Around SBN: MLB Trade Deadline: Astros' fans react to Oswalt trade

1. Ovie got a two-game suspension, which sounds just about right to me. He's a repeat offender, and hopefully the message gets through to him, because when he's not pulling this crap he is simply a joy to watch.

2. You DirecTV viewers have VS. back. A deal has been struck, so you can keep your playoff beard growing within the confines of your home.

I’m hoping there’s some sinister connection between both these pieces of news breaking at the same time (well, they did on Twitter). Someone make one up!

1. That sounds about right too. I don’t think of him as a dirty player, but I want a message sent about dirty hits. Of course it’s maddening nothing at all happened to Cooke, but all the “don’t suspend Ovie because they didn’t suspend Cooke”…uh, isn’t there a phrase about “two wrongs”? Oh, and I’m trying to keep myself away from Capitals blogs today…

2. Aw, but the Versus/DirecTV debacle was a staple of every list of “top 10 things wrong with the NHL/hockey”! What will take its place now? (I was told: Versus itself. I don’t have cable so I only know of it from online feeds…)

As happy as I am to see Ovie suspended

If I had to pick only one of them, I would have rather seen that gutless goon Cooke get suspended.

Oh, thank God

It’s great to hear about the suspension. Ovie is one of my favorite players, and it would be a shame for his line-walking to get out-of-hand due to league protection or indifference.

Why... Why are you never funny?

Can you just try and phase it out? You know, for those of us who highly enjoy your LOL-inducing rants about them? (maybe I’m just speaking for myself here)

Either way, it’s good news for me. I’m personally TV service provider-less but my friend’s got DirectTV so I’m all set. I dropped an exorbitant amount of money at various bars during the playoffs last year just so I could watch the games.

that is what I don't understand about ovechkin

Why would you play like that when you are such a skilled guy? Every hockey player knows what plays you can and can’t make without hurting someone. It has happened enough where you have to think he simply is a dirty player. It’s just odd because guys that play dirty often do it in lieu of skill.

but 2 does seem right, I wanted 4-5 but i knew i wasn’t going to get that.

As added punishment, while he is suspended he should be required to watch the canada-russia olympic hockey game over and over.

by SLoop on Mar 15, 2010 5:50 PM CDT reply actions

He is fucking intense

Basically cannot control himself sometimes. I don’t think he is actually going out to hurt somebody. Who knows maybe he has a massive case of ADD or something.

by 815Sox on Mar 15, 2010 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

That’s his game, aggressive. If you saw the NBC Pens-Caps, Pierre McGuire called him “the ultimate predator in the National Hockey League.” To an extent, it’s true. He generally doesn’t headhunt, but he makes those borderline hits (and should have been getting called more often—not as much this season, as his hitting is down per game). He went in for the hit and went in too early/late, getting caught in the area where Campbell flies into the boards after any hit.

But the “borderline” hits are piling up, and still lot of people are commenting that they don’t want him to change his style or throttle down. What I say to that is there are rules in hockey. This isn’t ultimate fighting. Ovi should know better, but he really doesn’t seem to get it.

Ever since the beginning of the season he’s seemed more fired up than before. I’m not really sure why, though that 6-2 loss in Game 7 probably contributes. He’s acting like a man on a mission. I like what he brings even like this, but he should save it more for the playoffs.

by red army line on Mar 16, 2010 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

man on a mission?

or a man retarded?

Seriously, unless this guy is legitimately unbalanced or has real mental problems, it’s not that fucking hard to play physical and not take cheap shots. Boxers are pretty intense and I don’t seem to hear about guys boxing dirty that often. If this guys is as nuts as mike tyson, he needs to be taken out.

by SLoop on Mar 16, 2010 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions

That's way hyperbolized, SLoop...

and we obviously disagree on what a cheap shot is. A slash after a guy decks you, that’s a cheap shot for me. But I saw an ill-advised and horribly-timed hit that didn’t connote illegal intentions in the first place.
Of course a player can play physical and not take cheap shots. But when a player hits as often as Ovechkin, you certainly are going to have some hits that end up badly. It’s simple numbers.
My “man on a mission” analogy reflected how he has been trying to hit harder and is hitting in that gray legal-illegal area more often (though cutting down on the charging, but more borderline interference and such). And yes, I have seen a ton of Ovechkin every season since his rookie season.

seriously...

after watching all his “famous” incidents, he is like a crazied assassin who shoots someone and then can’t understand why they’re bleeding.

