Blackhawks Mid-Season Review Continued: The Forwards
I bet you thought Sam would be writing all of these, didn't you? Well that was probably very smart of you since McClure and I now have jobs that make it difficult to write as much as we'd like for this site. Anyways, sorry to ruin your prediction, but I'm going to take a shot at looking at all of the forwards. These guys are going to be in no particular order and hopefully I don't forget anyone.
Lets get going
Before the season began, all three of us picked a player we thought would break out this year - Sam wisely picked Brouwer and he hasn't shied away from pointing that out on a few occasions when we're all drinking and watching the game. Rightfully so, Brouwer has done just about everything we could hope this year. He's one of the many Hawks with double digits in goals, isn't afraid of the physical game and has recently done a great job of getting in front of goalies with Buff still inexplicably on the point during the power play. Brouwer has lately been playing on a line with Daydream Nation and doesn't look out of place (or at least as long as you don't expect him to bury a wide open chance). He's already eclipsed his career high in goals and there's plenty of time left in the season. Final Verdict: A-
Oh Byfuglien - you once again got us into having such high hopes for you. And dammit if you haven't mostly let us down, and yet at the same time you're racking up a respectable point total. Only Buff could lead the team in hits, be one of seven Hawks with 10+ goals, do respectable things like this or this... and still somehow seem like a disappointment. Buff started out fairly strong this season, did his predictable disappearing act but still can instantly become a factor in any game he chooses. His ability to turn his "give a damn" switch on or off will always infuriate most of us - but no one can argue that when he's insanely valuable to the team when he's "on". He's played well lately so lets hope being left off Team USA served as the wake up call he needs (just like we thought playing with Samuel Pahlsson was... or John Madden now). It's hard to rate him high but he's overall been a pretty positive force on the team so far, so... Final Verdict: B-
With only 26 games played, it's hard to really judge how much of an impact Eager has had on this team. You don't really miss him on the many occasions his brain is scrambled but when he's skating hard and on his game, it shows. While the top lines will get all the attention, the Hawks ability to roll out 4 lines that play their role perfectly cannot be overlooked. Eager is a big part of that. He'll skate hard, take stupid penalties sometimes (ok... often) and now it seems like he'll actually win a fight more often than not, until his next inevitable concussion that is. Final Verdict: B
Yeah - we're just going to have to call this one incomplete. It was obvious early on that Bolland was hurting bad and he finally did the right thing and went under the knife. Lets just hope Bolland is back in time to get up to speed before the playoffs.. Final Verdict: Get Well Soon
There isn't a ton to say about Fraser - and that's OK as you really shouldn't have to write a novel about your fourth line center. Along with Eager and Kopecky, he's part of a fourth line that's finally showing a lot of life and making life that much harder for other teams. You have to respect a man that's going to lead a team in fights even though I don't think he's won a single one. Fraser is winning close to 50% of his faceoffs though and a good reason the Hawks are one of the best teams at the dot. Final Verdict: B-
I was still pissed off at Versteeg at the start of the season. His antics in Game 4 of last year forced me to take away his exclamation point - but I think he's done more than enough to earn it back. He'll still refuse to dump the puck in and is prone to playing far too cute but he skates hard, plays like he's got a much larger frame and can dangle with the best of this team. He's being misused on a line with Madden and Buff but makes the most of his chances when he gets them. He's 10 goals away from a career high, has a solid +/- and a positive behind the net rating. Final Verdict: A-
Poor Kopecky. He's always going to be forever associated as being nothing more than a security Slovak for Hossa and would be this season's whipping boy if it weren't for Cam Barker. People think so little of him that SBN hasn't even bothered to update his profile picture despite being halfway done with a new season. And to be honest, he's deserved it. The only time you noticed him on the ice for most of the season, you immediately questioned why the hell the Blackhawks ever signed him. Well, with the fourth line clicking, Kopecky's going on a bit of a tear (or at least a tear for his standards), he's netted 3 goals in 4 games. Some of it is just being in the right place at the right time... but at least he's in the right place, right? Right. Final Verdict: C (might be a bit high but his play seems to be improving)

It’s all relative – they’re being graded on their roles and their skills. Also, this is a really fucking good team, so we’re giving a lot of high grades.

