Around SBN: Seahawks Trade for TE Kellen Winslow

Disco Inferno - Stampeders 7, Hawks 2

The Blackhawks cleary didn't give a shit during the game, so I'm not going to give a shit recapping it. Time to pass the Fuck Yous around.

Observations

  • I guess this is the primary point tonight, but we'll start with it. Seriously - what the fuck? From top to bottom, minus Jack Skille and Jake Dowell, absolutely no one gave a shit. Absolutely every 50/50 puck went to the Flames, and every single board battle was lost. Those wearing the letters were just as listless as everyone else, which is a major fucking concern. Even Turco after the 5th goal couldn't be bothered with stopping the sixth or the PAT, and had a look of disdain on his face through his mask. Whether there was a minute left or not, and regardless of if he's a veteran, I'd have put Crawford in there, just to give him a wake up call. This was a team that had lost 6 of 7, and looked pretty bad doing it. Not to mention the Hawks have paraded the Flames around like they were in a gimp suit for the last 3 seasons in their own building. Apparently everyone in white thought that those previous efforts were going to dictate what happened tonight. Not so damn much, huh?
  • Coming off an inspired performance on Wednesday against a team it's real easy to look inspired against, captain and supposed catalyst Jonathan Toews was just as wanting on the Give-A-Shit-O-Meter as the rest. As Sam pointed out, it's easy to be a frontrunning captain on a juggernaut. It's quite another to drag a team kicking and screaming by the short and curlies into being competent. Put this team on your back and carry it, slow starts be damned. It's getting late pretty early, isn't it Jon?
  • Jack Skille was the only Hawk with any effort for a full 60 minutes tonight. Jake Dowell's was there, but he left with an injury. Wonderful. Even Dowell astutely picking his spot to scrap when he did, and summarily tossing Mark Giordano couldn't put the cattle prod to this team's balls.
  • Speaking of Skille, his was seemingly the only shot that was attempted low, and wouldn't you know it, it went in. I know those scouting reports are tough to read, but even your in-game experience should have told you that high on Kipper wasn't happening tonight.
  • Tomas Kopecky's was the most egregious of the three offensive zone penalties tonight, and should earn him a seat in the pressbox tomorrow night. It'll give him more time to catch up on Hossa's accounting for the upcoming end of the fiscal year.
  • Speaking of threes, the Hawks were only credited with 3 hits. THREE. While it's a subjective stat that ALWAYS tilts in favor of the home team, the eye test doesn't deviate too far from that.
  • If I have to watch Niklas Hjalmarsson blindly throw the puck up the right boards with no one home one more time, I swear to fuck I'm going to stick my head in a microwave.
  • Put your fucking arms down, Troy Brouwer.
  • Viktor Stalberg got tossed around like a frisbee tonight.
  • ...and it was more often than not Robyn Regehr doing the tossing. Regehr was an absolute force on the back end for Calgary. I don't recall one person even coming close to winning a board battle with him.
  • Of course I had to call out Jarome Iginla in the preview, didn't I?
  • I hope the Bellagio or wherever the fuck they thought they were staying starting Sunday allows for cancellations 48 hours out.
  • If you thought tonight was bad, if the Hawks put forth the same kind of effort tomorrow night in Vancouver, they're going to get a dozen dropped on them.

This was ugly

Thought it was going to be good when Skille scored first, especially given our recent record against Calgary, but tonight’s performance was unacceptable. 3 hits??? I bet they turn it up tomorrow, since it’s against Vancouver, but that will only be more frustrating if they prove they can win when they feel like it.

I was sure Q was gonna pull Turco after the extra point

I’m glad he didn’t, but I wouldn’t have had a problem with it if he did.

Can we please go back to Keith/Seabs, Hammer/Soup, and Hendry/Boynton?

At first ...

I thought the absence of hitting was creating the appearance that the Hawks weren’t putting forth the effort. Now I’m begining to realize it’s the absence of effort that’s making them seem that they aren’t putting forth the effort. I’m really glad that they cleared that up for me.

Gonna go the positive route here

Skille was +2.

When seemingly no one else could chip the puck out of the Hawks zone, Skille fought it out himself, through some hard work and determination. The effort allowed a few Hawks a much needed line change.

Skille wad able to finish tonight. His goal was a much needed lift and came at a time that the Hawks were getting man handled. It’s just too bad he couldn’t play 60 minutes tonight.

So guys…only one question from Canuck fans?

