Who's Been Talking? - Trade Deadline Live Blog - FINAL HOUR
And now the final countdown begins - cue Europe.
To this point there's been depth abound changing hands, with Phoenix really helping themselves out acquiring Wojtek Wolski and Mathieu Schneider. The Kings added some leadership with Jeff Halpern, and the Capitals acquired the rugged Scott Walker and versatile Eric Belanger.
Our Men of Four Feathers have been quiet to this point, and reports are coming in that it appears that the Hawks are staying put. A lot could change in this hour, though. I wouldn't be overly disappointed if nothing happens, but the right deal could really help the team for the last part of the season as well as April and beyond.
The last hour and the immediate aftermath should be fun with all the late breaking deals, so stick with us a little bit after 2PM as the last second stuff comes filtering down.

Toskala to Calgary...
Wow…if 2 teams could move that POS, anything is possible.
So...
If nothing happens today, do guys like Versteeg, Sharp, Buff and Huet suddenly explode with upside because the pressure of possibly getting traded is removed?
we were
discussing that today at work…i think youll see major play improvement from steeger and huet…buff on the other hand…..
I'm wondering -
will the booing for Huet subside knowing that he isn’t going anywhere?

I don't *mind* Huet...
…and think these Hawks could still make a run for it with him. But seriously, this is the guy you’re pinning your Cup hopes on? I wonder why there is so much vitriol for people that want to see a big marquee goalie between the pipes here.
My cup hopes are pinned on Toews, Kane, Hossa, Keith, Seabrook, Hammer, Sharp, and Campbell
The guy behind them could be Huet or Vokoun and the result will likely be the same.

I believe they are pinning their hopes on the fact that, as a team,
the Hawks are one of NHL’s best.
And the vitriol is aimed not at people who are unable to acknowledge the reality that you cannot just snap your fingers and receive an NHL marquee goalie between the pipes. You sound like one of those people, and I feel myself getting all fucking vitriolic already.

LeBrun and Burnside
Trying to keep people in their chat and interested with the possibility of post deadline revealings. This day has just been too quiet for anyone to have excitement today.
Im not sure
if it is disappointing or not that the Hawks did nothing. The only position that made any sense was goalie and even though they both suck, not really anything out there to improve the situation. I am actually a bit surprised they did not move a few overpaid underused guys for a role player or two that would be gone after the season to clear up some salary cap issues but I am sure that will work itself out over the summer. Ho hum. Hip hip Huet.
I'm not surprised.
Rocky made it abundantly clear in his interview on Waddle and Silvy that they’re not going to move guys just for the sake of cap space. They said they’d only make a deal if it made sense to the team. The media chose not to listen to what he had to say. The Blackhawks have a great chance to win the cup now. Why would you screw with a good thing just for the sake of what may or may not be a problem in the future?

There’s no way to tell whether any other move would result in a better playoff run than the one we’ll be having, because we don’t have the luxury of picking alternate realities for fun just to see what would happen if we did this or that.

"All questions must be submitted in writing"
but...but.....in movies they do
like The Butterfly Effect
"In an ideal world I would have all 10 fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching."
That's true
But will we win the cup with the goaltending tandem that played yesterday? Doubtful.
It’s not even that though. I think by sitting pat and doing nothing, we made the cap situation tougher to handle next season. Just feels like something should’ve been done to at least address that.
by Ban on Mar 3, 2010 2:31 PM CST up reply actions
I know I don't care about next year until this one is over.
This is why you play all the games.
It’s easy for us to “chat” abot what Stan and the guys should have done. Was anything he could have done better than what he has? Apparently, he thinks not. He likes the team he has better than the change he could have made.
Get behind the goalies. If they play just a little better (last night not included) Hawks win cup.
"All questions must be submitted in writing"
I'm behind the goalies
I’ll back them up as long as they play on the team and I do think they both have talent. Niemi is still young but he shows a ton of potential. Huet, when he wants to play, can be a beast.
But more often than not, the team has to score 4-5 goals to win a game, sometimes just to bring it into OT. That’s not a really reasonable expectation. I’d just like to see some more consistency is all. If Huet could play like he did when they first started talking about him changing his play style (which he seems to have stopped doing) I’d be more than happy.
by Ban on Mar 3, 2010 2:41 PM CST up reply actions
I disagree with the 4-5 goals
team GAA says much different.
For both goalies
"All questions must be submitted in writing"
The thing is
it’s clear a lot of people will not be satisfied by less than the Stanley Cup this year anymore. And that’s okay—neither will I. But I can’t help thinking that anything less than the Cup will have everyone pointing their fingers towards the goaltending, which may or may not be the case, and that’ll bring out a lot of “we should have traded for this or that when we could.”
But how do we know those trades would have resulted in better playoff runs? We can’t ever know that for sure one way or another. The “what if” is going to be a favorite argument from here on out, and it’s just something you can’t expect to defend unless we do actually win the Cup.
In which case everyone clamoring for a goalie would go right ahead and say we won it despite our goaltending anyway.
Does this explain the facepalm now?
This also applies to trading for what other bit roles and pieces were available today, by the way. None of the names that popped up sounded particularly appealing to me. Definitely not more than Kris Versteeg or Dustin Byfuglien. Seriously, the best option for us is probably to stay with what we have. Just because options exist does not necessarily make them better options. It’s like buying these for 50 cents because you had 50 cents on you. Sure, it’s a bargain, but you still bought fucking clown shoes.

