Hawks Do Some Roster Manscaping
As promised, I said I'd let you know when the axe fell and on whom, and here you have it. A couple of mild surprises here in Kyle Beach and Igor Makarov, as the former had (likely outsized) hopes of making the roster, but made the staff's decision a relatively easy one with his pooch-screwing last night. The latter, Makarov, started out camp impressing in intra-squad games, but failed to be noticed against other teams, and along side many linemates who were regulars. The rest that were sent down were Brian Connolly, Brandon Pirri, and Ben Smith, all in unsurprising fashion.
The bigger news is who remains, namely Nick Leddy and Jeremy Morin . Leddy is still quite raw and leaves a lot to be desired in his own zone, but has shown quite a bit of offensive upside. It's Morin, however that's been turning heads, and he'll get another opportunity to do so tonight, skating with Patricks Kane and Sharp. What was initially thought of as a total longshot to make the team, with another strong showing and with Jack Skille being dinged up, Morin might be able to seal his spot with another solid outing. While he could just as easily be sent back down to the minors/junior should he underperform when the games count, if he makes this team it's still a feat in and of itself, and he appears to have a very bright future ahead of him. Viktor Stalberg's absence on the travel itinerary to Rockford should also be noted after his relatively impressive performance last night. While it seems he'd have to go out of his way to not make the squad, another showing such as that could go a long way in keeping him seated with the adults as well.

Leddy staying up with the big boys
probably says more about Hendry’s lack of improvement and Boynton being Boynton than it does Leddy’s performance. Thank god Scott has been better than expected – so far.

Do you think they were expecting
Hendry to improve that much? I mean, he’s 26 and been with the Hawks for a few years, I was thinking they pretty much knew what they had with him. I’ve felt Leddy staying up this long was more a result of him being the young Dman they want to see the most, and who has deserved the look the most, while resting guys like Keith and Seabs.

I don't think Hendry has been that bad so far though
nothing impressive, but nothing horrible.
also: where did we get Morin again? was he in the Steeger trade?
Correct
The Hawks acquired Morin from Thrash Unreal in the Buff/Eager/Sopel trade.

I do
I’m really pulling for the kid. I get excited thinking about a Morin-Toews-Kane line developing together and becoming the dominate force in the NHL for a decade.

Is that possible?
I’m not sure if asking this question reveals more of my ignorance in regards to Morin’s skill set or in the proper creation of a good hockey line.
I assume from what little I know about Morin that this line would be a little bit like a Toews-Kane-Sharp line in that it would be about skill and speed. However, is that a recipe for optimal success? Does that line need a bigger body, power forward type to draw physical players away from Kane and allow Tazer to let his skill shine instead of being parked in the slot?
The idea of a young, uber-talented line that could actually effectively play together for a full decade is almost too good to be true. It seems like there has to be something that would make it a deal breaker, other than the obvious too soon projection of Morin’s future potential. What am I missing? Or am I just being too pessimistic?

It all depends on what you want Toews to do on that line
As we often talk about Q constructs his scoring lines with a puck-winner/playmaker/finisher template.
If you put Morin on that line, given his billed skill set, he’d likely be the “finisher”, which would make Toews the puck winner. As presently constructed with Bickell/Brouwer/Skille whoever on that wing, Toews is the finisher. It’s just a matter of what you want Toews to do, because he can do it all. Having him not have to be the first man in on the forecheck as frequently as he is now, makes it easier for him to get back when the puck goes the other way. With Morin on his wing with Kane, hypothetically, then Kane and Morin would have to be more defensively aware, because Toews will be below the goal line even more frequently than he already is.

Thanks McClure...good thoughts
I let myself fell victim to one of my big sports pet peeves, looking at only one side (offensive) of the ice/court/field/diamond. I forgot to focus on the defensive side as well. Stupid me.
I think I’d rather have Toews be the finisher so that he can get back defensively. I’m not sure if that is more due to the value I place on his talent as a defensive forward, or due to the concern I have for Kane getting back and then playing effective defense.

