But They've Got Guts, And Guts Is Enough: Hawks 3 - Some People Masquerading As The Kings 0

On the podcast, McClure and I chortled at the suggestion made in some circles that the Hawks lacked guts, or heart.  May we present tonight as Exhibit A of the opposite.  Down three d-men, having played last night and gotten jobbed doing so, against a playoff team that had been off since Sunday, the Hawks stinkfisted the Kings for 3 periods tonight.  Sure, the Kings were pretty awful, but they had some help in that department from the opponent.

Here are you CORSI ratings.  They're pretty hilarious. They also give you a pretty good idea of who the player of the game is.  Oh, and I should also point out that after all of our worrying and teeth-knashing (me included) you're a fan of the #1 seed in the West right now.  If you think the Hawks are struggling, that team from Wine and Computer Country has lost their past two games by a combined 9-3.  In fact, the Yotes are starting to breathe right down their neck.

Look, I could go through all three periods and the big points, but they all look the same.  The Hawks smothering the Kings, Antti Niemi an absolute spectator, and creating few-few more chances against Jonathan Quick.  How many big saves did Niemi make?  Three?  And this is without Biscuit, Phantom, and Johnsson.  Play like this from here on out, and Killion's beard could start in net and it won't matter.  Yes, in the 1st period the Hawks passing looked like drunken donkeys trying to put on a production of Street Car.  But considering the circumstances that they kept the Kings at bay, I'll let it pass.

Anyway, the dam finally broke when Kane was allowed to walk right around Rob Scuderi (after a nifty break up of a play by Jordan Hendry -- not his only one of the night either) and make straight for the net.  The ensuing scramble saw Troy Brouwer slam home his 20th (I will now pat myself on the back once again).  For all of this period, the Hawks made the Kings look like The Gimp.  They managed only three shots in that frame, none of them in the neighborhood of threatening.

It all ended in the 3rd, when Jonathan Quick let a real softie in from kopecky.  But we'll take it.  Kopecky was able to cash in on the next shift after a scramble in front.  And that my friends, was that.

Observations

-The 4th line looked so much better with Buff off of it.  Kopecky's earned himself another game at least.

-Speaking of which, once again Buff looked just fine as a d-man.  I'm sure Rozner will be cranking out the old "If we'd kept Buff at D we wouldn't need Campbell" column tomorrow.  I stress SAMPLE SIZE.  I'll still shiver when one team figures out to attack him, and when he gets isolated against a forward with a clue.  But for tonight, it was a job well done.

-Every line contributed, and it would have been nice to see Bolland's line get on the scoresheet.  They're starting to click, it looks.

-Who's surprised the Hawks weren't called for any penalties by the same crew that fucked them in the ass last night?  Anyone?

-We don't have a record on this, but thanks to everyone as we're pretty sure we set a regular season record for comments in a game thread tonight.

-I think I've seen enough of Nick Boynton already.  Hurry back, Kim.

-This just in:  Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead, and the power play is still clown shoes.  But maybe I shouldn't be so harsh when it's missing two of its QB's.

-This reminds me of the Carolina win last year, when the Hawks gutted out two points in the midst of injuries and not playing well.  That game spurred the final close, and hopefully this will do the same.  It will be a much sterner test Saturday night, but two points there and no one will complain about the results of this roadtrip.

Player Of The Game

Yes, Kopecky had two goals, but there was one player who made play after play from the opening draw to the closing bell, and had a huge hand in making sure we didn't have to hear Fucking Randy Fucking Newman once tonight.

Oh you know what?  We don't have a pic or a funny name or even a photoshop for Jordan HendryBut he's the one, and you can come up with one.

Buff on point?

The entire D held when the doom-sayers were predicting a collapse. To be honest Buff looked more than serviceable on the PP. He definitely won’t fill Seabs or Soupy’s skates ..and the odd puck will skid right past him on the boards for sure- but he actually looks more comfortable out there than in front of the crease. Now if he can stop shooting the puck right into the goalie’s midsection consistently.