I can’t believe i’m going to say this, but i agree with don cherry. Someone is going to line him up and hit him good. I hope it doesn’t end his career or hurt him too bad because when he’s not playing dirty, he’s a benefit to the league and fun to watch, but someone is really going to hurt him sooner or later and it’s tough to say he won’t deserve every bit of it.

I do not think its fair to say that Alex O is doing it on purpose. You could tell he knew he fucked up after her hit Soupy yesterday. He needs a message sent to him that he has to cut it out. The NHL is trying to cut down on this shit and they sent the appropriate message today.

Totally sucks to lose Campbell though. No way in hell he is going to be able to play for the rest of the season

Correct me if I'm wrong

I don’t get to see a lot of Cap games but it seems like he’s a bully, he only hits guys when they’re not looking or smaller. In the Canada game when the bigger boys came looking for him he went in a shell only coming out when a Russian girl was video taping him at the airport.

by activestick on Mar 15, 2010 7:48 PM CDT reply actions

i’m sorry, none of this makes any sense. ovechkin routinely hits people straight on, and routinely hits players much larger than he is. see the olympics: the jagr hit, and knocking chara off his feet three times in the same game. the guy hits people…a lot. he doesn’t discriminate based on size, and he his ratio of clean hits to penalized hits is pretty huge (his first dose of supplementary discipline was the peverley hit last october…his 847th regular season hit).

by Natty Bumppo on Mar 15, 2010 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe i'm still just pissed about Campbell

but I didn’t say all his hits were dirty, just it seems like he picks his spots, from memory the hits on Chara he caught him off guard.

by activestick on Mar 15, 2010 8:33 PM CDT reply actions

well you did say ALL his hits were “when guys weren’t looking or smaller.” so that’s about as inclusive as you can get.

the ovechkin/chara hits aren’t on youtube because of IOC rights violations. but trust me, they were straight on and they were devastating. chara saw him coming on two of the three, but couldn’t get out of the way. they were all legal—either while chara had the puck or examples of finishing a check.

here’s AO on hal gill, another behemoth.

and just because..

here is chara vs. ovechkin, earlier this season (2-minute penalty, no game misconduct, no suspension).
here is craig adams vs. ovechkin, earlier this season (no penalty, no game misconduct, no suspension).
here is david koci vs. mike green, earlier this season (2-minute penalty, 1 game misconduct, no suspension).

[FTR, i don’t think chara deserved a penalty or a suspension…caps examples because i’m a caps fan, so it’s what i’m familiar with.]

by Natty Bumppo on Mar 15, 2010 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions

my bad

koci on green: 5-minute penalty, 1 game misconduct, no suspension.

by Natty Bumppo on Mar 15, 2010 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions

That Koci hit on Green was fucking disgraceful

Main difference I see on all of those hits is that the puck was in play. On the Campbell hit, the puck was not in play. And yes, I know that everyone is taught to finish their check, etc… but I think all players, not just AO, have to be aware of when it’s dangerous. I think Toews had the best quote I’ve read so far:

“We’re hoping for the best with Brian. There’s so much of that stuff [head injuries] going on now, it’s pretty frustrating the players don’t take a stand against something like that and say, ‘You know what, we have to respect ourselves a little bit more,’ and know it’s not all about the flashy hit. You have to know when there’s a dangerous situation and you can really hurt somebody and be smarter about it.”

by HungryHungryPanda on Mar 15, 2010 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed and good point.

And further to my comment below, Natty’s argument is akin to the drunk driver telling the judge that he has driven home drunk on many other occasions without killing anyone.

by Badgerdano on Mar 15, 2010 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Not trying to stand up for a Caps fan

But you’re making it kinda hard for me to agree with you. The drunk driving analogy doesn’t really make sense to me and is a bit inappropriate.

by HungryHungryPanda on Mar 15, 2010 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Welcome to your opinion.

