A Couple Quick Things Before It All Goes Down
-Last call for Toews-Face Entrants:. Enter your entry in the comments of this post, and if we use it in Wednesday's Indian you'll get a free subscription for the rest of the season. Or something. Don't worry, already got you, Chi.
-Secondly, EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT! The Bottom Lounge (1375 W. Lake St.) will be hosting our first Second City/Committed Indian Post-game Party on Wednesday. So if you're going to the game, come to the Bottom Lounge after as there will be plenty of discounted and free drinks and the like. The food there is also pretty kick-ass, so if you don't get in a dinner before the game, come have one after.
-Lastly: Second City Hockey's Podcast, "Live From The Five Hole" with special guest Josh Mora will be posted tomorrow night, so keep an eye out for it. It'll be a little rough, it's our first attempt and all. But we'll get it right eventually.

Ticket?
Hey all,
I landed in Chicago today (for work, unfortunately, not play) and will be here until next Sunday. I thought I’d try asking again about the Canucks game on Friday; I’m hoping to go and thought that with some miraculous luck someone here might have an extra ticket I can buy without getting gouged. Lemme know if you do … my email is in my profile thing.
I didn’t want to make a fanpost for this … was afraid it might be uncouth.

afraid of being uncouth?
such a considerate guest.
reveling in uncouthosity is so common these days.
I don’t have tickets – sorry. Where abouts (or aboots, eh?) are you staying/working for the week? Downtown – ’burbs -etc.?
by krome on Feb 27, 2010 6:10 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Staying downtown, zipping about on the El over the course of the week, keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll see Hossa score a shorty live. And, of course, I’ll be visiting Reckless Records at some point, and who knows, maybe even trying to do something culchural.
www.mjt.org
What’s the culchure like in Halifax? Must not be much if you’ve resorted to dating Scum fans.
All right, come on, dummy, you won the game. Come on. Pick up your trophy.
You bastard. Our rich culture flaunts itself at a single intersection downtown, 3 corners of which house three different pizza spots where on drunken nights you can buy slices that differ only in the degree of their coldness.
There are other things, too, but that’s the main one.
Apparently, there are also girls who don’t like the Senators, Habs or Leafs.
www.mjt.org
Halifax is
quaint. When I was living in New Haven, my wife and I took a trip up the New England coast, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia (tide boring in Bay of Fundy!), Halifax and then up to Quebec to spend time with out college roommate.
Ah, think I’ll go help myself to a beer.
I thought a night out in Halifax
only involved going to a Sloan show.
Tremendously Tremendous

What the hell?
What’s going on downtown tonight? There’s fireworks at Michigan on the river. It’s like you guys have gone ahead and decided to celebrate your silver medal ahead of the game tomorrow.

At the icehogs game right now
Bickell has been a workhorse and good in front of the net at times.
Dowell = Madden. Great vocal leader on ice. Does it all.
Skille, not so impressive in 1st period. Couldn’t catch a pass to save his life. Also doing a lot of whining. Looking good in 2nd though. Just missed a shorty.
Cullimore is an absolute monster.
Keith (yes Keith), good hustle.
Klinkhammer has been invisible.
Crawford hasn’t been tested much (seriously just got scored on as I typed to this. Ugh 0-1).
Phillips is fun to watch. Plays a lot like Keith. Good with the puck.
Two good long fights tonight.
Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

but tell us about the singing!
Someone said Hammer was singing Jingle Bells. Then another said Hammer and Niemi were singing Twelve Days of Christmas. Which was it really, and why do they think it’s December?

They were playing videos of the players who were there for the signing
on the jumbo-tron. It was an old video I’ve seen at the UC of Hammer and Niemi absolutely failing at singing Xmas songs in English. They also had a video of Coach Haviland dropping f-bomb after f-bomb and laughing his ass off (of course it was beeb beeb beeb). It was funny though. I love that guy. He really seems to enjoy himself – and why wouldn’t he? He’s got a dream job.
It was a great game. Hogs tied it up with 11 secs left and won in a shootout. Crawford is a great shootout goalie. We should bring him up!

I was there!
Thanks to M. for the ride!
It wound up being a great game. The most exciting game-tying goal I’ve seen in person, putting IceHogs on the board with less than 12 seconds left. (I found out later the Wolves tied the Admirals with 7 seconds left last night, but that game was 6-6. Not as exciting as getting a FIRST goal in the last few seconds…)
And yes, two of the more brutal fights I’ve seen this year (I think they had to scrape blood off the ice in the first one) and some near-fights. Well, it was a baby Blackhawks-Blues game…
I had no patience to stand in line, so all I have are blurry photos of the Hawks at the table…it was fun to see them (sort of) up close, and then seeing them ride around in cars on the ice…