It feels weird to say this

but I think I prefer Buff on D,,,as opposed to that confused thing masquerading as a “big-man-in-front-of-the-net” forward.

sorry if I sounded condescending in any way

and I thought Buff did a good job back there today, but I don’t think he’s a long-term solution by any means. Still, I agree with you in that he looked more pumped on D tonight than he has at forward in the past few weeks, although maybe some of that has to do with getting the fuck away from the fourth line.

by gmh on Mar 19, 2010 4:38 AM CDT up reply actions

and the 4th line

was happy to see him not on it!

by Jrs23 on Mar 19, 2010 8:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I know its been said already

but Buff on D was not the apocalypse everyone thought it might be. I think the positive thing to pull out of this is that he stepped up his play when the team needed him to and looked like he actually gave a shit about ice time. However, I will be eagerly awaiting the return of Campbell, Seabs, and Johnsson.

by Cristobal the Cat on Mar 19, 2010 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe

Buff has been growing all along, but had finally maxed out his potential at forward. And what he learned during that time is paying dividends back on D. Maybe I’m also completely out of my mind. Who knows.

As for the midsection shots. I think part of the problem (and I think Pat & Eddie O pointed this out) was that nobody wearing 4 Feathers was anywhere near the net. Shots right at the goalie are fine if you’ve got traffic in front to either get a deflection or cause a bobble leading to a cheap-o.

BTW: It’s Eddie O. Pierre McAssKisser calls him Edzo because he thinks it will get him a date.

I appreciate your guys' analysis

but your optimism is starting to get out of hand. Last game it was "It’s only going to take a slight shift of fortune and play to set this ship right again. " That sounds like me at the Blackjack table when I’m down 300 bucks. Now it’s that they passed the gut check test by controlling LA. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll give Hawks credit for grinding this one out. It’s a long season and a wins a win. But this was a laughable effort by the LA team. They only mustered 3 shots in the second period. I don’t care how well the oppsing team plays, no NHL team worth a damn is going to leave a period with 3 shots on goal. Not to mention Burish, Eager, and Kopekcy out played every one of their lines the entire night. We couldn’t even score on this hapless bunch until Rutger Brouwer managed to squeek in a garbage goal while he was nearly dry humping Quick.

The fact of the matter is the Hawks don’t have a team identity right now. The first half of the season it was all defense, a blistering transition game, decent special teams, and not much work needed from the goaltender (20 saves a night was a win). Now the defense has crumbled both in substance and in health. As a result, the goaltending is looking like it’s worth 4 goals on 30 shots against. The only d-man carrying the puck right now is Hendry, except he doesn’t know what to do with it once he gets two feet over the opposition blue line. The powerplay is so awful I cringe when the other team takes a penalty. And Kane and Toews are too busy sexting each other about whose Tahoe has the meaner grill. This team is going to have a lot of trouble if it doesn’t pull itself together. Teams like this make prime targets for a first round upset.

by Billy Charlesbois on Mar 19, 2010 7:57 AM CDT reply actions

It's not mandatory listening...

But Sam and I outlined our reasons for optimism in the podcast. Believe me, if you’d ever talked to us regarding anything other than hockey, you’d realize that we’re probably the least Pollyanna motherfuckers on the planet, so here’s a cliff notes version of it. Granted, this was before Seabrook went down, so take that for what you will.

-Top to bottom, this team is still the most talented and versatile in the west, particularly the forward corps
-It’s the doldrums/dog days of the season.
-Up until this recent stretch, the Hawks had not lost 4 of 7 in any rolling 7 game stretch all year
-They were able to kick it up a notch last year for the home stretch of the regular season to secure the 4th seed
-They did so without Patrick Sharp for the majority of it

You’re welcome to be skeptical, and we certainly encourage it, but I hardly see our analysis as kool-aid chugging.