That's what so great about it!
You can hate Huet/Niemi, and say a trade would have won us a cup and not be wrong! If the Hawks win, then it was because the guys in front of them played so well. If we lose, even if we lose 4 games in the finals by scores of 2-1, 1-0, 3-2, and 2-0, it’s totally the fault of the goaltending!
It’s a perfect position to take!
Chicagoan in the Lou.
This is only true...
…if the haters knew the Hawks wouldn’t make a goaltending deal. I don’t give them that much credit.
Had the Hawks made a deal and not won the Cup, the haters would be in the firing line.
I have been 100% consistent in feeling that a “savior” goalie was an illusion. I’m glad all the stupid talk will stop now.
But, the Hawk goalies are playing their worst all year lately.
Huet’s defenders are already bracing for the torrent from haters if the Hawks don’t win the Cup. But that’s silly.
It’s likely true that if the Hawks don’t win the Cup, it will be due to realtively weak goaltending. But this doesn’t make the haters right. There never was a saavior. Don’t be so reactive- just ignore the hate.
Semi-related: great rec’d post above, Martin. Best, most succinct thoughts on this thread.
Then you follow up with a “sarcastic” anti-Huet jibe. These unfunny comments are becoming pervasive on this site (and often rec’d), but it seems to me they also reflect a “hater’s on the brain” mindset that is not worhty of you.
Oh well
The next few games against Vancouver, Detroit and Washington will tell the truth about what this team has.
Sadly, I think it was an epic fail not to make a deal for a goalie when your are this close. If sending Huet to Rockford was the final option to clear space for a goalie, and they chose not to, that tells me right there that they will not go the extra mile to win.
Has Rocky done us fans a favor – yes – it is nice to have a competitive team again. That being said….
This is now a McDonough-marketed franchise. There is more money to be made in the endless pursuit of “ONE GOAL” by being good enough to compete, but perpetually needing just one more piece, and sucking all of us idiots in along the way.

Maybe Miller should get a little blame since he had a clear view of Crosby and the puck.

How about this?
Iginla made a beautiful pass to Crosby who shot the puck instantaneously and scored on a suprised Miller.
Rafalski was beaten to the net because just before he reached the puck it hit the refs skate and Crosby slapped it forward to Iginla who then made a great play.

And please don’t forget that in McDonough, the Hawks have the same person the Tribune had while running the Cubs.
This run has been good. And the management team can and should be congratulated for more than resurrecting a dead franchise. They are now “competitive”. But in my humble opinion, they missed an opportunity to really seal the deal.

1. Huet to Rockford – $5.625 off cap
2. Then go after Vokoun – even up money – give em Versteeg and a pick
3. If not Vokoun, then Roloson – a $2.5MM cap hit – net savings
The blocker to any deal was Huet and his contract. Send him down, fix him, bury him, whatever….. Are you telling me that an extra $5MM would mean a hill of beans to the owners if they won the cup? They would make that money back hand over fist.

Your point is based on a circular argument then.
You base it on needing to spend more money to get better in order to make more money, but now they cant make more money because they are sold out…ughhh, brain short circuit. The incentive is to maintain that base of fans and continue to sell out….See 90s Bulls ticket demand and memorabilia sales to current Bulls ticket demand and memorabilia sales and for example.
No, actually
I said that it was NOT about money, it was about wanting to win.
They obviously can make more money as the popularity of the team, the brand and the sport as a result of their successes. It just becomes a diminishing return thing once the stadium sells out and we all fill up on concessions and beer.
So it ultimately comes down to how badly do you want to win.

