Well, The First 57 Were Ok: Morons 2 - Flyers 3
That was the kind of ending usually reserved for when I go to see the Hawks in an opposing building. I know there are probably some people who want me to rant and rave and declare it all over. But I'm just not that upset. It's an awful way to lose a hockey game, and a moronic one, but there are some positives to be taken, which we'll get to. But the first is that for 57 minutes, the Hawks played one of their better games against a team that I still think is going to make some serious noise in the postseason.
Even the though the first 40 minutes were scoreless, they were two of the more entertaining periods of the year. The Hawks carried most of the play, but that didn't necessarily translate into prime chances. The shot totals look imposing, but the Flyers did a masterful job of keeping the Hawks to the outside and clogging shooting lanes. The Hawks could have easily ended up having 60 shots, and still wouldn't have had many opportunities as you would think. I only remember Michael Leighton making a handful of big saves.
And then Brent Seabrook happened. I don't know how much more patience we can have for Biscuit. We're going on three months of ass-hoolery from him. At what point does Q decide to swap Seabrook and Johnsson and let Seabrook find his game against some less pressure and skill? We've got to be able to at least see it from here. Anyway, Seabrook started the events with just a moronic turnover in the corner that Dan Carcillo was only too happy to take advantage of, before he found Simon Gagne all alone in the circle. Why Seabrook was trying a blind pass into the middle when he had all of the sideboards open will be studied by scientists for ages. Truth be told, it was only a matter of time before Seabrook got burned. He was hesitant and out of position multiple times today.
But the Hawks responded, and on the power play even! Q finally realized putting Campbell on the 1st unit would work better, and then the 2nd unit chipped in after some nice play from Brouwer, Versteeg, and Hossa, which Versteeg converted. In fact, Steeger was everywhere today.
It got better. Someone name a Hawk of the past 25 years who had a quicker release than Marian Hossa. Take your time. Leighton never had a chance.
But then Brent Sopel happened. It's fine when he gets beat for speed, I don't expect him to outskate anyone. But to get out-muscled? That can't happen. Credit to Scott Hartnell, he made a hell of a play. But that's Sopel's job, no? To fight off big forwards? Right?
From there, I'm sure everyone assumed the game would fizzle into overtime. Apparently, so did the Hawks. Especially in the last 10 seconds. Look, Toews and Kane not skating back is not something we have to worry about happening regularly (despite what some neanderthals still claim about Kane). They got the ultimate lesson today on why not to. Pronger was all alone in front.
Observations and Ruminations
-This was Huet's best game since December. He was looking for the puck, and looked confident again. Long may it continue. But he's only going to be as good as his defense lets him, and they hung him out to dry in the 3rd.
-This was also Versteeg's best game in some time. He's been great this week, and you can tell because that naive, country-boy swagger is back.
-Brent Sopel absolutely cannot dress tomorrow, or the Caps might score 7. It's not his game.
-It's time to bump Buff off the power play. He's big, yes, but he doesn't fight hard in front of the net or along the boards. Your first unit has to be Campbell/Johnsson behind Daydream Nation and Hossa. Yes, Sharp is a wonderful sniper. BUT HE'S NOT MARIAN FUCKING HOSSA. As weird as it sounds to say about the second leading scoring d-man in the league, Keith is not really a power play QB. His shots get blocked far too often, and he's not as smooth with the puck as 51 Phantom. Put him on unit 2 with Sharp, Versteeg, and Brouwer, and either Seabrook or have one of Q's beloved forwards play point.
-Kane wasn't very good today, but that's been a rare occurrence. He tried to get to cute and obviously didn't hustle at the end. He's looking for Sharp too much, and hence Sharp reverts to that floating thing again, waiting for Kaner to hit his tape. Knock it off.
-The PK was nails, though, against a very good power play.
-I can't express how much I love that Ville Leino sucks. All I heard for far too long was how he was the next Red Wings legend, because everyone's research on him went as far as figuring out that he's Scandanavian and a Wing. So he must be good, right? The dude is brain damage, and it's wonderful.
-I don't know if Michael Leighton can keep up this standard, but if he can the Flyers are an intriguing team to watch. They're one of two teams in the East that can skate with the Caps, and they can go the other way too if they need to. No one will fancy catching them in the playoffs.
-Someone should take game film of Scott Hartnell and show it to Jack Skille, and tell him, "Do this."
Player of The Game
He was all over the ice, and it appears the knowledge that he's going to finish the year here has done him a world of good. Oh, and Ladd and Madden can make up for his occasional silliness.