I don’t mind anyone disagreeing with me, but I don’t see how the analogy is inappropriate.

by Badgerdano on Mar 15, 2010 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Didn't mean inappropriate in a non-PC sense

Just that I think it doesn’t really do its job, probably a bad choice of word. More appropriate would be “telling the judge that he has driven many times without killing someone.” The implication is that AO plays in a constant state of “drunkenness”.

by HungryHungryPanda on Mar 15, 2010 9:32 PM CDT up reply actions

i’d just like to see more consistency across the board from colin campbell’s office, as i’m sure we all would. i’d like full explanations to accompany every suspension.

by Natty Bumppo on Mar 15, 2010 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

Let the record show, I agreed with a Caps fan. LOL

by Badgerdano on Mar 15, 2010 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions

it was the adams hit that the most reasonable commenters at japers’ have a problem with. i see only two differences between the adams hit on ovechkin and the ovechkin hit on campbell:

1) AO hit head-first into the boards, campbell didn’t.
2) campbell was hurt on the play, AO wasn’t.

if anything, AO catches campbell kind-of-on-the-back, kind-of-on-the-shoulder (the side angle shows both of soupy’s numbers) while adams delivers the shove directly to AO’s #8. i’ll just post my opinion and then back slowly away:

AO was given a 5-minute penalty and a game misconduct. his team went down a man for 5 minutes AND his team’s best player was on the shelf for the rest of the game. this is why penalties were created, to penalize. i would have thought suspensions were for plays that go above and beyond a typical penalty—in this case a boarding penalty—to show intent or malice. in my view, this was absolutely a boarding penalty, even a major boarding penalty because of soup’s injuries. but the suspension doesn’t jive with everything else i’ve been seeing from the league office.

by Natty Bumppo on Mar 15, 2010 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Campbell being injured, and the severity of his injuries

are the reason ovechkin got suspended. If campbell would’ve gotten up and played later in the game, I don’t think ovechkin would’ve been suspended.

I’m not saying that is right or wrong, I’m just saying that’s why.

Caps fans should be glad Ovi got suspended. He’ll get a couple games to rest which will help considering he didn’t get much olympic break rest. The Caps are going to end up the top seed in the East and will end up with the President’s Trophy, this suspension really shouldn’t matter for them.

"In an ideal world I would have all 10 fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching."

by hackerar on Mar 15, 2010 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions

it's not about whether or not the Caps will suffer w/o him, you see

Some Caps fans are worried about him losing the Art Ross Trophy, because it’s his legacy as a player to collect as many of them as he can, and that’s why playing minus 2 more games in the regular season could very well put this “legacy” of his in jeopardy.

Ignoring, of course, the OTHER legacy he’s leaving behind that’s the cause of his suspension to begin with.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

forgive us for wanting our player to win awards. either way, that’s not the type of stuff i’d be spouting on a hawks blog. as to his legacy…at this point, people are going to think what they want to think about ovechkin the player. i’m glad he’s on the caps, but i’m not here trying to convince you he’s clean (“only smaller/turned players” i took exception to)…i think the suspension itself and the handling by the league is interesting and worthy of discussion.

by Natty Bumppo on Mar 15, 2010 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Perspective is severely lacking with Cap fans

Their division is sewn up. Their #1 seed in the conference is practically guaranteed. And they have a 5 pt lead in the President’s trophy race.

However wrong/right Cap fans and other fans believe the suspension is the fact remains its 2 measly games.

My top-4 defenseman is done for the regular season.

Shitty situation here, but I think we have the right to be emotional and irrational when some caveman brute alters our season and Stanley Cup hopes, and their fanbase cries about a potential lost Art Ross Trophy.

Stanley Cup>Art Ross

This is an emotional cheap shot, but I see many Cap fans still fail to prioritize their trophy desires and whine more about Norris and Hart trophy snubs over possessing a gorgeous Stanley Cup.

the only thing i wanted to add is that commenters at japers’ rink just like to discuss things. that’s why there’s so goddamn many of us. we’ll debate anything, and we’re looking for new opinions. any discussion of AO’s suspension (which i thought was the subject of this post) is not meant to make light of campbell’s injury, which is obviously a blow to the hawks.

by Natty Bumppo on Mar 16, 2010 1:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes, you're right

I enjoy hovering at Japers’ due to that fact. This is a topic that hits home though. Although I tried to be objective yesterday, I couldn’t get myself to comment and I left rather bitter. Stuff like “He was milking it” even after the extent of his injuries was announced. It doesn’t matter whose team he plays for. He’s a person. I just hate the blaming the victim stuff.

