They Know Where To Find Me, I Guess They Ain't Lookin For Me Tonight
After having let last night's shootout win sink in a little bit more, I've got a few more thoughts during the off day as the Hawks turn right around and play the Blues again tomorrow. So, if you'll indulge me a bit, we'll get right to them.
- While the Corsi numbers show Bolland's line getting torched, primarily facing the Twins for the majority of the game, to me, they weren't all that noticable. They were more noticeable than the ghosts that were Mikael Samuelsson and Ryan Kesler, however.
- Additionally, while the Hawks got outshot, as a team, they in my opinion played their tightest defensive game yet, doing far less running around in their own zone. There were minimal second chance opportunities for the Canucks, and Turco did a great job of not allowing those even as the shot totals accumulated.
- Leave it to John Scott to make Jassen Cullimore look like Chris Pronger. All joking aside, though, Cullimore has been far from terrible in his newfound third pairing role, something that I doubted would have been possible. His game has always had flaws and he's 37, but you have to appreciate the guy willing to slog it out in the minors to get his shot in the show again. A bottom pairing of Cullimore and Boynton once Campbell returns wouldn't be the worst thing in the world with the way those two are playing. Boynton could stand to play a little bit more disciplined positionally, however.
- The Skille and Stalberg thing is getting beaten to death, but that doesn't mean we're going to stop. Whatever perceived defensive zone deficiencies they may have couldn't possibly be that much worse than those of Bryan Bickell. Perhaps Q's finally getting the picture though, if his remarks in Rogers' blog are to be believed
"You look at energy lines around the league, they could be as quick as there is," Quenneville said.
How nice of him to finally see what many of us had been screaming at the tops of our lungs since before October 7th in Colorado. - We give him a ton of well-deserved shit here, but Roberto Luongo kept his team in the game last night. The Hawks could have very easily had a 4-0 lead after the first period, but the man frequently known as Reboundo was nowhere to be found.
- It will be interesting to see which game Quenneville gives Turco off over the weekend during the back to backs. While he's been playing well and you hate to break any rhythm that he has, it'd be best not to overwork him early. The smart money says Corey Crawford gets a look at purported wiener tucker Rick Nash and his teammates on Saturday night.
- Lastly, a bit of self-congratulatory bullshit. Last night was Sam's 100th gameday edition of the Committed Indian, so congratulations to him.

The pic on the front page this morning of Jonny-be-good 5-holing that crybaby last night totally offset it. Ok, Ok, offset it by one standings point…

I’m not saying I don’t like a good hard hit, but shit like that is scary. It’s kind of like the hit on DeSean Jackson, cool for a second, then you realize you don’t wish that on most players.

It's a physical game. Hits are part of it.
I’m not talking about permanent physical injury, I’m talking about a good, clean hit. Head down over center ice is not in the best interests of your insurance payout.

VerSwede and Skillz
have just been ridiculous on the forecheck thus far, and with bolland on the backcheck, that line should be fine defensively. If Q is uncomfortable with giving that proposed line the checking role, give it to Toews-Hoss-Kopy. As is being pointed out by many, Q is missing out on a chance to improve this team’s scoring depth by making something out of the third line. A Dowell-Pisani-Bickell fourth line won’t do much for you, but they shouldn’t see that many minutes anyway.
Ditto for Badgerdano
I though the D was really good (from what I could tell in the 20 minutes of uncrappy streaming video I received last night).
Maybe a sit-down was just what Hjams needed. His fortunes have changed since his hit on Pomiville.
I think the only place this current team will be weaker at from our Championship Team will be the 3rd line. Our 4th line is better and I do think we’re much improved at G. I’ll take this trade-off any day of the week, but this doesn’t mean I don’t really miss the slug that was Sopel inhuming shots or Steegs skating circles around his opponents, or yelling out “Niemi says NO!” It’s different and I like that I’m getting used to it this early in the season.
Highlight of the game for me last night...
…was when after the ceremonial puck drop with the 17 year old cancer patient, Toews handed the guy the puck and then gave him his stick and he said a few words as he did so, and I got the feeling he autographed the stick in advance…just a feeling I got watching the exchange. Just another thing about him that is never going to show up on a stat sheet but is exactly the kind of stuff that makes me so proud to have Jonathan Toews as our Captain.