Wonderful recap, Sam
I found myself saying “I concur” to pretty much every observation.
Let’s hope this game, especially the ending, wakes this team the fuck up. Otherwise, Ovie and the Caps are going make the Hawks look like asshats.

Capitals
They lost their last one too so they’ll be out for blood for sure. I sure hope the Hawks want it more. Especially since it’s a late morning start (again). At least when they lose a night game I can drown my sorrow in some alcohol and go to sleep soon thereafter. When it’s a morning game I’m forced to suffer the rest of the day

Kane and Sharp
It appeared Kane and Sharp were trying desperately to get Sharp a goal against his former team. He hasn’t been there in, what, five years, so I’m not sure why he’d have such a boner for a team he barely played for. Anyway, this game had all of the earmarks of one of those “can we get this over with so we can start the playoffs” efforts. Not terribly bothered by the outcome, but it’s maddening how it came apart in the last two minutes.
Maybe there is some way we can get Seabs to stop trying to be Keith with his passes and make simple plays again.
I’d much prefer it if we played the way we did through the first half, and get the results we had in the first half … but if it’s not to be, then bring on the lessons and learn them quickly.
I agree 100% with the sky-is-not-falling tone, Sam, but I also think that this team should be smarter by now than their untimely lapses show them to be. I am worried a little by that … right now, though, ya, it’s still only a little.

FUCK. MY. ACTUAL. LIFE.
I’m pissed off because I was at the Red Wings game last weekend, and they should have learned their lesson then, and apparently they didn’t. My friend and I had fucking amazing seats (halfway up at ice level, right behind the goal where the ’Hawks shoot twice) and then that bullshit happened. Whatever, I have a 12-pack of Yuengling waiting for me.
I can’t decide if I want them to get angry and play out of their minds tomorrow, or if they need one last instance of humiliation by the most dangerous offensive team in the league to finally drive the point home. Usually I’d be inclined to say the former, but I’m irrationally mad right now, having seen this three-minute meltdown in person — adfl;skjadsf;kladsfkladsfjadsfjdf fuck it. GO HOME MAD, KILL SOME BITCHES TOMORROW.
Bonus source of pain: They were giving away life-sized Pronger posters at the game. Anyone need a 6’6" dartboard?

I know Huet's not the vocal type
but maybe now is the time for him to go a little bit ballistic at his teammates. I don’t even know. I need to be drunker.
There was an article in last week’s issue of SI about Kansas basketball, and how it’s the top-ranked team in the nation, yet they infuriate their head coach because they don’t know how to live up to their own potential. The entire time I was reading the article, I was thinking — this is the 09-10 Blackhawks season in a fucking nutshell. There have been some awesome highs, but also some inexplicable lows.
Although I am 100% on the Huet had a very good game boat
I don’t think he’s in any position to say much yet. Might get a stick up his ass.

