He's Coming To Make A Bang: Bolland's Return and Other Tuesday Bits
It's starting to look like that Fabulous Weapon Dave Bolland will be making his return to the Hawks this week. Let the rampant line shuffling begin. According to Kuc, Bolland was skating between Sharp and Hossa. I've already aired my views on this, as I think Sharp the Winger plays to similar a game to Hossa (which Sharp the Center most definitely did not, and I don't think he's gotten enough credit for reshaping his game). But perhaps with the added layers to his game, Sharp can do whatever he needs from wherever he's asked, and we should at least see what it looks like for a few games. The line looks to lack a playmaker, as Bolland is more of a puck-distributor (i.e. just putting it exactly where it needs to go instead of creating chances). However, all of these guys have a cloud-level high Hockey IQ, and if Sharp has his legs going they'll certainly create headaches for opponent's with furious backchecking.
-In that article Ladd left practice early, and I doubt this will be the last time over the next two weeks some winger is "hurt" to put off dealing with the ridiculous logjam the Hawks have at forward.
-There have been rumors circulating about the Hawks acquiring another d-man soon. I find it hard to believe anything will be done before the break. With the Hawks cap situation, why would they pay anyone to do nothing for two weeks when they can hold on for just a couple games? As for the names thrown about, none get my pulse racing either way. Jay McKee would be more than all right as a #6, and provides more size to go with Sopel. Aaron Ward strikes me as just a guy. Sean O'Donnell has actually been real good in LA and I wouldn't mind him here. Could do wonders in teaching Hammer. Garret Exelby has a nasty streak the others don't, but he doesn't always crack the lineup in Toronto. That says enough.
Anyone being brought in would have to be an improvement on what you have. Sopel has been, well, good (on the scale for #6 d-men). So if it's Barker who's going to be replaced, all those names give you a very safe and uncreative third pairing, which is probably just fine. But you can't give up both Barker and an extra forward for bottom-pair, aging, rental d-men. Or can you?
-Niemi starts tomorrow, and if he plays well we can look forward to more interesting days on the blog. It probably has more to do with the Blues not being able to score backstage at a Coldplay show with a 12-inch dong and a pound of coke, and Huet will be needed against Phoenix, where the margin of error is smaller. Or not.
-We haven't commented much on all the Leafs doings, but to me it's a very Shakespearian trade. Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Phaneuf is the perfect Burke player: Big, hyped as nasty when in fact he's just stupid, and overrated by a factor of 12. Time is still on his side and maybe the trade wakes him up, the skill set is there. But I don't see it. As far as what went to Calgary, that's a bag of nameless garbage except for Ian White, who may turn out to better than Phaneuf anyway. Calgary seems to be trying to solve their scoring shortage though quantity of new forwards instead of quality. Bringing in the even more useless Kotalik and Higgins shows you that. The guess here is that the Flames don't even make the playoffs.

I was about to shout BONERTIME! I did it anyway!
How dare you mention McKee’s name has come up in the news as a possible trade target.
You should take ChiBlackhawks advice from the last thread. Jesus Christ.

Fabulous Weapon...
His absence is always one I forget about since he was clearly hurt since the start of the season and his play showed. Now for the first time this season we’ll be at near 100%. I am definetely looking forward to these next two weeks to see how things mesh together and I won’t have to have anymore “oh shit we’re still missing Bolland” moments.
I'd be surprised
Should Bolland play the #2 center EEEMEdiately upon his return—does anyone else see him supplanting Fraser on line 4 to get back on track for a week or so? Otherwise we’re going to be seeing a shit ton of mindfucking line mishmash from Q to limit his minutes. When all is said and done, we will have finally seen the last of Kopecky, and, in my opinion, the last of Burish as well, unless Ladd/Burish/Eager can play center.
I see him
as the #2 center w/ just limited minutes. I can’t wait to see him at least for a few minutes w/ Hossa and Sharp!
Burish is next up (I think Fraser will be odd man out, he kills penalties, can play a little center though), so at least it’s good bye hopefully for now w/ Kopecky!
lines
i’m assuming you mentioned ladd/burish/eager playing center because you feel that ladd would drop to the 4th line with bolland’s return. i highly doubt that. i would think he’d slide down to madden’s line with buff moving to the fourth line.
and yes burish can play center. he did it in the playoffs last year while fraser sat all but one game.
I think we'll be seeing
the shit ton of mindfucking line mishmash from Q. There’s no way anyone knows how Bolland is going to be. I’m just happy that he’s back and we have enough of a lead in the division that Q can get these lines sorted.
Competitive violence, that's why you're here!
Now with Bolland back it’s gives Q even more ammo to fuck with the lines. And if the ’Hawks get down early expect an arrangement of various lines combinations with most of them NOT making much sense.
"Negative energy is better than no energy at all"- "Iron" Mike Keenan
You think so?
Sometimes he comes out with some odd combos, no question, but it seems to me that that often provides a spark when one migth be needed.
Don't move, don't speak, even whisper.
Welcome back Fabulous Weapon.
Sam
I know you don’t like me already, but you’re really overusing the “scoring backstage” analogy. annnd, it would be kinda hard to score backstage at a coldplay show with a 12 inch dick and a pound of coke. you’d need to an aggressive environmental agenda and a pound of hummus or something.
It's all good
The Hawks usually get spanked by whatever weakness this site mentions prior to a game, so it’s very likely that a well hung dude with a mound of coke WILL score backstage sometime this week.
You're just pissed
That no one shows up backstage at your shows with a pound of coke.

