Well, so much for the angst/fantasy of him coming here. Clearly, that's a package the Hawks could have matched, though Bergfors and Oduya are very nice players. Can only conclude the Hawks weren't interested, which is fine. Anyway, I'm relieved he's in the East, and not on Kopitar's or Zetterberg's wing. Not yet anyway.

If you want to act like a Devil, well here you go.

I’m offficially happy that Stan didn’t try to match this offer for a rental player. Sure he could’ve matched with Bolland, Hjalmarsson, Olsen, and a 1st round pick but to me that would’ve been too much for a rental. That’s all he would have been for he’s already turned down offers of $70 million over 7 years and a whopping $101 million over 12 years.

Some of the best deals you make are the one you don’t make. In this case, it was a tremendous move for Stan not to make this deal.

I don’t see the Hawks making any significant moves before the trade deadline.

You do know hy he rejected those offers right?

You make it sound as if he wants more $ than what was offered. That’s fine if that’s your opinion but I bet he rejected those offers TO GET THE HELL OUT OF ATLANTA!

I’ll eat crow if i need to later but I’m willing to bet he’ll take a similar offer from another team he just didn’t want to stay in that wasteland of the NHL

Hot-lanta?

Does Kovy leaving town mean that this will be the second time an NHL team has left Atlanta? If they don’t continue to contend, which they won’t, could this be the death knell for the Thrashers?

As far as Kovalchuk goes

It should be interesting how the relationship between Kovalchuk and Lemaire blossoms. He drove Lafleur away from Montreal, Nicholls from New Jersey, and Gaborik from Minnesota. Needless to say superstars and Lemaire with his “system” don’t end up in a happy marriage.

Not knowing ANYthing about the NJ players, who would have been our “matches” for this trade?

by Preacher000 on Feb 4, 2010 11:32 PM CST reply actions

Versteeg, Barker, Beach/Aliu

Would be damn near identical. Barker isn’t as much on the defensive side as Oduya, so possibly Hjalmarsson would be more analagous, but either way, that’s basically the same package.

by synaptique on Feb 4, 2010 11:51 PM CST up reply actions

If NJ gave up their equivalent of Hjalmarsson, Versteeg, Beach/Aliu, AND a first round pick on top of that (granted it’s going to be a 25-29th overall pick), they definitely lost out on the trade, gaining only a rental for a few months.

Buuuuuut…I can see why they did it. This may be one of their last serious runs at the cup now that Marty is getting up there in years.

actually, Cormier's rep is as a strong, hard-hitting power forward

He didn’t really play dirtily until that hit on Tam. And it sounded like Lamoriello resisted adding Cormier to the package until the last minute, and that was what put the Devils ahead.

I haven’t really heard much about dirty hits from Beach, but he’s a chippy player and was kicked out of the Icehogs last year for some off-ice shenanigans.

It’s probably just an unfair perception given his reputation.

The nation of Sweden disagrees with your assessment of Cormier

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hzeOhL8_9g

He also had another “elbowing” issue in the QMJHL before the World Juniors. I think it’s safe to say he’s a fairly reckless player as opposed to Beach who is mostly just an agitator.

by El Duque's Raft on Feb 5, 2010 12:36 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, bad comparison

That’s an insult to Beach and agitators everywhere. Cormier has a history and seems totally unapologetic about his dirty play. He belongs on the Canucks.

by HungryHungryPanda on Feb 5, 2010 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

It's also not a fair comparison

because Beach actually has some offensive skills and is projected as a top 6 player. Cormier is projected as a 3rd/4th line center. Apples and oranges.

The Devils got Salmela too.

He’s not much yet, but there’s room for improvement. He’s a big dude on the blue line. And they swapped 2nd rounders so that should be a much earlier pick in what is supposed to be a pretty deep draft.

