Gettin' It Done Is Job One: Hawks 3 - Wild 1

These days, with the injuries and roster turnover and hectic schedule, I'm going to take wins wherever I can get them.  So while the passing from the defensive zone on out is still dodgy at best, and the Hawks are still struggling at times with faceoffs, and a couple other warts, tonight's a win, and that's what really matters.  To the points...

-I guess I'm being hypocritical when I say everyone should be patient while this team shakes out over the next  month or so, and then flip my lid when line changes and or scratches and or tactical decisions don't meet my liking.  After all, Coach Q is probably figuring it all out with us.  And he's not being helped by all the injuries.  (Best Stephen A. Smith voice) HOWEVAH', Ben Smith had once decent game last night against Edmonton, and that might have been enhanced in relativity to the utter horsecock his teammates were displaying.  Why is that a call to move to the top line?  On the flip side, Troy Brouwer had one bad game last night, after a string of being one of the Hawks best forwards (though the numbers might not bare that out).  Why is that a call to be demoted to the 4th line to start?  Thankfully, that got sorted by the 2nd period, and guess where the first two Hawks goals came from?  Brouwer-Toews-Kane.

-Secondly, a second power play unit of Seabrook, Hendry, Potulny, Pisani, and Brouwer kind of defies explanation.  Yes, there are injuries and yes, thankfully not another forward on the point.  But why can't Skille and Stalberg slot in ahead of that joke?  Stalberg can even create his own shot.  Whatever, I'm just going to drive myself nuts, and I'll worry about this when everyone's healthy.

-Right, something positive....Boynton was not awful.

-Did you know Patrick Sharp leads the league in shots?

-While the passing was still woeful at times, at other times it was good enough to allow Duncan Keith to join the rush, a sight we've seen around these parts about as often as a functional brain running for any political office these days (attention: that's not a right wing or left wing joke.  I think all of us will agree that there are simply a bunch of boobs running for everything).  Both Hawks goals were created this way.

-CORSI.  Brouwer and Keith stand out, and generally when Keith stands out, the Hawks win.

-It kind of hurt me to watch Martin Havlat tonight.  For his three years here, especially the last two, I think I was one of his bigger defenders when the message board crowd called him "soft" and "greedy".  I claimed it was just injuries, not a mental block to playing hard.  I thought I was vindicated in his last year here, and batted away claims he was just playing for a contract.  I feel like now I very well may have been wrong.  Maybe it's just the frustration of playing for a losing team, but I doubt it.  Havlat floated around the ice tonight with all the interest of barely awakened sloth (though sloths are in a perpetual barely awakened state, if awakened at all, but I'm sticking with the metaphor) and avoided contact like an STD.  Marty, some of us remember what you could be, and you owe it to the Minnesota fans to show them, instead of having your agent bitch for you.

-Yes, the Wild lone goal came from a Skille mistake, but I was glad to see Q didn't bench him after for it.  He's not going to totally shred his confidence yet.  That said, Skille needs to find some finish soon.

-This seems like a bevy of negative points for a win, so let me say that the Hawks defensively were good.  Turco only had a few big time saves to make, and rarely was a rebound lying around to be put home.  So that's a step forward.

That's it for now.  Enjoy your Bears-less Sunday.  Broncos +2, Jets and Pats -6 is where my interest lies tomorrow, after Liverpool bore me to tears.

Player of The Game

I've lost the photoshop, but Troy Brouwer with a goal and an assist.

Even if we would have lost tonight

I’d have been satisfied. Everybody seemed responsible with and without the puck and we played a solid game as a team. The passing was better, shot blocking was better, the hits were harder. The whole team seemed to care. I’ll take these kinds of games regardless of the outcome.

I love

how both teams combined for 2 full hours in penalties.

The Central Division is home to two of the NHL’s last three Stanley Cup Champions as well of two of the league’s newest teams, so it’s an interesting mix of teams that have had considerable success on the ice, teams in non-traditional markets that may need some additional marketing and the St. Louis Blues.

And -- note how in the 3rd toward the end of the game

there is a whole 2 seconds between an Isles unsportsmanlike penalty and a rash of penalties on both sides, including a goalie leaving the crease penalty. Briere and Carcillo get thrown out of the game with a minute left!

Briere threw a crosscheck into the face of a defenseless player right off the faceoff

He deserves a suspension, big-time. This is worse than all of these alleged “hits to the head”… this was totally premeditated and unnecessary.

There is a completely unsubstantiated rumor that Nielsen told Briere to stay off the highway referencing a car accident he was in earlier this year that almost killed Briere’s son. We’ll never know if it is true or not, Briere threw a cross check, but it didn’t hit him in the face. Briere deserves a game, maybe 2-3. Carcillo’s first fight that game is up on puck daddy and it was a doozie from both sides.

