Q May Be Having A Tenuous Relationship With His Marbles...
Was waiting for practice to finish, so let's get down to what's going on...
-Big news is Brian Campbell is out 7-8 weeks, unless it doesn't heal right or something and surgery is needed. I'm still scarred from the Chelios Numbed Balls incident in '96, so I don't trust anything the Blackhawks medical staff has to say. Anyway, that timetable puts Soupy in contention for the second round, and certainly the 3rd if the Hawks get so far. The news could have been worse, for sure.
-In response, the first signs point to Joel Quenneville losing is fucking mind. We chortled when we saw in the comments some suggesting moving Buff back there. But where was he in practice today? RUNNING WITH THE D-MEN. I cannot stress how much of a disaster this could be. Despite his once a game, circle-the-outside rush, Byfuglien is not a puck-handler. Has he completed a pass this season? He moves laterally with all the quickness and smoothness of a refrigerator. He hasn't played the position in two and a half seasons. Whatever positional sense he may have had -- and it's debatable whether there was any -- certainly has collected enough dust to choke a horse. Please spare us from this horror.
-Huet has the flu, didn't practice today, and won't start tomorrow. Crawford is being called up, and one thinks that Niemi may get both of these games. Cris is running out of games and time to build on a very solid effort in Philly, so please get well soon.
-Johnsson was not on the ice either, but Hossa was. Nick Boynton (#24 in your programs, #1 in your hearts) looks certain to make his Hawks debut tomorrow. So after Marlboro 72 you'll have pairings of Hammer-Hendry and Sopel-Boynton possibly. FUN FUN FUN!!!
-The Second Episode of our podcast, Live From The Five Hole, will be posted tonight or possibly tomorrow. It depends if Kills can find time from his dinner parties and flamingo lessons to join us.
-Don't forget our viewing party Saturday at The Bottom Lounge (1375 W. Lake st.), or at least the four of you who aren't actually headed out to Phoenix that weekend.

Make that Hammer-Hendry and Sopel-Buff/Boynton. GOOD TIMES ALL AROUND.
Gosh, who knew that when the sky finally falls, Huet would be OUT WITH THE FLU?
Bet he still gets blamed for it.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

Come down from the ledge, SamFels.
My understanding is that Boynton didn’t make it to LA in time to practice with the team, meaning that without Johnsson they had only 5 d-men. Hence, Buff practiced with the D.
I hope that’s all there is to it, or I’ll be right up there on the ledge with you.
As for Huet, he’ll now get blamed if any of the other players get sick, meaning he’ll potentially be responsible for any loss the Hawks might suffer even if he doesn’t play.
Man I hope you’re right about Buff. It scares me to even think of the team relying on him to prevent decent scoring chances especially against better puck handlers.
There goes my sanity..
Not that I had much anyways, but with seeing Buff back on D…I think he can do one game or about 6-10 mins..
We’ll see. Lets see if that ledge gets a little wider after they get back at it Wednesday Night!

According to Jesse Rogers
you guys are right:
Dustin Byfuglien practiced with the defense for the first time in two years and Joel Quenneville said afterwards that he would use him "only in an emergency." Kim Johnsson isn’t on the trip, so Byfuglien becomes the seventh defenseman. Johnsson is still recovering from an upper body injury and might join the team this weekend in Phoenix.
Also Jesse said that the lines in practice were DN & Brouwer; Panda/Bolland/Sharp; Madden/Versteeg/Ladd and Fraser/Kopecky/Eager. The D were 72; Boynton/Hammer and Sopel/Hendry. Don’t know what that means as far as who are scratches for the game but you’ll notice Burish isn’t mentioned and Buff is only mentioned as the 7th option emergency D man.
Intesresting. I like it.
I know we sometimes hate Q’s juggling of the lines, but I like what he did with the top 2. It’s not really juggling b/c we’ve had these combos before, but he needs to do something to improve the 2nd line’s production and get Bolland up to speed. Adding Sharp might just do that.
D-pairings are what I expected and the 3rd line should be productive too. If you didn’t mention it, I doubt anyone would have noticed at first that Buff or the Cheese-shire Cat were off the ice… he’s fading already!