I agree

This was a nice and timely win and there’s no doubt they have what it takes to win but given what we’ve seen lately, I couldn’t help thinking about what kind of game this could have been had the Kings scored one when it was still 1-0. The Kings didn’t have much momentum until late in the third and that’s when Niemi got to see some quality shots. Had they scored one to tie the game, who knows…

But a win is a win so I’m not bitching

by hawkswin!hawkswin! on Mar 19, 2010 8:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Sure they kicked it up a notch

without Sharp if we’re talking personel here, they also had Khabbibulin in goal and riding the momentum of making the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade. Of course, I agree with you that they are one of the most talent rich teams in the league. That’s why if they get burned in the first round it will be an upset. I’m just not going to be trumpeting a gut check win after they showed no heart after blowing that two goal lead in Detroit, losing with two seconds left to Philly, or blowing a three goal lead to Washington after Campbell went down. If they had come back against the Ducks, then I’d probably be agreeing with you.

As far as the no 4 out of 7 losses goes, while meaningful it isn’t quite as impressive as it would have been in the everybody wins here’s a point in the standings for showing up shootout NHL.

To address a couple other people who pointed out that the Hawks have limited people to fewer shots previously in the season, implying that the Kings aren’t just a bunch of slouches, that was with Keith, Campbell, Seabrook, Hammer, Barker, and Sopel operating as the tightest defensive corps in the league. Last night was Keith, Hammer, Sopel, Boyton, Hendry, and Buff. And many of them haven’t been playing particularly well over the last 20 games. I still feel that for LA to only muster 3 shots in one period speaks more about how their team was running last night rather than the Hawks.

by Billy Charlesbois on Mar 19, 2010 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions

but

(and I hate to dismantle your rebuttal) Boynton has only played a couple games, no sample size of 20 applicable for him. Hendry is playing possibly the best hockey of his career, Buff is now playing D instead of O, so all that he has done in the last 20 goes out the window, and Hjammer has been playing well IMO. Keith I think has been on par the last 20, just defensive miscommunications have lead to coverage breakdowns, same for catfish.

LA being able to only must 3 shots against this depleted D speaks volumes both about our D men that have stepped up and the LA team as a whole.

BOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!

by SharpKane on Mar 19, 2010 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm also sorry you had to dismantle my post ...

But I think we know what we’ve got with Boyton. I don’t think a 20 game sample is necessary. Hammer has been out of position on just about every odd man rush coming his way since the Olympic break.

It’s a fair point to say my expectations are too high, but I’m just not willing to get as excited about the LA win or Ducks loss as the recap was. I’m merely suggesting that this Hawks team sputtering out a win on the back of Kopecky isn’t something to get overly excited about. Consider it more me waiting for the Hawks to prove me wrong rather than i’m trying to drag you all into a pit of despair with me.

by Billy Charlesbois on Mar 19, 2010 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I hear ya

As far as Boynton, you’re probably right. I can frequently jump off cliffs, too, but I just think a 3-0 win is not cause for concern, no matter how it played out. The games prior, are another story. Glimmers of hope are only a little bit better than the kool-aid, so I’ll take em.

BOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!

by SharpKane on Mar 19, 2010 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Do you think that teams who win the cup haven't done that this year

Just a glance at a few results here:
the caps lost 3 in a row to montreal, ottowa and st. louis giving up an average of more than 5 goals against in that span.
The pens have lost 4 in a row this year to the kings, san jose, boston and new jesery scoring a total of 3 goals over that stretch.

Those are just the teams i looked at. But, i would consider all those teams to be solid contenders for the cup. Could they lose in the first round? Sure, anyone can. Are the hawks any more likely to collapse than any other team? Definitely not, in fact i would say the depth that was on display yesterday should provide some assurance that we’re built on a solid footing and can roll with the punches better than anyone.

So let me get this straight, when our starting defenders shut down the opposing team it is because of their skill. When our backups shut down the other team it’s because the other team wasn’t good enough?

I don’t think our defense has performed at the top of their game for a little while either but to say they haven’t played particularly well while leading the conference in points is a little ridiculous.

I think you have some unrealistic expectations as to what a team looks like over an 82 game season. There hasn’t been a team we played yet this year that you can honestly say that, given a 7 game series, we wouldn’t be right there with or have the upper hand.

by SLoop on Mar 19, 2010 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions

In this league, you only have to be better than your competition

And right now, “the competition” does not exactly have me running scared. Sure the Coyotes have a nice run going right now, but every team goes through a skid like ours at some point over the season. Pittsburgh has done it more than once and San Jose’s post-Olympic skid is probably even worse than ours. All this negativity is unwarranted. We are still 1st place in the Western Conference and no team in (at least in our conference) has me thinking they are the better team when you pit them head-to-head in a full 7-game playoff series.

