Wonders Never Cease
-I've spent my fair share of time ripping on Steve Rosenbloom, but only because I know that he's capable of writing articles like this. Read it and tell me if there's one incorrect syllable in it. Rosey once was, and can still be, the most hockey-wise columnist in this city outside of the beat reporters.
I was going to write a post today that basically would have echoed this. I said I wouldn't panic until April hits, and I'm going to try and stick by that. That doesn't mean I'm not worried, because I am. While I don't think any of the goals Scum scored could be pinned on Huet alone, he was a long way from brilliant as well.
From where I sit, the goalie situation and the breakdown of the defense lately seem to be a vicious cycle. The d-men are playing scared at times, fearing any mistake or turnover has a decent to good chance of ending up in a goal. On the flip side, Huet especially and Niemi at times look like they're standing on nails, fearing that their d-men are going to leave them exposed at any second. These guys spend minutes at a time doing nothing, and then out of nowhere they are facing prime chances. As one loses faith in the other, it gets worse and worse. I want to believe that if we see improvement from one side, the other will follow suit in a hurry. But the only thing that will make a difference is see it.
-Though we like to make fun, I am a firm believer that you can say whatever you want in our comments, within reason of course. Similarly, I think that once you pay for your ticket (and if you're getting them secondhand you're probably paying a lot) you are free to boo or cheer as you please, within reason again. So I understand the booing of Huet that the drop of a hat, and that's the 19k's right. But what does it have left to accomplish? I am not one of those blind, "love your players no matter what and stupidly cheer them no matter what they do" people, otherwise known as Packers and St. Louis Cardinals fans. But as I and The Fifth Feather said in October, what good will come of turning every game into a road game for Huet? Is that going to build his confidence? I know it'll continue until his play improves, but I'm not sure I see the logic in it any more.
-I'd also like to remind those who are baying at the organization for Huet's contract and how it tied Stan's hands. Cast your mind back to the summer of 2008. Dale Tallon, his assistant Stan Bowman, and John McDonough knew they had a team that was capable of some pretty great things. They also knew they had a goalie who'd put up three consecutive years of puke-worthy play in Khabibulin. They weren't going anywhere with a goalie as bad as Khabby had been. So they decided to upgrade, and whether you like it or not, Huet was the best on the market. He was coming off a stellar display in the spring in Washington (and if he gets anywhere near that form this spring everything's gonna be just fine). Maybe they gave him too many years, I don't know if they overpaid because I don't know what other teams offered. But to keep harping about "the mistake of signing Huet", I just don't see it as a mistake.
-One thing I'm relieved about with the goalie debate is it provides cover from people noticing that Brian Campbell's play has dropped off. While he hasn't been terrible (though he certainly was yesterday) he's certainly no where near the level he was in December and January. When the Hawks were really rolling, Campbell was one of the bigger reasons why. He constantly had the Hawks in transition and was a one man trap-buster. Now he's a little more hesitant and his passing isn't is crisp. Here's another thing the Hawks need to see back to its highest level in the next five weeks.

Too easy
Here’s a few incorrect syallables:
Someone needs to remind them that management either failed to trade for a goalie or chose not to because the organ-I-zation didn’t want to yank anyone out of what appears to be a tight-knit dressing room.
Perhaps it had more to with the inability to move a toxic contract than management’s failure to trade for a goalie.

Agree...
…I tend to think Bowman was trying as hard as he could to land a goaltender, but the circumstances just didn’t allow it to happen.
To make a trade, you do need a willing partner, and sometimes they try to rake you through the coals.

I don't get your point
Wouldn’t the “inability to move a toxic contract” qualify as a failure to trade for a goalie?
All right, come on, dummy, you won the game. Come on. Pick up your trophy.
I get it.
A lot of people seem to be implying that the Hawks didn’t even TRY to make a trade.

I still don’t understand El Duque’s point. Is he saying that the Hawks didn’t try to make a trade? Or is he interpreting Rosenbloom’s words as saying that the Hawks didn’t try to make a trade?
All right, come on, dummy, you won the game. Come on. Pick up your trophy.
My interpretation
is that El Duque is saying the Hawks may have tried to make a trade but Huet’s salary made it virtually impossible, contrary to what Rosenbloom wrote.
by Badgerdano on Mar 8, 2010 8:15 PM CST up reply actions 2 recs
OK
But Rosenbloom didn’t say why the trade attempt had failed, merely that it had failed. It was a hypothetical reason for Huet remaining in Chicago, along with a tight-knit locker room.
All right, come on, dummy, you won the game. Come on. Pick up your trophy.
What Badger said
When Rosenbloom says the Hawks failed to make a trade, to me, it implies there was some deal on the table that management refused to make. There’s been numerous reporters that reported on Bowman trying to move Huet to no avail. Unless, of course, you believe Elliote Friedman’s source who claims the Hawks had a couple of takers on Huet but declined their offers. But I highly doubt Rosenbloom reads him to know about that.
It seems that he’s just piling on this popular theory that Florida or the Islanders wanted to give the Hawks Vokoun or Roloson for Huet and a bag of pucks.

