Black Friday Spending Spree - Hawks 4, Ducks 1

Dudes, any time you want to box someone out in front of me, it'd be really appreciated.

Ahh, the roller coaster ride continues. With their systems seemingly purged of all the tryptophan from yesterday, the Hawks tried something different today - which is put forth an effort during the seemingly annual Black Friday matinee in Anaheim. The Ducks even sported new kinda-wretched 3rd jerseys for the occasion, but it wouldn't keep them from dropping their sixth straight.

Though the Hawks were unable to convert on an early power play, they carried the action for much of the first. A soft tripping call on-ah the Pope-ah led to an Anaheim power play goal late in the first, coming from a redirection in the slot off the stick of Dan Sexton, who tipped a one timer from the reanimated corpse of Saku Koivu. Though the Hawks trailed 1-0 after 20, they more than outshot the Ducks 13-6.

In the second, the questionable calls would continue, with Marian Hossa and Jack Skille both taking iffy penalties. The recently shitty PK actually came to life on the Hossa call, with Duncan Keith joining a rush that had been spearheaded by Patrick Sharp, and throwing a shot on Hiller that queefed between his pads to tie it. Andy Sutton took a run at Jassen Cullimore late, and Nick Boynon naturally came to his defense, yielding a late Ducks power play for instigating, which the Hawks killed off.

However, Sutton would get his, as Patrick Sharp pounced on a terrible Sutton giveaway and roofed a laser over Hiller for the eventual winner. Niklas Hjalmarsson got of the schnide with a slapper from the line after some nice footwork to create a lane for himself, and the suddenly streaking Troy Brouwer had the capper with a shot from the slot after a nice set up from linemates Dowell and Skille. Hawks 4, Ducks 1.

Observations

  • Let the goalie controversy begin. As Sam noted in the preview, and as Pat and Eddie did in the broadcast, a strong showing by Corey Crawford today (which he had) should yield a start tomorrow against the Kings. Personally, I'm all for it. I like Crawford's approach in net, and at this point in the season with the standings being what they are, Quenneville has to start banking points. Though he's a nice guy looking for his shot to win here, Marty Turco is owed nothing in regards of playing time.
  • The "traditional" defensive pairings were reinstated today, as well as Nick Boynton being taken off the penalty kill. The results were pretty apparent, as the few loose pucks that Crawford produced were quickly pounced upon. The results are also reflected in Corsi, where Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, and Bobby Ryan all found themselves in the red, while Marlboro 72 were both positives.
  • While the Andy Sutton/Jassen Cullimore/Nick Boyton tete-a-tete could have been initially called a charge on Sutton, that he didn't connect was likely the mitigating factor. It's also the factor that irritates me with Boynton's actions. There's a place to stand up for a teammate, but that's not it, and it cost Boynton 2 minutes.
  • Troy Brouwer also kinda-sorta got away with an elbow prior to his goal, but it just serves as a microcosm for what we've repeatedly said about Lowen-Brouw: he's at his best when he's taking the body.
  • Marian Hossa looked less of a passenger today than Wednesday, but the Hawks still need more from him.
  • Holy shit, Patrick Sharp a +2!
  • The second unit power play was fucking clown shoes. The first - they at least looked competent even if they didn't convert.
  • Niklas Hjalmarsson's patience on his goal can't be understated, and it's the sort of thing that I've pointed to regarding his untapped offensive upside. His comfort level in playing with Soupy is pretty apparent.
  • I'm not sure I fully understand Randy Carlyle yanking Jonas Hiller that late in the game, but Carlyle's a long-time red-ass, and it was more than likely a message to the rest of the team. While Hiller certainly wasn't the infinite abyss that he usually is against the Hawks, he can hardly be blamed for Sharp or Brouwer's goals.
  • The Hawks are now garaunteed .500 for the trip, which is decent. But a win tomorrow would make it a success. Though they lost on Wednesday, the overall quality of play has been a little bit more consistent. They'll need to ramp it up a notch tomorrow night against a for-real Kings team.
Player of the Game

We're proud to bestow what I believe is Corey Crawford's first honor here as the player of the game. Craw made 26 saves for his third win in a row, and looked very composed in doing so.

Glad I wasn't the only one that hated the penalty that Boynton took

Edzo had a fucking boner talking about how great it was that he stood up for Cullimore and sent a message to Sutton. Sorry Edzo, but Boynton’s bear hug was stupid and an easy instigator call. Patrick Sharp, meanwhile, sent the most important message to Sutton, which was “you’re not a very good hockey player.” Let’s leave the neanderthal shit at home, we didn’t need it last year and don’t need it this year.

Also, despite his pathetic whiff on a clearing attempt during the PK, Dave Bolland was actually around the puck a fair amount and even created a few scoring chances. Being on a line with Pisani isn’t gonna help his offensive game come around, though.