You misunderstand me
What I am saying is that a goalie was the last piece we needed to pretty much be bulletproof.
And having weak goaltending – pretty evident in the last month’s worth of games – is kind of an Achilles’ Heel.
And the sky is not falling – this is a great team. I go to a lot of games. I do not yell SHOOT. I do not boo Huet. And I am guessing I have kids older than many of you who post here.
I am upset that we missed a chance to make the team better. And all I was suggesting was that moving Huet to Rockford would have given us the cap space to take on a decent goalie, and we had assets to trade to make that happen as long as Huet’s contract was not an obstacle.
Ultimately it was a business decision not to do that, and not a “win it” decision.

Really?
I thought our Achilles has been shotty defense, giving up too many turnovers in our own zone, and a power play that grips their stick too tight. The goaltending hasn’t been great, but it really hasn’t been bad either (er, besides last night…).
I think you’re also understating the price of a decent goalie in the NHL. I don’t see how VERSTEEG! Skille, and some picks got it done. Would you give up a top 5 NHL goalie for a 3rd liner, AHL player, and a late-1st round draft pick? The price would have included Sharpie at least, and that’s just too much.

What I would like to suggest though is that maybe you hold off for a few weeks on the sky is falling freak out and give Huet/Niemi a chance to perform without distractions. We all know their performance hasn’t been great of late and we get that. You are right. But the law of averages suggests they are just slumping and will pick their game up, hopefully soon. Well,
only one team will and there certainly are a bunch of really good teams so odds are in your favor on that one and have been since the puck drop on opening night. However, none of your proposed dump salary move people to Rockford, plan for next years complaints would have gotten them any closer THIS YEAR. As you see now, it appears no one was willing to part with goalies and that is the only thing this team really would have benefited from.
Why not?
Every team has holes and even in net.
San Jose – Joe Thornton+Nabokov+Playoffs=golf
Vancouver – Sedins can score and……..???? plus Luongo is good but overrated in my opinion he seemed very shaky in the gold medal game to me.
Calgary – nope
Detroit – can they stay healthy?
Colorado – Can Anderson carry them all the way? I say no.
Phoenix – Nice team but they are just that.
Nashville – in a 7 game series they won’t beat us.
List was very quick and dirty so please don’t nitpick and I don’t want to explain the Eastern Conference b/c we’ll kill them :).

What if we get November/December calibre golatending?
Is this so far-fetched?
If this happens, who on earth would beat the Hawks?
Exactly.
The one team I’m afraid of is probably Vancouver. Although we beat them last year I feel they’ll have learned from their mistakes and stick to a trapping physical style. When they have implemented that game plan against us they have done very well against us. And that is the only system I believe we get too impatient in playing against and shoot ourselves in the foot.
After what Toews and Co. Pulled on Ovi in the Olympics?
Turns out our captain and one of our top scorers is also maybe the best defensive forward in the league.
Yep
but our 2nd 3rd and 4th line centers are sadly not Toews.
I still think the Hawks win against anybody in a series.
"All questions must be submitted in writing"
I think you’re underestimating the importance Ladd and Madden will have if we play the Capitals. They can absolutely throw off a gamebreaker like Semin by being physical with him. That guys disappears the second he gets tapped/
I did not say the Hawks would lose a series to Washington
I will say again
No current NHL team can beat the Hawks in a 7 game series.

Detroit is fighting just to make the playoffs
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah they had a lot of injuries. Jimmy howard is a rookie goalie. He’s not Roy or Dryden. I live in GR where he has played the lest several years and have gone to a ton of Griffins games. He is not going tobe able to handle it this year.
Vancouver is another story.
"All questions must be submitted in writing"
Those are 2 that worry me
I think Van has shown w/ the Scum they can. My hope is either Detroit gets that 8th spot or no play offs. As for Van, if they can just keep the division or that 6th (i think) then “maybe” another match up later in the playoffs.
All this goalie shit and debates about what we have, dont have is really pissing me off. We can beat anyone. HOWEVER the hawks need to play back to there strengh of team D, Speed, out working the opposing team…basics!

reflect that everything I was saying back then about Huet has come to fruition and is why everyone is now losing their minds. I was not sure if Niemi was good or not at the time and he has proven he cannot carry the load either. As I said back then, I was not sure if there was any possible solution, but I could see the holes in both goalies and knew this day was coming. However, that being said, if this team goes back to playing the way it did in November and December, they will win the cup.