I wonder how this got called

The NHL does not have a “Triple Minor” Penalty provision, and only four penalties can result in a Double minor, roughing NOT being one of them [Rule 18 Table 4].

I could find references in a few different leagues of this happening in the past, 3 x roughing & GM, so it is not unprecedented in Hockey, but do not recall it in the NHL, and am curious of how this one was called. Was it roughing against 3 different players, or two players after a in-play roughing? huh.

Brouwer photoshop and a story...

I was working on a new photoshop technique this evening during the game (having an image come out of a photo in 3D) and needed a guinea pig. My wife was sitting next to me and asked why I chose this photo of Brouwer. I told her last year during the playoffs, most of the time and during the entire Sharks series, when I photoshopped a player he scored during that or the next game and I figured I’d try to jump start Brouwer’s game.

Now I’m not superstitious, but as I was in the middle of working on this, T-Brouw scored. We had a good laugh at the irony coincidence. The effect didn’t turn out as well as planned, but here it is…

but I meant the result in your story (Brouwer scoring). Too funny you just said Skittles. That’s what mom thinks Skille’s name really is.

Number one sign of a crappy goaltender: he keeps telling the Goal Judge to "Get ready!"

by stacie7 on Oct 30, 2010 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Seems like an easy effect to pull off.

Just take out some of the background surrounding the object you want to appear like it’s popping out (in this example, the ground under the frog’s left hind leg). The rest of the object should stay in the picture, which is why the Brouwer pic looks odd. He has both his leg and upper body sticking out. To see what I mean, just scroll down on the page until his upper body is cut off by your internet browser and you can only see his legs. It suddenly appears like there’s a 3D effect going on.

by Ban on Oct 31, 2010 12:05 AM CDT up reply actions

in addition to what Ban said

I thought the black border threw me off as well, a little bit. Actually you can probably extend the ice to cover his feet too and then have him pop out like he’s standing up, haha. Well. Maybe. I don’t actually know for sure. I’m only here to comment. :|

Can you start photoshopping Versteeg sometime Tuesday pls?

by chiblackhawks on Oct 31, 2010 8:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I didn't like the original effect, so I added shit like the border

Here’s a better one. I just had too much of Brouwer sticking out of the photo. If Skille scores next game, I guess I’ll have a new responsibility.

So Versteeg for the game against Washington? I might be convinced to do that. Send me a photo?

Hammer

HIs -8 is atrocious. His play has been better and while he had some misfortune early in the season, he’s missing 51 more than I ever thought he would.

This is a guy most of us lay off on, but he needs to start generating some offense. Even a point every 3-4 games would be welcomed.

by aeroplane on Oct 31, 2010 9:45 AM CDT reply actions

Hjalmarsson will never be a high-end offensive producing defenceman, but more of a solid defensive defenceman. I don’t think anyone here should be alarmed with his -8 rating at this point as he’s had a plethora of defensive partners; and for that he does miss Campbell based on familiarity.

He seemed much more at ease last night. What attributed to that? I don’t know, but being paired with Cullimore all night really seemed to help a lot. Personally, I thought that was Hjalmarsson’s best game all season to date.

Seems like at the beginning of the season

Hjammer had mentioned wanting to step up his offensive game, but it almost seems like after what’s gone down this season he’s really had to rein that in. I think I’ve seen a few times this past week where he’s thought about jumping into the play but just held off instead.

As for Cullimore, he even bailed Hjammer out once last night! Maybe he’s an okay fit huh…

by VerStig on Oct 31, 2010 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Finsh means making things happen...goals have to be scored off his efforts...there is a bottom line.

by HjammerTime on Oct 31, 2010 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions

A couple different things, I think, depending on who uses the term

Getting close for the shot when possible (more precisely: shooting from high-probability areas, including but not limited to in close rather than from further back where the goalie has a better chance of seeing it and making the stop), making for the net and trying to stuff rebounds should the first shot not go in, reading his scouting material on the goalie and then successfully placing the puck in known weak areas. Pretty much the things that good goal scorers do to, well, score goals.

Wholly toledo hockeyfans!!!

That was one interesting game between Flyer and islander 2hour worth of penalties. Rivalries is the best games to watch. NY and Philly cities have been rivals in every sport event in both their cities. At least in the 23rd of January we can take advantage of penalties imposed on Flyers in as many PPs as we can get. Its going to be a very classic game. A rematch of this yrs Stanley Cups game. Carcillo is going to be their agitator who hold no class. But gotta love em for the excitement of the game in the game rematch next yr.
