Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Prelim-Orama

Who doesn't love a day full of four mediocre hockey games?  As my father would say with basketball, "Hey, it's hoops."  Hey, it's pucks:

2pm Central: Switzerland v. Belarus (USA)

For US fans, this is the game we have to pay attention to.  None of us would look forward to another date with Jonas Hiller, who's capable of making things awfully dicey for anyone.  He'll probably make it so for the Bela Fleck Russians, who contain some Kostitsyn's and not much else (by the by, what do you think a bar looks like after Kaner and Sergei Kostitsyn are through?)

6:30pm: Canada v. Deutschland

Well, I'd love to sit here and tell you that the Germans rigorous trap will make things hard on the hosers.  I'd love to tell you that if the Canadians don't score early, the tension will become meeting-the-in-laws high.  I'd love to tell you that under that pressure, Roberto Luongo will crack.  I'd love to tell you that the longer they hang in the Germans will believe more and more.  I'd love to tell you Tomas Greiss will have the game of his life, facing his Shark teammates.  But I can't.  If you're looking for an early Canadian exit, your hopes lie with Alex Ovechkin, who very well may do it himself.

9pm: Czech Republic v. Latvia

The top seed in this round vs. the lowest.  The Czechs should make quick work of this one, setting up an intriguing game vs. the Finns.  I don't know anyone on the Latvian squad, in fact I don't know any Latvians.  This will be late dinner time.

11pm: Slovakia v. Norway

Strangely, that Norway-Switzerland game was one of the more entertaining of the tourney.  Slovakia is weird, as they looked slightly outclassed vs. the Czechs, but wound up beating the Russians.  Kopecky has looked useful this week if you can believe it.  Any team boasting Gaborik and Hossa could cause some trouble, and Sweden won't be too excited to have to deal with that.  I'm sure the Norwegian are salivating at the thought of getting a crack at arch-rival for everything Sweden, but they don't have enough here.  It's a chalky day, but it beats workin'.

Nothing better...

Then 4 “mediocre” games as you said. Hockey is hockey and I’ll take what I can get right now!

With that said, the only game that I think might be good is well…maybe the one w/ that Horsa guy. I am curious to see how Canada responds w/ there Savior in Luongo

Canada v. Krauts

Totally agree with you on that preview. As much as some may hope and pray for an upset, there’s no way Canada allows themselves to lose that one. No way.

I'm actually really looking forward to some of these games

I like scrappy mediocre games better than blowouts to the tune of Latvia 0 Canada 80 bajillion. The US finds out who we need to beat in quarters. The rest of the world finds out if Canada can finally locate a player who understands Sidney Crosby enough to play line with him. Tomorrow everyone plays for the real deal. Life is good.

Canada Favoritism

Did anyone notice that the rest of the prelim teams have to play back to back, Tuesday and Wednesday night except Canada? It’s not like they’re slated to play the late game.

by herecomethehawks77 on Feb 23, 2010 2:38 PM CST reply actions

I think that someone

Said the times for the games were set based on what seed they were, and it just happens that Canada is seeded so that they have time off.

wait what?

by pepe126 on Feb 23, 2010 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

The number 1 seed was set to play

Tomorrow at 2, regardless of who was going to be the number 1 seed. So if Canada is getting more time off than other teams, it is merely a coincidence due to how the schedule had already been set.

wait what?

by pepe126 on Feb 23, 2010 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

I don't understand his point and I don't understand what you are explaining to him

The winner of every game today is playing at the exact same time tomorrow, who is getting an advantage?

"In an ideal world I would have all 10 fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching."

by Hack on Feb 23, 2010 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

He was stating that Canada is the only team not playing back to back because of favoritism

I was explaining that the times of elimination games had been set weeks ago(days maybe? but definitely before anyone knew what seed Canada would be), so it is not due to Canadian favoritism, but mere chance.

wait what?

by pepe126 on Feb 23, 2010 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

But in reality

They would play back to back assuming they win today, so it’s all a moot point.

wait what?

by pepe126 on Feb 23, 2010 3:10 PM CST up reply actions

this is why I was confused...

He was saying that they were getting special treatment since they weren’t playing in a back to back.

Instead of you saying, “they are playing in a back to back”, you went with “the seeding dictates the dates/times” and I could not understand what you guys weren’t seeing.

Can't he constantly talk about one of his other former teams?

It baffles me that he states Huet hasn’t proven himself, yet recommends 24 year old Halak who has all of 3 games of playoff experience.

I have no opinion on Halak, the thought process just confuses me.

by Katherine215 on Feb 23, 2010 3:34 PM CST up reply actions

exactly

he’s also big on Vokoun, a “perfect fit” in his words. Yeah, lots of good work there in the playoffs. Lost 2 series. He’s never won a playoff series… just like Huet!
and then there’s my favorite part:

“There are a lot of goaltenders out there who fit the bill, because you really don’t need too much in Chicago to have the best chance to win the Cup.”

