Two Points Is As Two Points Does: Kings 1 - Hawks 3

I should begin by saying that goalie wins count as much as any other win, and that's pretty much what this was, at least the last 25 minutes.  But we'll take it.  We knew the Hawks were going to be a work in progress for a bit, and however they scratch out points is just fine by me.  It'll provide a nice base for when things start to click, if they do.

The first period was a pretty even affair, until the last five minutes (a continuing fucking theme).  The deadlock was broken when Jake Dowell took a nifty drop pass from Fernando Pisani (what?), broke down the goal line and had a centering attempt deflect off either Drewiske's or Harrold's stick and up over Bernier (who's going to be the real deal one day and I don't want to be here for it).  I thought the 1st was pretty even until the end, that won't be the last time I say that.  Sadly, the Hawks couldn't get out of it ahead after Duncan Keith simply loafed after a dump in like I do to a bill payment and let Justin Williams laser one into the top corner.  Take your time there, Duncs, no one cares really.

The 2nd again wasn't anything to write home about, except that I thought the first 15 minutes were about as defensively solid as we've seen from the Hawks this year.  It started off well after Keith -- surprisingly not trying to reenact Bobby Orr or fucking David Copperfield -- just fired one one net that Bernier left a juicy rebound to for Vik Rattlehead to pounce home.  What does this guy do wrong again?

But the period would go haywire in the last five minutes.  I can't remember who made the one turnover in the zone, but from there the Hawks spent the entirety in their end.  They got out of it alive, with the help of Marty Turco.

The 3rd, sadly, was no different, as it became the fucking Alamo in our end.  What I will say is though the puck was there most of the time, I don't remember Turco having to make too many highlight saves to preserve the lead.  Finally, when a Hawks forward actually came down to the hash for a breakout (Patrick Kane of all people, I nearly had a brain bubble), it lead to a pass to Sharp which allowed him to completely strip Matt Greene and deposit the clincher.

Observations

-The Kings are very good, and will be.  However, the difference tonight is that the Hawks have a player the caliber of Sharp and they don't.  In tonight's Indian Q&A, Quisp from Jewels from the Crown answered our question about secondary scoring by saying the Kings are heavy on secondary scoring but low on PRIMARY scoring.  They have Kopitar, but it ends there.  Well, with the bevy of chances they could have put home tonight and didn't, that makes a lot of sense.  The Hawks barely had any in the 3rd, but one fell to The Shooter.  Game. Over.  The Hawks have been outplayed for a lot of their games, but have come out with a fair return of points because they have Sharp, or Hossa, or Toews.  And that's perfectly legal.  Most teams don't.

-Well, the difference was that and Turco.

-Going along with that, it's time we simply mention Sharp as one of the best goal scorers around.  Maybe not a Malkin, Crosby, Ovechkin, or a Stamkos (yes, Stamkos).  But in the class after that for sure.

-Duncan Keith is on drugs.  I don't know why he's attempting most of the crap he is, but he's got to stop.  Every time he tried a blind, backhand pass in his own zone, Quenneville should instruct that some of his hair be removed by blowtorch.  Knock it off.  And I don't want to hear about he's playing with new players, because he's still playing with banky Seabrook.

-I don't know how hard it can be to explain to forwards to stay in their zone for breakouts, but clearly it's not getting through.  If they don't fix this by December, McClure will be dead.

-One major problem?  The Hawks d-men aren't jumping into the play.  There are myriad reasons for this, but from what I can tell the Hawks are rarely carrying the puck into the offensive zone.  This seems to stem from them not breaking cleanly from there.  Watch them, and all those little touch passes that used to connect from their own half-boards to a forward headed out of the zone miss by a small margin now.  The puck may get out, but not on a stick.  The Hawks also fail to clear their zone at every opportunity.  When they do gain control it is after the opponent has had time to set up a blockade in the neutral zone, knowing we don't have the system together to get through cleanly right now.  Will this change?  I hope so, think so, but don't know so.

-Hossa left in the 2nd with an apparent upper body injury, so I can only assume his arm fell off.

-Stalberg scored, had the second best CORSI on the team, and for that barely played in the 3rd despite being down Hossa.  I give up.

-Skille didn't do much on the top line, but I think it's worth more time.

Player of The Game

Turco, and I'm too tired for a photo or a joke.  Night

Question
If they don’t fix this by December, McClure will be dead.

Is this a BCS-style threat, or a medical complaint? I feel like it should be written in letters cut out from magazines.

Not to worry

if Hossa loses a limb he merely grows back a new and more powerful one overnight.

