REPLACE FOLEY & EDDIE- put excitement back into the game !!
I thought I was just spoiled by the tremendously exciting play by play calling of Lloyd Pettit back when the Hawks made a run for the Cup back in 1971, but after listening to many broadcasting teams on the NHL Network, I have come to understand how inferior our Blackhawk broadcasting team actually is.
Frankly, our guys sound like a couple old ladies or perhaps just 2 men who have lost their passion for this awesome sport. It is unbelievable to me the way they these two can carry on chatting about linguini with clam sauce or beef stroganoff ? - when the Blackhawks are storming the net ! Worse than their incessant boring chatter is their utter lack of depth when it comes to insight into the game of hockey.
It is now time to rise up and demand a broadcasting duo worthy of our remarkably gifted team. I am looking forward to the game in which I do not have to listen to the opponents broadcasters to receive any insight into the game and the sound of a passionate voice when a great effort is made.
I would like to poll the readers to learn how many others are aware of how bad we got it with these two sticks in the mud ?
If you would like a new broadcast team vote yes
If you want to keep the old broadcast team vote no.
SCH Update - I edited the poll to actually give us all the option to vote no. You're welcome.

I vote No
but since you didn’t add that as an option. I can say this.
Get Real! You have any suggestions for replacements?
How can you say that Foley doesn’t get excuted about the play on the ice? And if you want insight how many time do you hear “For all you young hockey players out there”

"You have any suggestions for replacements?"
Sounds like one of the arguments to trade Huet. The difference being is that nobody wants to get rid of Foley and Edzo.

I voted "No" too, just like everyone else
But I watched the French broadcast of a Canadiens game the other day, and if we have to replace Edzo and Foley, let’s throw in some French broadcasters. It would be like watching Spanish league soccer, only different.

you people do know that......
your first order of business upon joining SCH doesn’t have to be making a ridiculous fanpost, right?
The linguini clam sauce thing came after the meier advertisement, it was during a faceoff, and last like 20 seconds, get a grip.
Edzo: What is that (on the bobblehead) a fu manchu?
Edzo: Let me pull it out.
Foley: You’re talking about the bobblehead right?
Are you not entertained?
The poll you have up is like something out of Chicago’s political handbook. Do you approve of Richard Dailey? Answer yes, or don’t fucking vote.

but I like listening to them laugh. I always find watching games to be more fun when it’s obvious that the announcers are enjoying their work.

you really want one of the opposing teams broadcaster here to explain to us what a slashing penalty is???? Cuz when i hear out of town broadcasters they announce the game like no one has ever heard of hockey before. I dont need my intelligence insulted while listening to an original six hockey teams game. This is Chicago buddy. If you wanna be pampered, go to Nashville, its like going to a high school game, if they didnt tell their fans to cheer on the scoreboard they would have no idea what the hell to do.

someone mentioned a "holding period" before membership is approved or new members are allowed to post
I don’t remember what it was exactly, or what SB Nation is capable of doing. And I don’t know if it will actually help. But I feel like these posters get some sort of overwhelming desire to rant so they join up, spew their vitriol, then go away. If they’re not allowed to post right away, they’ll probably just find some other place to vent.

Don't most (sane) people follow the boards a few days before registering anyway?
If you made them wait 24 hours, a person serious about commenting would still be coming back. And if they were fired up about something in particular, they might have cooled down enough to let a little logic in.
Or is there a way to keep them from doing fanposts for 24 hours at least? so they can comment but not throw themselves in the limelight with a fanpost (which is what I think most of them want most anyway)?

since the days of Lloyd Pettit. If this person doesn’t like listening to Foley and Edzo, turn the sound down and listen to John Wiedeman & Troy Murray on the radio. Their broadcasts are much more descriptive than anything on TV.

For the record
I love listening to Pat and Eddie, and wouldn’t dream of replacing them. However, I will say this – I’ve watched Chicago broadcasts of Hawks games with friends who root for other teams (Canucks and Scum, respectively), on separate occasions. Both of them had almost an identical comment: “do these guys actually call the game?” Made me realize that what we’re very fond of here doesn’t always translate well to those who aren’t homegrown.
And yeah, I know both those guys aren’t exactly neutral when it comes to anything Hawks-related, but they don’t go out of their way to be assholes about it. I paid them both back by telling them that they actually agreed on something, which made them pretty sick.

"do these guys actually call the game?"
Remember, there’s a difference between TV and radio. Most TV announcers across all sports don’t call the game half as much as radio, because the pictures are there for you.
I love Foley (and love the radio guys too), but when Foley used to be simulcasted on the radio, it would drive me nuts because he would rarely say how much time was left in the period, and even then it was just generalities (“Halfway through the first”, and you’d see on the TV that the clock read 11:04.)