LAST SIX SECONDS OF THE GAME
YOU CAN’T EVEN STAY ON THE ICE FOR SIX FUCKING SECONDS
GODDAMMIT
UGH ANGRY ALL OVER AGAIN
Fucking yes
Why the fuck did Kane skate off with 6 seconds to go, expecting his replacement to be able to get in defensive position in time and stop a 3 on 2? Jesus fucking Christ.
Repeating from prior thread (after the COMMENT WAR)
Allow me to introduce a point for consideration:
Everybody needs to play better. The team, as a whole, needs to improve.
See, the thing that I’ve seen since the break — and you have too — is the Second Period of Doom. That didn’t happen today. Instead, we get treated to a dreadful end to a (frankly) middling performance. [ADD: Sam thought the first two periods were good. I was less impressed — it wasn’t total tomfoolery, but it wasn’t overwhelming me.]
The goalies need to get better and more consistent. (You saw that today from Cris. May it continue.) The defense? My God — that has to get better. [ADD: Sopel, on the tying goal, was RIGHT THERE. He could have made a play. Hell: he could have tackled the guy, went into the box and leave it to the PK to bail him out. On further review, he has to take that penalty.] The offense has been the best phase of the game, but the power play (apart from the breakthrough today) has been dreadful lately.
[And may I add: Take a look at team stats for a second. Shots allowed per game stands at 24.4. No other team in the league is even close. Devils are second, at 27.4. The D needs to regain that form — not allowing turnovers, playing tight on their men and creating turnovers, etc. etc. etc. We return to that, and things will get right, quickly.
But also: Shots made per game? Again, tops in the league, comfortably (34.3, versus 33.0 for the Caps in second). We had plenty today too, but the D creating turnovers as opposed to forking over the puck will improve that line further.]
Team sport, team effort, team improvement. Let’s not argue about who killed who (/grail) — the point is that this team has to decide what its intentions are and (hopefully) take corrective action. Now.

sopel and seabrook
thanks guys, thanks.
Seabrook wasn’t even pressured into that first giveaway, but somehow he managed to cough it up.
Give Hendry a chance to win the sixth dman spot. I don’t care if Sopel is some cult hero because he blocks shots, that Hartnell goal was inexcusable and it cost us this game. Johnsson was starting to look good with Hendry. It feels like Sopel has Matt Walker syndrome this year; anyone he is paired with plays below their potential, not that johnsson was bad today.
I’m president of the Kane fanclub, but damnit, don’t go for a change there. Remember the play you made on Crosby in the Olympics, how about you make a defensive play like that for your real team when the game is on the line.
Nice game by Huet. The one save he could’ve made was on Hartnell’s goal, but he was probably mesmerized by Sopel’s stupidity.
"In an ideal world I would have all 10 fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching."
I gotta agree on everything
but with your view of the second goal. There is no way in hell that should have gone in. Yeah yeah yeah, Sopel got beat, but guess what? That’s what a goalie is for: to make the saves. Sopel stayed with his man, Huet didn’t come out to contest the shot like he had been ALL GAME, which is good. It ain’t solely Huet’s fault, but that was a save he coulda made if he came out and contested it. That was the only soft/bad goal he gave up. If he can play with this much confidence and effort every game, he should be the #1.
On a side note though, Sopel DID look like he was about ready to retire today…freakin’ looked like he was Chelios’ age…
Great recap - total truth throughout. If Huet layed this way every game, there'd not be all the debate
If Huet played the way he did today – AND managed to pull one of those 3 goals out of his ass and made the big save, that would be real championship level goaltending (i.e. making the routine, no softies and the occasional ‘pull one out of your ass’ save).
All three goals were defensive lapses by the team in front of him, leading to reasonable non-saves.
Just concerned
If it works don't go and F*** it up!

Keith's Shots
Very nice recap. Agree except taking Keith off the PP. Hasn’t Keith scored the most goals for a defenseman on the Hawks this year? I think his shots get through a lot compared to the others. He was even the PP guy on the Canadian team, wasn’t he? Not sure why he’d be a 2nd stringer here.
Here’s hoping most of tomorrow’s postings have the headline “All is Forgiven!”
Well, off to a good bye party for a buddy leaving the states for California. ;-)
These are the dog days of the season
Caps lost last night and the Sharks did this afternoon. I hate daygames and another one Sunday when we lose an hour to daylight savings is going to suck. Hopefully Q tucks the boys in by 10 so they have some fire tomorrow and don’t have another meltdown like last week. That would make the upcoming west coast trip more dangerous.
by Duck99 on Mar 13, 2010 6:26 PM CST via mobile reply actions
Didn't see the game and now I'm glad I missed it
I spent the afternoon at my son’s end of the year hockey tournament. He’s 7 and in his first year of hockey. (He’s, like, 3 years behind the other kids but he’s got good hockey sense so he’s on the traveling team.) He played goalie for the first time ever—first time he’s ever even had the pads on. He gave up 6 goals. Mostly to one kid on the other team that had 4 goals—he’s the coach’s son and was pretty much skating circles around every one else.
My son was pretty upset about giving up the goals, but I told him to just have fun. And he did make some great saves.
But it made me wonder…are we still having fun watching the Hawks? Are we so “Cup or nothing” that we’re missing out on enjoying watching this amazingly talented team play? I certainly want the Cup and this team has the talent to win it, but it’s getting to be painful watching these games. Even when we win, it’s not good enough.
I don’t know if I can handle this when we’re not even at playoff intensity yet. Somehow, the fun seems to be missing from these games lately.

