Hammer Gets 2
The decision came down, and Niklas Hjalmarsson was suspended for the same two games professional dunderhead James Wisniewski got for, uh....suggesting what Sean Avery might do in his spare time.
I don't think this is too surprising. Having a full day to reflect on it, while I don't think the hit was malicious it was reckless and put another professional in danger. There were many other options Hammer could have gone with, and he opted for the killshot that could alter Jason Pominville's career. Seeing as how this is a hot-button issue amongst players, he was never going to get away clean. The two games are against Nashville and Columbus, not exactly free scoring outfits. He'll be back for the return date for the Sabres, and though Patrick Kaleta talks a big game, no punk like that is going to actually do anything about it. It's hard to fathom was Sabre would make himself known, and one gets the impression Lindy Ruff is above this kind of bullshit. But we shall see.
In the meantime, we get to enjoy a bottom four of Scott, Boynton, Leddy, and Hendry. Yip. Eee.

I'm begrudgingly OK with this
All I ask is going forward, the NHL is consistent with applying such penalties – i.e. a hit like Ovi on Campbell or Cooke on Savard should get at least double what Toftbo received.
Somehow I don’t think that’s going to happen.
Geek Misconduct: It's October - time to get your geek on.
im okay with this suspension with the hopes that it will put some end to the wheel of justice
this hit couldve been the best hit of the season if the puck was a foot farther onto his stick and he had rotated 20 degrees.
the wheel of justice
will never stop spinning. there will always be some new situation or rule that the NHL has to enforce but, not in a consistent manner.

CAL a few years back skated 15, but had more than enough immediate injuries to justify
This is two games in a row, with days off in between. How is this an emergency anymore. It is not, it is the inability to call up a player [or 4] from the AHL due to CAP constraints. An emergency is an injury the day of or prior to the game, not 4 days later. If you can not dress 18 after 4 days because of CAP issues, that is a circumvention, not an emergency.
If it takes a post that long to justify skating 15-16, you are probably not in a good position to start off with.

chi is right
only issue is that a player being suspended doesn’t qualify as an emergency. the first game is happened, they were ok because they had 2 injured players while they dressed 16 and perennial d bag janssen was suspended. 16 + 2 injured is 18. the second game is where the NHL should have done something. they dressed 15 with two injured and one suspended. that’s 17 and it breaks the laws of the CBA. if the NHL is truly serious about the laws of the CBA, they need to enforce all of them.

I'm not OK with it for exactly the same reason
if you think he was reckless and should be suspended, then fine, suspend him. I didn’t think it as a dirty hit, but that’s me, and the hit did have some very unfortunate consequences. When Soupy got hurt last year, I was among those who said the injury that resulted should be taken under consideration on a suspension for Ovechkin, and I’m willing to stand by that now.
But to have absolutely NO PARITY in decision-making? This message basically says that intent counts for nothing, and that head-hunting as long — as long as you execute poorly and are mediocre at it — is perfectly acceptable in the NHL. And that’s the kind of message that made me turn my back on hockey more-or-less for a few years in the 90’s.
Suspend Hammer, fine, but Wiz should have gotten more, as should have Ovie (who’s hit was CLEARLY from behind, not debatable as it was in Hjammer’s case). THAT is why I think this is bullshit, not b/c I’m a homer or b/c i’m bitter that my team is losing a good player for two games.
happy ninja is happy....and wants to share its new toy!
by puppetmasterp on Oct 12, 2010 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm taking a wait and see approach
When the first Ovie/Cooke like hit of the season occurs, the NHL must suspend that player, at a minimum, five games. If not, then Toftbo’s suspension was just a big PR move to make him an example as the first controversial hit of the season.
One wonders what Cammalleri would have gotten for his back of the leg slash vs. the Islanders had it not been preseason. Because there’s no doubt what the intent was on that action. Then again, he’s a “star” so he probably would have still gotten the one game.
Geek Misconduct: It's October - time to get your geek on.
I'm lost in a boat somewhere between the 2 of you
Hjalmarsson’s hit was probably a bad one to make an example out of. Yet I hope that the NHL is consistent going forward.

Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
There's actually a great comment on Puck Daddy:
Hjalmarsson didn’t hit the head, didn’t leave his feet and didn’t use his elbow. Pominville was not facing the boards or slumped over. And Hjalmarsson’s hit was about 60% from behind and 40% from the side. In fact, had he hit Pominville straight from behind, Pominville never would’ve hit the glass. It was an unfortunate result of a hit that in most cases would’ve been a 2-minute minor.
Amen. I also agree with Puck Daddy that the hullabaloo around this is more linked to the aftermath rather than the hit itself. If Pominville picked himself up and skated off we wouldn’t really be looking at suspension, in my opinion. Jelly would have gotten a 2 minute boarding/roughing/interference minor.