But not Huet or Niemi, no no no! They don’t even have that much.
Fucking assclown JR, please stop talking about the Hawks

SCH Resident Idiot

by Johnny Lava on Feb 23, 2010 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

It is less about playoff experience....

and more about the “eye-test”, but the eye-test isn’t exactly technical lingo.

To briefly defend JR, Waddle and Silvy bring him on and ask him goaltender questions because they know they’ll get a response. He is just answering the question honestly, like any analyst should. Calling him an idiot is much more fair than saying he shouldn’t talk about it when he’s asked about it.

Alot of people see some soft goals Huet gives up, and they don’t see him “carry” a team every other night and they think this won’t get the job done. I’m ok with us going with Huet because I think the hawks can be good enough and he can make the stops, but if Bowman goes out and gets a Halak or a Vokoun (which probably isn’t going to happen), I’m not going to complain about it.

"In an ideal world I would have all 10 fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching."

by Hack on Feb 23, 2010 3:46 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed...

…but after watching Ryan Miller the last three games (I keep waiting for shots to trickle through or result in rebounds, but it doesn’t happen), we’re all in for a readjustment process starting March 2.

One other point: goalies loom larger in one-game eliminiation series than in 7 game series.

by cliffkoroll on Feb 23, 2010 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

f-ing ESPN then

doing all of that cross-media crap just to make $$

I just don’t see the Hawks making a goalie trade while Huet’s contract is here and I don’t see any team that’s going to pick up that cap hit. And I’m ok with that.

I can’t wait till after the deadline when we can all take a deep breath, step back, and say “Ok, these are the guys we’re going to war with” and be done with it. (At least until the draft….)

Is anyone watching this game?

all I can see is the stats from the office, but at the 2nd intermission it’s 2-2 and the SOG are 26-11 in favor of the Swiss. It looks like Belarus took the early lead and then the Swiss tied it on a power play in the first. The Swiss took the lead in the 2nd with another PP goal, but Belarus tied it late.

Are any of you guys watching? What’s the game like?

The Swiss seem to be outskating the Belarussians, however there havnt been many quality chances for the watch makers

watching.

While the Swiss look really flat (for the record, it’s 2-2 with 4:30 min left in the third right now) and haven’t gotten any lucky bounces, the Belarussians haven’t exactly set the world on fire either. At this point, either one looks like they’ll get steamrolled tomorrow.

The Belarussian goalie has made some key saves, and Hiller hasn’t looked that fabulous. I don’t really think that’s the difference in the game though. Everyone’s defense has been iffy, but no one’s forwards have really lit up the ice. A very average game by all involved, but as a US fan I can only hope they keep playing this way tomorrow.

Honestly

It didnt seem like there was a single shot in the last 330, so maybe the “shoot” was warranted

by BigCSouthside on Feb 23, 2010 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

There was a pre-set play off a faceoff

in which, yes, the man should have shot the puck. But to be fair, there were two defensemen between him and the goal, so it probably wasn’t obvious that neither of them were looking at the actual puckhandler —they both thought someone else had control, I think. It wasn’t a situation where I personally would have been yelling at the ice (not like a Kopecky breakaway where he gets the puck then completely forgets what to do with it when there’s no one between him and the goal).

But I never expected a national broadcaster to yell that on air. In TWO LANGUAGES, no less.

Ooh, crazy power play shenanigans!

A two-on-one break for the Swiss on a Belarussian powerplay results in an exciting few seconds, but the Belarussian goalie does his job and it all ends in nothing. :52 seconds left in the PP, 5:22 left in OT.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Feb 23, 2010 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

Still in OT...

Swiss seem energized by a successful kill. A couple different Swiss shots blocked pretty spectacularly by Belarussian goalie, who isn’t getting any help from his defense (two of them just ran into each other, clownshoes). Two minutes left in OT.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Feb 23, 2010 4:34 PM CST up reply actions

And it goes to the shagging contest!

The Belarussians played a whole lot of defense across the whole OT, and didn’t concentrate a lot on any kind of offense. Looks like they wanted to take it to shootout. Switzerland was aggressive but couldn’t get anything going, actually looked pretty neutered out there despite their clear desire to end it before the shagging contest.

So we get a brief rest for ice resurfacing, and then the aforementioned shagging contest. God help us all.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Feb 23, 2010 4:38 PM CST up reply actions

So! We can has shootout.

