Happy Trade Deadline Day: SCH's First Hour

Someone like Puck Daddy has already been up and running for a few hours now... but I really wanted pancakes so I went to a diner for some breakfast, meaning we're just getting things up and running now.

We've seen only a little action so far - Derek Morris is going back to Phoenix for a 4th round pick.  The Blackhawks are obviously in a lot of rumors around goaltending and our opponents tonight might be a little less dangerous as Sheldon Souray's name is being thrown around a little bit too.

We've got a pot of coffee ready to go and we suggest you do the same.  Join us in the comments for the first hour of our coverage...

And just because we're pushing this as hard as we can - Join us tonight at The Bottom Lounge (1375 West Lake Street) after the game for drinks.

heaven help me

I don’t know why I decided to go to work this morning. I mean it’s not like there will be blockbuster trades the likes of Kovalchuk-to-the-Devils but I just can’t stay away from all the trade talk. FML.

Skoula just went to the Devils, apparently.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

Just as I hit publish..

Skoula is sent to the Devils… no one really cares though so I guess it’s OK it’s just in the comments rather than the actual post.

ESPN insider rumor mill updates

As I mentioned before, most of these are probably untrue and useless, but today is the day for that kind of thing.

Also to be noted, most of these “updates” are regurgitated tweets from McKenzie or Dreger, but I’m not on twitter. The ones I am posting, either directly involve the hawks, loosely involve the hawks, or are just kind of interesting. Below are the espn headlines, followed by the rumor info in blockquote.

Vokoun to Hawks, Flyers?

UPDATE: TSN’s Darren Dreger tweets that Vokoun could still be headed to the Blackhawks or Flyers.
UPDATE: Tomas Vokoun tells the Miami Herald that if there’s a deal in place involving him, GN Randy Sexton will bring it to him so he can decide whether to waive his no-trade clause or not.

Habs getting offers for Price, Halak

At this point, most believe Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak won’t be dealt. But the Globe and Mail reports that GM Pierre Gauthier is getting offers for his goalies, and he’s listening.
Still, he remains firm that he won’t deal those guys, because he wants to ride them into the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the Habs are looking at other deals on the market. They may be dangling Maxim Lapierre, Glen Metropolit or Paul Mara and seeking draft picks or prospects in return.

Can Hawks deal Huet?

The Chicago Blackhawks are reportedly trying to deal Cristobal Huet, but with a $5.6 million cap hit for two more years, it’ll be tough.
Rumors had the Leafs talking the Maple Leafs (but not for Huet), Panthers (for Tomas Vokoun) and the Islanders (for Martin Biron or Dwayne Roloson). It appears they’re trying to find a goalie, but they want to get rid of Huet, too.
The Chicago Daily Herald asked coach Joel Quenneville about it, and he refused to comment on the situation.
Huet lost his starting job to Antti Niemi shortly before the Olympic break. But if last night’s showing against the Islanders is any indication, the Hawks will try very hard to land a netminder today.

Caps trading for Tim Thomas?

We thought the Washington Capitals weren’t going to trade for a goalie, but the New York Post has an “inside source” who says they’re looking to deal Jose Theodore and a forward to Boston for Tim Thomas.
We know Thomas is potentially on the block, and we know the Caps have been sniffing around goalies.
Last month, Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli was quietly trying to talk with teams about trading Thomas, but word got out. Thomas, however, may not want to waive his no-trade clause, and he is irked by this trade talk. However, since it looks like the B’s have already given Tuukka Rask the keys to the crease, Thomas may OK a deal.

Vokoun to Hawks, Flyers?

UPDATE: TSN’s Darren Dreger tweets that Vokoun could still be headed to the Blackhawks or Flyers. Vokoun could waive his no-trade clause there because Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos tweets: “Tomas Vokoun has told Randy Sexton he will lift his no trade to a small list of contending teams only.”

Roloson, Biron trade buzz grows

UPDATE: ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun tweets: “just heard from Marty Biron.. sitting by his phone.”
*
There are sources that say a deal sending Dwayne Roloson to Philadelphia is agreed to “in principle,” but TSN’s Bob McKenzie replies to that and says nothing is done.
McKenzie also adds that he hasn’t heard anything about Roloson going to Chicago for Cristobal Huet.

Tanguay, others could be dealt

UPDATE: A trade is likely coming. TSN’s Bob McKenzie tweets, “Tampa Bay players have been told their flight has been pushed back to 3:30 ET and not to be surprised if there are moves made.”
There’s also buzz they could be eyeing Raffi Torres or Kris Versteeg, the Tribune reports.

Versteeg!

I really don’t think they can trade Huet. If they trade for another goalie, Huet maybe gets buried in the minors.

by Delta0ne1 on Mar 3, 2010 10:17 AM CST up reply actions

Versteeg & Buf are likely to go - I wouldn't weigh in on who's more likely

It would depend on what theother team is after (a) size and frustrating inconsistency or (b) skill and frustrating inconsistency

The goalie situation is likely big in the Hawks’ brass thinking – but the market is sparse and we’ve got a high Cap issue with Huet

Commercials

I hate these abused animal commercials…they make me sad

by punchdrunkcabbie on Mar 3, 2010 10:17 AM CST reply actions

Oh christ..

NHL Network plays these “stop animal cruelty” ads just about every commercial break. It depresses the hell out of me. I may have to start drinking now…

by Matthew Dirt on Mar 3, 2010 10:18 AM CST reply actions

They have to play those to fill commercial spots

because, I think, they’re PSAs, and they must not have the ad time bought up enough to play actual PAID commercials. It wouldn’t surprise me, as I read a report yesterday that said ad spend was down $13.4 BILLLLLION over all media outlets.

does it annoy anyone else...

How often people use the “organ-I-zation” phrase? I feel like the emphasis on “I” refers to someone being selfish, and peole throw it out there outside of that context (see Rosenbloom)

I have a strange feeling that Bowman will do nothing at all.

by punchdrunkcabbie on Mar 3, 2010 10:32 AM CST up reply actions

I’d be disappointed if he didn’t. While I’m a proponent of things not being broke and fixes for them and what not, the Hawks are over the cap and have a logjam at forward, and deals are going to have to be made in the offseason anyway. Why not try to get something for a few of the assets for a cup push this year?

There is a long list of problems on this team.

PP is fucking clownshoes
The defence is playing like they’re actual clowns
The goalies flat out suck
Kopecky still falls on his ass
Kane may have cured his laziness but it’s spread to everyone else

This has become a systemic failure. There is only one move that can fix all these issues.

Trade Quenneville. Bring in a new coach.

I think it would be hard to rationalize that considering the record he has amassed here over the better part of the last 2 years and a run to the conference finals. I am not sure how serious your comment is but I am assuming you are being somewhat sarcastic. I don’t agree with some of Q’s decisions such as the incessant line juggling, the unnecessarily long experiment of Buff on the point of the PP, etc. but I think he runs a pretty good bench. Here is an option…BRING BACK KEENAN…(sarcasm should not be missed here.)

Trade Deadline

I would like to see the Hawks go for the Gold this year. I mean, go for the Cup. Niemi was rusty last night and I think that’s ok. In lieu of trading for a goalie, I’d rather see the Hawks acquire Neidermeyer and Kovalchuk. Stick it out with Niemi. Other than Kane, Toews, Seabrook and Keith, anyone else is expendable.

The team is healthy again and as such have more players than roster spots. They also have a few players at Rockford that can fill in. Skille, Bickle… Burish is back, Bolen is back, Hendry has showed he can play.