A few thoughts

- Turco was a god out there tonight. I hope that somebody in the locker room bought that man a beer after the game.

- I thought that Seabrook had a good game tonight. I admit to laughing when he laid that dude (I think it was Richardson?) out in the second. His communication with Turco is also visibly improved.

- I am not sold on the ‘Skille on the top line’ experiment. He made lots of rookie mistakes tonight, most of which the Captain or Sharp was able to cover for, but it killed their offensive momentum. Not saying he’s not a top-line guy some day, but I’m really not sure it’s this day.

- Passing was atrocious in this game. I partly blame the new line combos, since passing on the PP and PK (which used the same units we’re accustomed to, for the most part) was generally fine. The whole team just looked like they didn’t know where their linemates would be in 5-5 play.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Oct 28, 2010 3:49 AM CDT reply actions

Is the piss poor passing

due to a lck of practice or a lack of effort? I know it’s easy to blame the new linemates, but it’s happening to the vets too. It always seems as if the our opponents have an extra attacker.

by radguy213 on Oct 28, 2010 6:32 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

i think it’s a lack of familiarity. even within a system each player is going to be in different places at different times and react differently. as lines play together more and more they’ll develop a feel for where the person is and more importantly where that person is going to be. a lot of the little missed passes were due to that imo.

by modnar on Oct 28, 2010 10:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Matchups

I thought it was interesting that Kopecky/Hossa/Brouwer drew the Kopitar assignment. It sort of changes what type of line the Kane/Bolland/Stalberg is expected to be, unless Q feels the Stoll/Smyth/Williams line is their “top” line. And with Kopecky having the highest Corsi it does indicated they did some things well. Although I think it is somewhat inflated by the two PPs in a row with basically the same people out there for 4 minutes.

by Kev623 on Oct 28, 2010 6:41 AM CDT reply actions

Hawks have played ones against ones...

… for pretty much the whole season. Hossa and Toews have taken on the checking role for the Hawks this year. When they split, he gave it to Hossa.

Bolland’s line has NOT been a checking line. He has gotten some secondary minutes against the other teams number ones but it hasn’t been his primary responsibility this year. So yea I’m thinking, Q was trying to match Kane against a non scoring opponent line…

by DaleHalas on Oct 28, 2010 10:02 AM CDT up reply actions

You might be right

But I’m almost positive that when they played Vancouver Bolland’s line was out against the Sudin line for most of the game. If I remember correctly, they only had 4 shifts that didn’t match up against the twins.

by Kev623 on Oct 28, 2010 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions

matchups

In the Canucks game against H. Sedin 5on5:

Toews: 7.2 minutes
Bolland: 5.0 minutes

That was actually the most equal game they played. Most others Bolland has only played a couple of minutes against the other teams number one line. Otherwise it has all been Toews…

by DaleHalas on Oct 28, 2010 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough, but I think this is to some extent depending on how you want to look at it. I don’t think Q wants Bolland’s like to be playing the same number of minutes as the other teams top lines. So he only had 12 minutes of 5v5 time vs Toews 18. It makes sense that the Toews line would be the other matchup line. But there is the intent to have Bolland out there against the other teams top lines, or at least in this game.

I love Turco's interviews.

When asked about constantly being on his back:

I’ve come to the conclusion that Turco’s at his best when he’s got an ass in his face. The clear as day and soft shots he lets in just don’t smell the same.

Seems like they have bought into all the hype about how great they are. Time to get back down to basics, boys.

Also, as mentioned above, the passing sucks. It has sucked for the most part throughout each game so far.

I didn't get to watch the game

first one this year….but i heard that for a while, the Hawks completely shut down the Kings in the 2nd period…my bro told me that for like the first 13-14 min the Hawks held the Kings to one shot on goal in the second, then they decided to crap the bag…I’m sure not having Hoss out there hurt them a bit,but I am still glad to see that they won a tight game….

Any other insights about the game? Were the Hawks Jeckel and Hyde again?Looking very good at some points, and then very bad during other moments?

by Special Agent Dale Cooper on Oct 28, 2010 7:15 AM CDT reply actions

Pretty much.

They looked good for the first 15 minutes of the second, total domination on a pair of powerplays, but after that couldn’t seem to clear their own zone if you’d held a gun to their heads. The third was basically Turco doing cartwheels in goal to make sure LA didn’t get another point.

