Hossa Out A Couple Weeks, Second City Staff Hiding Behind Couch
Per Jahns, Coach Q has told the media that Marian Hossa will be out up to a couple weeks, which isn't great news but isn't the worst it could be either. Apparently Dave Bolland also missed practice, but no one noticed. The schedule in the next 10 days would lead one to believe the Hawks could survive this, especially if Campbell returns Saturday. The Hawks see the Oil, Wild, Rangers, whatever it is parading around as the Devils right now, Thrash, Oil again, Phoenix before a trip to Smashville that Hossa may be back for. Other than the Preds, none of those teams are playing well.
More line shuffling, yay!!! At practice today Vik Rattlehead was skating with Toews and Sharp, which I'm actually quite curious to get a look at. Kane was moved up to skate with Kopecky and Brouwer, and with Bolland out I can't tell you what's going on after that. I would imagine there would be a call-up, but Jahns already has dampened the calls for Jeremy Morin, who is hurt anyway. Expect Pirri or Brophey to be back, with possibly Ben Smith an outside shot. Igor Makarov will need a road map in his own end before he ends up here, and Kyle Beach is either to expensive or too insane or quite possibly both.
What will have to happen is Kane and to a lesser extent Toews will have to come out of hiding to pick up the slack, and that's not unreasonable to think it will happen. Oh won't this be fun?
That is all.

Its Morin....not Moran.
Also, this isnt pansy NBA basketball. You can just throw a 12 year old out there and expect him to light it up.

I’m undecided on Beach. The last thing we need right now are unnecessary penalties and players who are not defensively responsible (not saying Beach is or isn’t).
I’d rather see Stalberg and Skille get some more ice time before putting Beach there.

He would be my first choice too
Mainly from curiosity, as he didn’t play much in the preseason so I haven’t seen much of what he can do. Though maybe that’s a sign of his skills? But you don’t score 15 goals with the dreadful Oilers out of luck, do you?
by Katherine215 on Oct 29, 2010 9:12 AM CDT up reply actions
That's my thinking
It’s not like anyone was carrying him
My hatred of the Canucks is matched only by my love of drinking.
Potulny...
He would have to clear re-entry waivers. I’m not sure they want to risk that to bring him up for a couple of weeks. So. there are other guys that are currently exempt that might get called up first…
He cleared them going down though.
If they were concerned about losing him because he’s so valuable, I’d think his value would then say he’d already be with the team.
and who’s to say whoever comes up won’t play well enough to stay and force someone else back down?
by Katherine215 on Oct 29, 2010 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions
Not the issue
A re-entry waiver claim means you have to pay half of his salary for potentially the rest of the year.. That directly cuts into your payroll room/salary cap space.
I’m thinking potentially saving their payroll room is more valuable then having Potulny up for a couple of weeks…
I understand how it works.
My point is that no other team wanted him when he went down. yes, it’s different now that we’re into the season, but I guess I’m just not seeing how you think there would be such a demand for him.
We’ve already called up Cullimore who was also making league minimum and had to clear waivers. It’s not impossible Potulny would come up is all I’m saying.
by Katherine215 on Oct 29, 2010 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions
uh no,
Cullimore didn’t have to clear waivers. Play in the minors last couple of years, not play 40 games in the NHL last year or 80 games in the last two and you don’t have to go through re-entry waivers.
Potulny played in 40 plus games last year so he does have to pass through re-entry waivers.
As for why people might take Potulny now? Well on re-entry he is half price. And you can stick it to the Hawks salary cap, as well…
And as for why the Hawks wouldn’t take the chance it is because it is NOT worth the risk. Why risk 250k less in your limited salary cap space just to get Potulny for a couple of weeks. Better to wait to the end of the year when the risk is much less…
oh, my bad on Cullimore.
I think if they wanted him up here, they would recall him and take the small risk another team would grab him. evidently they don’t, as Smith has already been recalled so it’s a moot point now.
by Katherine215 on Oct 29, 2010 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions
small chance on a big risk...
is different then a small risk. If you have a lot of cap space then it is a small risk.
If you don’t have a lot of cap space then even a small chance something happens is a big risk.
Actually, I think Potulny would get the call if it wasn’t for the cap space issues…
We don't like the boneheaded penalties Beach brings or his cap hit.
And he’s not such a fabulous player that Pirri, Brophey, or Potulny can’t step in ably to do the job for half the price.
by spokeinthebandwagon on Oct 28, 2010 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions
Id like to see Potulny get a look. I would guess that he is next in line… Then again I thought they’d probably give him a look before Pirri or Brophey.
This keeps Sharp on the wing for sometime I would think as well right? Could move Bolland #2, Pirri/Brophey/Potulny #3 center & Dowell #4. Although Bolland is on everyones shit list, this is what he’s getting paid for.
"...can i have a glass of whiskey and a slice of bread?"
I really don't know much about the cap
But if Hossa is injured don’t we have an allowance that would allow us to go over our cap to bring someone up?
Only if he gets put on long term injured reserve.
And he won’t be, not if he’s only supposed to be out a couple weeks.