I don't think he's been bad either.
I just would be surprised if there was an expectation by the Hawks for significant improvement.
they may just want a little more look at Leddy
I dont’ think he’s ready for primetime – and he will be much better off long term by getting major minutes in the AHL for a while than riding the bench in the NHL
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
my thought too
D-men take longer than forwards to develope and there is no way Leddy gets enough ice time up here.
About the time Campbell’s contract is done (or moved) he could be ready for that role.
Not all those who wander are lost.
my Captain is better than your Captain
IMO he hasn't shown much improvement over the past few years
He still gets easily undressed and easily rattled against a strong forecheck.
Sopel may not have been great, but he had decent hockey IQ and positioning. I don’t think that’s true of either Boynton or Scott and Hendry needs to handle more of the ice this year. Leddy’s definitely not the solution either, but it appears to me that Q is grasping at straws here. We really don’t have anyone to fill that role who’s ready in the system yet.

well
43 games last year, 9 the year before, 40 the year before that.
seems to me his minutes in 07-08 were much lower than the second half of last year.
so, add it all up, and it’s about 1 season on 3rd pairing, with a sprinkling of forward.
I think it’s fair to expect some improvement this year.

I’m confused. I thought you were implying that Leddy could take Hendry’s spot, which I don’t think can be done this year. Hendry will never be what Leddy will most likely be, but I think he’s a much better choice than Leddy this year. I think he can improve, too, just not all that much.
And of course I won’t wear his jersey BigC – I’m not stupid (plus I seem to be bad luck for players without long-term contracts, thus the new Hossa jersey).

Nope
Leddy’s definitely not the solution
I really hope that we don’t see Leddy for a couple more years.
Just concerned that Hendry will have his hands full this year because his d partners will likely be worse than Sopel. If he doesn’t step up his game, the 3rd line could be a circus act and there is no one in Rockford who is ready to step up, capable, or not on AARP.
Hendry definitely has the speed and physical ability to cover more ice if need be, but he hasn’t shown the awareness IMO.

I am waiting to see who the real Boynton is.
The so/so defenseman we saw when he first got here or the defenseman who played out his ass during the last three games of the finals.
probably somewhere in the middle.
He’s a better skater than Sopel at least. I don’t mind Boynton on our third pair.
Am I crazy for thinking that Leddy's future is entertwined with Soupy's?
First, my assumptions:
-You can use one fast skating, not necessarily physically imposing, puck advancing, attacking defenseman per top two pairing.
-Your third line pairing will be used for spot duty, enforcing, and special teams play, which means said type of defenseman isn’t needed here.
-Duncan Keith isn’t going anywhere
-Leddy projects to be the type of defeseman in question.
Given those assumptions, it would seem to me that Leddy’s advancement is somewhat blocked until Soupy’s huge contract (and thus, Soupy himself) is eventually traded. Conversely, the Blackhawks would be more willing to trade Soupy’s huge contract (and thus, Soupy himself) once they feel Leddy is ready to slide in and take his spot. Obviously, this is all over a multi-year time frame.
What am I missing here? Am I just crazy?

someone taking Campbell's cap hit
is a bit crazy. Not impossible though. Alot depends on the next CBA
Not all those who wander are lost.
my Captain is better than your Captain
But it becomes a little less crazy after every season
As the number of years remaining on his contract decreases, the possibility of someone being willing to take on the remainder of said contract increases.
6 years at $7m per (right now) is a bit different than 4 years at $7m per (two years down the line, when McClure speculated Leddy might be fully ready).
"There are idiots. Just look around."
by Sarcastic Mike on Oct 1, 2010 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions
it’s not so much the money as the % of cap room it takes up. His contract would be a good one for a team trying to reach the salary floor.
Of course those teams are not usually competetive. And Soupy’s contract has a NTC that allows him to name 8 teams he would be willing to go to. Would he really say “Sure, I’d love to go play for the Islanders?”
And who knows what the next CBA is going to look like. IMO letting Leddy spend the next couple of seasons in Rockford playing top 4 min and learning the game is the best thing for him and thus the team.
After the new CBA is signed then Stan can look at Leddy’s development and what he may want/can do with Soupy
Not all those who wander are lost.