Hands down, Nashville's duo
Is small market TV to the max. Absolutely horrible. St. Louis, with the execption of Darrin Pang – miserable. Columbus — not only is the broadcast team awful to listen to, the game presentation might be the worst in the NHL. It seems as Fox Bluegrass is only using three cameras.
Fox Mayberry down in Raleigh is just about as bad.
Good for Chicago — but bad fo those of us outside on CI, more WGN games means the forced watching of the other team’s feed, as WGN is only supplied if the opposition doesn’t have a cablecast available.
LA, PHX, ANA, are more than acceptable — but if there is a non-Hawks game I want to see, and it involves a Canadian broadcaster, I’ll take TSN, Rogers Sportsnet or CBC’s feed ANY time over anything from the US.
Foley/Eddie are fine. Those of you who complain don’t hear other markets. Lloyd Petit was back in my childhood…and he was one of the best — ever.
When I hear Harvey Wittenberg filling on at the UC public address system for the awful screamer they’ve borrowed from WWE, who’s there every night, it’s like a flashback to the Stadium, bringing back some great memories.

Foley is past his prime - listen to the radio
John Wiedeman and Troy Murray should replace Foley EMMEDIATELY! (as Eddi O says.) Eddie’s commentary makes me feel like he doesn’t know that cycling the puck is now taught to mites and squirts and is basic hockey for any hockey fan (who they should be broadcasting to). I do not understand why they are trying to comment to the casual fan. Those people, while I appreciate them jumping the bandwagon do not listen to the game, they watch at a bar or at parties where the game is in the background, they might catch exciting play by play, but they ignore commentary. I am at the point where I mute the TV and listen to Wiedeman and Murry since they actually broadcast the play by play and then insert insighteful commentary during stopages instead of talking about what they had for dinner last night.
Foley is way past his prime. Everyone (including me) has to get over what Foley was and what he now is.
Just listen to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDDX—lb2m0&feature=related . Foley is actually calling the game in real time here. )1994. Compared to toady with, eddie O interupting and foley three steps behind the play
by bender14 on Feb 5, 2010 5:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
How do you know what a casual fan does when watching the game? I call shenanigans. I happen to know a number of casual fans who listen to the game.
Remember, though, there are a shit ton of new hockey fans, who aren’t casual, who have just never been exposed to the sport in any way until now. Just because you were blessed to follow hockey in the lean years doesn’t mean everyone else who enjoys the game now had the same commitment and opportunity to do so.
All right, come on, dummy, you won the game. Come on. Pick up your trophy.

And new fans need to learn by listening and watching
or they become/remain the ignorant fans people bitch about.
It is incredibly hard to listen to hockey play-by-play on the radio when you are new to hockey. Pat and Eddie speaking to the “casual” fan and the young hockey players has been a great way for me to learn, and I’m sure I’m not alone.
by Katherine215 on Feb 5, 2010 11:54 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
not complaining about new fans
i wanted to reply because I felt the objective of my post was lost. Just try muting the TV broadcast and turning on the radio (there is now a link on wgn’s website to sync game time with radio time). what i am trying to get across is that new and old fans alike will benefit from better play by play and commentary – which is provided by wiedeman and murray.
its better than listening to eddie yell out “give em tens” everytime there is a scuffle involving more than just the typical chirping.
plus i know how the casual fans that i am friends with watch the game, that is what i based my comment on. furthermore, i feel they would become more than simply casualy fans (maybe diehards like yourselves who follow the message boards) if they were listening to a more insightful, exciting broadcast while watching the game on tv.
by bender14 on Feb 8, 2010 12:13 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think the point of your post was lost
You didn’t understand why Pat and Eddie are not broadcasting to the average hockey fan, and I think the average hockey fan in Chicago has less knowledge than you think. They ARE broadcasting to the average fan.
If your friends who are casual fans are watching in the bar or at parties, they’re not listening to the commentary either way right? Regardless, I think both the radio and TV teams do a great job and I’ve learned a lot from listening to both.

Dumb Poll
Foley and Eddie appeal very well to the un-educated fan and educated hockey fan. While adding some spice to what could be a rather boring telecast somedays. Foley does a great job of assuming you know the game, and Eddie adds in his lessons for those less educated. Foley’s voice is synonymous with Hawks hockey, to get rid of him when they are finally back at the top would be a huge mistake. These guys love the Hawks and the game and it shows. Dumb poll.