I just listened to it

(sorry I was late), and I thought the podcast was great! I really enjoyed the interview with the Goalie Guild guy, and it’s nice to hear an outsider’s perspective on the goaltending here. You guys were pretty good, too. :)

One tiny gripe – I cannot hear Sam sometimes, I think he needs to sit closer to the microphone. McClure comes through loud and clear, of course, but sometimes I miss what Sam says. Is it just me?

Also, I was satisfied with last night’s game. I thought the first period was rough but decent, and the 2nd and 3rd were pretty darn good. I think everyone, not just the Dmen, needed to get comfortable with the new roles and new bodies on the ice, and by the 2nd I felt they were more comfortable in general.

Also, why is Boynton bad? He played about 20 minutes, right? I don’t recall hearing his name, which I thought was supposed to be good. Yes, he was part of the inept PP, but that’s hardly solely his fault. I must be missing the bad stuff, so someone please help me out.

by SharpKane on Mar 19, 2010 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions

The defense isn’t healthy, sure, but I wouldn’t say Hendry is the only one carrying the puck. Have you forgotten about Keith, who spent significant time in the offensive zone in each of the past three games, and who still plays the transition game brilliantly for the 26+ minutes he spends on ice every night? Or (ironically, now that Seabrook’s injured) Buff, who sometimes forgets he’s on D and plays puck movement like a forward? Granted, the powerplay is still bad, but the shot at Kane and Toews was a low blow — they’re both playing at point-per-game pace (Toews) or better (Kane) since the Olympic break, and that in spite of the recent losses. No way can you say they’re not contributing.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Mar 19, 2010 8:21 AM CDT up reply actions

teams like this?

i’m not even sure what that means. Good teams dominate other teams. This is not the first time this season the hawks have held an opponent to a ridiculously low number of shots in a period.

This team (provided we get seabs back) is better than last year’s team and that team made it to the 3rd round. That doesn’t mean anything but you can’t be too pessimistic when your team is atop the conference and built strong than your 3rd round playoff team the previous year.

by SLoop on Mar 19, 2010 8:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Granted they lost the game and had a healthy D corps at the time

but didn’t the Hawks hold the Sharks to 14 shots on goal in a game earlier this year? And Nashville to like 17 or 18 shots in a game? What do LA, SJ, and Nash have in common? All playoff teams currently. This Hawks team can shut down any team on a given night.

by HungryHungryPanda on Mar 19, 2010 8:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Actually held Nash to 13 shots in a game on 10/15. Preds aren’t an offensive powerhouse by any means, but that’s still damn impressive.

No bitching about this one from me. They played a playoff type game, gave up hardly a chance, scored on rushing the net(forwards), got a soft goal(us, not them), and put it away. All while not losing any players. Sound like a recipe for getting past the 1st round.

I’d say this is a perfect description of what happened last night. To a fucking “T”. PP is clown shoes and has been. PK is money, although last night was not required. Hell for that matter, it perfectly describes Anaheim too.

Buff did a great job carrying the puck last night, Keith did a good job too, and so Hammer… what team are you watching????

Q says in response to a question about whether he thought the suspension was just

“I’m not worried about justice, I know that we’re worried about our guy. I think that Seabs is an important player for us, and missing two games, you know, hopefully he progresses here, but it was a dangerous hit.”

It sounded to me like the ‘two games’ he was referring to were the last game (which Seabs missed most of after he went off the ice) and this one. I think the team is still noncommittal about his chances of returning for the Phoenix game Saturday, though I personally wouldn’t count on seeing him until the Hawks get back home.

The Trib had a story earlier in the year

on concussions (which is what I’m assuming Seabrook had) and the doctor they interviewed said that the standard is 7 symptom free days before they get cleared. laarmer posted something yesterday talking about what his son went through when he suffered a concussion and said the standard is stricter for a second one, and this is Seabrook’s (assumed) second one this year, so it may even be longer.