For all our smart ass remarks - god bless that kid!

I thought Kopy had one of his best games of the season
Not points-wise obviously, but he seemed comfortable with the puck and even made a few nifty maneuvers to get around a couple of players at one point. He had more energy than most of the players on the ice combined and was really solid.
I thought him at center would be terrible but he did a good job, even though it’s only a small sample size. It’ll be interesting seeing how he plays centering the 2nd without Hossa there for that Slovak chemistry.
yep
He looked good. I too had my doubts about him playing center, but he did not disappoint.
Overall, he’s been one of the most solid, consistent players on the team so far this season. I don’t know if the rest of you considered him to be part of the “great Hawks core” of players (I didn’t really think of him that way, honestly), but I sure am fucking glad he’s on this team.

this
the consistency especially. I’m neither a Kop apologist nor a hater, but he’s definitely earning more of my respect.

If there's a bright side to this
it’s that over the next two weeks, the Hawks have 7 games. They play the Oilers twice, the Wild, Rangers, Devils, Thrashers and Coyotes. All of these teams currently have worse records than the Hawks. As of right now, the Rangers are the only team above .500. With Hossa’s absence and less than good opponents, I think this would seem like a great time for some players to step up their games.

Intrigued by Stals with Toews and Sharpie.
Isn’t Stalberg usually on LW, though? Swapping up with Toews and Sharp would put him on the right. Unless they move Sharpie, which at the rate he’s been scoring, no.
I like Kaner with Brouwer, who is willing to step in and interfere when Kaner’s getting pushed around. Jahns and Kuc seem to think that Stals and Skille are swapping places, which would make the third line Skille (RW), Bolland, Bickell? (he played LW on the fourth last night, and has played with Bolland before). The only thing that really scares me is that we may see more of the John Scott experiment, either on forward or D, if the Hawks choose to save cap space and not call someone up, or if Q sits the call-up. Ugh, please no.

First off where genuinely fucked, but it could be worse right? We could be the Leafs.
Laying all jokes about the turds from Southern Ontario aside, the ’Hawks are deep trouble without Hossa in the line-up unless Dave Bolland steps it up again. Can he do it? Time will tell but he and Kane need to stop being a total mindfuck on the ice on a consistant basis. Both of them have been paltry.
More ice-time for Toews? Something has to get him going into full War God Gear. He’s been solid, but shouldn’t we get a little more from a guy that just won everything known to mankind last season?

39 years of pain (1971 loss to Habs) vaporized by one OT goal.
No, he's fully aware
I told him back in June that I would never call him hawks_ _ again
Don't feed the scrubber. It just encourages him.

i'm not worryd
Dunc and Seebs have had to carry a big load so far.
now it’s the turn of our core forwards to step it up. I expect they will.
We like our people.
Expecting is one thing, knowing is entirely another.
Bolland, Kane, Keith, and Toews have been far from their best and need to be during this stretch. If they don’t, this season could spiral downwards and quickly. If they do, then the ’Hawks are in good shape and will be better ’cause of it.
To win our best need to be our best, and so far they haven’t. Not even close. Sharp, Hossa, Turco have been the one’s leading with timely contributions from Kopecky, Stalberg, and Boynton. That’s isn’t going to cut it in the long run.