Finally, the top two defensive pairings are back! Why the hell did it take so long?? Now if Hendry could make his way back into the third pairing, I’ll gladly shut up about our D pairings.

Sutton completely whiffed on the hit and landed flat on his ass. No need for Knucklehead Nick to start shit, and Sharpie really made Sutton pay anyway.

yes

at the same time, players need to know that their teammates have their backs.

I understand both parts of the equation, but the team killed the ensuing penalty, made Sutton pay and then they finished off the Ducks. Turned out well, so I’m not complaining.

uhhhh

Not sure what to think of it. I know I do not want any member of the Goon squad skating for the Hawks [Yes Pronger I am pointing at you too you selfish stuck-up Fuck], but I do absolutely want players who have each others back when needed.

Perhaps the timing was not the best, but I would take this [Hawks not fighting to tie the game] over our players getting steam rolled and nothing happen. But it was still a close game, and put the Hawks on the PK and this is the part I have the issue with, the timing was crap.

He is a good defenseman

He is not the type of player I can cheer for, arrogant, self centered and it is NEVER his fault. He thinks at times he is being cute to the media by not answering their questions at all, but he is being nothing more than a Fucking Ass to the fans who may actually like to really know the who, why, when and where with their team or Hockey in general [coincidently it was his SCF press conference that I started loathing the Fucker]. Barry Bonds was great hitter, but I would also never would have wanted him on my team for the same reasons.

I'm fine with the penalty

We’ve been getting handled physically in more games this year than makes me comfortable.
Sutton didn’t connect with Cullimore, ya, but he was absolutely stoked at the chance to knock Cullimore’s consciousness into fucking outer space. He was hoping to put him on a stretcher. Any player from any team who tries to do that so hungrily to any Hawk, Cullimore to Kane, I hope someone steps up and goes ballistic. We’d be praising him if Kane had been the target; I don’t see the number being of any significance … all for one and one for all.

Crawdad

Looked great and I really like the way he battles. I think his style fits the Hawks much better. With the d-men the Hawks have, Turco’s puckhandling abilities are rendered moot. Keith and Campbell are 2 of the best skaters in the league and Turco’s want of playing the puck hinders that at times.

Crawford is playing better of late, but Turco is NOT playing bad.

It may come down to the belief not that Turco is not good, but that Crawford can help win [steal] a few games, not a bad position. I’m not thinking it is a controversy, since neither goalie has LOST a game for the Hawks, just a matter of which one can now steal a few more than the other.

No matter who they put in net, I’m not going “shit” or “hope he has a good game”, but still thinking “hope the Hawks Offense shows up to win it!”.

Turco isn't playing bad

But Crawford is playing better. That’s the difference. I said it a few weeks ago, but I do believe that by the end of the season, if we do make the playoffs, it’ll be Crawdaddy as the starter. That’s not a stab on Turco, since I believe he’s done an admirable job in front of the team, but he’s being outplayed by Crawford.

I’m pretty excited to see what Crawford can do next year as the number one guy.

Could you imagine being a Devils fan, signing Kovy, having the Contract be rejected, sign again for almost just as stupid of a price, Loose draft Picks, dress only 15 skaters, and after 23 games have only 7 wins, and have only a one point lead over the worst team in Hockey that just went to 0-11-3.

Good 3rd Period for sure

Pretty sure Foley was sauced again… He said some real stupid shit and forgot everyones numbers.

Kopecky still god awful. Get him away from Shooter. Please. Maybe put T-Brow there again… Though….

That 4th line is boss. Everytime they are on the ice they do something fantastic or hugely entertaining. That goal T-Brow scored. Fucking legit. Though sharps was a snipe and Hammer broke that dudes legs that last goal was just sexy… so very very sexy…

3rd pairing should be a rotation of Hendry, Boynton and Cullimore, who ever plays the worst has to sit out the next game and the other gets a shot. Also keep those old legs fresh.

Crawford is solid. Turco is solid. Create a goal tender contraversey to distract everyone else from their own personal problems is a great idea and I support it. TO THE MAKING UP A BULLSHIT GOALTENDER SITUATION!

But I was pretty pissed at the quality of the call yesterday. He really truly seemed out of it… not sure if it was because of the early start or what. He was constantly giggling, telling stupid stories, and mistaking Bickell for Dowell, Dowell for Kane, Turco for Toews, whatever. I feel like he’s throwing darts up there sometimes. And Eddie was no better. They both mailed it in yesterday.

Re: Hiller being pulled

I was watching the highlights on an ANA feed, and their announcers were talking about how the Ducks have a game tomorrow, and apparently Hiller will be playing again, so his being pulled might be to “keep him fresh”.

