Purgatory: Hawks 3 - Preds 3 (Preds win barrel-fish shooting competition 1-0)

"We feel neither highs nor lows."

"What's that like?"

"Meh."

That's kind of where I'm at tonight.  There was some good, some bad, a lot in the middle, and the Hawks are left with a point.  It's maybe what they deserve.  Certainly no more, but probably no less.  Anyway, because we all saw it, it's Saturday night and I'm on Indian duty, I'll just do the bullet points.

  • You knew exactly what would happen as soon as the Hawks sleepwalked through their last power play in the 3rd.  Though Pat Foley called it an excellent kill, it wasn't anything resembling that, but once again the Hawks top players on the big white cloud that John Cale talks about (obscure!).  If the Hawks are going to continually be let down by their gamebreakers, send us all a memo because they will continue to be El Screwed.  It's also time to boot Keith off the top unit and replace him with 51 Phantom.  I'm sure Campbell can just as easily ping shots off shin pads no more than five feet in front of him.  Keith is providing no breakout, no entry, no first pass, and no scoring threat on the man-advantage.  He just keeps my hanging on, Lou Reed.
  • For someone who takes 5-on-3's so seriously, why does his team suck at it?  Once again Keith and Sharp lined up at the wrong points to not provide them with any one-timers from passes that would make the goalie move across his crease, they didn't move the puck near quick enough, and only took shots when Rinne was already set up.  Their one chance came when Sharp, Toews, and Kane finally figured out to move it quick, only for it to dribble through Kane legs.
  • This Keith-Boynton pairing is a disaster.
  • On the plus side, the bottom six continues to at least keep the Hawks in games.  Skille finally scratched tonight and was the Hawks best forechecker again.  Though Stalberg should get out to Franson a bit quicker on the 3rd goal, he scored a beauty.  Jake Dowell is growing the gap for how much he's an improvement on Colin Fraser every game.  Bryan Bickell....well, he hit somebody at least.  And got Weber off the ice for four minutes.  We'll take whatever.
  • Troy Brouwer is kind of killing me.  He's not physical, he's not getting to the net, he's not getting open for chances.  Q is actually giving him a lot of leeway by getting him back on the top line, but we can't see why.
  • Oh, and get Kopecky off my plane and off my power play.
  • Though Kane totally fell asleep on Shane O'Brien for the first Preds goal (christ you'd think you could smell the booze trail to know where he is), after that he was pretty active in his own zone.  Next to nothing in the offensive zone, mind, but half the equation is better than none of it.
  • They can stop feeding me this line that Hossa's healthy.  He had a chance in OT where normally he would have lowered his shoulder and gone right to the net and there's few in the league who would be able to do anything about it.  Tonight he got pushed to the end boards.  Less than encouraging.
  • Hammer had another strong game, as did Campbell.
  • Stalberg trailed in the ice time tally, but that might have had something to do with all the special teams play in the 3rd.
  • Kopecky gets a shift in OT but Skille doesn't, eh?  Okay...
  • I've listened to Preds fans tell me how important Patric Hornqvist is, and I've seen the numbers, but tonight was the first time I saw it on the ice.  Though he's unquestionably a penis, he does get to the net and win battles on the board.  Still should have gone for punching Cullimore.
  • Oh, and how you miss Erat's dive after Kane TOOK THE PUCK is beyond me, but ruined any chance of the Hawks winning in OT.  Which they should probably do more often, because Turco is not breed a lot of confidence in the home run derby.
  • Other than that though, they only got there because of Turco's work early in the first period and on that kill in OT.
  • Dave Bolland won half his faceoffs!  Did he do anything else?  No!
  • I think that's it for tonight.  Do not forget to join us tomorrow at The Bottom Lounge after the game with your Indian as it gets you a free libation!  Don't say we don't ever do anything for you.

Jake Dowell

now is up to 7 pts, almost half of Fraser’s total from each of the past two yrs, plus he is a +4. I was concerned about him prior to the season, but so far he has proven me wrong. I’m liking him more every game.

I loved Turco's impression of a statue in the shootout.......

I mean, can you at least move one muscle on that first shot? He curled up in a ball on the ice, the only thing missing was Turco sucking his thumb.

And Sharp at 27% on the SO is our third best option? Pathetic……

by frictionjane on Nov 13, 2010 10:43 PM CST reply actions

You're totally right man.