I'm sure Keith "Knee to Knee" Jones is self-righteously indignant ...
I’m fine with a suspension for any hit where the player is “defenseless,” but I think 5 game suspensions for non-malicious/intentional hits would be the hallmark of physical play being removed from the game. The fact that hockey is a rough game has to be balanced against the need to protect players. That tips the balance too far for safety.

$3.5 million comes with expectations. Nintendo has to build on last season to earn this. of course it’s very early, but he’s been sluggish. let’s hope he comes back prepared to carry some extra water until Soup returns.

while I agree that Hammer hasn't been great,
Dunc and Seabs have just been so-so thus far as well. I’m not sure it is fair to single hammer out at this point since he’s been stuck paired with “spare parts” (I know that Nick Leddy is more talented than spare parts). I expect Dunc and Seabs to start the season better than Hammer without campbell.
Ditto for Badgerdano
Hammer without Campbell was a sight for sore eyes in Game 4 of the Finals, and has proceeded to look that way through the first 2 games and one period.
Last year the ‘Hawks tried this same thing {splitting up D2K and Seabrook} and it didn’t go that well. Based on that I’d be a little reluctant to try it again, but Q is Q and he’ll try anything even if it continues to fail … like Kopecky on the top line.

haven’t seen much on marty (who took responsibility for detroit himself) and Jelly. the reason is obvious to me- scary mouthbreather proximity, niemi dot-connecting, blah blah blah. so i feel it should be said.
the kid’s got some pressure on him- not his fault, just the way it’s played out. and he got out of the gate poorly, then maybe a bit of frustration takes him out for a couple games. no biggie- reset and come out Saturday like a core guy, cuz 72 is gonna be stepping on their tongues.

I just watched the hit a few more times.
And I still agree with Q. Jelly was playing the puck, and if Pominville’s head hadn’t smashed into the boards (because he neglected the fact that a hard hitting defenseman was coming at him) this likely wouldn’t have resulted in anything.
It just pisses me off that the Sabres players are treating Jelly like some sort of fucking Hitler now. Every player gets hit this every now and again. Especially when the puck isn’t all the way to them. Pominville just happened to hit the boards the wrong way and now Jelly is getting called out by everyone.

I agree with you about the villification of Jelly
I think that’s the part of this entire situation that bothers me the most, since he’s not that type of player at all. He has absolutely NO history of these types of hits or plays, yet people are acting like he’s Pronger or something. >_<
I’m watching “NHL on the Fly”, and Mike Johnson agrees with you about how this was just a hockey hit, this happens all the time, and Pom should’ve braced himself, knew he was coming, etc etc. while Kevin Weekes was saying, as a goalie, those hits make him angry because the person could get really hurt. I find it interesting, the differences in views, given their positions. Makes me think of Miller’s comments. Interestingly, Weekes says that even if Pom got up and skated away, it should’ve been a GM and suspension, while Johnson said it was a penalty and should’ve just stayed a penalty, maybe a GM.
I wonder
If Hammer scores the game winning goal, that the sabers fans will be up in arms because he could of been out of the game with a longer suspension.
On a happy note, I noticed Toews run and get the puck for leddy. That was cute.

I heard that they were fighting over who would go last, as they would be the sole person in the Guiness Book of World Records for the longest time spent underground.
um,no
They are not heros. That word gets thrown around way too much. It’s a wonderful story, don’t get me wrong. It was a hell of an effort by everyone to rescue them. Truly amazing, I would go so far as miraculous. What they are is survivors.

Good point Johnny
they’re very tough, and did what they had to survive, but didn’t do anything heroic. I’d say the guys who worked their asses off to get them out should have that label instead.
My hatred of the Canucks is matched only by my love of drinking.
Has anybody read an explanation of this "verdict?"
The rules of getting a suspension from a Boarding Game Misconduct are specifically written into the NHL rulebook.
For a one game suspension, you need to have a Boarding Game Misconduct and a previous one in the last 41 games.
To get a second game added to the suspension, you need to have been suspended previously.
Yea, I know, rule 28 allows for League “discretion” but that really only gets applied for “something” (i.e. Intent, history, etc).
So if Hjammer got two games without the “history” the league is either “making the rules up as they go” or they changed the referee’s call to something else.
I’d really like to hear the explanation of the verdict. Otherwise they really need to rewrite their rulebook since the current one appears to be obsolete…
Versus reported the suspension as citing the 'hits to the head' rule (which this wasn't)
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
I think that all these people calling Hammer's
check a “hit to the head” has driven me the craziest about this play.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
It was the first controversial hit of the season
I believe they are just trying to make an example of him and let it be known that they aren’t going to tolerate any questionable hits.
It's THE GOAALLLIEEE!!!!!
like the tightening of every other rule of the last 20 years
that is all relaxed again by playoffs?
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
As long as Rule 28 exists (Supplementary Discipline)
the Commissioner’s office can pretty much do what they want.