Is that the team we can expect tomorrow? ;-)

Actually, not putting it that way, really. The Flames played their best of the season tonight. They were hungrier to every puck.

Have to agree on Turco though. How deflating is that, to see your vet goalie basically give up on the last two?

I like the B2B-ness of it is nice, but almost wishing the team’s did not play until Sunday, just to see if the Roxy effect would happen.

All kidding aside, I expect the usual Hawks/Canucks Tong War.

We get Crawford right?

A lot of bad teams

Have had there best game of the season against us. Edmonton, new jersey and now Calgary.

This team doesn’t show up on too many nights. Sometimes they wait to turn it on in the last 20, by then too late. Last night they couldn’t care less.

Who knows who’ll show up tonight. Hopefully the travel dampened kane’s birthday celebration. If not, expect our drunken point leaders to put up another dud.

by aeroplane on Nov 20, 2010 9:41 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Turco was right to not give a shit

If the rest of your team doesn’t, why should you? They’ve left him out to dry far too many times that night and I would have had absolutely no problem if he just got up and walked away from the goal mid-game.

by Ban on Nov 20, 2010 5:12 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe this is the wake up call we need

Most embarrassing loss of the season no doubt? I know getting cock whipped by Edmonton giving up 7 hurts but this just has that extra bit of sting to it if you ask me. Hopefully someone wakes up in the locker room and says “Hmm, I guess we really have to come hard every night.”

Even towards the end of last year and early start of the playoffs I sometimes felt like these guys were skating out there like they deserved to have the cup handed to them. I say get tough and beat these guys with some sticks, starve them, take away their booze…something.

Q is a fuckturd and that is all. Leaves his netminder in to die and embarrassing death and let in 7? Turco, regardless of opinion, has accomplished enough in his career to deserve a better fate from his coach. The man should look over his shoulder as the hand of the grim reaper should be close as his days as the bench boss might come to an end.

Toews shouldn’t have to carry all the expectations. Were is his help? Hossa, Sharp, Brouwer (who needs a change of scenery), and Kane (remember him?) all have played, at time, like they couldn’t care less about the outcome of most games. Duncan Keith has morphed into a billy goat as he’s been a curse on the blueline all year.

I could add more but I’ll just stop there. Something tells me though that a trade is forthcoming very soon.

Not to harp on Brouwer, but his failure to get the puck out on Hagman’s goal was absolutely pathetic, just terrible, and a good emblem for what’s been burning this team over and over again so far this year.

Anyone have team totals for turnovers-per-game so far? We have to be in the top 3 or 4 in the league. Tough to “possess” the puck when you give it away to the other team under pressure and when you can’t win board battles in the o-zone.

Brouwer is the dumbest player on the Hawks

Night in and night out, he makes several plays like that, the types of plays that make Q’s eyes roll back in his fucking head. It’s not any mystery as to why Q hates him.

I thought that his terrible turnover at the blue line in Game 1 against Nashville last year was an aberration, but now I see that it’s a habit. He makes at least one or two plays like that a game now.

I think I agree with Hawks61 up there, he needs a change of scenery. Not for cap reasons, but because he’s really hurting the team right now. Kopecky too. That line is garbage.

I will pile on

He has been absolutely lost out there. On pace for 4 goals this year after 20 last year. If this guy isn’t taking the body WHILE NOT scoring goals he is a complete waste of a roster spot.

Kopecky…..yeah he sucks ass too. Bad penalties, gets pushed off the puck easier then anyone I have ever seen that has some size. Kane is harder to take off the puck. He falls down all the time, takes bad shots and really is terrible. Always has been.

Dave Bolland…….what happened to him? Terrible this year.

Hossa/Sharp. Two very frustrating players to watch with the streaky side to them both. Tired of them not even being mentioned for stretches of games at times. They real are the epitomy of straky point producers..Sharp being the worst.

Lets face it, this team is in serious sleepwalk mode. And they will be Hard pressed to make up all these games late in the year. Needs to happen now. I just don’t see anything in 20 games plus that resembles the teamthey were even close to in the past.

it’s not early anymore……

Not happy with Pisani either

I’m not expecting him to score goals because that’s not what he was brought in here to do. But if he can only play D on the PK on not play D at even-strength that’s not enough for him to play on the 4th line, much less the 3rd. Can’t anybody get the puck out of our zone? Why is this so hard for us now?