True, I love the fact that any of the players that are considered the “worst” of the team would be rated quite high on another team.
There are bloggers over at Lighthouse Hockey that wish desperately to get Sopel back! Since Sopel seems to be blocking more shots than the goalies right now, I wouldn’t want to trade him, but that doesn’t mean that I will stop whining about him once a game or so.

Really good without a doubt
It is cool watching the ‘Hawks on the road throw out their 4th line and 3rd pairing and STILL see the fans squirming in their seats fearing their goalie is going to be made to look like a little school girl, not to mention the fact I’m pretty sure they shit themselves whenever “Better” "Hawks players gain the puck and look like they are “thinking” about going up ice, even behind their own goal!
It is almost too fun to watch this team, well no not really too much, just really fucking fun!

yeah, they were totally invisible last night
Toews, Hossa, Kane, Sharp = 1pt
Fraser = 2pts
Eager = 2pts
The answer to who Stan trades away now should be obvious!

in case it wasn't clear, that's

Man, you guys should rename the site "Four Feathers, Three Bitter Alcoholics"
I don’t know what the best team in the 1st half has to do to get some love. Buff & Fras B-? Kopecky a C? Yeeesh, I’d bump all those guys up at least 2 grades for how they fill their roles. I know we all want buff to be joe thorton/hanson brother reincarnate (if they were dead, i think you need to be dead to be reincarnated) but a lot of these guys are the reason why our play is so consistent and why Q can roll 4 lines. Even brouwer at A- seems low. I don’t know what else you want him to do to earn an A, I can’t really see a deficiency in his game right now for what he’s asked to do.
by SLoop on Jan 8, 2010 9:50 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Not everyone in the class get's an A.
Giving, say……Kopecky and Dunc the same grade would be an extreme disservice to the latter. Know what I mean?
by timmetz on Jan 8, 2010 10:10 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
you judge players by how they assume their role within the team. So you ask “How well is kopecky doing what is asked of him?” And i think its tough to say he is giving anything less than an above average performance as a 4th line winger
by SLoop on Jan 8, 2010 11:34 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
In the last 3 games maybe
I have to agree with all the grades, although I hate admitting Kopecky deserves a C. But I’ll let that go for now since C is subpar on this team.
If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

Kopecky more than a C? That would be a textbook example of grade inflation.
Some evenings I’ve wondered if he still has a pulse.
Athough he has, of late, been almost up to competent as a 4th line role player.

Because 3 good quizzes does not a solid semester make, when there are 41. If he keeps up the effort of late his grade should come up some, but when he gets a couple of healthy scratches while Hendry plays, Average is about right.

B- for Fraser? That seems low. He’s been great on the PK and its not like we really need him to score much (although its nice his line is scoring now). I would give him a B+

Steeg and Brouwer
Loved the write ups on these two. My man crush on Versteeg seems to have always exceeded his actual value and I definitely got some weird comments at the start of last year wearing his sweater around the UC. Hope in some way Stan can work magic to keep him around, even if Sharpie needs to go bye bye.
Brouwer has just been flat out awesome. He is such a nice compliment playing with Toews/Kane and make it a strong offensive/defensive line. I agree with the above poster saying he deserves an A. I can’t imagine him contributing any more to this team that he does.

I agree with all of the rankings, except Buff. He is a C. I know that he can turn the game around, but only if he makes it to the game. I can not give someone higher than a C until he tries every night. It seriously annoys me to see Kopecky trying harder than Buff some nights.

Trade values for some of our players like Buff and Barker have never been higher than now. I f you wait until the deadline you run the risk of it turning into a buyers market.

You like to re-iterate the same point over and over again, don’t you? Who in their right mind would trade with the ‘Hawks right now unless they were backed into a corner? Every GM knows that if they wait they could make a deal with a much lesser consequence.
It’s all about bargaining leverage and the ’Hawks have none at this moment.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

If a GM is interested in a particular player, then he knows he has to get him first
It doesn’t do the GM any good for the guy he wants to go ‘fire sale’ cheap if the guy goes to a different team. There ought to be more than one team interested in a Barker, Buf or Versteeg (for some examples) that the interested GMs have to balance the desire to wait for the fire sale against the desire that the targeted player goes to the GM’s team instead of elsewhere.