But with Eager, Seabrook and Toews earlier in the year Q kept saying day to day even when he knew that wasn’t true so expect more false hope.

by Scott13 on Mar 19, 2010 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

I absolutely would not be surprised

if we didn’t see Seabrook back in the lineup until near the playoffs, say around April 1st. This would give him 6-7 games to get back into rhythm.
I just see them being very cautious with him, since this is likely his second concussion this season. I would rather see him 100% for the playoff run than risk rushing him back and be at risk for a recurrence of any injury porblems.

Yup. I’ve been saying for a couple weeks right now that I wouldn’t be terribly depressed if the Canucks jumped the Hawks for the 2-seed. Scum’s too far back to grab the 6th seed, so if they finished 7th or 8th, the only way the Hawks would see ’em before the WCF is if the 1 and 2 seeds both go down in the first round.

I'm hoping for Scum to meltdown

but I think they have a very good chance at moving up to 6th place. In their remaining 13 games they play Edmonton twice and Columbus 3 times. They also play Minnesota and St. Louis once. All of these teams are currently out of the race. Plus the Kings and Avs have 3 games left against each other. Like I said I’m hoping for a meltdown.

Just looked at the Kings and Avs schedules. The Kings don’t have a bad stretch run, they’ll probably keep the status quo. The Avs, on the other hand, have the 3 against LA you mentioned, 2 against San Jose, and 1 each against the nucks, yotes, and hawks. Worse yet is that Nashville has to hold serve, with 2 left against Scum, on top of two with Phoenix as well. Then again, a wise man once said, “To be the best, you gotta beat the best.” So bring on whoever. WOOOOO!

we have to be able to win against a Detroit team that is NOT the one we played last year, and clearly not the team of two years ago. We are the better team, and I for one, would like to prove it by taking it to the Scum once and for all. You can’t win a championship by avoiding good teams…

by v-piece on Mar 19, 2010 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Not that I disagree, as really I don’t care if or when they face them. Just looking at it from past history, which I’m know doesn’t apply to this year, Detroit seems to be a team harder to eliminate later than earlier.

They’ve lost in the conference finals twice since 95, and won it 6 times. The two times they lost in the CF, that team won the SC. I know it doesn’t really prove anything, but it is just how I feel. I guess this is my version of the eye test. As I said, not the same team as this years, but to me Detroit is the one team I’ve seen that gets crisper and tougher instead of tired as the tourney goes.

The Powerplay

How about when we get in the zone and we’re set up for the pass around drill for the upteenth time one of our forwards takes the puck hard to the net, sure he’s going to get collapsed upon and the puck might get cleared but it also might get chipped around to a more open forward who has a shot or knocked back to a Dman to take a blast. We win a lot of the battles in tight, it has to be worth a shot. It’s to the point now where we have to try something. Someone with a lot more knowledge than me and that’s getting paid well, has to see other options than this merry-go-round from hell.

by activestick on Mar 19, 2010 9:47 AM CDT reply actions

well, with two of your top three “powerplay QB’s” out, I’m not sure they’re going to be turning the corner any time soon. I agree that something needs to be changed, but I’m sure as shit not the one who could put some x’s and o’s on the whiteboard. I’m coming to grips with the fact that the powerplay isn’t going to be top-tier from here on out, but will eventually improve at least a bit from the clown footwear that we’re currently seeing.

by Hjammer of the Gods on Mar 19, 2010 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions

PP issues

it seems like no one is going for the back door cross ice pass. Kane dangles and dangles and he always has to go back to Toews down low for the stuff or up to the point. We never have any lateral movement past the circles, only at the point.

This is the only thing that needs to be fixed for us to start scoring more on the man advantage, and it seems so simple considering the level of talent we have, but for some reason we can not get an open man in the slot or next to it for the life of us. And with Soupy out, this isn’t going to be an easy fix as he is one of our more mobile d men that would be able to drop down for the back door tally.

BOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!

by Hjammer of the Gods on Mar 19, 2010 10:01 AM CDT up reply actions

It’s traditionally been Sharp who waits at the left post while Kane works the right half wall for the cross-ice backdoor tap in.. Brouwer skating with Daydream Nation changes the power play dynamic a bit as he’s truly become a reliable presence in front of the net, so they don’t try to work that play as much.

This relying on shots from the blue line to go through stuff is getting old. Rather see more crashing the net, shooting and rebound hunting. It’s not like we’re controlling the puck getting tons of backdoor chances and never having to go back to retrieve the puck with this plan.

The power play...

…is going to be key come post-season especially, and they do need to get if figured out.

They have the talent to be potent, but so much of the power play is just being loose and playing with confidence. When you don’t score for a while, you tend to tighten your grip on the stick a bit and try to force it.

They just need to simplify things and try to create as much havoc in front of the net as possible.

"LA doesn't deserve a hockey team and we do."

I wouldn’t go that far, and I don’t think you were 100% serious either, but what I can say, having been at the game (as well as the one earlier this year at staples center), is that the city is greatly lacking in hockey fans who give a shit. I rolled into one of those VIP boxes with a Hawks sweater on, expecting to get harassed all game by the opposition. Box ended up being 80% Hawk fans, with the rest split between knowledgeable kings hockey fans, and oblivious drunkards.
We ended up alienating anybody around wearing purple (the score helped too, obviously). I appreciate the cordiality of the Kings fans – the guys near us were really cool folks who knew their shit – but it’s hard for me to respect a place as a hockey city that allows you to pull that sort of takeover shenanigans without as much as some shit talking (if it happened at all last night, it was very minimal).
Loudly shouting the visiting team’s goal song after each score? I believe that’s something you get your ass kicked for in a hockey arena. But we did it. A lot.

Anyway, it’s a shame for an arena to be that quiet and apathetic. Especially with a team like the Kings with so much potential to be great. I could definitely see the franchise gaining some bandwagon steam in the near future. Especially if Kobe retires and the rest of the LA population runs out of coke.

i loved this game

especially the second period. tight passing, good checking, and ben eager actually dared to be physical again.

by heyrocky on Mar 19, 2010 11:47 AM CDT reply actions

I only saw parts of the game

I was at a bar trying to simultaneously watch four basketball games and a hockey game while cocktailing (if yesterday was Pete today is repeat) but I remember thinking Buff looked really good in the defensive zone, in the limited parts I saw. I was concerned though about how he seemed to move up in the zone, or out of the zone more quickly than you would normally see a defender do and I got worried that he was going to get beat by leaving guys all alone behind him. Did anyone else see that?

What’s wrong with Boynton’s play? I didn’t see it much so I’m just asking out of ignorance but I noticed ont he CORSI charts that he had the same numbers as Hendry? And it’s nice to see Hendry step up, I don’t remember a bad game from him all year. I kind of thought Hammer would be the one to step up but this is just as good.

by Scott13 on Mar 19, 2010 12:23 PM CDT reply actions

d men

Boynton is decent, but you can tell he isn’t very fast or agile anymore. Buff was doing that a bit, but he never got caught, and at the same time he was playing it really safe on a lot of plays sticking back, so I think overall he is doing very well adjusting.

BOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!

by SharpKane on Mar 19, 2010 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes

I noticed that too and commented on that during the 1st period thread that someone should remind Buff he is on D.

Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

Excellent summary...

…pretty much covered it there.

One thing- unlike some observers, I thought Hossa had his typical monster game. Set-up both Bolland and Sharp with great passes, had his own usual half-dozen scoring opportunites, and…

…I musta hit rewind 3 or 4 times to enjoy 20 second stints of Hossa running people down, running them over, taking the puck away, and basically doing what he wanted.

You know the opening of Iron Man, with Ozzie in that strange voice.

When #81 starts moving like only he can, I hear in my head :“I AM HOSSA!” in that voice.

by cliffkoroll on Mar 19, 2010 1:20 PM CDT reply actions

Thanks – now every time I see Hossa I’m going to think of that intro.