Chemistry is Gone

To me it is abundantly clear the chemistry from last year is gone. The Blackhawks now think they are a bunch of individual hotshots and forgot how to play as a team. I always thought hockey was a team sport. If they can’t get along as a team, maybe it is time to take another dump and get rid of some of the hotshots to meld the franchise into a team again. I suspect something is happening all the way at the top, but have nothing to hang my hat on.

by aeroplane on Nov 20, 2010 9:51 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

I don’t get the sense that they think they’re hotshots, but I do think they’re struggling with their identity, obviously. They are not the team they were last year, that’s clear. We don’t know who they are ‘cause they don’t know who they are.

We’re the poster boys so far for the concept of a team being much greater than the sum of its parts. I guess we as fans are learning the hard way that it doesn’t much matter who your core is, you can’t lose 2 full lines of a hockey team and play the same way, definitely not with the same swagger. Give these guys a season together to iron it out and they’ll be back on track (I just hope we can do that while still making the playoffs) … the Cup team last year had two regular seasons of “practice” before coming together … I’m getting ready to admit that’s what’s in order here, too.

Agreed, to a point.

The loss of Steeg/Ladd/Buff/Burish on and off the ice will never be lived down. The depth of talent as well as character is all too apparent.

A circus trip result below .500 will not bode well. Let’s hope for a goddamned Awakening against the canuckleheads.

I'm sorry

but i think this is bullshit.

Kane/toews/sharp/hossa are elite players. they shouldn’t/don’t need guys like steeg/ladd/buff to produce points. This isn’t caused by trades over the offseason, this problem is caused by our top guys having their heads up their asses.

by oregon_hawk on Nov 20, 2010 12:48 PM CST up reply actions

I'm with you on this one

Stals, Skille, Dowell are stepping up very nicely. It is the Top players on both ends that are under performing, these same players who have skated together for at least 1 year through a SCF and for most the past 3+ years. Their chemistry should not be an issue, yet they are not doing what is expected and needed of them. The role players are doing fine.

Glad to see...

….. I’m not the only one pissed off. Way out here in Long Beach, CA we’re glad to see a game in the Calgary time zone, because that way we get to see the entire game after coming hom from work. And boy, weren’t we all thrilled to see this crapfest. I realize they can’t be the team from last year, but what the hell? If they’re going to mail it inthis year, please at least fake it.

Seriously, because I’m not nearly as well versed on the ins and out sof hickey as some of you, am I wrong to curse the salary cap rules here?

There’s no doubt the salary cap forced us to amke the decisions we did, but every team plays by the same rules. Two things, imo, did it in for us. First, we had a bunch of young guys all peaking at similar times with contracts coming due, and all needing pay raises at the same time as a result. We couldn’t stagger our pay-outs. And second, some contract overpayments and poor cap management to boot.

But to blame it on the cap isn’t right, I don’t think … we put ourselves there, it’s not like we just woke up to it one morning.

yeah...

i like the cap. Makes things more difficult for management and it allows for greater league parity. Baseball would be a much better sport if it had similar rules. Imagine the Yanks imploding every 3-4 years due to cap mismanagement/concerns?

I agree, I can’t even watch baseball anymore. Sure there’s an aberration here and there, but someone who’s never seen a game in their life could do well picking the playoff teams just by looking at team salaries.

I'm sick of parity

it just makes for a lot of mediocre teams. Look at the NFL for example.

by activestick on Nov 20, 2010 10:43 AM CST reply actions

I like the cap. What I hate is some of the things accompanying it like revenue-sharing. Get rid of teams like Toronto, Rangers, us, etc., having to shell out dollars to Florida and Nashville and Tampa, etc., and let the fucking teams that can’t manage a fan base die their overdue death …

If this happened there’s be 5 or 6 fewer teams in the league and mediocrity wouldn’t be a by-product of the cap.

How does it do this, in your view? I’d think the Devils and us are both good examples of cap incompetence not getting rewarded.

by aeroplane on Nov 20, 2010 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

The Devils

get rewarded for bad decisions with a top draft pick. It seems in the cap system you can’t sustain a great team because by being good you can’t afford to keep your good players.

by activestick on Nov 20, 2010 11:26 AM CST up reply actions

Still, I'm not really buying that the Hawks' problems are due...

…to the guys we lost due to the cap. Except for Ladd (who I always hated to lose) none of the other guys are exactly lighing up the league. I know that Buff is off to a great start but would he be producing like that if he was still playing forward for us?

Maybe Burrish and Fraser were great at keeping guys loose in the locker room but I don’t believe for a minute that f they were still here somehow the Hawks would be showing consistent effort.