I have to admit that

I am enjoying them too….however, donno what they will turn into…Stalberg has score 3 goals already,I’m sure if he had more playing time he would have another goal or two,but the way i look at it is he is on pace for about a 20 goal season, which would be pretty good…Skille had 6 hits last night,I really like his physical presence on the ice, reminds me a bit of Ladd, though it seems he is quicker than Ladd…..but Ladd had the experience and hockey smarts that SKille doesn’t have, but hopefully will get with some time

by Raditzzzz on Oct 28, 2010 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Not really sure what you guys are watchin'

Sorry but Skille has been, imo, the biggest disappointment so far. I thought he was going to step right in and take over that Versteeg role on the team. It’s not that he isn’t as offensively gifted as Steeger, it’s that he appears absolutely lost on the defensive end. Right now he just looks like a 4rth line energy guy, out there.

Stalberg on the other hand, well, it’s more about fit. The Hawks need a guy to provide power coming from their LW opposite Kane. They don’t need a 6’ 3" finesse guy.

These two have more experience (and maybe even talent) then the guys behind them in Rockford, but Beach and Makarov’s games seem to be better suited for what the Hawks actually need. The S kids might still have some time to establish themselves, but I’m not sure they have the entire year to “fill a role” on this team…

by DaleHalas on Oct 28, 2010 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions

not sure why...

anyone would think Skille would take over Versteeg’s roll on this team. I think most people knew that Skille would be weakest in his own zone. It’s been one of the bigger complaints about him. His hitting has been nice to see, although I agree that he looked dazed on both sides of the ice last night.

it’s also not like Versteeg has been seen in Toronto up to this point… One goal, one assist and a -4 for a +4 team. Viks and Skille have been a combined -2 with three goals and two assists.

by aeroplane on Oct 28, 2010 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Why think Skille would take over Versteeg’s roll on this team.

Uh, ‘cause if he is going to make the NHL he’s got to. He certainly isn’t going to replace Hossa or Kane…

by DaleHalas on Oct 28, 2010 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

they’re completely different players.

The comparison is pretty silly. I’ve really liked Skille’s game when he’s been physical and drawing penalties. He’s been effective on most nights.

by aeroplane on Oct 28, 2010 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions

but he might replace Ladd.

I think they’re far more similar in style than Skille and Versteeg are.

by Katherine215 on Oct 28, 2010 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions

very true

I was going to say he’s sort of a Ladd/Versteeg hybrid. Skille isn’t quite as physical (or as consistent) as Ladd, but he’s got a quick component to his speed game, which is what I think has drawn multiple penalties this year.

by aeroplane on Oct 28, 2010 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions

This is all a list violation

Skille will play his own game (good or bad).

Skille is a good hockey player and will get / is getting better with NHL time, just like Ladd and Versteeg did.

by laaarmer on Oct 28, 2010 12:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I will agree with the hybrid idea

when I see more of his offensive skills and some better vision (I don’t think he sees the play all that well yet). Until then, I’m leaning more toward 3rd line grinder, with hoepfully some good offensive upside. I like him a lot, he just needs some time, I think.

by Katherine215 on Oct 28, 2010 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

3rd line grinder

like Versteeg, Ladd and Bolland. That ain’t too bad.

Stalberg Bolland Skille for 3rd line!

Stalberg Bolland Skille

Skille

I was referring more to being on the third line RW then being Versteeg. The Hawks have lost their puck possession advantage that they had last year.

by DaleHalas on Oct 28, 2010 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions

regarding the possession advantage, if they’re not on the same page as a team come mid-December, then I’ll be worried.

by aeroplane on Oct 28, 2010 7:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I wish people would get away from this notion that players from last year should be 'replaced'.

Skille is Skille. He’ll play his own game and bring his own skill set to the table. How he plays hockey has nothing to do with how players from last year played hockey, and comparisons don’t really make sense.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Oct 28, 2010 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions

The players won't be replaced, of course

but the roles those players had need to be. Sometimes it’s just easier to say, X is the new Ladd, rather than X is the new 3rd line grinder with a scoring touch; or Y is the new Madden rather than Y is the new shut down/PK/checking center.

We still need those role players, and if someone says we need a Ladd kind of guy, most people will know what that person means. Eventually, the references will stop, but we’re less than a month into the season so I’m ok with the comparisons.

by Katherine215 on Oct 28, 2010 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions

If you don't think the roles that people had on last years team need to be ...

replaced, well you are entitled to that opinion.

There are clearly missing pieces to this team. Third line checking that can remove some of that responsibility from Toews would be a good start.

Having some time of possession on the third line would make a HUGE difference, as well.