Speaking of Ozzie, I noticed last night they were playing a Sabbath song in LA’s stadium. Thought that was pretty cool. Now I can’t remember what song it was…

Seriously though, was it Crazy Train? I want to say they played an older song, a Black Sabbath tune, like War Pigs maybe?

Not war pigs

I didn’t sprain my neck.

I think it was Crazy Train. I think they played Paranoid at the Ducks game.

thank you!

I thought I was losing it for a minute, because I definitely knew I heard a Sabbath song. Problem is that it was two nights ago, not last night…which makes me think I’m losing it!

Know what you mean about war pigs – that one makes me want to break stuff.

Seabrook is back practicing on the ice

according to the beat writers who are in Phoenix right now. Huet’s on the ice too, but Johnsson’s still not practicing.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

excellent

So from what I can gather, based on what others here have been saying about concussions (requires minimum 7 days rest, etc.), this was probably NOT a concussion? Rather, a case of Seabs getting his “bell rung”? I have no idea what the difference is medically, I just assumed that if you’re knocked unconscious due to a blow to the head, its probably a concussion. It seems my assumption was incorrect…and that makes me happy.

by K_Dog on Mar 19, 2010 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

even a momentary (1 or 2 second) loss is enough to figure low level concussion

it is possible that he didn’t have one – but I would be hard pressed to believe there wasn’t at least a low level one.

Confusion will be my epitaph.

by krome on Mar 19, 2010 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

They did this before

I seem to recall when Toews (I think it was him, maybe someone else?) was rehabbing from his that part of the process was that he would get out on the ice and then they would see how he reacted (“see how he presents” in Q-speak) in order to gauge his progress.
In any case, if he’s already back on the ice it might be less severe than feared, and that’s a good thing.

he needs to be symptom free after working out to start the return clock ticking, right?

It would be a good sign that he was symtpom free at rest/non-exerted status though.

Confusion will be my epitaph.

more on Seabs

he feels fine but is questionable for tomorrow.

And he hasn’t spoken to Wisniewski since the incident. Quote according to Kuc, “I’m pretty pissed off right now.”

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

Chris Kuc

on Twitter.

He also said Niemi’s starting tomorrow and Dustin Byfuglien is going to remain a defenseman. I’m not sure if he means “until Campbell is back” or “forever and ever and ever” so. Um. Yeah.

I wonder if Huet is not 100%

or if Q is deciding to go with Niemi or we’re still on the goalie-go-round. This is driving me crazy.

by Katherine215 on Mar 19, 2010 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Q's interview post-practice today implies strongly that Huet isn't 100%.

I think he says something like ‘Cris is improving day to day, so hopefully he’ll continue to improve.’

The strong impression I got was that Huet wasn’t completely healthy yet, but was out of the bedridden-and-miserable stage of the flu.

blackhawks site

they just put up a video of seabrook’s interview with the media after today’s practice

by hawkswin!hawkswin! on Mar 19, 2010 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Seabs is scary pale in that video.

There is no color in his face at all. Wow. No way is he playing tomorrow.

And he sounded so sad when he talked about Wiz. I felt really bad for him, all confused about why Wiz would hit him that way.

by spokeinthebandwagon on Mar 19, 2010 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions

maybe the confusion

is the result of having his head knocked into the glass. In which case, it’s still Wisniewski’s fault.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

Expectations?

I definitely didn’t expect to see the ‘Hawks basically put the hammer down on the Kings offensively and limit them to only 17 shots with only Smyth, Kopitar and O’Donnell (really?) registering multiple shots.

Also, a massive suprise that the Byuglien the defensive experiment actually worked. He led the team in shots (6) and acumulated 20:56 of ice-time. Shocked!

5 Shutouts for Niemi. That’s 4 more than “Calder candidate” Howard of Scum city.

Should’ve known that Hating Hollywood would come through.

1st place is the best place. Now go Calgary (it feels weird) and keep us there and put the Wings down to 9th, but then the Oilers would have to win….forget about it. Just keep pace Flames.

"The Golden Goal! And Canada has - once in a lifetime - Olympic Gold!"

Congratulations to The Golden Boys- Toews, Seabrook, and Keith- for delivering the GOLD to CANADA.