Leddy is about Kaner size. If Leddy’s defensive skills continue to develop, he could more in the Keith mold.
More likely someone like Olsen would fill a role similar to Seabrook’s. He’s definitely a guy I hope the Hawks keep around for a while.

I hope not. I rather see the Hawks trade the Highly over-paid and over-rated Campbell.
Leddy has been compared to Housley. I would like to see the kid grow for a year or two to see if the prediction comparison is true
you're new, aren't you.
while I won’t argue about the over-paid (except the “highly” part), I wouldn’t call Soupy overrated. As would most of the people on this blog- especially after the Preds series.
Actually
I was mostly just summarizing the comments above mine since they had talked written themselves into a corner. If Soupy ain’t moving, Leddy ain’t staying.
Leddy and Connelly are the two prospects I hope we hang on to, but who knows what the future brings and what sprockets will be traded for cogs.
Tonight may have altered the future too. Who knows? (besides The Shadow)

Don't see anyone taking Soupy's contract
Plus the guy is very valuable (and overpaid) I don’t think Leddy ever gets to a level that will match Brian’s play.
Leddy is only 19
give him some time. I think he’s probably 2 seasons away from replacing Campbell.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
Hendry
(with apologies to the Mrs) is a great big meh.
He’s a mostly reliable 6th D-man, who has the benefit of knowing the system and being known by his teammates on the ice.
Our Cup.
I'd agree. And I like Hendry, there's something endearing about him.
But let’s face it, he gets out-skated on the backcheck and gets played like a two dollar banjo with one on one’s.
He did score one sexy goal against Luongo though…
the thing about Hendry that drives me crazy is the guy has some size (6’), but he plays like he’s 5’6".
I know this will not change your opinion in any way...
but most of the short bastards play like they are 6’9" and bullet proof. I had two nicknames in high school, Tiny Tuba, and Crazy Bastard. Must have been hilarious to see all 5’1" of me tackling a 6’5" striker.

here is some food for thought
Unless the Hawks decide to keep 14 forwards it would appear that one more forward and two defensemen still need to be trimmed to get to 22 for opening night in Denver.
FORWARDS STILL IN CAMP: Bickell, Bolland, Brouwer, Dowell, Hossa, Kane, Kopecky, Morin, Pisani, Potulny, Sharp, Skille, Stalberg and Toews.
DEFENSEMEN STILL IN CAMP: Boynton, Campbell, Cullimore, Hendry, Hjalmarsson, Keith, Leddy, Scott and Seabrook.
I
"Trying is the first step towards failure" Homer Simpson
I honestly think that
the real focus is on defensemen right now, Cullimore is a shoe in for Rockford, Leddy and Boynton could be interesting. I think Morin and stalberg are on the cusp for forwards.

But Dowell and Potulny are both centers
If both of them stay, wouldn’t that make 5 centers (Toews, Sharp, Bolland, Dowell, Potulny)? Doesn’t it make more sense to keep an extra winger around rather than a center?

But
I think regardless of how the roster looks on opening night, I think Sharp is pretty much guaranteed to play center. I haven’t heard about Potulny playing wing, but if that’s the case, then my concern goes away
by hawkswin!hawkswin! on Oct 1, 2010 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions
most centers can deal with playing wing
few wings handle center well.
a ways back, half of all forwards drafted were centers – and then lots played more wing from there on.
Confusion will be my epitaph.

really?
I think the opposite, that the question mark is at forward. My guess is Morin goes down.
As for D, I don’t think Leddy is making the team. he’s a pretty small guy for a Dman (basically Keith’s size when he was 19), he needs to fill out a bit more in my opinion. though could you imagine the sight of him paired with Scott?
this?

cap numbers
Leddy’s is over $1mil
Morin’s is just under
So either of them replacing a “cheap” guy will add another $300K-$600K per
And then there are the potential bonuses again
This being handcuffed by success is BS
Not all those who wander are lost.
my Captain is better than your Captain
We’re fine w/r/t cap. Even if both Leddy and Morin were playing instead of, say, any two guys who together pull in 1.2 million … we’d still be under by 200,000. Not ideal, but there’s wiggle room—not lots, but enough.