IMO, the only really bad move that Scotty Jr. made was choosing to keep Bolland over Ladd.

With 20 games worth of hindsight, sure, I see where you could say that. But, at the time, Bolland was coming off his best stretch of games in his career and the organization has a dearth of depth at the center position.

And I have to admit that, at the time, I would probably have leaned more toward Bolland also.
I’m not necessarily ripping on Bowman for it, just saying that it was one move that doesn’t seem to have worked out.

by bluekoolaide on Nov 20, 2010 2:31 PM CST up reply actions

Bolland was kept to be the defensive pest that he was in the playoffs.

The logic to keeping Buff and Bollie was that they were playoff players.

I think Bolland has sucked shit on a stick this season so far. But I do have faith that he will be a shutdown center come playoff time. The same way he has the last two playoff seasons.

Now about getting to the playoffs…….

What they need is the desire on a nightly basis.

We aren’t to the point yet that the playoffs are a fantasy. But… we are sort of getting there soon.

We may have been fooled a bit, that anaheim and edmonton signaled a turn around for the hawks – it may not be that easy. We’ll just have to see how it goes every night.

I know it looks pretty bleak right now and they are playing like crap, but come on are you really only going to be a fan if they win? We knew it probably wouldn’t be like last year and we really need to quit making comparisons. This is a new team, it’s a new year, and there was never any guarantee that we would be a number one team.

He didn't say he wasn't going to be a fan.

In fact, it looks like he is saying he is going to watch even if they do suck. We have every right to complain about the steaming pile they drop on the ice each and every night. This shit would never happen with Detroit. Its a basic lack of effort. That is a totally different story than having a team with different, less able personal.

No fan can demand the same product as last season. We can demand the same effort.

We’re digging a hole, no doubt. But: if we get 24 points out of each of the three remaining 20-game segments, that gets us 94 points. That’s likely only 1 to 3 points shy of the 8th seed. That’s hardly setting the bar high. We have to play better hockey, ya, but 12 wins out of every 20 is within reach even if we don’t begin to play like we did last year.

But honestly, if I’m Q, I get a huge fucking poster made, wall-sized, and divide it into 4 panels; and in each panel I a separate boxscore—both Edmonton games at the UC, the Jersey game, and last night’s game. Every time the Hawks leave for the ice I unfurl it and tell them they either play like that or they don’t play like that—two options, pick one.

Personally, I'll never stop watching and rooting and hoping

But it would be a lot easier to watch if I felt like they were bringing some genuine effort to the table. I don’t necessarily mind watching them struggle while they try to figure things out but a game like last night’s is inexcusable.

by bluekoolaide on Nov 20, 2010 2:37 PM CST up reply actions

i like the poster idea

this team has burned most of its slack. projected WC standings:

6. Minnesota 101
7. San Jose 100
8. Colorado 99
9. Phoenix 99
10. Dallas 96

shooting for anything short of 100 points is chancy. 100 points means 36-18-6 the rest of the way, which is doable. anytime in the next 5 hours the boys decide they are ready is fine with me.

burned away most of its slack...

is right.

so, they need to average (exactly) 6-3-1 per 10 game sets the rest of the way? Not impossible, but fuck.

Also, I’m going to get off the stars need to step it up bandwagon. I really think it’s the mid-level players that really need to step it up. If Brouwer, Kop and Bolland could play to their potential (in a historic sense), it would do wonders for the whole team.

It was a giant pile of suck right from the get go.

Woke up this morning and my wife asks, “What’d the Hawks do last night?” (She had a really shitty week at work and turned in extra early).
I let out a disdainful grunt and reply, “Got their ass kicked. It was a giant pile of suck right from the get go. They were just goin’ thru the motions. It was an abomination unfit for human eyes. Good thing you didn’t bother stayin’ up for that mess.”
She replied, “I thought we were past that shit.” and disgustedly stumbled downstairs to let the dog out.

I had recorded the game and watched it a bit delayed. Then stopped the recording and deleted it after Calagary scored their 5th figuring that would be the final. Imagine my surprise and disgust when I see the final was 7-2 with the Flames dropping two more on ’em in the last two minutes. All I could do was laugh and shake my head.

At least they get to try and wash this away immediately. I feel like tonight’s game could really be a turning point for the season. Another lame effort & loss tonight and I really fear for the rest of the season. It could be the tipping point from which they can’t recover.
A solid bounce back effort & win and momentum can still be moving in the right directon with last nights debacle just a bump in the road.

We’ll see what this team is really made of tonight.