I thought PPP did a pretty good job of keeping things real. JP is a hands on moderator and controls the quality of content there very well, but it was clear yesterday that he really wasn’t open to outside perspectives on the topic, so there was less “discussion” than normal. Just look at how Bushwood Bushwhacker got bushwacked (say that 10 times fast). I guess it’s just one of those topics that’ll remain a hot potato for a while.

All will be forgiven after we win the SC though ;)

I think someone on here (sorry, I’ve read a bunch of blogs today and wouldn’t know where to begin to look for the comment) stated something along the lines of “If losing one player costs us winning the SC this year, then we were in trouble anyways”. (That’s how I recollect the jest of it) Douchenozzle, I say to that. I think we still have just as good a chance as any other team to win this year, but this really throws us “into the mix” so to speak. Although nothing is ever guaranteed, the playoffs will now be an all out scrum. I’d say we’re probably still in a little bit better position than last year, but we won’t be surprising anyone either this time around.

These guys work their whole lives to be in this position and many great players, and teams, never won the cup. Our fan base too has invested years of emotion, money, heartbreak, time, etc to have a chance like we do this year – almost 50 years of it – and it may have been taken away with one completely unnecessary push (and yes people, it was a push – not finishing a check – a push from behind when a player was in a vulnerable position).

I’m not saying that Ovechkin’s push was any more or less “dirty” than other examples. Ultimately, I don’t freakin’ care. I can’t stop people from saying what they will, but it is incredibly insulting to hear comments like “Campbell should have braced for the hit”, “If it wasn’t for Campbell’s toe pick…”, “Campbell turned…”, “Ovi’s just so big and strong”, “Ovi might not win this or that award”, “But so-and-so didn’t get a suspension”. Ugh. Blame the victim. Sympathize with and make excuses for the perpetrator of the crime. A lot of people really missed the point on this one. I’m not saying it was all of them, but it was a vast majority of Caps fans.

I just wonder how they would be handling this situation if it were reversed? I’d gladly take the terribly unfair 2 game suspension. But hey, it’s hockey right? Shit happens. It’s apparently just part of the game.

…along with “Campbell sucks anyway” and a bunch of other garbage, and more apologetic crap from Wysh and others.

I agree that there have been a lot of insulting comments. I expect that kind of ignorance from random bloggers (“Campbell was milking it” “it was just little push on the shoulder”) but it absolutely disgusts me that Ovechkin, Boudreau, and others in a position of influence are crying foul.

Ovie basically says that he didn’t deserve a suspension because he didn’t intend to injure Campbell, and Boudreau’s comments were very tasteless as well.

Why is everyone defending a hit that was late, from behind, and in a dangerous location? Ovechkin was penalized for a reckless decision. The intent and the results should not be an issue here, much less all of the other crap excuses that people are throwing around.

well i’ll say that i think it’s wrong. just absolutely the wrong precedent. whether a guy stays down or gets up, whether a guy stays in the game or leaves the game, has nothing to do with how dangerous/dirty/illegal the hit itself was. i think it lets the refs and campbell off the hook from being explicit about right & wrong on the ice. and it creates situations where guys (alex burrows?) will stay down on the ice in order to draw the game misconduct.

btw, i’m not disagreeing with you. the injury IS the reason, from my perspective. it’s the clear difference between AO’s hit on campbell and all the other boarding penalties around the league that went without suspensions. but the league would never admit it, and as a hockey fan i’d rather the league change its philosophy.

by Natty Bumppo on Mar 15, 2010 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

How about double minors when you draw blood?

It might not be the ideal way, but I think to penalize based on results is a clear way to discourage dangerous plays. Sure, you’d like to do it based entirely on intent or bad decision-making but the fact of the matter is that those are often subjective. The injury is the thing that everyone can agree happened.

In general though, I said this before this happened and while I felt a little awkward saying it since I don’t want to play out the role of the bandwagoner as somebody who wants to come in and clamor for changes in the sport, I think it’s probably a valid point — hard play is fine, but dangerous play that could result in serious injury should always be penalized regardless of intent. You can make tons of comparisons to other sports, but you want players to be mindful of that possibility. That’s how you draw the line between playing hard and playing reckless.

by VerStig on Mar 16, 2010 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow, great insight

That completely dismantles the complaint about Ovie being penalized due to “the results”. The precedent already exists.