I think the issue
…is that it’s not out of the question to think that this team CAN win it all. Once we start thinking that way, the next logical question is “why not?” And of course, not being content to leave said question unanswered, we start looking for reasons why not. Goaltending is inconsistent. Defensemen are wearing down. Steeger still can’t get the puck deep. Kane isn’t looking to shoot like he did early in the year. Hossa hasn’t scored 100 goals. Whatever. After we’ve crawled into the darkest corners of the deepest closets and pulled out every last reason why not, we’ve done our duty as practical dreamers, as opposed to the true dreamers who simply ask the question and leave it at that.
We all have that memory of the team we blindly adored when we were kids, rooted for fiercely no matter the score, and never ever gave up on. And we all have that moment where we cross over the line, when blind fandom isn’t enough to fill us up. I maintain that for each of us, that moment was the first time we were unable to leave the question of “why not” unanswered.
The good news is that when it seems like a good use of time to dig into those dark corners and find all those reasons why not, it’s a pretty good sign that your team is damned good. Otherwise why would you spend any time trying to answer the question at all? Tomorrow’s another day. Go get ’em, boys!

random interesting stat
Keith had zero shots on net but eight (8) shots that were blocked. From the play by play, four were at even strength and four were on the PP.
I still think he needs some help at the point on power plays; I get that Sharp is a right-handed shot, but he rarely stays on the point to take them, and oftentimes Keith looks overwhelmed trying to direct things by himself, leading to a lot of one-and-done chances for the first PP unit.
Not the end...
….all the people freaking out about the loss today will proclaim the Hawks champs after we win tomorrow.

great recap
both kane and toews have not been playing their best hockey in the last 3ish games. I think I read somewhere that toews is a -3 in the last few games. the only thing i can think of to blame is the olympics catching up with them. seabrook desperately needs to pick up his game or switch up partners. frustrating because huet actually played well. i really wanted him to get a win.
One thing everyone should agree on
Ditch the damn third sweaters. Can’t tell who is who (stuck watching philly feed in sd) and it seems that every time they use them they play as bad as they look.
Paraphrasing from the opposition broadcast “I am disappointed to say the Blackhawks are wearing the third jerseys, not the good looking regular ones”
A game that is effectively being played at 10:30 tomorrow sucks ass. But hopefully the caps don’t put up a football score.

Thank you for saying this sir. I think its looks terrible when the other team is not also wearing a throwback.
With tomorrow being primetime I wouldn’t even doubt if they wore them again.

The first were better
I actually liked the old throwbacks which had the Red and Black with White Stripes and the old school Indian Head. They used to wear them a lot in the Roenick and Cheli days.
I would have enjoyed those for the Winter Classic.

I absolutely hate the original 3rd jerseys
If a team can’t do anything more imaginative that putting out a black version of their regular jersey, then they shouldn’t even bother with it.
Oh yeah...
Our powerplay blows donkey balls. Just keep passing it to the nearest teammate. Now THAT’S how you win games, right Hawks?
Seabrook sucks. He’s sucked for a while now. I don’t know what it is with him, but he’s taken a horrible turn in the opposite direction. Better fix that before the playoffs unless you want to lose your spot to Hendry, who’s played pretty damn well this year.
It sucks because great things have been happening lately and we’re still losing. Ladd getting his trick vs Detroit…we lose. Versteeg getting out of a slump…we lose 2 of 3. Huet playing one of his best games of the season…we lose. Turnovers seem to be our worst enemy in the last few weeks.
All goes back to what many have stated