Bolland
I really wish he could have been back for the Vancouver game. I hear he is well liked up there.
"Whats your location Chief?"
"Well, Im on a road. Appears to be asphalt. I am directly under the Earth's sun......now."
Just a random thought...
First, great to see Weapon back and practicing, of course.
But, can we beat the fucking Blues by about 10 tomorrow night? I’ve figured out that they’re the waaaay less talented, but just as groin-punchingly annoying, version of the Canucks.
"What the hell, let's review it." - Dale Tallon

"What a farce." - Dale Tallon
I'd rather they wait
and beat them by 10 when we’re in STL
September 26, 2007 The day a Franchise was reborn.
Given the state of the Blues season
The possibility of beating them by 10 at home (where they are a laughable 9-14-5) is far greater than at the UC (where they are an incredible 15-8-4).
"Negative energy is better than no energy at all"- "Iron" Mike Keenan
My personal preference...
Would be to kick the crap of the Blues so badly tomorrow night, that they are forced to play their AHL team against us on Saturday. This results in a final score of Hawks 113, Blues -3.14 with the following highlights: Edzo scores a hat trick coming off the (announcer’s) bench, TOFTBO does a delightful traditional Swedish dance in the crease, there’s a Sopel vs. Zamboni race in between the second and third periods, and Huet scores on the powerplay. Oh, and Versteeg dumps the puck in at the 2:28 mark of the third period.
Hey, a girl can dream, can’t she?

As far as 'Hawks trade rumours go
The Jay McKee potential deal has supposedly been shot down by the ’Hawks as Doug MacLean (HC@N) eluded to today that the Penguins have contacted the ’Hawks for a potential deal but the ’Hawks are, supposedly, not interested.
As far as acquiring a blueliner goes it looks like the ’Hawks are trying to swing a deal with the Lightning to acquire Andrei Mesjaros. According to Darren Dreger it might take Versteeg and Barker to pry him out of there. But it definitely seems possible.
"Negative energy is better than no energy at all"- "Iron" Mike Keenan
he said Versteeg OR Barker OR Sharp
not Versteeg AND Sharp. There’s a big difference in meaning there.
Also, he’s a $4m cap hit signed through 2014. I’m inclined to be wary about Dreger’s sources here, because that kind of monetary commitment makes no sense when we have the salaries of Keith, Seabrook, and Campbell (plus Hammer’s upcoming raise) in our top 4. We’ll be needing blueline depth and that means a lower salary for respectable, though not outstanding, skill.
I seriously don’t understand where these things come from. Obviously the actual trades could be as eyebrow-raising as Phaneuf to the Leafs or something, but then again, nobody predicted THAT.
Tweets @ChiBlackhawks and blogs at Blackhawks Down Low.
by chiblackhawks on Feb 2, 2010 4:11 PM CST up reply actions
I’m inclined to think that he means that the ‘Hawks would be willing to deal 2 of the players mentioned, not just one, and with all things being equal I think we both can agree that Sharp won’t be part of any deal to bring in a #4-6 defenceman.
Dreger’s sources are pretty good and legit and is usually the first to report any trades (although Kypreos broke the Phaneuf to the Leafs potential deal late last week), so with that there might be some validity to this. It’s just a rumour at this point but it’s a deal that does make sense for both sides.
"Negative energy is better than no energy at all"- "Iron" Mike Keenan
Dreger's no Eklund, I agree
And even if we ship Barker out, with or without Sharp, next season we’ll end up with a blue line that looks like this:
Keith – $5.5
Seabrook – $3.5
Campbell – $7.14
Sopel – $2.33
Meszaros – $4
Hjalmarsson – $1 (possible)
For a grand total of $23.47m. What are we, Calgary?

by chiblackhawks on Feb 2, 2010 4:31 PM CST up reply actions
true
But I don’t see how it could work financially either way, unless I’m missing something, because I’m fairly sure our top 4 are set. I imagined they’d be looking for someone who costs less but can still handle the third-pair minutes he’d be given and not be a liability. Maybe that’s asking for a lot.

by chiblackhawks on Feb 2, 2010 4:45 PM CST up reply actions
After watching Mesjaros with the Lightning and before here in Ottawa, he’s no #4-6 but rather a #3-4 defenceman that plays not only physical, but can move the puck. He’d be a tremendous pick-up for the ’Hawks as he could slip up to the top defence tandem without missing a beat. I kind of like this potential move as you can never have enough talented defenceman, especially if 1 of our top 4 goes down due to injury in the playoffs.
Next year is next year and we’ll worry about that day when it arrives. Moving Mesjaros will be a lot easier and offer a lot more in return than will Barker as GM’s have probably taken notice in Barker’s massive decline in play this season.
It’s interesting nonetheless.
"Negative energy is better than no energy at all"- "Iron" Mike Keenan
so treat him like a rental?
There’d be a risk in how much lower the trade value of Blackhawks players would be since everyone would know the team’s situation (that at the end of the season, we’d be looking to basically just dump salary), but that’s another topic altogether. I was more worried about taking on more salary for the next years.