On that note but a different one, how about double minors when you draw blood from a player with stitches in his face? (as was the case on Sunday) That was bull and led to the extended 5 on 3.

ahh…i should’ve read your comment before adding mine. it’s beside the point i think—because re-opening stitches COULD affect a ruling, which is the point both of us were making—but in the case of semin on saturday the blood was actually drawn from his chin, not his pre-existing lip wound. i assumed at first that he had been re-opened, but NBC shockingly gave us a good view of semin’s face on the bench, and you could see the new cut on his chin.

indeed. 1000+ remarks. i’d recommend skipping to all comments by J.P., PPP, Down Goes Brown, James Mirtle, Fehr & Balanced, Knee High to a Duck, Gould Old Days and D’ohBoy (the last two are well-respected Japers’ Rink commenters that basically echo the sentiments of alpo above re: perspective). will save you a lot of time, especially since points get repeated. i honestly think the screenshots are completely unfair and bogus, and i say that every time still frames are used in these types of arguments—we actually had a guy trying to convince everyone that brashear’s hit on betts last year was completely clean and not late using a series of stills—but otherwise i think Chemmy makes some good points, too.

by Natty Bumppo on Mar 16, 2010 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions

i have issues with raising the penalty due to blood, also. see semin’s previously cut lip in sunday’s game as an example of how luck/circumstance could factor into the penalty, when really a bloody lip in that event might have told us nothing of the severity/illegality of the high sticking foul.

by Natty Bumppo on Mar 16, 2010 7:40 PM CDT up reply actions

It might not be the ideal way, but I think to penalize based on results is a clear way to discourage dangerous plays.

in light of that crazy-ass figure-four leglock that steve downie pulled on crosby, i disagree that penalizing based on results is effective at discouraging dangerous plays. it’s the guys that don’t wind up injuring someone and get off scot-free for obviously malicious acts that ruin the system and work against this mode of deterrence, in my view.

it’s an imperfect system, obviously, but i’d prefer the refs on the ice have the discretion to decide what’s a major and what’s a minor in these circumstances (or what’s a minor and what’s a double minor, whichever the case may be). i understand why refs themselves DON’T want that freedom—they’d rather have a clear, objective marker like “is there blood” or “is there a head injury” to make their jobs easier. it’s the same reason the NFL did away with the distinction between 5- and 15-yard penalties on facemasks depending on the severity. refs on the field didn’t want to make those calls. still…even in the NFL, personal fouls, celebration penalties, etc., are highly subjective and left to the discretion of the guys on the field. you can’t write a rule that perfectly defines a personal foul without leaving it vague enough for the refs to actively interpret it.

sigh
“Alex pushed [Campbell]. He pushed him,” Caps coach Bruce Boudreau told The Washington Post on Monday. "If he doesn’t fall awkwardly into the boards, a) Is it a penalty? b) Are we having this discussion? … Alex is so much stronger than everyone else. So we’re penalizing him for being strong.

“I was so upset for him. I told [McPhee], ‘I can’t tell him.’ I feel so bad for the guy. All he wants to do is play hockey and play the game hard.”

I don’t even know where to begin in picking this apart. I usually see two sides to everything, but this time, no. And the fact that anyone is trying to place part of the blame on Campbell is completely absurd. The hit was reckless and unnecessary, and Ovechkin’s deserving of the suspension.

Also, that he feels bad for Ovechkin is laughable. Is he worried about protecting his ego? Pretty sure he, of all people, can handle it.

by ITypedforMiles on Mar 15, 2010 9:33 PM CDT reply actions

He's not being penalized for being strong

He’s being penalized for being reckless. There’s a difference.

In baseball terms, not all headhunters are flamethrowers. They’re being penalized for being reckless, not throwing hard. The issue with AO is that he’s both supremely strong and reckless.

IF

I wish everyone that is trying to explain away or rationalize this bullshit play by Ovechkin would stop with the “IF this thing had happened” or "IF this thing hadn’t happened " comments.
The ONLY thing that matters is what DID happen, and that is, he committed a reckless and dangerous act, that could and should have been avoided, and it resulted in the serious injury of another player.
And this wasn’t the first time it’s happened. This is now the, what, third, fourth, fifth time he’s been the perpetrator of this type of play? The NHL rules are pretty clear that multiple infractions of this kind result in suspensions of increasing length.
I really don’t think he’s being made an example of in any way. He’s simply reaping the harvest of the type of player he has decided to be in this league.