But what really struck me (again) was the way Toews carries himself at the age of 22. That 17 yr old “kid” is pretty close in age to our captain. Sometimes it’s easy to act “professionally” (hopefully everyone understands what I mean by this) with people who are significantly younger or older than yourself. Toews was a class-act with someone in his peer group. I was very impressed.

People in general should act with grace and class. Go back and read the third period thread last night. Then imagine Toews saying 1/2 the stupid shit that was said. Nope. He acts with class most of the time. He’s a good captain.
You’ll also notice that those on th eHawks that don’t act accordingly (Kane is the major exception) are no longer wearing Hawks uniforms. Coincidence? Probably, but still interesting

does anyone know how to nominate a veteran for the on-ice spot during the national anthem? i know a great wwII/korean war marine/army vet who would be a great candidate. probably the best person i’ve ever met, and i would love to see him out there.
Hey Raditzzzz....
I know that the USO handles all of that for the Military personnel so I would check with the Chicago USO office and they might be able to assist. I heard an interview on one of the sports talk shows last season (can’t remember which one) interviewing one of the shot callers from the USO and he mentioned that representing the Military at home Hawks games is BY FAR the most requested event. Hope that helps you out and best of luck.

Gotta say.. I had a little bit of heartburn from the 2 glove side shots on Turco (Huet flashbacks), and seeing how well they went for the first two Cafucks, I have no fucking clue why Samuelsson went stick side, but I’m glad he did.

Refs last night were crap.
The Turks thing wasn’t a penalty, Kopy got a penalty for goalie interference when video and eyetest showed he’d been nowhere near Lu.
I was not impressed with the officiating last night. I don’t think it changed the outcome of the game, but I thought that the zebras could have been better.
by spokeinthebandwagon on Oct 21, 2010 3:49 PM CDT up reply actions
Agree on Turco and Kop penalties.
Kop was in fact near Lu, but he was pushed. I’m not entirely clear on what constitutes goalie interfereance but my version of common sense tells me that should not have been a penalty.
Also, the Turco penalty… It sure seemed to me that he poked that puck before the Canucklehead tripped. That seemed like a weak call to me.
Other than that, I’m not sure I"d say the refs were crap though.

Here's the deal with Turco
vs Huet and even Nemo: he knows where — and where not — to direct the rebounds.
There’s nothing wrong with a rebound, But a rebound right back out in front of you is bad juju. A rebound pushed to the side or somewhere else where it won’t bite yer ass is the way you should do it; gloving it just gives the opponent a face off in your own end.

i might go a bit further- Turco engages the game like a hockey player, not a goalie. You see him directing traffic and pointing out passes, he follows the puck well and is very aware of the on-ice situation.
i love Nemo and love the way he stepped up last year but so far [insert sample size disclaimer] Marty looks like an upgrade.

The 3,160th and final strip ran on Sunday, December 31, 1995. It depicted Calvin and Hobbes outside in freshly-fallen snow, reveling in the wonder and excitement of the winter scene. “It’s a magical world, Hobbes, ol’ buddy… Let’s go exploring!” Calvin exclaims as they zoom off over the snowy hills on their sled.

