
Everytime i hear someone say “Huet is doing okay now but how will he be in playoffs?” I hear “I know spring begins on March 20th, but will the groundhog see his shadow?” I don’t know, damn it. That’s why they play the freaking games.
so anyway how bout those D men…we should pick up Cheli

No shit storms please.... and off topic
I’m a Wolves STH and have seen quite a bit of Cheli. His play has been nothing but surprising. I thought he’d just go out and kill penalties take a few shifts and that’s it. He has been really helpful in mentoring the young Wolves D-men. He’s almost like a player coach out there. And personally I think he deserves a letter on his jersey. He moves the puck and contributes in the offensive zone on a regular basis (I really didn’t think I’d see this at all.) In 26 games he has 4 G 13 A and is a +16. It has been a real treat to see him play live again….and school 23 year olds at 47. He has been really good.
(On a side note I loved seeing him when he was paired with Steve McCarthy mostly cause the Hawks picked him with the pick they got from Detroit. Where Cheli is just trying to hang onto the game at 47 McCarthy is probably a career minor leaguer. Great trade boys… great trade…. Please no shit storms on this please)
That being said who knows what all this means to an NHL roster? The skill sets between the AHL and NHL are so vast. He defiantly has the smarts and vision still, but I am not so sure about the foot speed to play at that level anymore.
He has turned down 2 offers, I know of, mostly because he wouldn’t be a top 6 D man with regular playing time. Any NHL team can sign him and it’s telling no one has and those people are paid to make those decisions, I’m just a teacher with a gambling problem.
I don’t think he’ll leave to become what Jordan Hendry has been, even for the Hawks, He wants to play regular minutes. If the Hawks trade Barker I think Hendry would fit in fine…… but would Cheli be better than Hendry? Maybe? If the hawks don’t move a D man, I don’t see him fitting into the top 6. I can’t see a way bring him in and still have a healthily Sopel on the roster. So unless there is a move (and I’ll evaluate them when they happen) or a serious injury or two in the D core (I’ll be bashing my face with an asp) I don’t see it happening.
I don’t know what all this rambling means, but this is how I see it.
If it means
that you want to see Cheli get a chance with the Hawks, i would say hell no. I watched his final NHL shifts last year in the playoffs and he was so slow and inadequate it hurt to watch. He is no longer able to play at the NHL level, especially on a championship caliber team. He should enjoy the fact that he has a place to play at age 47 in his hometown and leave it at that.
You are talking about right after a 40+ year old man broke his leg, and rehabed in time to play in the NHL. Would he be slower than Hossa and Kane? Fuck yes. Could he make a measureable contribution to the team? God only knows, but I doubt the Hawks will find out.

Wrong
Auntie Em has been better. Give Huey a flat B or B-.
When the Hakws score 3+, they are 25-2-2. They could have achieved this mark with about anyone in net. The 2 losses were Huey’s debacles against the Stars.
When the Hawks score <3, they are 4-8-2. Included here are Niemi’s victories in Vancourver and Pittsburgh, probably the only games all year when you could say “the goalie won the game.” (Huey got wins over Nashville and the Rangers in games the Hawks scored two but dominated.)
When a guy pops up on the NHL leader board with the lowest GAA in the league and #5 SV%, you gotta throw him a bone.
You know what this site needs? Yoga.
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
My problem with Huet...
Huet’s numbers stand up well, but he’s way too inconsistent. He could have an incredible performance one day, maybe even a shutout, and then perform the way he has each time against Dallas and Calgary.
I still don’t feel safe with him in front of the net. Only because I don’t know what to expect! I will agree that he’s roughly in a “B/B-” range, but it’s a crapshoot with him. I will also admit he’s better than I’d have expected going into the season but I’m just not convinced quite yet.
Niemi on the other hand has been a real surprise. Here comes a guy out of nowhere, who would’ve expected him to be as solid as he is? Unlike Huet, I usually feel comfortable with him in front of the net, and it generally seems to me like the team feels more comfortable playing backed by Niemi. I think he adds a nice spark, inexperienced as he may be.
I’ve been on the Niemi bandwagon since his shutout against Florida. Not saying he needs to start everyday, and maybe it’s my personal bias against Huet talking, but I’m happy to see Niemi seeing more time as the season progresses.
Niemi has been subject to a few scary brain farts too.
And I think with a rookie like him, the downside of the intermitancy of the workload is counterbalanced by the upside of not having the pressure of being the #1 guy.
Excellent point.
A point I won’t disagree with. Maybe Niemi’s brain farts are less suspect because they don’t happen as often, which could be because he doesn’t get as much playing time. I don’t know. You do have a point.
Like I said, I’m not clamoring like some for him to get the regular starting job over Huet. Maybe give him a little more playing time as the season moves along to maybe make him feel comfortable going into the playoffs as a backup, and to be called into the game if the team ever needs him to.
I still think he’s too inexperienced to be the #1 guy, but maybe down the line we can season him into being someone’s #1, maybe even our own when the Huet contracts runs out. Who knows, he’s got a lot of upside and potential, but it’s a crazy game they play.
Luongo, Brodeur, Nabakov, Dryden, etc
ALL have lost in the playoffs. All goaltenders (I said tenders) will lose in the playoffs.
It takes a lot more than a goalie to win the Stanley cup or NJ would win every year, not 3 times in 20 years.
Huet gets the job done.
Niemi gets the job done.
Move on!
And stop talkng about Kovi. Not needed.