Crawdaddy on a roll

If you are still looking for Mouseketeer names for Crawdaddy, I came up with Ditto – since his initials are CC, and CC is short for carbon copy, hence, Ditto. This explanation has gone on too long, hasn’t it?

Black Friday magic and the goaltending debate.

That was one wonderful pass by Angry Andy wasn’t it? Hossa couldn’t have done better than that. But when it comes to bounces and breaks the ‘Hawks haven’t received many to this point of the season, so I’ll take it.

In 7 starts Crawford has only allowed the opposition to reach 3 goals or more only twice.
On the other hand, Turco in 19 starts has allowed them to reach that plateau 11 times.
It’s pretty easy to see why Craword may become the “chosen one”.

Jake Dowell is a +8 this season. Conversely, Sharp is a -8 … but does have 14 goals though.

Hopefully yesterday is a start in the right direction towards a winning streak and Duncan Keith regaining his D2K form. 2 goals and a -5 just isn’t what I expected (as along with everyone else).

The Hawks overall have been trending in the right direction for a little while now

Inconsistence has been the plague, and may still be. I have the Hawks ranked 7th in the NHL overall. At game 19 the top four Forwards had a 5 game Point AVG 1.8, it is now at 4.4. The Hawks have had a 5 game point Differential of 0 or better for the past 6 games now, after having been at or below 0 for 10+ straight games (1.2 right now). The Hawks have a 5 game avg of 33 S/G for the past 12 games, while holding their opponents to an 5 game average of 29 or less for the past 11 games. The Hawks 5 game avg for GF/G was at a low of 2.2 at game 17, and has now been greater than 3 for the past four games, while GA/G was at a high of 4 after game 15 and has now been 3 or lower for the past 6 games.

I pretty much use this as 1 of my 10 measurements in my Rankings

I turn this into a percentile so the best team gets 100 points (SJS) the worst 0 Points (EDM), with the mean being 50 points, but I break it into both S/G and SA/G. Doing this helps weigh strength in the category so teams that are very close to the same value end up with very close point values, and teams that are running away good or bad have a larger point gap between and the rest of the field.

For example The Hawks have a current 93.1 points in S/G (Hawks 33.5: AVG 30.57: Max 35.7) is and 55.2 points in SA/G (Hawks 30.2 : Avg 30.57: Min 27.4). Currently only SJS is outshooting the Hawks and are tied with Detoilet for 2nd, where the Hawks are about Average in SA/G, and are still far behind STL at 27.4 SA/G.

Not exactly sure how the ranking system works, but it does seem off. Sharks #1? No way. Lightening at #6? We sometimes think our Hawks are an inconsistent team, but the Lightening seem to be the most unpredictable team on any given night.

Perhaps the way your weighing certain needs to be tweaked. Dallas and Anaheim are both better than the Isles as well. Kings and Blues are still much better then where they’re sitting.

Keith and Bolland

Can someone identify a game played by any Hawk defense-man this season as good as the game Keith played last night?

Bolland still needs to up the O, but he had a very good game last night, muzzling Getzlaf, Ryan, Perry all night.

Look at the shift charts- it was just like Vancouver. The mad stache was able to get Bolland over the boards all night against Getzlaf.

I wonder if 2, 7, 36 is the magic shutdown combination.

Maybe its the alcohol, but

It’s kinda funny how the game can be perceived from one set of eyes to the next…

I can see the point about Boynton (easy instigator), but if we bitch about Scott not doing a damn thing (mostly because he never has any takers) then we have to at least give Boynton points for sending the message. When else? When he gets no takers later? (But I’m glad I didn’t have the Chicago feed, else Ed O. might have changed my mind)

The passing last night was bat-shit horrible. Just the worst I’ve seen it. The energy and heart made up for it.

I thought Hossa was atrocious last night.

I haven’t seen the shift numbers, but it seemed like the 4th Line was out alot. and did their job to a T.

After Skille threw a check on a falling Anaheim D, he seemed to tell the guy after the whistle “sorry bout that” … which was kinda stud-like.

but maybe its the alcohol…and it was-ah flowin…

by NesterenkosGhost on Nov 27, 2010 9:35 AM CST reply actions

it was the booze

Hoss was no where near atrocious. He was in on two scoring plays I believe

The idea Boynton had was fine

But not the time/place, at least I don’t think. You want a great example of picking the right spot? Look at the Dowell/Giordano fight when we were getting stomped by the Flames. Dowell picked the absolute right spot to get something going.

On the other hand, Boynton’s bear hugging penalty came during a 1-1 game that had the feeling of a sudden death affair, not to mention the fact that Anaheim’s PP operates at a 25% clip at home. Just thought it gave Anaheim some life at a time when the ’Hawks were controlling the play. It worked out, though, so I guess I should shut up about it.