Final picks
I think the D choice is easier… Cullimore is unconditionally released (he’s 36 for pete’s sake), and Leddy is sent to play every game at Rockford until one of the top 4 need a injury replacement.
On O, it’s a toss up between Potulny and Dowell. Who is better in the face off circle? Who is better at PK?
At least Markarov has not drawn the attention to himself like KFB has
It is one thing to not make the cut, and another to not make the cut and draw attention, not for the right reasons.
I hope Beach grows allot with Rockford against much better competition than he has played against [less this preseason], and he grows to learn what is most important to the team, not his name or his reputation.

Not Huge
Only need to clear enough room to fit, the remainder of the Cap hit for that part of the season left, NOT the whole season. So a one month rental (reg season) would only be a hit of that time left.

I get that, but it works both ways
You also only get to drop the cap hit for the remainder of the year for the player(s) you trade away. So if you don’t have extra cap space, you need to trade basically equal salaries. Richard’s cap hit is $7.8M. We’d still get hit with about $2M of that.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Oct 1, 2010 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions
Say the Hawks are sitting with about ~$1M in room
After IR, I-90 Shuffles, etc…… come March. It makes it feasible to make that move than, though not now. To get a BR you are going to give up at least 2+ prospects, even if he is the final year, to get him for that month and Playoffs. But those 2+ may be enough to clear the space. Something along those lines is what I’m thinking

Yeah but most of our prospects are on two-ways
and therefore not taking up cap space if they’re in Rockford. Up on the Hawks (barring injury, etc) you have either large salaries or measly $500k ones, aside from Brouwer and Kop.
It’s a pipe dream IMO – unless McClure, the freaking instigator, wants to weigh in on how we can make this happen.

did anyone catch Keith's
Lemonhead commercial on the last break? Seabs thinks the Lemonhead logo talks to him?!
it's the same as last year
All the players’ Lemonhead radio ads were usually playing off the idea that they think the Lemonhead logo talks. At the end of the year, Sharpie’s Lemonhead ad was about how he hid a mic in there.
I love those ads; I wish they were available on the internet – I know they’re not, I’ve looked. :(
they are
Buff’s one mentioned how the “little guy” knew a lot about snowboarding or skateboarding, I think.
Seab’s was more like “SHHH….I’m waiting for the guy to speak” while the other person was all “o…kaaay…”
There’s always one or two during the WGN radio broadcast; I’ve been trying to catch them on my iPhone voice-memo app-thingy.

I think it might be just as likely
that we see Connelly or Vish in Campbell’s spot if necessary.
I’ve watched Connelly in Rockford and he was one of my favorite players for the Hogs last year. If only he had some size, you might hear more about him (He’s 5’10", 170 and looks like a beanpole). He’s a Campbell clone with the puck, plays on the PP, is good with his stick and his positioning on defensive, and he seems to really understand the game. He’s 24 so he’s got some experience, especially compared to Leddy. I must have missed all of his bad games, because he was fun to watch the times I saw him.
Vishnevskiy is 22 and has played a few NHL games each of the past two years, so he has some decent experience too. I just don’t think you throw Leddy into such a spotlight role so soon. He’d be destined to fail – no matter how well he played. He’s just not ready defensively.
Another possibility is that Hendry moves up to the 2nd line. Regardless of what happens, if Campbell is out, Keith is going to be building up the minutes again.