- Swiss go first: #18 scores on Mezen (Belarussian goalie). Edzo: “Forehand, backhand, that’s the way you do it!” Drink!)
- Hiller saves on BLR#10. Basically with his testicles, which is morbidly funny.
- #67 scores on Mezen, to set up a do-or-die situation for BLR.
- BLR #19 fakes out Hiller and scores!
- SWZ #32 doesn’t sell the fake for Mezen, and gets blocked.
- Edzo composes an impromptu rhapsody to ‘hands, all about hands’, but #11 for BLR doesn’t manage to slip it past Hiller, and that’s the win.

by synaptique on Feb 23, 2010 7:31 PM CST reply actions

Yes, he was.

My point is that if he’s good enough to do it for Team Canada, he’s good enough to have the job on a permanent basis. As opposed to Q’s method of Buf(ugh)lien + eeny meeny miney mo.

by synaptique on Feb 23, 2010 7:35 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, two different roles though

If you see more keith on the powerplay, that doesn’t mean you’ll see less byfuglien. Buff isn’t really QBing the powerplay, he’s just a triggerman. What we really need is for seabrook to get going at that spot instead of Buff.

by Hack on Feb 24, 2010 9:47 AM CST up reply actions

It basically comes down to a lack of right-handed shooters, no?

It’s difficult for a lefty to unload on a pass across the body, so Q’s choices are limited if he prefers a righty in that role.

Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Feb 24, 2010 10:45 AM CST up reply actions

to a degree

but I believe Barker was the triggerman a lot last year with campbell actually QBing the powerplay. I would assume with two guys shooting from the left or two from the right, you would favor the shooter for easier one-timers and make the other guy pass across his body.

by Hack on Feb 24, 2010 11:05 AM CST up reply actions

A leftie over on the right side can unload the shot as well

IF (and that is a big IF) the pass is good. The rightie on the right side has a little more “margin of slop” with the pass coming to him, and so a rightie there is preferable.

The announcers for CAN-GER mentioned

that the Canadian coaching staff said Nash had been stuck on a line with Toews in an attempt to kickstart Nash, the logic being that Toews’s ‘bring it every shift’ mentality might be contagious. So yeah, Babcock’s a big fan.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Feb 24, 2010 8:41 AM CST up reply actions

scratch that, Howard spent 4 seasons in the A

Howard in the AHL:
05-06 — 2.58 GAA, .910 SV%
06-07 — 2.70, .911
07-08 — 2.83, .907
08-09 — 2.54, .916

Crawford:
05-06 — 2.94, .898
06-07 — 2.84, .909
07-08 — 2.83, .907
08-09 — 2.59, .917

currently Crawford has a 2.70 GAA and .910 SV% but I guess my real point was, Howard wasn’t exactly a high-calibre goalie either.

by chiblackhawks on Feb 24, 2010 11:41 AM CST up reply actions

Good point

time will still tell with Howard, but yes, his previous stats didn’t foretell his success this year. Thanks for the numbers.

I guess my point was that if Crawford was going to come into his own, one would think this would’ve been his year. He got beat out by Niemi in what essentially came down to a coin toss. You’d think he’d be a man on a mission, but his number have actually regressed.

I’m going to watch the IceHogs this Saturday and I have tix for a couple more games this season. I’ll try to give a decent report of how Crawford and/or Fallon look (the inescapable eye test). They’ve been pretty much splitting time down there.

Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Feb 24, 2010 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

I'm pissy about Howard

because before he came up the Red Wings fans that I know thought he’d be a liability, but instead right now he’s the only reason the Wings are still in contention for a playoff spot. Nobody saw him coming.

Haven’t really been following the IceHogs so I can’t tell you what I think of Crawford, but I thought he was sidelined by an injury sometime before 2009 ended too. He was fairly solid the one time I did go to Rockford, but hey, sample size and everything. Let us know how the next few games are, and if you’re doing the Blackhawks Night on Saturday, fanpost pls. :P

Tweets @ChiBlackhawks and blogs at Blackhawks Down Low.

by chiblackhawks on Feb 24, 2010 1:31 PM CST up reply actions

it also made sense to try Niemi first instead of Crawford

Niemi wouldn’t have to clear waivers to be sent down, but Crawford would have to clear waivers to be sent down.

Once Niemi was up and played – his performance as back up has ben very good, so as to prompt the Hawks to keep him here.

Niemi & Crawford had similar stats for last year at Rockford – although Neimi had a slight edge on save percentage and a decent edge on winning percentage.

Player Name GP Min GA GAA W L T Pct SO
Joe Fallon 2 63 1 0.95 0.94 0
Antti Niemi 38 2095 85 2.43 18 14 3 0.917 2
Corey Crawford 47 2686 116 2.59 22 20 3 0.913 2

I thought both of those games were very Blackhawk-like. SVK and CZE out-shot their opponents 2 to 1 and still barely won.