I figured Hossa might be able to ‘splain him a thing or two about backchecking. It became pretty apparent that was a pipe dream after seeing those numbers today. That’s a lot of rubles! I'm sure it's a pipe dream for Atlanta

But what if Atlanta’s offer were still the best NHL offer on the table after the season ends. Would Atlanta’s GM be a lucky genius to be able to sign him in the offseason after getting a group of young talent? I know these things rarely happen, but I don’t see anyone stateside matching that offer. I also don’t see a KHL team being able to actually write checks for that amount.

We'll see

if he’s aboutthe $ then He’ll return to ATL or if the KHL can match then he’ll go there. If he wants to play for a contender or a better market he’ll sign elsehwere.

Not sure the strength of this "source", but...

from Eklund….

On Scott Niedermayer…

Talking to a source today, since the deal went down. Scott Niedermayer is the #1 target of one of the teams who pulled out of this Kovalchuk race. A team that is hell bent on a Stanley Cup. The Chicago Blackhawks pulled out of the Kovalchuk sweeps because they are holding onto certain chips to try and land Scott Niedermayer.

Giving the rumor wheel a spin.

Yea we will see what happens before the deadline

They will move him.. Im very confident that they will. They have already made some moves and they are looking to get younger… They are not going to hang on to a player that they wernt going to resign anyways. Why hang on to something that still has value now when in a few months you will get nothing for him? Im no stock market expert but wouldnt you sell when your stocks peak rather than hang on to them and get nothing????

by SharpFTW10 on Feb 5, 2010 7:46 PM CST up reply actions

They have already made some moves and they are looking to get younger

Toskala and Giguere are the same age, and Jason Blake is 3 years older. Anaheim is $22+M under the cap for next season, and it’s not like they’re teeming with defensemen. If they want him back, they have the money.

by Crease Monkey on Feb 5, 2010 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

They just had to mention it.....
So the Thrashers will have $16 million in cap dollars freed up. The UFA market is rather weak, but Chicago Blackhawks will need to clear $9 million of their books just to squeeze under the cap so there will be some salaries moved via trade.

they sure as hell are interested in the Hawks cap. I saw they had a whole blog dedicated entirely to it back in December. BWA, I know your team blows and there’s subsequently not a lot to talk about there, but…really?

beyond this season...

Who would offer Kovalchuk a contract bigger than what Waddell offered? I’m sure there’s someone out there, just wondering who it would be.

I’m not sure exactly what Kovalchuk’s motives are. A lot are saying he clearly didn’t want to stay in Atlanta and was just using the money as an excuse, but discounting the fact that Waddell thought Kovalchuk would sign if he’d been offered what he was asking (because that’s not the most impartial source, is it?), didn’t Kovalchuk say he wanted to stay in Atlanta?

I know he also said, if not implied, that he wanted the Thrashers to show commitment to building a playoff contender, but how would paying him the maximum salary have helped achieve that? If what he really wants is for Atlanta to give him a good team, why are his demands based around a salary number that, correct me if I’m wrong, but no Cup contender would readily pay a single player?

Devils fans are, obviously, very happy with this development though. I’d be interested to see how Oduya’s loss affects them in the long run, but that team never seems to falter defensively anyway. I’m just glad he’s the East’s problem, at least for now.

Did anyone listen to Rocky's interview yesterday on Waddle & Silvy?

He made it pretty clear Kovy wouldn’t be coming here. And quite frankly, I’m happy we didn’t go after him. Our minimal problems are not at forward. We already have a log jam now that Bolland and Burish are back.

Rocky also said they’re not going to make a trade just to help their cap issues for next year. Everyone in the organization is focused on winning a Stanley Cup this year, and if a trade is going to be made, it will only be one that would make the team better now.

Rogers write-up covered most of the topics he discussed. Rocky is probably the nicest, coolest rich guy I’ve ever met. All he cares about is this team being successful. He never wants to be in a “rebuilding year” ever again. He talked about everything – the limo pictures (he totally didn’t think it was a big deal), the olympics (thinks it does nothing to help the NHL), trades (see above), his favorite scotch (Johnny Walker Blue), our goalie situation (we don’t need to trade for one), and his dad.
