Meme?

I might say “tremendously tremendous” is the original meme, while the others are variations on the theme. So, I would say the general pattern of adverbizing and adjective plus the original adjective is more of a theme than a meme.

by cliffkoroll on Mar 12, 2010 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, it was a stretch - but a snipe on pattern recognition deficeit didn't seem like as much fun

A meme (pronounced /ˈmiːm/, rhyming with “cream”1) is a postulated unit of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. (The etymology of the term relates to the Greek word μιμητισμός ([mɪmetɪsmos]) for “something imitated”.)2 Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes, in that they self-replicate and respond to selective pressures.3

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

A few of the reasons

some people might be freaking out is that
a) 5 of those games went into OT.
b) The two losses we gave up 4 unanswered goals to the Islanders and 5 to Scum.
c) The only game that they really looked good in was against Vancouver. (I know they beat the Oilers 5-2 but they were tied 2-2 after two periods.)

Competitive violence, that's why you're here!

by cdz3210 on Mar 12, 2010 9:03 AM CST up reply actions

Or

maybe it’s because of

a) panic button
b) Panic Button
c) PANIC BUTTON

by Scott13 on Mar 12, 2010 11:03 AM CST up reply actions

one way to look at it

is that somehow, despite a dip in performance, they’re finding ways to win. Sure, 5 of those games went to overtime and we’ve lost a shootout here and there, which playoffs don’t have, but we’ve never actually lost in 5 minutes of overtime, which playoffs DO have, in the 6 times this season that a game has been decided in that time frame.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

(Tweets @ChiBlackhawks and blogs at Blackhawks Down Low.)

by chiblackhawks on Mar 12, 2010 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

Really?

I didn’t realize we never lost in the 5 minute OT this season. Interesting. That still doesn’t negate the fact that in many of those games we shouldn’t have gone to OT in the first place. Someone yesterday pointed out the PP lack of production and how that alone is perhaps more significant than the France vs. Finland issue.

by Badgerdano on Mar 12, 2010 11:33 AM CST up reply actions

A win is a win is a win?

Regarding the PP. I just posted a comment here on the I’d Make a King thread. I’m really interested in hearing other perspectives because I’m not a PP strategy wiz, but I know some commenters on here having coaching and/or organized playing experience, or just know their shit. I figure it’s a much better topic to dive into instead of the goalie debate.

I’m not suggesting the PP couldn’t be better, but I don’t think we should necessarily expect top 3 of this team until they develop their abilities further, coupled with personnel changes in the future.

Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Mar 12, 2010 12:52 PM CST up reply actions

The PP, in my experience, starts from the net out. Niemi and Huet are at fault here, too.

by ChicoMaki on Mar 12, 2010 5:56 PM CST up reply actions

Great point!

Both goalies are tied for last in the league in points, with zero.

by cliffkoroll on Mar 12, 2010 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

Atrociously atrocious are those European goal-less goalies

OK, sorry I started all that. It’s stupidly stupid. No one can sound as ridiculously ridiculous as Edzo.

by Badgerdano on Mar 12, 2010 6:26 PM CST up reply actions

We've never lost in a 5 minute 4 on 4 overtime.

Which the playoffs DON’T have. With the skating ability of the Hawks defense, there really isn’t another team that can compete with them 4 on 4. But, like the shootout, this is moot in the playoffs.

Tremendously tremendous

by synaptique on Mar 12, 2010 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

now you're just being difficult

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

by chiblackhawks on Mar 12, 2010 5:15 PM CST up reply actions

I think the point is fair

The Hawks are ferocious on 4 on 4 (except for the stupid Wings game.)

This won’t help in the playoffs unless they take a bunch of offsetting penalties, a la the ’80s Oilers.

Think about it Q.

by cliffkoroll on Mar 12, 2010 5:50 PM CST up reply actions

sometimes i wonder

if they actually have that as part of their game plan. They’ve had a few of those so far this year, haven’t they?

Waddle and Silvy interviewed Sharp this morning

and they mentioned that someone in the crowd was holding a “Hey Burish, My Grandma’s Pregnant” sign. Sharp simply stated that Burish is a single guy and that he wouldn’t be surprised if it was true, or words to that effect. It was pretty funny.