He went down in a heap – the refs called for the trainer right away which is never a good sign. Makes me kinda barfy thinking about it.

#NHLStarWars
The other night, the terrifically named Twitter user WhatNoJagr noted that one trending topic #NHLMatrix, would not be anywhere near as good as #NHLStarWars. And thus was born a hashtag in which people tried to cast the famous trilogies using NHL players.
Our man got the ball rolling: “Chris Chelios = The Emperor?”
Byronic pointed out, “Crosby’s gotta be Luke. Starts off whiny douche ends up winning it all.”
Passittobulis said, “Mikael Samuelsson is Han Solo, because he shoots first.”
Nettrashcan noted, “Hitchcock has gotta be the Death Star. ’That’s no moon…’”
Lukecourtright with one for the nerds, “Jacques Lemaire is Admiral Ackbar. Too obvious?”
Ashli28 added, "Vesa Toskala as Jar Jar Binks. “Mesa try and stop pucks. Mesa no catch them, but mesa try!”
And the obvious winner came when mqasim13 asked, “What are the Winnipeg Jets?” Answered CForrest, “Alderaan.”
You all get pizza rolls.

Replayed the clip of Scott shoving down Talbot to the ice with one hand….about a dozen times. Not even joking. I love John Scott. I hope that’s a sign of things to come from him.
CHICAGO — Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell will be re-evaluated Saturday after leaving Friday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins with an apparent right leg injury.
Campbell left the game early in the second period after colliding with Penguins forward Eric Tangradi inside the Pittsburgh zone.
“It was a shoulder to shoulder hit,” Tangradi said after the game. “I think his skate may have gotten caught.”
Campbell lay on the ground for several moments until the Blackhawks’ training camp staff could assist him off the ice.
Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville indicated the team has nine defensemen on the roster right now as it prepares for opening night Thursday.
He singled out rookie Nick Leddy as someone who could fill a spot if Campbell misses any time.
Campbell missed the final 14 games of the regular season last year plus part of the playoffs after breaking his clavicle and ribs after taking a hit from Capitals star Alex Ovechkin. He had 38 points during the 2009-10 season.

You're a lot more optimistic than I am.
I was already preparing for him to be lost for the season (which, given that his $7+ million would have been off the cap with him on long-term IR, would have made all of the roster purge over the summer that much more painful).
I don't think it's good, and i wish it was only a bruise

"Knee sprain" can mean anything from...
A slight stretching (which would heal in about 2 weeks), a partial tear or a complete rupture — of any ligament (MCL, LCL, PCL and the worst case ACL). Luckily, it seems from what Q has said and the way in which Campbell was hit (ACL should be ruled out and MCL is the most likely).
The 4-6 week time frame is pretty standard for a “moderate” sprain — a tear of some degree — but the MRI will provide the actual diagnosis.
Things that are keeping me somewhat positive or atleast momentarily off the nearest rooftop: 1) his being able to walk on it at all suggests its not ruptured; 2) the inability to bend his knee could be a result of the inflammatory reaction/the body’s defence system and less to do with actual mechanics; 3) he will have the best possible care (i.e., advanced technology, physical therapy) which ALWAYS leads to better outcomes; and 4) he came back earlier than expected from his last injury — because it was playoffs — but it shows that his body is completely capable of full recovery.
Knowing that — and praying the MRI shows as minimal damage as possible — I’m able to stay somewhat positive.
I think Nick Leddy
just peed himself a little.

I sort of feel bad for Hjammer.
Leddy’s decent, but he’s no Soupy, and when Leddy was paired with Seabs, Biscuit found himself doing a lot of compensating.

I have an idea
How about we trade Johnsson back to Minny for Barker? Someone dig him up!
(yes, I know Dead Man is not under contract – I’m just trying to make a funny)

especially against the Blues
expect them to goon it up big time and target Leddy specifically. My theory is Q will eventually send out either Seabrook or Scott with Leddy. Over/under on doing that within the first 10 minutes of the first period?