This game was Turco’s fault. The “core” made it real easy on him going 0 for 3 in the shootout.

by Ban on Nov 14, 2010 12:07 AM CST up reply actions

You’re right. Not moving at all is a great strategy when playing in a shootout. I don’t think anyone was blaming Turkey for the loss, he had a good game, but you have to make an attempt. Don’t make a bs copout excuse for the guy. Yeah the top six did nothing, but that doesn’t let Turk off the hook in the SO.

Ok, bud

I’d listen to your opinion, but I’m afraid you’ll tell me that Turco was awesome tomorrow.

The top 6 sucked. Turco kept us in the game and outperformed Rinne. When your best shooters can’t manage even one goal in the shoot-out and shoot the puck where Rinne has been strong all game, the loss isn’t on your goalie. It’s on the shooters and the coach. Turcs let in 1 goal. That’s not bad, any way you slice it.

by Ban on Nov 14, 2010 2:31 AM CST up reply actions

There’s no question Sharp and Kane should not be out there in the SO, but please. Cal fricken O Reilly? Please. Turco needs to stop that shit. BTW, you will never hear me call Turco awesome so don’t act like you know me. He’s lucky that I said he had a good game. I hate the guy’s style with a passion. He plays small, which is unfortunate since he is small to begin with.

What you think of him doesn't matter

It doesn’t mean a thing. At all. The point is, he’s kept the team in a large majority of the games this season. He’s done what’s been asked of him. He didn’t sign up here to shut teams out. Let’s see our 17th ranked offense start to back him up a bit.

Him playing “small” is a weak argument, because statistically, he’s been pretty solid so far. Find a better argument.

And I may not know you, but I know you change your opinion post-to-post, like your argument that Atlanta’s a good team one day, only to call them a shitty team the next.

Good lord. A sparkling 2.74 gaa and a .911 save % (which is good enough for 29th) are now solid stats. Damn, that’s right. I forgot. He wasn’t brought here to make any saves, only coast along for the ride while the defense should allow no shots to get through. I said that the guy had a nice game and that I thought he could have made a better play on Cal Naughton jr., I didn’t single him out as the reason for the loss. You did that for me.

.911 save % with the way our defense has played is not bad.

He’s laid a few eggs, but for the most part, Turkey has been very, very good.

He hasn’t been the problem, nor has he been the solution either. Turco has been very ordinary and has been money in giving up bad goals at bad times.

Have you ever played goalie in a shootout?

Let’s not forget that no Marty = no point, no OT, no shootout in the first place.

Towes: Money in the bank, but not last night
Kane: Every one on earth is waiting for the weak-ass backhand – practice something new – please!
Sharp: Fading fast – (hope this doesn’t last long)

Please try someone different (besides Towes) please?

Let’s not get too carried away with the shot total and start preaching Turco acrobatics. He was very average – again. Many of the shots were from the perimeter and weren’t very dangerous at all and should’ve been stopped by a quality NHL netminder.

Throughout the season, Turco has had an atrocious habit of looking small within his crease, last night the shootout just revealed it. I’m not sold on the guy one bit.

This is true

I’m not complaining one bit b/c of how much less he costs, but I thought when they were on, Huet and Niemi were much more able to stand tall. Turco’s been a lot more steady but I haven’t felt him to be quite as clutch, if you know what I mean.

Totally agree with Sam about Hossa

He doesn’t seem to be playing up to the caliber of the first few games of the season before the dreaded UBI. Is he not quite 100% and just playing through the pain?

I hate to say it, since I know we're all superstitious

but I’ve been preparing myself for missing Hossa for a big stretch this season since he got injured. Everyone and their mother knows it has to be his shoulder, and that probably won’t have a chance to completely heal during the season. He was noticeable staying away from board battles his first game back and now Sam mentions this. Still, Hossa at 75% is better than 75% of the team.

God have mercy on our souls.

Shoot fellas…(and ladies “tips hat” )

Caught the highlights and end of game.

Kane left OB because that is what one “Roxy regular” does for another. OB will miss on a check and let him in cold in a future game.

Not sure if it is favoritism or cronyism…just what one tippler does for the other!

But in all seriousness…what up with the guys in the tiddlywinks competition? Toews missed totally. Edzo was wondering why no shots to the glove side…

Gotta love the PbyP guys calling Erat a total diver though!

Erat did dive though

Not sure if that was sarcasm on your part, but that’s a dive if I’ve ever seen one.

The shootout attempts were shit though. That’s a fact.

by Ban on Nov 14, 2010 1:19 AM CST up reply actions

Well…I saw it as 50/50. Kane swiped at the puck and got a pice, but his stick got the skate pretty good.

I always hesitate to call people divers though. The way he was on his feet there…wide, trying to stickhandle…it does not take much. Hit you in the skate and you are probably going down.