Ovechkin has a long end of season coming

If I was a Caps fan, I would hope they rested him for a lot of the remaining games. The more he is out there with his “Romanowski” type rage, the more chance there is for someone to end it.
I don’t think there are too many 220lb NHL players that will back down from a confrontation with Ovechkin. I think if Seabrook or Ladd see him again this year, which would be a good thing for Hawks fans…….., Ovechkin will be in for a good fight, and I don’t mean fisticuffs. Seabrook and Ladd are the only Hawks that take care of business physically all the time. Eager tries, but some of his connections loose. Burish no. Fraser, no. Buff, no. Brouwer, maybe.

Obviously Toews plays hard and physical all the time as well, but his strategy would be to just control and beat Ovechkin. He can and will accomplish his goal, but at the same time I want Seabrook to knock Ovechkin’s ugly ass face through the back of his head. Make him spend the summer sipping from a straw with Lilja type injuries. Try that drag move on Kieth while Toews and Seabrook are out there, I dare you.

Game one CHi – CAPS will be awesome if it happens. I can’t wait.

Come on Hawks get it rolling for Campbell. He deserves it. He got you this far, now somebody step up and finish it if not for yourself, then for him.

Ha! I totally forgot about that angle.

I have disagreed with many of Don Cherry’s opinions throughout his years on “Coach’s Corner”, but in the end he often makes reasonable arguements and thoughts (see this weekend on Matt Cooke and headshots). His thoughts are always with the players and is always willing to adjust his views on various topics.

Milbury is still stuck in the 70’s when it was O.K. to run into the stands and beat someone with their shoe, and his views continuously re-iterate that. I can’t remember ever agreeing with any of his views other than telling the bigger idiot, Glenn Healy, to shut up or knock him down after one of his ridiculous thoughts ( “Probably only 30 people watched the Gold Medal Game”). It’s extremely rare that he ever makes sense and is completely annoying to everyone. 90% of the time.

Did Bruce Boudreau get hired at a Lambs Farm career day?

This quote is from: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4997843&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines

“Brian Campbell is one of the best skaters in the National Hockey League,” Boudreau said. "If he thought danger was coming, and he saw Alex right behind him, he would have moved. I think he was trying to spin away and the spin didn’t work, and he got caught in the ice and he fell into the boards.

Now I know we’re all trying to avoid name calling but if this comment is any indication of Boudreau’s general intelligence level, he is a retard. I know Campbell busts out the spin-o-rama more than most players but blaming Campbell is completely off base and just low class (which is indicative of most people who live in the DC area).

Ovechkin is strength is to blame? Really?

That’s why he’s injuring other players? This is so ridiculous. I would label Ovechkin as a guy with a reckless style of play. He makes hits when he sees an opportunity and doesn’t have that filter in his brain to hold him back from hitting someone when an injury risk is at its highest.

That is the worst part. He didn’t want to end Campbell’s season, but he wanted him out of that game. There is no other reason for hits like that. Watch Toews. He hits, but with the intention to separate the player from the puck. These type of hits, like Kronwall, are just unnecessary. by Cristobal the Cat on Mar 16, 2010 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions

assignment

it’s the same thing they did with beach and aliu last season (which they f’ed up by getting kicked off the team and sent home). when a player’s junior/college season is over they can assign them to the minor league team on an “amateur try-out” contract.

i would imagine that once spokane is eliminated that beach would be assigned there as well. but that may not be a given since aliu was recently sent down to toledo (echl). there may not be enough room for extra forwards. it’ll be interesting to see if some of the college guys who are done go there (sweatt, leddy) too.

also, these assignments (as long as they are under the amateur status) don’t start the clock on their entry-level deals. so even though lalonde (and i think beach) signed their 3 year deals earlier this year the clock doesn’t start on those until the fall.

Not bad

I prefer not to buy the desktop version, cause they are near impossible to upgrade. I got a wireless modem, carying case, mouse, and the laptop for 400 total though. All I plan on doing on it is playing old games, (like Civ3), and chatting here during Hawks games, so it was a great price.