I think I might have seen you
I try to read everyone’s blogs and I’ve seen your pic (that’s why I made the ice cream comment the other night. I’m an ice cream junkie). I thought I saw a gal who looked like you last night taking photos of the players from behind the ropes, but wasn’t sure. If it was you, nice almost meeting you! I took a few hundred photos last night, but it appears that most of my pics of the Hawks at the signing table came out blurry too. I think I got some good shots of them in the convertibles though. I also took some cool photos from up on the balcony behind the net. Are you going to make a fanpost?
How about that National Anthem?? I wish I could’ve recorded that. Not quite the UC experience!
What was your take on the individual players?
Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

Aha!
That was close…ha, nothing makes my day like someone recognizing me in public from my blog or Flickr. I didn’t quite get the ice cream remark the other day but I figured it wasn’t an insult or anything…
I was there by the ropes in the hallway. I would have still been in a puffy black coat and possibly my Hawks winter hat. I had a small pink camera. I’ll try to make a fanpost and a longer version on the blog.
I wasn’t sure which UC/Hawks traditions would be at an IceHogs game and which wouldn’t. I figured they were too polite to cheer over a group of kids singing…
I kept the lineup sheet on my lap so I could keep up with the players, but don’t feel qualified to comment on any except the Rivermen goalie, who seemed awfully good, unfortunately.

I waited in line for autographs for over an hour
and didn’t even get close to the guys. It came down to maybe getting my pucks signed and watching the game – the game won.
I know have some good pictures of the fights (and the little man scraping the blood off the ice) and the shootout. I haven’t put them on my computer yet – I can put a link to them or something when I have a chance.
I still have a migraine from all the horns/cow bells/drunk men behind us singing the words to the cock rock on the PA. I swear I heard those damn bells as I was falling asleep last night.
"FACEOFF!" "Makes the pass." "FIGHT!" - 8 bit hockey
Those horns were awful
the worst part though was that some ass blocked my photos of the game winning goal with his horn in my face.
I got some really good fight photos too. Here’s one of my favs. It definitely needs a caption, cause that guy looks like he’s about to crap himself. Maybe he did…

uh...today's game
I’ll be able to make it to the afterparty Wednesday—nice, still haven’t been to the new Bottom Lounge location. But I don’t see anything about where people are watching today… ESPN Zone would be too crowded. I know a downtown place but I’d rather stick to my general neighborhood area (Wicker Park/Logan Square). I’ve never been to Whirlaway in the daytime…I assume they’re open? Piece in WP was a good place to watch the game Friday but I don’t know if anyone I know would be there.
I won’t have a problem seeing the game, but since I still have no NBC I can’t record it off TV. Anyone who produces an extra DVR copy would be a hero to me, just saying…

As long as there isn't a Kansas or Wisconsin
basketball game going on, the best place to watch in WP is probably Lotties.
ah, it’s the “official Blackhawks bar” for the area. I’m not even sure I’ve ever been there, which is odd considering it looks like an authentic old neighborhood bar. Thanks, might prefer that to Piece. The problem is that I won’t be there with anyone I know. My other friends don’t care about sports and my sports friends are rather quiet today…

Get there early if you want a table
it has a great reputation as a sports bar. If you go by yourself you can either sit at the bar or right across from the bar about mid way back there are three tables that just seat two people, and are great for when you’re by yourself.
Another decent option is Tavern at North and Damen. I have no idea what the crowd will be like, but you’re likely to be able to find a seat, and it has a huge number of seats at the bar facing the tvs. It generally gets an international crowd on Sunday afternoons. I remember watching a lot of World Cup games there a few years ago, and it’s the kind of place that shows rugby and Champions League games.

So very glad I don't know what that means
Chicagoan in the Lou.
by Mike Martin on Feb 28, 2010 12:15 PM CST up reply actions
It means Canada
are pretty decent favorites. In a game like this I’m guessing the line is moving a little bit in the favor of the US based on all the people who want to just bet with their heart. That’s why the Cubs and Notre Dame always get odds that don’t pay like they should, a lot of people bet them with their hearts moving the line. The fact that two of the sites have no money line (the amount of payout for an outright win) seems to suggest they fear a bunch of people betting the US to win outright and the booking houses don’t want have their book with a bunch of money on one side and not enough on the other.
could you explain all that to me?
SCH's Resident Anti-Pierre McGuire Jihadist
by BigCSouthside on Feb 28, 2010 12:21 PM CST up reply actions
Sure
The first line means that you either handicap Canada one goal (or one half goal) for a regular payout. That means if you bet $10 on Canada at Bodog or Sportsbook they would have to win by more than one goal to pay out. If they win by only one it’s a push and if they lose it’s a loss.
The money line is a little more confusing but it’s the amount of payout on a straight wager with no handicapping. This is how most baseball is bet. The first number (the negative number) is how much you would have to wager on the favorite to win $100 and the second number (the positive number) is how much you would win if you bet $100 on the underdog. So you would have to risk losing $210 to win $100 if you want to bet on Canada to win, or you would risk losing $100 to win $175 if you want to bet on the US to win.
Thanks