But I have screamed “thats a DIVE” at the TV plenty of times too. ( watch the highlights of our game versus the Leafs though. Ehrhoff for us, and Kessel later for them…dramatics Meryl Streep would love )

Just take it back usually, in retrospect. ;-)

Oh, no doubt about it

Kane did trip him, but Erat did embellish as well. No way does Kane love-tapping his skate send him flying face first onto the ice.

The argument is pointless though. We killed off that PP and lost it in the shootout cuz the top players couldn’t produce. And why Q still chooses Mr. Patrick “I shoot it into the goalie’s chest” Sharp over Hossa is beyond me. Whatever. He’s getting paid the big bucks so he must be right.

by Ban on Nov 14, 2010 2:04 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah…no argument here. Saw it sorta the same way. I was just saying, from experience, when you are widened out like that, it does not take much…even a love tap!

It was not that egregious though, and it did not cost.

I thought Toews shot was a weaker one then Sharp’s. Nice poke check there by Rinne.

Ducks next…then out to visit Western Canada right? Always look forward to the Hawks visiting the most livable city in NA…

by vancitydan on Nov 14, 2010 2:15 AM CST up reply actions

That's true

The Toews attempt was weak. Sharp in general though seems to shoot right at the goalie instead of taking a chance and going either 5 hole or glove hand. The Hawks shooters have to mix it up. The goalies know what’s coming. They’re not stupid. They study the competition.

Most people on SCH seem to think the circus trip will be the turning point of the Hawks season. I don’t see it so. Nothing about the way the team has been playing so far encourages me. I hope to God I’m wrong, but I’m keeping the optimism on the lower end of the spectrum. The past 2 weeks were supposed to be easy points, yet we’re 3-6-1 in the last 10. I’m not holding my breath.

In that case - how is the draft stacking up?

It’s been a rough month – in some of these losses, we just plain sucked.
The last few games, I have seen a lot more consistency – but we have to be stronger in the third period
McClure pointed out the minutes are the key – For
example, Keith has looked a little smarter as his minutes have gone down.
This is why I do not like seeing Scott out there – it means everyone elses minutes go up, which = lead feet in the third.

YAY!

More undeserved Bickell bashing when he was easily one of the better players on the ice. You nailed it on the head there, bud.

Ditto with Bolland. He didn’t produce points, but he certainly wasn’t half as bad as the so-called “core.” For his first game back, he did an admirable job positionally, all while improving on the dot. How about we focus on the core completely sucking a sack-full of testicles?

Thank God I’m not the only one that realizes that Q is a fucking moron. Punish the players that do well, hand out ice time to those that don’t. That’s the 2010 motto. Funny thing is, in the pregame interview on the radio, he was saying how he believed the team should focus more on effort than on skill. Way to be a hypocrite, shit head.

by Ban on Nov 14, 2010 12:04 AM CST reply actions

Ditto for me on Bickell. Kid has been alright this year and has been far from the ‘Hawks problems and looked good early in the season with Sharp and Hossa. And why hasn’t that been revisited?

It wouldn’t surprise me if Q got fired before the season ended. He has this Therrien attitude about him and that (if anything else) got him in the bad books with his “core” group. It’s only a matter of time before the players get sick of the line-changing and doghouse routines before they turn on the coach. It’s very apparent that there is lack of contentment between players and coach right now as everything that Q tries off the ice looks to bring an even worse product on the ice.

by puppetmasterp on Nov 14, 2010 2:27 PM CST up reply actions

Therrien won the Prince of Wales Trophy the year before and still got the boot. Q, along with any other coach in the NHL, is not prone to being fired especially after a season that just seen the ’Hawks win the Stanley Cup.

It’s very obvious that the ‘Hawks are slowly tuning Q out as the every time he’s had a “bag skate” the ‘Hawks come out looking flat like they did against Edmonton and Phoenix. He switches up the lines and doesn’t get any better. It’s only a matter of time before it all hits its breaking point.

If this team is still under .500 around January, except changes to come. It’s easier to fire the coach than the players. And with the Cap being what it is and so many teams just under it unwilling to move players it’s the easier of the two options.

With that said, I don’t expect this team to be under .500 for much longer.

I see progress, in general

Keith wasn’t a whole lot better, or really any better, but the rest of the D seemed to progress, hammer had a monster game. The core… well, we were in this game because skille and stals stepped it up. theres a reason they aren’t top-level players – because they can’t be depended upon to produce every night.

by oregon_hawk on Nov 14, 2010 12:30 AM CST reply actions

Perhaps not produce points every night, but I do expect to produce something.