You got roles on this team to fill, last year they were filled by certain players that aren’t here anymore. They need to be replaced. The primary roles missing are on the defensive side. If you think you can replace defensive players on the team with more offensive only ones, well you are entitled to your opinion.

The Hawks were a defensive team that could score. Even if you could replace the offense that left, it’s the defense that hasn’t been replaced that matters.

I have been thinking about his contributions this year (or lack thereof) and I attribute it to the fact that he is just trying to raise awareness to hawks brass to resign Seabrook sooner than later. That or he feels that he must pick up the horrible turnovers that we lost when we dealt Steeger.

OK...

… so in the one game this year that Scott doesn’t play, you are complaining that the Hawks don’t have an enforcer? :)

Marty Havlat

Havlat’s agent is raiding hell about Marty being “underused” in Minnesota.

Hi Ogie. Buy you a soda after the game?

Hi I'm a broken record

here to report, that DK again led the team with 26 minutes of ice, had two assists, was +1, 2 takeaways, 1 block, and I thought the Kings goal might have been offsides, plus it was a top corner outta his ass hack where maybe Marty (who was otherwise amazing) went down a bit early.

i agree that Teith is at least one full level below last season, but I’d like to see what the Hawks look like for a night without him.

I thought I would be bashing my head in when Cullimore is on the ice

I have been very suprised, maybe because my standards were set so low?

In my house his nickname is Cullimore Dew

Drinking lots of it whilst watching some of these Hawks games. Missed last night, though. Thanks for the recap and insights, everyone!

Does that apply to me?

Nice! I like it, and I’m going to have to borrow it from you. Tullamore Dew is some delightful (and dangerous if not used sparingly) stuff.

I was at the game last night

Took my Dad, Papa Boldmatter, to his first hockey game. I agree on a lot of points, especially the 3rd period and Turco’s saves.

I think it was some time in the 2nd that Hendry cleared the puck out of the Hawks zone and then carried it up the ice to the Kings’ zone himself. Was I imagining that? I was fairly impressed. Also, I was sitting behind a bunch of meatheads who kept shouting to Boynton that he sucked and was terrible (even when Boynton wasn’t on the ice) which made me like him out of spite and the need to be contrary.

it's entirely possible this isn't sarcasm

by boldmatter on Oct 28, 2010 10:34 AM CDT reply actions

Hope Papa Boldmatter enjoyed himself. Yes, the Hendry rush up ice was real, and not a figment of your imagination. I agree, it was impressive…Foley and Edzo seemed impressed as well.

he did!

his exact words were “I had a great time, it was very enjoyable. I’ve never seen that many white people at a sporting event in my life.” (we’re from Los Angeles)

Glad I hadn’t imagined Hendry’s rush, because it was one of the things that stood out.

That was a nice run up the ice by Hendry.

You didn’t imagine it. Too bad he didn’t get off a clean shot. A little cut left at the end might have helped to finish it off.

definitely a shame

and this would be an example of how your comments only contain 83% Badgers by volume. Sometimes you go entire comments without bringing them up once!

I don't think I mentioned them once yesterday.

I’m trying to bring my UW references down to 80% by volume. I refuse to change my moniker though!

I thought the game

was just (dare I say it?)… boring. Neither team was playing up to it’s potential and both seemed to be going through the motions and lacked passion.

I’m thinking about springing for tix at some point this season and am glad it wasn’t last night.

by hawkeytalk on Oct 28, 2010 10:37 AM CDT reply actions

i was too annoyed and bothered to be bored.

I also thought LA played a very solid game. Turco played well and had help from the strategically placed goal posts.

by aeroplane on Oct 28, 2010 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

it felt very slow.

I caught myself checking the game clock a few times in the 3rd and couldn’t believe it wasn’t closer to the end. Though maybe I just wanted the awful lack of puck possession to stop blinding me.

Last night's Indian

I’m a little worried. My wife joined the bandwagon last year and has really gotten into the games. She doesn’t scream or anything because she’s still learning the nuances of the game, but the fact that her name is Tracy makes me think Sam might be talking her a little bit. She is pretty cute, but there’s a ring there guys!

bandwagon fan, eh?

I wish my wife would have jumped on the wagon.

She paints her nails on game nights and only reacts to player names she thinks are “cute”. She liked Niemi because she thought I was yelling “Me-ami” (spanish pronounciation of Miami) and she currently likes Turkey, Sharpie and Soupy.

Ha.

Just tack more y’s onto players’ names and you’ll get her to like more of them. Come up with cute pet names for the entire roster, and you may be able to convert a fan.