The truth is
that Huet and Niemi may play the same position but they have different jobs and Niemi has been a little better at filling his than Huet. But for practical reasons you can’t write that on this site or people go crazy with unreadable nonsense about replacing Huet. Giving Niemi Huet’s job and vice versa doesn’t automatically mean the outcome is better, but that doesn’t stop people from assuming so.
But at the same time it does seem to be a disservice not to be able to acknowlege how outstanding Niemi has been at filling his role. Not only are his numbers impressive but he’s done it in limited work where it is very difficult to stay consistent.
And as for how Huet will fare in the playoffs, I can safely say he won’t cry like Luongo so you’ve heard it here first – Cristobal Huet is a better playoff goalie than Roberto Luongo, the crybaby.
Fucking alcohol, it screws with everything!

Although for some strange reason I still feel bad for Corey Crawford, (whose birthday is this month! Thanks home opener calendar…)
I think we all should be more than happy with our goaltending this year. We don’t have an all-star or game changing goalie, yet we lead the league in GAA. I remember right when we got Huet and everyone started belly-aching, I remembered a stat, where when he was acquired by the Crapitals midseason he put up a below 2 GAA in the stretch run.
I also laugh when I listen to the Score and people still think we’d be better off with Khabibulin and his 3.03 GAA.

I also agree with the grades
neither goalie is the savior or downfall of this team right now. I’m mostly impressed and sometimes disappointed in both. I’m annoyed at fans of other teams who act like the Hawks are doomed because of Huet. I give Niemi extra points because he has the same birthday (8/29) as me—well, okay, can’t grade him on that but I think it’s nice.

Then why do you care
who is in net? If stellar defense dictates goals against, rather than a good goaltender, what is the difference whether we have Huet, Niemi, Crawford, or my 12 year old cousin who plays goalie in the net? Why bother complaining if the outcome depends on the defense rather than the goalie?
Furthermore, why do NHL GM’s even bother to go after goaltenders instead of top-flight defensemen? Why would Vancouver pay Luongo rather than go after a #1 and a #2 D instead?
We make average goalies look great

In other words, not really
I just got caught up
But you should never
Ever, go out of your way
To not compliment
Especially when
The Haiku showered with praise
Is jacked up, ya douche
:)
Impressive
is the Hawks +47 goal differential. Leads the NHL by a long shot and averages more than 1 goal per game. That is awesome.
What does it take to get an A around here?
Niemi and Hong Kong Huet have been pretty stellar this year. You’d have to get historic to have two goalies do as well as they have, like when Manny the Uncanny and Timothy Tom rocked it in Boston a couple of years back. Oh, and about the comments, I like these comments like I like nipples and bellybuttons:
dialed down the center.

Please don't confuse my Post Title with the Question: "What does it take to get some A around here?"
I already got that figured out.

Goaltender Coach
I’d say the Hawks goalie coach gets some props and probably an “A” grade. Huet played last season and started this one more like a swimmer than a goalie. How many times did I see him trying to make a save doing the breast stroke(calm down kiddies) or backstroke? Not to mention it was nice telling him to stand next to the frigging post instead of 6 inches away. Seems with some positioning coaching and apparently good talent and reflexes, he looks good. Hopefully he’ll ace the final and get an “A” at the end of the 2nd semester.

You are right
I participated. I feel shame.
It is a geed write up, and I agree with the grades. I’m looking forward to the forward grades.
In the future I will try to engage in less shenanigans.

I have no idea why everything is centered like this but I’m trying to figure it out..

My first Blackhawks game
It was me and my uncle
We sat on the glass
I think I was 8
This was the Old Stadium
It was crazy loud
The funniest thing
We took another person
A Little Rascal
He was an adult
On the show, he was a kid
Did you ever watch?
Anyway, Hawks won
I became an instant fan
Today, I bleed red
don't mind me, I'm just a smart-ass
of course you’d bleed red
you are human, are you not?
Hey, I bleed red too.

I'd say A-
Good thing France didn’t qualify for the olymipcs this year. This way Huey gets a rest. On the other hand, he certainly deserves to represent his country on such an important stage, but all in all, I’d say it’s good for us.
With this Offense and Defense
I will gladly take a goalie(s) that is/are playing at a B+ level.
