It Was Bound To Happen Eventually - Blues 4, Hawks 2
We knew the Hawks playing like this would bite them squarely in the ass eventually, it just licks a big, hairy, sweaty set of nuts that it had to be against the Blues.
Things started tonight with both teams flying up and down the ice with reckless abandon and not much use for any manner of neutral ice defense. A Fernando Pisani turnover at the right defensive half wall and Nick Boynton swimming at the resultant 2-on-1 led to David Perron's first goal of the evening, picking his corner cleanly on Marty Turco. The Hawks quickly equalized things on a rocket from Patrick Sharp from the top of the left circle on the power play to draw even at 1-1, but were outshot 12-8 in the first.
Perron once again gave the Blues the lead six minutes in on a nice backhand in transition with Boynton once again getting turned around backing into Turco on the goal. Brent Seabrook pulled the Hawks even on a slapper through traffic three minutes later just as a penalty had expired, and the teams traded chances through the remainder of the period.
The third period was fairly even until Roman Polak's floater from the right hashmark somehow made its way through Marty Turco's legs. The closest the Hawks would get from there would be a Viktor Stalberg post, as Brent Seabrook would be taken off late for a delay of game penalty, and a ricocheting shot would find its way to Patrik Berglund's tape right in front of Turco which he didn't miss to put the game away for good. Winning streak over, Blues win 4-2.
Observations
- Despite the loss, the Hawks had a solid shot blocking night right from the get go, and the Corsi numbers reflect that when contrasted against the Blues 28 shots on goal.
- Turco's gotta have that third goal, whether it was through traffic, hit a skate or not. Plain and simple.
- David Perron - officially annoying.
- Jack Skille got drilled on the right boards in the first by Carlo Coliaccovo after chipping the puck in. While I personally believe the hit was clean, by the letter of the law as far as the new mandate on headshots is concerned in the league, something could have been called.
- John Scott's first fight in a Hawk uni was about as anticlimactic as 17 year old coming in his pants as the head cheerleader breathes heavily on his earlobe.
- While the powerplay was very un-clown shoes for the first two periods, it looked like absolute hell during the chance mid-way through the third and needing an equalizer.
- Boynton looked awful on Perron's two goals, particularly the second. In that case, he needed to stay on his feet and force him to the outside.
- Duncan Keith's decision making is still leaving a lot to be desired.
- Paging Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.
- Hopefully tonight doesn't give Q an itchy trigger finger for any rash decisions for tomorrow night's game back at the UC against Columbus. Skille and Stalberg did nothing to piss away a lineup spot. Look for Crawford tomorrow night as well.

Chemistry....
Keith is trying too hard to make up for defense losses. He’ll be back to normal as the season progresses, he’s a pro. Q I hope will play with roster spots until he finds the combination’s that will take the Hawks to the netherlands again this year. Lots of good young kids on this team but the vets are trying to do too much to make up the slack.
Kane looked awesome early but Toews needs to find his game, being way too serious out there and he needs to start potting the puck.
Kane has looked far from awesome. In fact, he’s one of the players that Toews has looked better than – albeit minimal.
And … the ‘Hawks went to the netherlands? Might explain Kane’s slow start – still trying to recover from the legal prostitution and cannibis.

OK, I am NOT trying to start a goalie controversy here, just making an observation. Turco has let in a number of soft goals so far, that has to stop.
Also, if I were shooting on Turco, I’d go high glove side.
39 years of pain (1971 loss to Habs) vaporized by one OT goal.
I dunno
that snap that got past the glove he maybe should have had. The deflection off a skate and through the legs of a Blues player and his own? He never saw it through the screen.
And he did a nice job of pushing a Blues player out of his crease at one point, too. (I was watching on a small TV in a bar/restaurant, so couldn’t always make out details.)
Our Cup.
Don't forget the two shootout goals...
If I’m not mistaken they were high glove side.