And now we have the apology from Ovechkin
This is quite something to behold. It’s was wonderful prepared statement that the Capitals put together for Ovechkin, but it comes across as pompous and unresentful. Here’s the link from TSN and judge for yourselves.
In this article you’ll eventually read on of the bes tlines you’ll ever read on the internet coming from fat-ass Boudreau, the Capitals coach, who suggest this:
“He’s so much fun to watch that I think the game is hurting when he’s not playing.”Yeah, it really hurts the game when he isn’t trying to run over everyone, never getting called for it, and scores goals and then parades around the ice like he’s the second coming of Deon Sanders.
But what does “hurt the game” is when one of your “stars” is total nutjob that can’t control his own recklessness and continues to maim the opposition with any regard for their safety and others around him.
"The Golden Goal! And Canada has - once in a lifetime - Olympic Gold!"
Congratulations to The Golden Boys- Toews, Seabrook, and Keith- for delivering the GOLD to CANADA.
What a douchelicker
So he’s basically sorry he was suspended? And has learned nothing from this.

No remorse
That’s how he came across after each of his previous cheap hits resulting in injuries. The guy is a complete scum bag. It’s never his fault. That’s why I believe two games off is a joke. Two games sends a message, yes; that the NHL doesn’t care if players are seriously injured through cheap shots delivered by “stars”.
But he has so fun on the ice!
And by the way, it’s not Ovechkin’s fault he is so strong. Most of the blame should be put on that milking girly legged Campbell
If it's a choice of Crosby or Ovi
I’ll pick Ovi any day, but he sure is one dirty fucker. I think it was one of the guys out of the Daily Herald that made the comment that he’s like Jordan merged with Rodman – talent with blatant balls-out disregard for things.
He's the one they call Dr. Karpotsev...
He ain't Jordan and not by a longshot.
But yeah, let’s take Ovechkin who falls apart in important games and whose team has only won one playoff series and now 3 division titles in the popsicle division.
Or we could have Crosby who has won just as many individual awards, a division title, 2 conference titles, a Stanley Cup, and a Gold Medal in which he scored the GWG in OT to win it. He’s clutch in every aspect. But who would want him right?
You may not like Crosby but he’s a better player overall than Ovechkin. In fact I’d take Jonathan Toews anyday over Ovechkin because Toews can get it done when it matters and also comes up big in the clutch.
At the end of the day all we want to win is the Stanley Cup. So who do want leading your team towards the Stanley Cup, Sid or Ovie? How about Ovie or Toews? I think I already know who you want.
"The Golden Goal! And Canada has - once in a lifetime - Olympic Gold!"
Congratulations to The Golden Boys- Toews, Seabrook, and Keith- for delivering the GOLD to CANADA.
Every time I have the honor to play for my team, I will continue to do what I have done since I was taught to play. I will play hard, play with passion and play with respect for my teammates, opponents and fans.
He doesn’t respect the opponent. The hits against Gleason, Gonchar, Briere and Campbell were unnecessary and are perfect examples of him lacking lacking respect.
Or how about his running of Malkin because……..know one really knows why.
We could talk about his respect for fans with the incident regarding the Russian fan and camera he threw a hissy fit at.
Ovechkin is a punk. But he is a generational hockey talent and his hockey skills are better than Crosby IMO. Yet, as you said, I prefer Crosby for being the total package that he is.
FWIW
I didn’t think Ovi’s hit was dirty or with the intent to injure, I just thought it was careless, reckless and outside the rules. I thought whoever wrote his statement hit the right notes and I’m not bothered by it at all.
It sucks we lost Campbell but life ain’t fair and shit happens.
Reading what you wrote
to me, for something to be “outside” of the rules implies that it is dirty on some level, because it is understood that it is violating the regulations that are in place. It’d be the difference between someone’s stick unintentionally coming up and hitting someone in the face, and McSorley using his like a club. Ovi chose to push Soupy, knowing full well that there was a chance that what did happen would.
He's the one they call Dr. Karpotsev...
For me, dirty means
with the intent to injure. There’s rules against all sorts of things, being offsides is against the rules but it’s not a dirty play.
But fact of the matter remains
I never said he intends to injure. My qualm is when you have a history of incidents in Briere, Gleason, Malkin headhunting, Gonchar, Kaleta, and now Campbell saying something like this:
Every time I have the honor to play for my team, I will continue to do what I have done since I was taught to play. I will play hard, play with passion and play with respect for my teammates, opponents and fans.
The quote comes off as very callous and arrogant. No matter his intent, his style of play “since I was taught to play” finds himself dishing illegal hits and sometimes injuring the opponent.
no - no point. Loose cannons are just as bad as deliberate damage
perhaps a hair less morally culpable, but the wounded innocents take cold comfort from that.
The 2 game suspension appropriately takes into account the non-deliberation.
Yes, there are rules
where if it is violated it is not a dirty play, such as offsides. But, anytime that someone’s health and well-being is in consideration, it is a different situation. Offsides only results in the stoppage of play and a face-off. Penalties are different, because mostly they result from physical acts against other players. There are harsher penalties (i.e. majors, misconducts) for acts that are willfully and knowledgeably committed. Ovechkin chose to push Soupy, it was a conscious decision. Granted, 99% of the time, there might be no negative result to Soup, but this is the 1%. And even though normally there might not be an injury, it still doesn’t rationalize it as a clean play. It’s like saying, well, I shot someone, but because he didn’t die, it’s ok.
He's the one they call Dr. Karpotsev...
by deathmonkey on Mar 16, 2010 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions
I've leave the American legal system out of this
I know you didn’t bring it up but your shooting example, or the insanity argument, probably translate really poorly to hockey. Like the fact that while Ovechkin chose to push Soupy, some would say because of his style of play (or personality, or whatever) it was only kinda-sorta-quasi-semi conscious…
pushing isn't the same as shooting
this was pretty clearly a suspendible hit, but a push is not analogous to shooting someone.
you might be able to make that case with the cooke-savard hit: e.g. by not suspending cooke, the league basically said it’s ok to shoot someone so long as they don’t die.
Why... Why are you never funny?
I understand your point of view
and I’m not trying to convince you or others who think that way of mine, I’m just trying to explain what I think so that it’s clear and understandable to anyone who wonders why someone like me wouldn’t be upset.
I would be upset if I thought the play was dirty, and I think dirty is a subjective point. For me I think dirty has to do with intent. Also, I don’t think just creating a situation where someone could get hurt is enough because those situations occur all the time, within and outside of the rules. Guys get hurt off of legal plays, guys get hurt off of plays that are penalties, these things happen. In fact I would argue that in a few of the times that guys drop the gloves and fight you may have one of the combatants so angry he is trying to fight him so hard it causes injury.
Because I don’t think he intended to injure Campbell I don’t think it was a dirty play. I do think it warranted a punishment and I think the punishment was about right, the right penalties were called on the ice and a multi-game suspension for the offender.
I think what trips people up
is the difference between “dirty” and “reckless.” I honestly don’t think Ovechkin purposefully goes out and tries to injure people; he’s not Matt Cooke or Steve Downie or a cheap shot artist. His offenses tend to be exaggerations of his normal boisterous play, and not quite indicative of someone who has all of his screws loose. I think his coach and GM need to rein him in on the recklessness, not just for the sake of shedding the repeat offender image, but also to protect him from the possibility of someone who actually DOES have a few screws loose taking it upon himself to exact revenge for one of Ovechkin’s reckless plays.
It’s really all up to him — he needs to learn from these suspensions and start making better decisions. Otherwise, he’ll have no one to blame but himself if a guy like Cooke or Downie decides to put him on their hit list.
I like the analogy comparing this to a chop block in football
For me that’s the fairest example. You may not intend to injure the opposing player – you might just intend to protect your QB, but the play is considered “dirty” because it takes advantage of an opponent while he is in a prone position and often results in injury. The same here. Ovie pushed Campbell into the boards while he was in a prone position. The intent to injure doesn’t matter to me. The act itself is “dirty”, but that doesn’t automatically apply the “dirty” label to the player.
Is that possibly your position Scott13?
Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