My parents

actually bought an Acer netbook… it was cheap, and I think it gets the job done but does feel a little cheap (the “3” key just broke on it).

I got an Asus netbook last year on a friend’s recommendation that it and MSI were the best netbook manufacturers at the time, and it’s been really good (for travel, especially airplanes since I fly NY-Chicago a lot). It’s a little more expensive but some of their models might have had some price cuts more recently.

Also, after my main laptop got stolen from my apartment in September, I managed to find an HP 16" laptop for $350 — it’s great for everything except for gaming, which I do much less of these days (heck, I never played Civ3… I gave Civ2 a stab last year though!).

Semin made a similar play against Boyle in the Olympics

Remember Boyle slew foot him afterward?

I added Semin to my most hated player list because of this and the cross check to Niemi. Not only did he run Niemi, but he crossed him in the face. These guys (Semin and 8) are shitheads. L like the scar that semin has now on his face. There will be more.

"All questions must be submitted in writing"

by laaarmer on Mar 16, 2010 11:29 AM CDT reply actions

I don't think there are videos of the semin hit on boyle

but I don’t remember it being nearly as dangerous as ovechkin’s hit on campbell. Semin’s hit wasn’t from behind, it was a little late and Boyle was a few feet from the boards, but I don’t equate the two plays.

"In an ideal world I would have all 10 fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching."

by hackerar on Mar 16, 2010 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Correct

Certainly not as bad. BUT late and at the boards. Shithead stuff. Losing a game 7-3 late in 3rd period.

The two of them can get to know eachother, if you know what I mean.

"All questions must be submitted in writing"

by laaarmer on Mar 16, 2010 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions

disagree

i’m going to have to disagree on the semin hit. here’s the hit:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_y_L2iR7VZA

semin hits boyle from the side as boyle’s releasing the puck. that was a clean hit in my book and boyle acted like a douche-nozzle afterwards.

by modnar on Mar 16, 2010 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Well you are wrong

It was late and it was high and it was unnecessary, exactly what I’m talking about.

That game was over. There was no reason and no purpose for that. It is meathead hockey. If that was an NHL game, Semin would have gotten his ass kicked more than once.

However, Boyle should have just beat his ass. The slew foot is dangerous as well.

"All questions must be submitted in writing"

by laaarmer on Mar 16, 2010 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't see the late part

Boyle is getting rid of the puck and gets hit. 38 second mark, chest/shoulder-on-shoulder and Boyle is actually ducking out of the way. Not high, I don’t think.

Unnecessary? Yes.

by red army line on Mar 16, 2010 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

how exactly?

how exactly was it late? boyle was in the process of passing the puck.

how exactly was it high? they hit shoulder to shoulder.

it was a check. a hard check. a clean check. he didn’t go for boyle’s head, he didn’t lead w/ an elbow, he didn’t leave his feet. i’m at a loss to see it. please let me know where in the video i should look (what time) to see what you see.

i don’t know semin from adam, but that was a clean hit.

by modnar on Mar 16, 2010 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions

why did semin end up with a penalty?

Why... Why are you never funny?

by meeshak on Mar 16, 2010 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions

before the hit

he received a high sticking penalty for something that occurred before the hit. if you watch the video the ref in the far corner’s arm is in the air before boyle even gets the puck. and canada maintains possession through semin’s hit and then out into the neutral zone.

if you watch at the 0:56 mark of the video they show the highlight of crosby going to hit semin and semin having is stick up, knocking off crosby’s helmet. that was being called before the hit on boyle. semin didn’t receive a penalty for the hit on boyle.

Weird
The Hawks are practicing in Anaheim on Tuesday but defenseman Kim Johnsson (upper body) and goaltender Cristobal Huet aren’t on the ice.

Nick Boynton, who was recalled from Rockford of the American Hockey League to replace Campbell, is practicing and wearing No. 24

That Johnsson is still not practicing is a bit of a concern, although Hammer didn’t practice for about a month but still played on game days, so we’ll see. And what’s wrong with Huet?

I see three possibilities for what's wrong with Huet

1. Chokers choke (maybe on a pretzel? Or some cheese?)
2. He has the heart of a sheep
3. He is defended to the death by the media

So this is either a minor choking setback, a somewhat serious heart ailment, or the media stopped defending him and he died.