on my fantasy team, sure would be nice if he scored a few goals.
On a different note, I think it is time for something to be done with Pisani. He just looks out of place out there.
Observations from the game
Was at the game tonight. Both teams were chasing the puck and not controlling it. 2nd period was like watching a peewee league game….except little kids try to score. On Seabs’ score…nice shot, but it could’ve been done about 15 seconds earlier. Hossa was off to the right ready to go, not even a look in his direction let alone a pass. And Turco….jesus christ, where do I begin? The guy never looks ready. It’s like he’s surprised when the puck comes into the zone. Plays way the hell out of the crease, which I’m surprised didn’t bite him in the ass tonight, and that floater should not have gotten past him.
This is pure pissing and moaning here, but if Turco’s gonna keep playing like this, dump him and bring Huet back up. No point in paying both of them for inconsistent goaltending.
It's all fun and games until Crosby cries. Then it's frackin' hilarious.

made the play of the game by not touching that puck. Turco was playing the tip, and he would have been right on.

It's fine to play the tip
The stick has to be on the ice. The stick stops the shot on the ice between the legs.
I’ll bet he has been told to get his stick on the ice thousands of times since he started playing.
He made a mistake there, but why did Keith make the ring around play? He gave it right to the Blues..
Your arms off
No it isn't
ding ding ding
Question for Duncan Keith: you’re fresh on the ice, collecting a pass from Marty. The cross-ice pass to Cullimore looks risky, but the soft ring around to Cully is a no-brainer.
Plan B is a chip behind you to your center to lead a break-out- a bit risky, but not for you.
So, wtf? You’re not really pressured, and can hold the puck and take a peek if you like, but you crank it blindly around the boards instead.
You’ve been off a bit this year, tho still an anchor. it’s cool, no sweat. But on this play, really, what were you thinking? I’ll hang up and listen for your response.

I'm fine with Turco so far
He’s doing a pretty darn good job behind a defense that has performed as a shell of itself so far this year. That being said, people often complain about goalies going down too soon. Turco seems to actually go down too late quite often. Maybe it’s because when he does go to the ice it’s typically a First Alert situation?
And yes, stick on the ice Turc. Goalie school 101.

I'd think
it’s because he’s small – big goalies can go down and still take up a good portion of the net just by making themselves big.
By the way – Turco standing next to murdersaurus is hilarious.

The ’Hawks could help Turco by not allowing 30+ shots every game.
He’s been as good as Niemi was last year. Not spectacular, but solid.
2010 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS
It's been a long journey but in the end it was all worth it, and I wouldn't have ever changed a thing. The feeling is so surreal, yet so real.
I believe Turco is far superior to Niemi in two key areas.
1) The obvious one that all have beaten to death, which is puck handling & movement. The extra pounding that our D will avoid because of this will tell in the long run.
2) Rebound control. It is so refreshing to see so many fewer rebounds. But more importantly, to see the puck being directed to the corners rather than right out in front on those shots that Turco doesn’t or can’t hold. In the long run this will result in far fewer second chance opportunities over the course of the season.
Now, if the boys would get their shit together in the defensive zone maybe I can cut back on my 1/5 a game habit.
"Against logic there is no armor like ignorance."
- Laurence J. Peter
I don’t find Turco’s rebound control to be THAT much better than Niemi’s. He does give out a lot, not as much, but a lot. Most of them lay in the crease which makes me quiver a lot more than Niemi’s rebounds to the point.
Overall (And I’m probably going to say this a lot this year) the only upgrade I see over the two is financially – Turco’s salary was a lot more easier to digest than Niemi’s.

The Defense doing its Defense thing was not bad
It is when they try to move the puck that appear to be ridding without training wheels. hot Blocking was good, blocking the passing lanes, not bad, GETTING THE FUCKING PUCK OUT OF THE ZONE = Dog Diarrhea.
Speaking of the D, they need to take more shots from the point. They did a few times last night, and got a few rebounds as a result, you can’t bury them all but getting them will help. Besides it will force the others D to play those shooting lanes more and open the ice some for the forwards low.
Perron is not a Douchebag [yet] but that Cock Holster has the Hawks number right now, he must be demotivated.