Is anyone else enjoying the slow start?
On point, first. I’m not surprised by this but I think it is silly to throw two games his way for something with a lot of gray area, and will someone tell Ryan Miller to stop his whining?
On another note, is anyone else enjoying this slow start?
I’ve already seen several bandwagon fans grumble and tell me how this team “fucking sucks.” One comment on my FB today and my dad telling me how Turco is terrible. A slow start hopefully means cheap tickets later on. I have no doubt this team will persevere but let’s shed some dead weight now please, thank you.
Oh, come on
It’s not that stupid of a thought. I’ve thought the same thing several times already this year.

I dont consider this a slow start
they are 1-1-1 and had the same record as last year. I didn’t expect them to be 3-0-0. Well see after another week here, but they will be 500 or better
what?
This is the same start as last year? O.M.G.

I'm was just saying that I didn't like "the slow start" to get rid of the bandwagoners
I’d rather win and deal with assholes. That’s not saying I’m on a ledge wondering where the Hawks went wrong. I’m fine with the start. Just clearing that up
My hatred of the Canucks is matched only by my love of drinking.
I don't consider it slow, either
But lots of people do and are already starting to bail. Good riddance… see you in May!

Proposing a new SCH game ...
Well, it’s not really proposing because I’m going to do it anyway. Over the season, how many times can you fool people into looking at a clip to Wiz giving Avery the blowjob motion.
Anyway, in other news, he’s a angle of the Hammer hit that I believe exculpates him from any league discipline:

What has Hammer done before? 2 games? Maybe 1 but the hit from the side not directly in the back. Hell in the NFL that isn't even a block in the back.

This is exactly the point. This is not football. The two sports have nothing in common.
Hammer is suspended for two games and he is lucky it wasn’t more. He is also lucky that Pom was not more seriously injured, but time will tell how bad his head injury turns out to be.
Making comparisons between the NHL and the NFL? Come on, if you don’t know what you are talking about, you will come across as smarter if you don’t say anything.
Mickey Redmond sucks
Sucks that Hammer
gets a 2 game suspension….don’t agree with it at all…but whats done is done….Hawks gonna have a tough time beating the preds tonight and the Blue JAckets on Friday without Hammer
Don’t like the fact that Kaleta has pretty much threatened the Blackhawks players through the media, saying that something will be done about Hammer’s hit

Also heard an interesting thought on the radio broadcast in that Buffalo has the seamless glass, and that if this happened in an arena like the United Center, which has the partitions, then Pominville might’ve been better off because the partitioned glass has a lot more give. The rigidity of the seamless glass really probably didn’t help.
Anyone know the validity of thiis? Seems logical, but then why would leagues ever go with the seamless glass if it’s potentially safer? Cost savings? Less chances of odd bounces?

the seamless glass is heavier/sturdier - so it is possible
another thing we see in some newer dedicated ice arenas is the boards (and ice surface) being a couple feet down from the surrounding seating such that the boards give less too. I don’t think any NHL arenas are set up that way though (because they’re multi-use buildings)

Rafalski out indefinitely (knee surgery)
Ericcson is having back issues.
Detroit is having similar problems as The Hawks, except Campbell will be back soon and hammer will be back this week. Also, Hammer is better than Ericcson.