After a few days of debate on Ovie
Either he is a totally dirty player purposefully trying to injure and then acting dumb and pretending he doesn’t know not to do things that can injure players….or he is dumb as a rock. For a reasonable player a 2 game suspension would make an impression like, “Gee. Maybe I did something wrong and should learn from it.” Apparently for a total dumb fuck like Ovechkin, 5 or 10 MIGHT be enough to get through his thick skull that HE was at fault here and can’t continue to play like that. Of course douche bags like Milbury and assorted Washington Caps officials aren’t doing anyone any favors by supporting his, “Golly, Gee. What did I do?” charade.
"dirty" includes "loose cannon reckeless"
If one is too clueless/stupid/ADD/classless/drug-addled/volka-uninhibited to comprehend that one is endangering others, that doesn’t make it non-dirty.
Sure life ain’t fair, and shit does happen – but outrage and consequences are appropriate when loose cannons injure innocent bystanders.
Well, I for sure don't agree
with the writer for the Daily Herald, because if he was Jordan, he’d have won the Cup already with a half decent supporting cast, but he hasn’t. I guess my view of the Ovi/Crosby choice comes down to the individual players. As far as Crosby goes, in my opinion, he has benefited more from his surrounding cast than Ovi has thus far. Crosby has been excellent his whole career, and worked hard this offseason developing his shot more so that he’d be able to score more goals, but in my mind Ovechkin has been the more consistent player as far as individual stats go. Again, just my personal opinion, I really have no particular love for either player, but I can respect the talent that each possesses, just like with Brett Favre.
He's the one they call Dr. Karpotsev...
Yes, but
Ovechkin has more talent with him now than Jordan did in his early years. Had he not wilted in last year’s playoffs, we might have seen the Caps in the finals.

This was an apology?
What pisses me off the most about this “apology” was this:
As players we must accept responsibility for our actions and I am no different but I did not intend to injure Brian and that is why I was disappointed with the NHL’s decision yesterday.Basically he’s saying, “I should take responsibility for my actions, but I’m not going to because it’s not my fault.” I think the majority of us agree that he didn’t intend to hurt Soupy, but that he was reckless, doesn’t THINK, and that stupid unnecessary play deprived us of a key player. You can play hard and smart, but he just doesn’t seem to get that concept.
Boudreau’s comments (and Leonsis, the Caps owner) just show why Ovechkin hasn’t learned this. Both are basically telling Ovie, “Do whatever, we think you’re the best thing for hockey so nothing is your fault and everyone is just a hater.” I wonder if Ovie would become a better, smarter player if he had an authority figure who would take him aside and explain to him that playing smarter doesn’t mean playing soft.
Boudreau's and Leonsis's comments
disappoint me more than Ovechkin’s “apology,” because it’s like you said, they illustrate the pervading attitude of the organization toward Ovechkin’s reckless style of playing.
well
if that is how his coach/team feel and Ovi states he will continue to do and not give a rat’s ass; it’s time for other teams to start sending people after him. Hurt him, I’m sure they will change their tune pretty quick. Eye for an eye. I’m getting pretty sick of hearing about this and yet nothing changes.
If Boston draws the 8th seed I hope Chara obliterates this faux tough guy.

Chelios' Numbed Balls Incident Explanation
In Game 4 of the second round of the 1996 playoffs, Chris Chelios sought out team doctor Louis Kolb before the game, complaining of a pulled groin. Kolb gave him a shot of Novocain to ease the pain, but allegedly got the dosage wrong and numbed Chelios’s entire lower body. Chelios had to sit out the game which the Hawks lost to Colorado in overtime.

I don't remember this
and I was certainly old enough to. But up until I read the explanation I kept reading it as “numbered balls” instead of “numbed balls”. I kept trying to think of a scenario involving a team doctor and some billiard or lotto balls, and I came up with some pretty weird ones.
wow, that would be weird
that story’s crazy enough to chase me away until next week. that and the fact that i’m moving across international boundaries. don’t let the place go to the trolls while i’m away.
Why... Why are you never funny?
I was at that game
If I remember right, Amonte was out too. Chelios gave the crowd a thrill by coming out between periods and skating……but he never made the game. We lost in OT if I’m remembering right. Roenick thought he should have had a penalty shot vs. Roy. After enough whining, Roy came up with the line, “I can’t hear you. I have my championship rings in my ears”. I think with EITHER Amonte OR Chelios we win in regulation and advance. Bitter loss. I think they called it a pulled stomach muscle back then….didn’t know it was numb balls…LOL.
That is correct...
…Kolb either put the dosage in the wrong spot, or he juiced him up a bit too much.
This was one of the last straws in moving away from Kolb (who I believe was friends with Wirtz), as team doc.

