Brendan Witt On Waivers? Yes Please
(Via TSN) The New York Islanders have placed veteran defenceman Brendan Witt on waivers.
Witt, 34, was activated off injured reserve this week after sitting out most of last month with a knee injury.
Witt has two goals and five points in 42 games this season. If he clears waivers after 24 hours, the club will likely send him to their American Hockey League affiliate in Bridgeport.
With all this talk about the Hawks needing a physical, veteran blueliner Witt is the ultimate deal. If they pick him up off waivers the Hawks will split $3.0 million dollar salary with the Islanders for the rest of the season, with the added bonus that he is a UFA and the end of the year. Much better than wasting Buff or Versteeg on someone like Jay McKee.

The one thing you forgot to mention
Is Brendan Witt sucks. Sure he’s a tough player but he’s one of the slowest skaters in the league, has no offensive skill at all, and really isn’t all that great in his own zone. Decent but nothing special.
It would be like picking up Matt Walker but even worse.

Also...
He got hit by and SUV earlier in the year. Luckily he wasn’t injured so we can have a laugh at his expense and it also leads me to believe his reaction time is horrible.

The Hawks are loking for...
The main argument is that the Hawks are looking for a defensive d-man that can be physical and that is what Witt is. We already have 5 offensive (maybe not strictly offensive) d-men. We just need a plug as playoff insurance if Brent Sopel can’t fill a hole if someone gets hurt.

you count 5 offensive d-men?
if you have to draw a line in the sand and categorize a guy as an offensive or defensive defenseman here’s what I come up with…
Offense:
Dunc
Soup
Defense:
Seabrook
Hammer
Sopel
Neither (and not ‘neither’ as in balanced, ‘neither’ as in blah):
Barker

Although...
…Dunc is rightly considered one of the top defensive d-men in the league too.
Don’t make me say “active stick”.

I understand that....
which is why I went with the “line in the sand” approach.
This year especially, dunc gets offense.

Just say no to Witt,
I have watched him this year, the Isles are my other team that I watch, and he is too slow for the Isles to want. The Isles are dying for some defense this year.
Just think about that for a moment, Okay? Take a deep breath, and step down from the ledge, I have enjoyed watching Witt in the past, just like I enjoyed watching Hull Sr. That doesn’t mean that they could do it now. Just for the record, my money would be on Hull to do better than Witt has this year.

I watched Bobby play, sorry for the miss. I had B Hull there at first, but I changed it when I thought that someone might think I was talking about Bret.
Go figure. ;)