Irony?
I had to watch the Fax Detroit feed. Well, I didn’t have to, but the big TV is easier on the eyes than the little computer screen. Anyway, before the game Bobcock was saying that the Hawks cap situation…blah blah blah, and that he also thought the Wings were deeper.
What happens when Franzen goes down? He usually does. Zetterberg’s back? Kronwall’s knees? If those three go down we’ll see how deep they are.
Mickey Redmond sucks
does Zetterberg have back problems?
I know Franzen and Kronwall are likely to get injured. They’ve still got Filppula and Hudler though, for scoring I guess. Maybe Abdelkader in the blueline.
The funny thing with the Red Wings— I don’t really know them besides their top players. I just hear the names of their other players thrown out a lot, but I don’t think I’ve ever really found it interesting to see whether those role players are good or just names that get repeated a lot.
(Tweets @ChiBlackhawks and blogs at Blackhawks Down Low.)
by chiblackhawks on Oct 13, 2010 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions
Their top players are very good
Their coach is good.
Zetterberg has a history of back issues and he has missed some time because of his back and has constant back pain, according to the Detroit media.
Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Cleary (I know we tried that once), Filppula, etc. With the exception of Filppula, and even he may be an upgrade for the Hawks, which one of these guys would you not want to see in a Hawks uniform? I know, none of them right? But based on hockey playing ability and history which one would you not want? Their core is good, very comparable to The Hawks.
However, Fuck them and the piece of shit rusted out stadium they play in.
Mickey Redmond sucks
in a Hawks uniform instead of whom?
they’d be an upgrade – or downgrade – depending on who they replaced
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
If Datsyuk came to The Hawks
there would be no downgrade. That guy is simply awesome. The only possible downgrade would be his age.
Mickey Redmond sucks
would you trade Kane for him?
or Toews or Keith?
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
If I had to make a trade for Datsyuk and those were the only three I could trade
Kane would be gone.
I am simply saying that The Wings are a good team. They have a core that is comparable skill wise, although older, to The Hawks.
Compare the objectively.
Zetterberg – Sharp
Franzen – Hossa
Lidstrom – Keith
Rafalski – Campbell
Seabrook – Kronwall
Datsyuk – Toews
Cleary – Kop
Hammer – Stuart
Hudler – Kane (not really close here)
I know where I give the edge to in each case. Think about it.
I do think that by seasons end The Hawks
Mickey Redmond sucks
didn't finish
I do think that by seasons end The Hawks younger new guys will be better than the Wings players and this will be the difference.
I like this Hawks team.
Mickey Redmond sucks
i wouldn't make that trade - the younger star is more valuable
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
I wouldn't initiate that trade either
But, as I said, If I had to make a trade in that situation, it would be Kane, not Toews or Keith.
Mickey Redmond sucks
I thought Abdelkader was a forward

First off
Screw the (E)astern (S)eaboard (P)rogramming (N)etwork !
Second, I’m going to give the league a pass on this for the very reason they appear to be more proactive in trying to get a handle on the violent hits that cause concussions.
It (concussion) has a HUGE storyline now in all of sports. I won’t get into whether the hit looked legal or not. The guy went down and was carted off. I think the league is leveraging off this now whereas in previous seasons they did not.
Using the injuries of last season as a benchmark to help push for lesser injuries, the league this year handed out 2 games whereas this time last season they may not have done the same.
This will be proven through out the season if there are lesser hits like this or bigger suspensions should hits like this (or worse) occur.
Just win the next game...!
if - for the first time ever - the NHL is consistent in meting out discipline, that alone will have a bigger impact
than any particular rule they might adopt.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
Oh for sure
We’ll really get to see what happens and if the league has some stones (I don’t hold out the greatest hope) the next time Ovie does one of his things that results in an injury like Soupy had.
Just win the next game...!
Or

Beer. Now there's a temporary solution.
When Alex Ovechkin hits someone like Hammer did
he better be looking at 5 games minimum. Until I see the league ACTUALLY be consistent with discipline, I’ll continue to be skeptical and think Hammer got ripped off.
by Katherine215 on Oct 13, 2010 9:29 AM CDT up reply actions
It's a moving target IMO
And in no way am I going to assume they actually will get it right. Too much history speaks otherwise. We’ll just have to see if either 1, these hits occur less frequently or 2, the suspensions are 2-3 times longer.
Just win the next game...!
Well, Hammer comes back against Buffalo. The minions over at DBTB are callling for his head and I can’t think of a better time then having lurch keep order.
I don't understand
Pom gets hurt — RAR PLAYERS SHOULD BE SAFE THIS KIND OF SHITTY PLAY IS STUPID WIILL NO ONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN HAMMER SHOULD GET SUSPENDED FOR BEING A CHEAP SHOT GOON

no doubt. It’s like yelling at your kid for eating candy and then immediately tossing them a snicker’s bar and some Smarties to gnaw on.
And since Kaleta
has made his veiled threat of retaliation, this could be an immediate test of NHL disciplinary consistency. Let’s say, for the sake of argument, Kaleta takes a cheap hit on Jelly (or anybody else on the ice, for that matter). Since the threat was made in advance, can’t help but wonder what the NHL reponse might be. What say you, Colin Campbell?

The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
An apparently stupid question.
Has Hammer’s suspension been announced officially by the NHL?
The reason I ask is this. The Wisniewski suspension is documented with a brief statement/article on NHL.com. I’m going on the assumption that NHL.com is the league’s official internet outlet for official league announcements and information.
If this is the case I would expect to find some documentation of Hammer’s suspension there, but can not.
I also find it strange that there’s no mention of it on the Hawks web site either.
I’m not saying I don’t believe he’s going to be suspended. At this point I’m sure he will. It just seems quite odd to me that this is being reported everywhere except on the league’s own official news outlet.
Someone please set me straight and tell me what I’m missing here?