Skille has been a good energy guy. He forechecks well and seems to draw a fair share of penalties. Stals should emerge as a 20+ goal scorer, hopefully opening the ice up for teammates.

Both are young guys and honestly done a decent job. Hopefully they continue to improve.

the reason they aren’t top level players is because they can’t be depended on to produce every night – like our top 6 should be able to be.

This Crap IS really getting old

A point is better than None, But the Hawks really do need to string several 2 point efforts together in a row!

They have got to have a one!

They have scored 4 or more goals on 4 times, and over 4 once. It is the EV goals that is really hurting this team. PP is okay, PK not bad, Goal tending okay, GA/G is okay, SA/G is much better.

It is getting that 1 goal EV that is hurting. Last night on ANY of the PP [5-3 more so] would have helped. Too many games they have LOST when getting one more goal late 2nd early 3rd, probably wins it.

Skillz/Dowell/Vic as good or better then players they replaced from last year.

Bickell- so dam slow
Pisiani- getting better
Brouwer- top 6 ?
Kopecky- 3rd line checking candidate
Cullimore- help

The bad news-no alot of wins-periodic horse shit play
The good news-we are losing by the slimmest of margins-periodic flashes of brilliance from last year. Takes time to jell-many 1st year players playing full time.

"One Goal"

Also our theme is hurting us also….One Goal

We have 9 loses(OTs included) by One Goal………..One God Dam Goal…….and we are playing like horseshit….only one goal…..If and when this team jells ….

7 or 8 of our loses we were up by one goal going into the third period.

The 3rd period.....

play has seemed to have been our downfall all season. The Hawks continuously look tired and worn out and out matched in the 3rd period. Although, the top 6 didn’t do shit the entire game last night. That plus we are playing in, what so far is, the toughest division in the league. Hopefully we can get it turned around.

by JDawg84 on Nov 14, 2010 9:04 AM CST reply actions

Hawks outshot 15-6 in 3rd & OT.

And just plain out worked and out hustled in those periods.

Oh, and correct me if I’m wrong, but during the 1st & 2nd periods the Hawks seemed to have heeded some of McClure’s advice from the CI the other night and the forwards were coming back deeper into their zone and the Hawks break out from their own end was looking better. And then the 3rd period started, and right back to the “hero” passes. And we all saw the results.

I like the movie “Groundhog Day” as much as the next guy, but anytime the Hawks want to stop making me live it is fine by me.

Oh thats how it looked.

Forwards were aggressive in the first 2. Decent (not great) passing. Then the 3rd starts and it’s like ok we can fall apart now. I forget who passed it to Toews in the 3rd. He was on left and Toews was sliding in from the right. Rinne didn’t even see Toews. and the pass misses Toews. Reall?! Cmon these are the plays we need. Then they just sort of decide, we can fold it up. No energy, no mojo, no anything. Uggghhh just don’t even know what to say now.

Its getting harder and harder to defend this hockey team

Friends of other teams are starting to roll their eyes when I mention that its early and the core in intact.

I'm not so sure I believe that myself

Like I said, I have alot of personal stuff going on so I haven’t been able to catch many games (which is going to change soon)…. they looked totally out of sync last night. Thing is they have looked like this every other time I have watched them. Very little if any improvement.

i've definitely stopped saying it

seriously, defending your team is one thing. but I refuse to make excuses for them anymore when they are quite simply not showing up. And I have a great deal of respect for those guys putting in a lot of effort when their teammates don’t seem to want to.

Very annoying on a number of levels.

It probably wouldn’t bother me so much seeing the guys in all these commercials if they were still performing on the ice though.

Current NHL players can't act

Wonder how many takes it took Mike Greene to fumble his Geico lines. Taze and Laze are both pretty singularly-minded individuals, which works pretty well on the ice, not so well in front of the camera. Puck Daddy’s breakdown of the commercial is a half-decent read.

Edmonton scored two in a matter of seconds. The Rangers then decided to kick it in the ass and get two past Khabi in short fashion. My Mom said “Why can’t the Hawks do that?”

With every that has happened this early going this is the reality of the situation at hand – a win tonight puts the ’Hawks at .500 for the season 20 games in which is like being 2-2 to start the NFL season.

Lots of work ahead as nothing has been lost nor gained.

Bottom line is....

….this team is still learning to play together. A lot of the players that were traded last offseason had come up through the Blackhawks farm system together so by the time they all reached the pros, they were used to each other. This team is still molding together and its going to take a little time.