funny thing about mcphee
When Gleason was hit and Ovi suspended:
“In my mind the player was trying to make a hit and it went wrong,” McPhee said. "And that’s ok. When you’re trying to hurt someone, if you’re trying to do something where a player is vulnerable or he doesn’t see you coming—you hit him from behind, you hit him from the blindside—I want those hits punished. But in this instance, it was an open-ice check, and it was a good attempt at a hit that went wrong, and sometimes they’re gonna go wrong.
“You have a player in Ovechkin who is one of the league leaders in hits, and they’re not all gonna go right. But if it’s an attempt at a legal hit and it goes wrong, it doesn’t mean it’s suspend-able. And in my mind, when there’s no intent to injure, and there is no injury, you can’t suspend the guy. And the league’s concern is that Ovi’s really been physical lately and he’s going to hurt someone. I said, ‘Well, if he hurts someone, suspend him.’ But you can’t suspend someone for something that might happen.”
and on the Campbell hit and Ovi suspension?
“We have no problem with the way Alex tried to finish his check,” GM George McPhee said in a statement. “Unfortunately, an injury resulted. We are disappointed with the suspension but do not want to comment further.”
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

Maybe
McPhee is John Kerry in disguise. He is a flip-flopper!
He's the one they call Dr. Karpotsev...
I wonder if this is a sign
that the D is wearing down as we’re fearing… and that Q is just trying to get Buff ready in case we need more depth. I mean, Hjammer and Sopel are both banged up, and we’ve seen that the other guys might be tired.
Hopefully it’s just a “just in case” type of move, or maybe he puts Buff in for a shift or two just to try things out (and then proceeds to give up on the idea).
Personally
I’d rather have Karpovtsev back on the blue-line than stick Byfuglien there again. But that’s just me.
He's the one they call Dr. Karpotsev...
Well
we do have a logjam of 3rd-4th line forwards, so might as well practice him there just to make sure you’ve covered all bases. But otherwise, yeah, like deathmonkey said…

Washington
Milbury is a lose cannon but he was right about the Crapitals. No wonder Obama doesn’t want to go to any of their games.
" Lisa in this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics!"
Buf is not depth on the blueline. Width, yes. Depth, no.
A disaster of epic proportions in the making there.
Ah, the age old dilemma...
What’s more important? Width, or Depth?
"My Father's name is Jack, and my mother's name is Daniels..."
Out of curiosity...
My buddy said that a link from NHL.Com about the Campbell situation linked to the story about Campbell here. Is this true? I haven’t been able to find it. But I would find that pretty cool for this site.
I saw it on NBC.com
Iwas looking for a way to complain about Milburys jackassery, and I found it here
/Note unceasing sarcastic laughter in background.

I KNEW I wasn't just imagining that
For context to those who didn’t see, Betty White basically said something like “And I thought I’d have to flirt with hockey players” and then said hi to the team. The camera cut to the Blackhawks sitting in the audience, and they were all applauding, except Kane, who gave a little wave back to Betty White.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

Was he wearing his Olympic jacket
and silver medal?

they were all wearing their red jerseys
I’m not sure about the medals, though. I think they have them on the trip because Kane and Toews taped an ESPN segment while wearing them, but didn’t get a good look on Leno.
Yeah, they all had them.
The power play is still f**king clown shoes
Everybody...HIT SOMEBODY! ~ the Chicago Rush are back in April 2010
the medals played a part in the monologue
Jay Leno was talking but was interrupted by a “glare” which turned out to be from Patrick Kane’s silver medal. Then Jonathan Toews stood up with Seabrook and Keith and said “Sorry, that’s from the glare of these gold medals” or something to that effect.
According to one of the beat writers with them on the trip, Toews had NO idea that they had cue cards to read from for that bit…. but he nailed it anyway.
In completely unrelated news, did you know that the anagram for “Jonathan Toews” is “Aha! Now jest not”? Does this surprise anyone? Bueller?

Jon Sweat-A-Thon
…it’s a good drip.
Or….
No Haj, twat-nose!
This might work if, say, Toews were Muslim, but couldn’t go to Mecca because of an oddly-formed nose.
I think I like yours best.

Skip the middle man, next time you see him, and just punch Boudreau! And Pierre “Massa” Mcguire while you’re over there…
Sopel!
Cannot believe they let Sopel sit behind Kane-Toews on Leno!
My god that man is ugly!
"In this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics!"
That probably got someone on the Leno staff fired

Buff "moves laterally with all the quickness and smoothness of a refrigerator."
That’s laugh out loud fun, right there.
Matt Cooke is a turd burglar. He burgles ALL the turds.
why not put Buff back there?
it’s been bad. Might as well shake it up and make it a different type of bad.
I agree
and we should put Crawford in net!
(naw, they’ve never do either of these! That would be crazy!!!)
