Around SBN: How Not To Criticize Tom Brady For The Patriots' Loss

Past the name calling, why Huet must be on the bench

No matter how "pissed" he was after this afternoon's meltdown, chokers choke. There is no way to make a donkey into a horse. Huet is not as winner. That is the difference between an Osgood (we may hate the scum, but he wins), as an example and Huet. Osgood plays better when it matters most, Huet finds a way to lose. Play Niemi, his play is better when it matters most. Niemi also makes plays to bail out his teamates mistakes, thats what winning goalies do. Huet rarely comes up with the big save to bail out his team (can't remember one actually). Huet is defended to the death by the media, but that can not defend what we all see. He has the heart of a sheep.

Coach Q, you are a good coach, we are glad you're here.  Soon we all will wonder why you continue to put our season at risk by playing Huet.  I can tell by the look on your face that you know Huet will never be a winner.  I can also see that you believe that Niemi is.  Let him play.  We have no time anymore to worry about feelings.  Huet can sit on the bench and mope.  I don't care.  I want the cup.

I thought I just read a comment from you saying

that you will NEVER play internet police (or something like that). See, some things are just so absurd they make you break your word.

I may be wrong, but does anyone else think Ghost Soldier just signed in under a different profile? This is almost EXACTLY what he was saying in the GDT.

I may also be wrong, but in Ghost Soldier's defense, I really don't think so

I believe it’s just a general recycling of what we’ve been hearing from a section of the fan-base that still insists one of the goalies is clearly better than the other. Which is fine, but it’s all in the presentation. This is an example of very bad presentation, like serving baloney sandwiches at a $1,000/plate fundraiser. I want a refund.

Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

Tip for Hawk fans…from a Canucks fan…

Be a little more forgiving of your goalies ups and downs, or they run the risk of getting way overstressed. It is the hardest position in hockey for expectations, and those two guys never got where they are for no good reason. They are professionals, but human, and you have pretty much the best record in the NHL. Quit @#$%ing about your goalies! They are good enough for a Goddamn Presidents Trophy, and you have a good shot at a Cup…so quit WHINING ABOUT NIEMI AND HUET! YOU HAVE THE BEST DEFENCE CORE IN THE NHL!

There are no perfect teams, but there are perfect team games.

which I thought was great, but of course the same guy told him “Worry about your own team and goalie. You know, the one who got lit up like a christmas tree by the hawks last year?

Allow me to repeat...uh, myself,

I call Douche-nozzle. If goalies like Osgood and Howard are getting credit for winning when their defense and offense bail them out, why are Huet and Neimi getting the blame when their D and O hang them out to dry?

Kane was leaving the ice during the final Flyers rush

What the hell was that about? A line change? I doubt it. with 4-5 sec to go and the opposition is attempting a final rush?

Essentially, Huet had a 4 on 2 coming at him.

And the tying goal — was it Seabrook? I don’t remember — the lone Hawks defender was undressed by the Flyers’ forward. That was an easy, open shot that just about any goalie would have trouble with.

And today, Sunday….I don’t see how Niemi gets blamed….but, he HAS to control rebounds much better. That’s his major fault.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Mar 14, 2010 2:42 PM CDT reply actions

Part of his "fundamentals" you could say

I think when Huet has issues with rebound control, it’s because he’s “off his game” and I haven’t noticed him being bad on that count much.

You’re right, this is probably something Niemi needs to develop a bit — he relies a lot on his athletic ability and is often just blocking the puck away and stuff; his style isn’t giving him much of a chance and covering or absorbing the puck. I don’t know if it’s something that can be developed in such a short amount of time, though…

by VerStig on Mar 14, 2010 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Probably with experience....you'd hope

Niemi could begin to incorporate that style into his game. (Of course, in shoot-out attempts this wouldn’t be a problem at all!) But when you watch closely, you can see when he has the opportunity he’s always trying to direct the puck to his left or right instead of smothering it.