Random Observations (Canucks and Previous So Far)
Toews – Not winning the battles on the boards as we’ve grown accustomed to seeing. Seems a litle chippier than usual as a result, as evidenced by some questionable penalties in the early going.
Kane – Seems more committed to defensive play this year (but not necessarily more effective in that area). I think I prefer him hanging at the other side’s blue line to cherry pick.
Keith – Really seems not to be himself. A lot more bad passes, getting beaten on positioning, etc. Hard to understand why he seems to have taken a substantial step back in his play. Has got to start getting his shots on net.
Scott – I don’t think he’s as bad/is going to be as bad on defense as everyone fears and I was fearing through the first few appearances. Granted, he is painfully slow and I’m not even sure his turning radius is as good as that of a Zamboni (as someone else posted). That being said, I think that poor decision-making, a little bit of hesitation due to his new surroundings, and poor positioning was exposing his lack of speed and skating ability more than will be the case as the season goes on. I think he looked better last night because he is playing better positionally so as not to expose his poor skating quite so much. If that continues, I think he can grow to be a reliable member of the third pairing.
Boynton – Although there is a lot I like about his play, he coughed the puck up in the defensive zone at least four or five times last night. He has got to do a better job of keeping the puck on his stick in tight spaces and hitting the outlet pass.
Skille, Stahlberg, Dowell – Really nice game last night. If they can bring that kind of speed and energy on a consistent basis, it’s going to be interesting to see how their scoring develops over the course of the season.
Kopecky/Brouwer – I’m not sure either of these guys are being utilized where/how they should be, but don’t pretend to have the answers. Hossa clearly likes playing with Kop, and they way he’s been tearing it up makes it hard to do anything to a line that makes Hossa happy. What to do with Brouwer seems almost to be an afterthought and he’s playing like it. At the risk of being accused of heresy, I am beginning to entertain thoughts of whether the Hawks shouldn’t shop him to fill some of their other needs.
Overall – Still haven’t seen the puck possession game we got spoiled by last year. Too many shots on goal. Turco has been solid so far. Far fewer big rebounds than Niemi, but less effective on breakaways. I think we ultimately will lose some points on shootouts, an area where Niemi excelled and Turco doesn’t inspire confidence (at least not so far, but acknowledging the limited experience).
Didn't I have a helmet when I came in here?
by Tomas (not Kopecky) on Oct 21, 2010 5:07 PM CDT reply actions
2 things
On Kane: I think he’s regressed (early season analysis) on his desire to backcheck. That could be him being sick for a couple games, that could be a cup hangover type thing, or that could just be him not giving a shit.
On Brouwer: What would you consider “other needs”? I’d say that if you trade Brouwer, a top 6 left winger becomes a need. With Brouwer making just over a mil, you won’t be able to bring much back at that price anyway.
Ditto for Badgerdano

LoL.. I have to laugh, and share a story with you.
One of my SSG’s wears the 10th on his right. While we were in Afghanistan, he loved to trash talk all the other patches people wore there – 3rd ID – Broken TV; 82nd – Al Anon; 101st – screaming chicken; etc… etc… He took great comfort and pride in knowing that nobody had ever come up with a derogatory name for the 10th.
So, one night, we’re sitting in the TOC, and I looked to my left at him and had an epiphany. I asked him "can you explain to me why it is that you’re so proud to be a “swordfighter?” He went “Huh?” I said “you’ve got that swordfight on your right shoulder there… with the mountain tab over it. Do you get a brokeback tab to go above it once you’ve been indoctrinated?”
He was flabbergasted, and admitted that there was nothing he could say about being called a swordfighter, because that’s what the patch looks like.
So, welcome to the swordfighters!
Everyone dies. It is the only true and lasting justice in life.
That's pretty funny that he had nothing to come back with....
Yeah, as far as the ‘cool guy’ patches, 82nd and 10th Mountain have a pretty wild rivalry and the 101st is the other that gets into it.
We always say, ’We’re the baddest unit in the Army. We’re light infantry, we ruck and carry our lives on our backs. We deploy to the worst places and we do it more than any other unit. 10th Mountain is the most deployed unit in the Army.’
And then someone brings up a sword fight. Talk about ‘earning your Mountain Tab’…

I volunteered for it every day,
ANY request for a volunteer and I had my hand up first. By the time we were digging latrines, I was “not allowed” to volunteer. HA!

I volunteered for one duty in BCT
It was basically a CQ Runner for BN. Our DS had duty, and we had to sit in this office, where there was a TV, a radio, a candy vending machine, and a pop machine.
My buddy and I told no-one else about it, and volunteered every time it came up.
Everyone dies. It is the only true and lasting justice in life.
God, it is amazing
just how important a TV can become at that time. lol
Being able to trade cleaning a chili pot for 10 cigarettes was one of my greatest discoveries in basic.
Well, also the fact that I had a returnee from Nam that had a PH. He had to display it in our locker, so the DS would start to inspect our locker, salute, shut the doors, and proceed to rip the fuck out of the next locker in line.

I went in, and said “I’d like to be a submariner.” The recruiter said “Well, most people can’t score high enough on the test for it, so there’s no way we can guarantee that for you.”
I said “Okay, thanks. I can guarantee that you won’t see me again then.” Then I went and talked to the Army. History.

The battle I was talking about specifically was in 2009.
It was in the area most recently in the news for the deaths of those 10 aid workers… if you google ‘Barg-e Matal Nuristan 2009 operation mountain fire 1-32 infantry’ you’ll get some decent background on it. The Navy was there… a commander (O-5) and a Corpsman were embedded with us for the mission. They were awesome.