I just met Stan Mikita
He couldn’t have been a nicer, more friendly guy. A friend of mine is showing him around and introducing him to some people today and I happend to walk by. Whenever I meet famous people I usually try to leave them alone so I wasn’t really trying to start a conversation, just be nice. But we wound up talking about everything Hawks. He said that on opening night when the legends all skated out for introductions the guy who sharpened his skates cut them the opposite of the way he prefers so he almost couldn’t stop. We talked a little bit about the defense and we agreed that the defensive lapses will get better as the intensity ratchets up again for the playoffs.
But mostly he wanted to know if I knew anything about the trade deadline. I told him that the Hawks stood pat and he was really happy. He felt that the team we have gives the Hawks the best chance to win, and the goaltending will be fine. I talked about how last night really put the pressure on, but he was very clear that it was just one bad game and those things happen.
Just a really nice guy though. If any of you ever come across him go say hi, you’ll be glad you did.
I was at the game
and I am sure you have all seen the video…it did look like he had quite a problem stopping when he skated out there. If cops were on the ice I think Bobby Hall would have gotten a dui on skates for his weave out to center ice. I will defer to Stan Mikita’s opinion of the Hawk’s approach to today.
Hull is in the Hall (of fame) not the other way around
And to Scott13 – very cool about Mikita, who was another idol of mine as a kid. Similarly I ran into Billy Williams and Ernie Banks on separate occasions at O’Hare back in the late ‘80s. Two of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. Had one-on-one conversations with each of them for 15-20 minutes.
Yes
but not Bobby Hall. But good catch.
And Esquire, I figured it was a typo but no one lets anything slip on here… LOL
My dad used to golf with Stan - he is indeed a great guy.
I remember going to my first live Hawks game (about 1967 or 1968) and Stan came by the boards where our seats were and tossed a puck over the chicken wire to us at the end of warm ups.
Smoked like a chimney and wore hideous golf pants, but a really great guy.
The nice thing about hockey
there’s always older/slower leagues to get into

Hey guys, it's me.
Did something happen today? I see a lot of comments, but we haven’t played yet.
Was something going on today that I wasn’t aware of?

Not good
The last 15 games are not indicative of a team that can win a Stanley Cup.
The defense has been tiring and going south. The goaltending has gone down the crapper. Of course these two things go hand in hand. But damnit all the Hawks needed to press hard for Vokoun in my estimation.
Plus now the added dilemma is that Bowman will be forced to sell cheap this offseason to get rid of contract dough. He’s going to get taken to the cleaners as a result.
Damnit.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
You're right, 15 games out of an 82 game season aren't a good indicator of the teams ability to win the cup
But the other 67 cangive you a pretty good idea.
At least you finally spelled Vokoun right.
Tremendously tremendous
Ugh the thing that annoys me to death is that it was never alive.
The Hawks were never eating 5.7million by stashing Huet in the minors. It’s bad business, anyone with an ounce of sense can see that. Which means Huet would need to be included in the trade, and Florida was never taking a lesser goalie for more money and an extra year of him to boot.
Plus out of the assets the Hawks are, or should be willing to part with, none of them were enough to make a trade of that caliber happen. Versteeg? He’s secondary scoring with a slightly inflated cap hit. If you’ve paid any attention to the deadline in any year, secondary scoring is what’s available in surplus. Translation: he’s not that valuable in a trade. Byfuligien? He’s Kopecky in a larger body. Not aggressive enough to be effective on the fourth line. Not defensively tenacious enough for the third line. Not skilled enough for the top two. A trading partner might just be enticed by that size, but again, he carries a 3mil cap hit and he’s not much more than a project at this point. I saw Beach suggested to complete this trade as well. Not a chance, as the organization will be looking to him by 2011 to be the primary young forward to fill in for all the bodies they’ll need to let go.
Tremendously tremendous
And Beach, of course, is still a total gamble
he’s not the centerpiece of a big trade, he gets tossed in to tip the scale at the end
Fan Post
I posted something about streaming broadcasts and where to find them and it appears to have been obliterated. When I click on it, it says page not found even though it is listed there and even shows new replies. Is there something about the streams that is not supposed to be posted?
Well, if you think about it
They are of questionable legality… that’s what NHL GameCenter and Center Ice are for. Or passing comments in various GDTs…