don’t you think Hendry will actually get a spot on the roster? If so, don’t we only need a rental, and some more skill at the AHL level for back-up in case of injury?

and would like maybe a back-up D-man who is as solid as Hendry has been this season. In an ideal world, we’d be able to get someone who fills that role and he doesn’t have to be a rental, so whoever we give up would be worth the trade in the long run too.

are our minors that bad?
I haven’t been keeping up with what’s going on in Rockford so I don’t know what to expect from those kids.
I think that a healthy organization would have 1 or 2 players that move up a year to fill holes either by salary concerns or injury. If we can’t expect that now I’d rather have trades that bring back prospects or picks so we can fill slots around The Core. The farm system is what would keep us in contention for the next 5 years.

Not trying to start angy debate here
But should Buff not have thrown the flying elbow at Kornhole last year when he knocked out JCH? Should no one have challenged Willy Bitch when he gave Toews a concussion? What I hear from that article is that he longs for a day when skill was equalized by just beating the shit out of players with skill and make them fear trying their fantsy pants moves that made the goons look as dumb and stupid as they in reality, were. Play his logic out further, he’s pissed because the big hitter bweaks his wittle finger while accepting a challenge. Would he be happier if instead the other team upped the ante and then injured a star player in retaliation?
I’m honestly not against big, clean hits. But the reality is that those big hits are meant to intimidate and are usually delivered by a bigger player to a smaller player who has committed the capital crime of not seeing it coming. If the choice is to have a big hit, retaliation fight and then it’s over versus endless retaliation until someone’s start player get’s seriously hurt, I’ll pick the former any day.
by NKLHD on Feb 2, 2010 10:11 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
Hodgepodge of thoughts, no arguement
I think his point was that a big clean devastating hit should be answered with a big clean devastating hit. The guy who delivers said hit, shouldn’t have to anwer with his fists. There are some great points made in the comments under the article.
I started typing that Buff should have no questions asked, dropped em and dropped Kronwall. Instead he gave him a REALLY dirty look. But I gave up Buff bashing as my New Years resolution. In the future, our skillful wingers should put the puck in the corners and send Buff in like a freakin missle.
The hit on Toews was clean and legal. If the roles were reversed, we’d all be singing a different tune. When Ladd smoked Matt D’Agostini from the Habs, one of his teamates Immediately dropped the gloves and Ladd was sent off for the game. His hit turned out to be Legal as well.
The game has been sped up over the years and the hits are brutal as a result. I also think the fact everyone is wearing a shield makes them lead with their head.

big hits = fights
The reality is if you lay a big hit on one of my star players im gonna fight you…next time you ll think about goin after….say Gretz. Its the definition of an enforcer.
but that’s exactly what the article was complaining about. did you even read it? McKenzie mentions that Gretzky’s protection is what started the no-hits-to-stars rule in the NHL, and he doesn’t like it.
All right, come on, dummy, you won the game. Come on. Pick up your trophy.
excessive
I read you man< i guess i just dnt agree with mckenzie because so many teams rely on 1 star player. Why not have a fourth liner go after star players so u have more of a shot to win big games? I just think theres to much room for interpretation for what is excessive.
There are hits that are "excessive" even though still clean & players that are high contact and those that aren't
Most long time hockey people have a sort of sliding standard as to what is appropriate contact on which players.
A non-physical playing star (think Kane) gets more protection from others than a physical grinder (think Eager or Burish).
A player who utterly devastates Kane with a check – albeit a legal one – is appropriately going to have to answer to the others on the team. A solid but not excessive hit on one such as Kane should not generate the same response.
'Steeg and Barker would be would be almost 6.1 (or 6.2) mil cap space
to get Mesjaros at 4.0 cap hit, that would free 2 of the roughly 4 mil we need to shed.
If we sent Buf too (maybe getting a draft pick or 2) – we’d be getting into decent cap space shape (allowing for a respectable but not generous offer to Hammer). Bickell is the depth forward then.

It was done after that game. Pretty classless of the Flames to hold off that trade until after the game with Jokinen and Prust not too happy about. Jokinen called it “a slap in the face” and who could’ve blamed him.
Supposedly, it was the Flames that held up the deal and not Kotalik who wasn’t with the NYRangers on their current road trip so he wouldn’t have been available in time for the Flames game last night so Sutter put it on hold. A rumour of course, but I kind of believe it.

I too like the idea of Versteeg on 4th line
if Sharpy is gonna stay put on the 2nd line. Maybe it’ll force Versteeg to play more fundamentally sound? What I like best is that it creates even more match up nightmares for opposing coaches. Plus, every time Versteeg pisses off Q, it seems he has to juggle the lines to reduce Versteeg’s TOI. This way he won’t have to. Solves a lot of problems in one move IMHO.