Obviously in a split-second decision he just wants to stop the puck, but there are just too many juicy rebounds left hanging out there by Niemi. But he has the potential to be a great goalie.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Mar 15, 2010 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions

The problem with shootout wins

I like both goalies, honest I do, but I don’t know why people clamor for Niemi as our playoff guy citing his shoot-out wins (not saying you are SDSJM, just you mentioned rebounds not mattering in shoot-outs)…
The issue is you don’t shoot-out for the Cup. So Niemi coming up big in a shoot-out victory is great and all, and I love that extra point…but come April, that doesn’t matter…

by PDef on Mar 18, 2010 8:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Shootout Goalie

Of course there are no shootouts in the playoffs but does that mean you shouldn’t consider shootout performance when evaluating goalie skills? I think a good shootout goalie should have more success against the occasional breakaways that will occur during the playoffs. That’s obvious But what being able to stop shooters 1 on 1 , and here I mean typically the very best of the best shooters in the world, means is that goalie has reflexes and skills that are better than goalies who don’t do as well in shootouts. That does not mean they will be hall of fame goalies, but it does give some confidence in the basic fundamentals and most importantly, things you can’t teach (reflexes, anticipation of moves, etc.) The added skills during games like positioning, looking around screens, covering the posts, puck handling, smothering rebounds and such I feel are much more teachable and can be improved with experience. So when I see a goalie that has exceptional shootout skills and is basically a 1 year player in the NHL and I compare them to a goalie most people say is more experienced but not significantly better, I want the guy with the basic skills to play so we can see if the experience he gets will make them better than the veteran goalie who has already shown his ceiling. And if that young goalie can learn enough to be “as good as” the other guy, I’d rather have the guy who has the reflexes to make the occasional outstanding saves and stop more breakaways on my playoff team (assuming they are not total idiots in the other fundamentals) than the guy who might play slightly better fundamentally, but is not as quick, agile and athletic.

by husler777 on Mar 18, 2010 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Get Huet on a roll...

start him 10 or so games in a row – the guy has a resume of hot streaks at the end of a season. He’s dragged 2 teams kicking and screaming into the playoffs and nearly single-handedly stole a series when he was a Cap.

He’s gonna be terrible at first…but wait a bit and you’ll see why he’s very respected around the league and earns big bucks. When he plays desperate high pressure hockey – Huet is an elite goalie. Right now, he’s out of sync and looks like he doesn’t give a shit.

Remember game 5 in the WCF? Remember game 4?

Huet needs to get a few game 4 type performances out of his system before he finds his game 5 form. I won’t be worried one bit once Huet gets the nod.

by Bluliner on Mar 14, 2010 8:29 PM CDT reply actions

I've seen Huet 10 games in a row

What happened was just the opposite of what you said. He wasn’t terrible at first….he was very good…then after 5 or 6 games he fell apart. Look up last year when Khabby got injured.

Respected around the league? And where did you get that? From the ex-players and broadcasters that say Hawks can’t go far in the playoffs with him? From Coach Q who desperately wants him to take the reins as clear number 1 but can’t bring himself to assign him that role based on his play? Or from the tears of all the teams that cried when the Hawks wouldn’t accept all their top players when they DESPERATELY tried to trade for Huet before the deadline? He is in Chicago because he is NOT respected enough for other teams to want to make a trade with the Hawks to get him and his salary. Speaking of which…Highly paid means good? Maybe somewhere else, but highly paid in Chicago can also mean Dale Tallon was your GM during free agency.

Finally….high pressure elite…ELITE???!!!!!! goalie. Besides at SCH, if you put a picture of Huet with the words “ELITE” and “JOURNEYMAN” and told people to pick one, somehow I don’t see the elite label sticking too well. Hell, I’’ll take my chances picking a name out of a hat from the NHL starting goalies before I’d pick Huet for my team.

Sides that, I enjoyed your post.

Where's today's rebuttal?

Just replace Huet’s name with Niemi and vice-versa. Voila! And so the world turns…

by cliffkoroll on Mar 15, 2010 12:15 PM CDT reply actions

The dumbest thing that he said

is that Huet never makes any good saves. In fact Huet makes some of the best saves i’ve ever seen. Huet’s major problem is focus and he tends to let in some soft goals

And if you want to see one

search youtube for “Nice glove save by Cristobal Huet!” and watch the first video. 5-on-3 situation and you’re telling me he needs to make BETTER saves? Come on….

by PDef on Mar 18, 2010 8:45 AM CDT up reply actions

exactly he has the skill..

just needs to tighten up his focus, not let in any soft goals, and hope to god his d heals and starts playing like the beginning of the season