It's been a long journey but in the end it was all worth it, and I wouldn't have ever changed a thing. The feeling is so surreal, yet so real.
I don’t think Seabrook has been getting enough credit this year. He’s really working for his next contract and might be the reason why he’s been our best defenseman.
I also don’t think the season will spiral downwards unless we have an entire season of sustained injuries. At that point, there’s not much you can do, but I highly doubt Toews, Keith or Kane will continue to play far below their previous standards. Fact is the team still needs to figure themselves out.
Anybody know
why Barker isn’t dressed for MN?
Nothing to panic with!!!!
Just because Hossa is out doesnt mean the rest of the Hawk is Fck! Q Im sure have to push these boys potential to step it up. you still have JT and Kaner yet to come out of the closet. And the other newbies blending in. BC will be joining in the elite soon. Im sure it’ll bring some energy. Lets all be positive less to say.
I knew they were gay...I just knew it.
Drunk posts are funny. I’m positive less to say for sure out of the closet.

Nothing is fucked here dude, nothing is fuuucked
My hatred of the Canucks is matched only by my love of drinking.

c'mon
you’re being v e r y “un-Dude”
"It's The Chicago Blackhawks, man." ~ Jeremy Roenick, June 9th, 2010.
he’s injured right now with a minor back injury and is playing like crap. He’s the one guy underperforming right now (1g, 1a, -4). Ladd on the other hand is a beast: 4g, 10a, +4. Buff is at 3g, 4a, -4. No other ex-Hawk is above 2 points on the season, although Sopes is a +3.
Laddy !
One guy on here was quoted as saying IIRC, Ladd will be back before the deadline.
Just win the next game...!
he was traded, not sent to the minors
we don’t really have cap space for him now (which is why he got traded to begin with)
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
Ladd will be back here unless Atlanta is on the mix to make the postseason (which they could given the East). It’s not surprising that Ladd has performed well in ATL due to the fact that he has the likes of Evander Kane, Bryan Little, and Niklas Bergfors to complement him.
Versteeg has nobody except Kessel and even then. Kessel is just a shooter and not a play-maker nor does he ever venture in his own end. A one-trick pony that wasn’t worth giving up Tyler Seguin and another top pick again this season.

who do we get rid of to get him back?
I’m just not seeing it

Love to have Ladd back but...
if the Hawks make a move sometime later in the year, I would think it would have to be at center. Just don’t see the Hawks giving up assets to get Ladd back for the remainder of the year.
Now for a center? Yea, I could see them trading assets…
yeah...
Ladd is a $2.3 million cap hit. Would be very difficult to make work.
Although it’s highly unlikely, one way to make it work would be to ship out Bolland and a prospect for Ladd and permantly shift Kop to center.
You’d save on cap space by doing this and give us more options in case of injuries.
Dunno about that either
If bolland never comes back from… wherever the hell he is now, we won’t want him, but neither will anyone else.
If he does… do we want to deplete our depth at center for ladd? i mean we have two wingers who are posing as centers for us.
i'm certainly not advocating...
for this move to be made. Merely throwing out hypotheticals.
I would prefer Bolly to quit pulling a Johnsson and help us become a better team.
I'd happily take Kessel
great player and should help Toronto get to the top of the East in a few years time. btw, both Steegs and Kessel are RWs. They won’t play on the same line.
but to your other point, I’m sure Burke would rethink that trade knowing they’d get the #2 pick in the draft. What shit luck.
Steeger and Kessel actually started on the same line
at the beginning of the year, but Steeger’s slow start got him demoted to second line while Kulemin got a shot at first.

interesting...
I was thinking it would make most sense having them together. Steegs is a two-way forward, so he could make up for Kessel’s defensive liabilities.
Was steegs playing the left wing?
I didn't actually watch the games
but I’m assuming that’s where he ended up. He seems a little more flexible than Kessel.