Also from the Goalie Guild:
Probably the biggest fantasy goalie issue right now takes place in Chicago. Huet’s weak performance against Detroit on Sunday has caused quite a ruckus with the fans. Although I’ve explained this many times before, let me just quickly reiterate that Huet does not fit in Chicago’s system, and he never will. He’s a goalie that thrives on being in a rhythm and that is rarely accomplished on a team where the shots and the starts are not consistent. He faces tough scoring chances and very few routine shots, so he’s often caught struggling in games where his timing is off or he just doesn’t tracking the puck effectively enough and ends up over-committing or over-reacting a lot.
To be honest, Huet’s not getting much help. Why Antti Niemi is chosen to start games in situations when it’s not needed is beyond me. If Chicago has any hope of going deep in the playoffs, they have to play Huet every single game from here on out. They can’t take away opportunities for him to get into a rhythm, otherwise he will continue to struggle with timing. Niemi is not a go-to goalie, so I don’t understand the logic behind starting him in the first game back from the Olympics. Chicago doesn’t need points, they need confidence. Every minute counts for a rhythm goalie, especially one that has a history of late-season hot streaks.
This is a guy who isn’t a hater or a supporter one way or another—just someone focused on goalies who probably knows a thing or two about them.
Just, you know. Throwing this out there.

Dryden came up and played 6 games, going 6-0 with a 1.65 GAA and a .957 SV% in the regular season and then went on to win the Conn Smythe (the year before he won the Calder).

I remember at the start of the season
when Huet was struggling and everyone was freaking, someone familiar with Huet from Montreal posted here “not to panic”, that Huet is a goalie who needs multiple starts to get rolling. That has always stuck in the back of my head while watching the juggling act the past couple of months. That’s probably the biggest reason I never joined in the Huet bashing. I’ve just always assumed that if Niemi’s numbers came back to past statistical norms, Huet would get the starting role again later in the season and would get on track for the playoffs. Glad to see that there might be some validity to this and hopefully it all works out. What else is there to say?

as a goalie...
I agree with a lot of what he is saying about getting into a rhythm but that is true of any goalie, not just Huet. Any goalie seeing only 16 -20 shots a game is going to be hard pressed to find a good rhythm. Does that mean the Hawks should dominate puck possession less so their goalie sees more shots? HELL NO! It just means the Hawks have to play 60 full minutes and not take a period off here and there because their cold goalie may give up a few goals.
by Cristobal the Cat on Mar 8, 2010 3:05 PM CST up reply actions 2 recs
welcome to SCH
I think what he’s also saying is that by virtue of starting Huet regardless of his performance in recent games, he’ll be able to find his rhythm. October was atrocious but November/December he was at his best, was he not? Hawks never really gave up more or less shots than they did previously then, either.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

To me
Starting Huet regardless of his performance was something that should’ve been done months ago. When the internet caught on fire after both of the Stars games earlier in the year (just two that pop to mind), that was when Q needed to reinforce Huet as his starter. Now, it’s too late.
Everyone can hope he’s going to get into a rhthym, but it’s looking less and less likely with each passing game.
I’ll also add the author’s claim to Huet being at his best when he gets consistent starts….Huet has never had more than 52 starts in a season so I’m not sure we can say he’s not thriving because he’s not getting enough starts.

Makes sense...
…and when you watch Huet, you can see he is fighting his positioning and really lacks confidence.
With 17 games left, I’ll bet Huet gets one more shot to show he can take control and then it will be turned over to Niemi for the duration if he stumbles.

by MPH73 on Mar 8, 2010 3:22 PM CST up reply actions 2 recs
Niemi can't handle it
That much we’re pretty sure of. So, if Huet stumbles and Q hands it over to Niemi (which is honestly what I think will happen before April), then we’re just going to have to start all over again. Because Niemi is not starting material right now.
Then, Huet’ll have fewer games to establish a rhythm and he’ll have almost no confidence (either of his own or from the bench). Then, when the Hawks win the Cup, it’ll put to rest finally the idea that you need a good goalie to win in June.
All right, come on, dummy, you won the game. Come on. Pick up your trophy.
You don't know...
…whether he can handle it until he gets the opportunity. Some guys rise to the occasion and some don’t.
Goaltending is important, but teams win Stanley Cups not goaltenders. Many goalies (who are considered average) have won cups, and Hawks don’t need someone to be a one man show.

If I would have been at Sunday's game
I would have booed the team as a whole for the poor play in the 2nd period. They owned the Scum for 40 minutes, for the most part, but the game was decided in the middle 20. Unfortunately for us, the Scum took advantage and potted 5.
I also realize that the zebras had a role of some sort in causing some bad calls and no calls. We get our share as well. I tend to think it all comes out in the wash overall.
Huet and Niemi look like world beaters at times and then less than acceptable at times. Even Brodeur has a bad period or night, just not as often lol In a perfect world, our goalies will be able to steal a win or a period now and then by stoning the other team enough to allow us to get our shit together. Sunday it didn’t happen, but at least Niemi stopped all his shots in the 3rd to allow us to get back to within one.
All we can do is hope that our D gets better and the type of play we saw in the 2nd period the other day will be something that happens less and less, especially in the playoffs. We have seen both of our goalies play at a high level, and with the grace of the hockey Gods, this will happen in the playoffs!

My friend booed after one of the goals on Friday and I nearly pitched him over the edge of the 300 level. I think you support your team, or at least stay silent. Whoever gets booed already knows they screwed up. What does 20k people booing do to help that?
I certainly don’t think people shouldn’t have opinions about the team or players. I just think there should actually be a home field/ice advantage.

One disagreement
The Williams goal. Toews and Hendry were all over the guy, he just made a play.
I was pissed about losing but I’m not really worried about this being part of some larger trend. So a young team loses focus during the dog days of the season? You don’t say. Q will beat the shit out of them at practice and they’ll be fine.
I’m more excited about Ladd finding his game with three very skillful goals than I am worried about the Hawks. Ladd’s a good player who’s responsible defensively but he hasn’t been as effective this season as last. Good to see him get going.
I’m tired of waiting for Eager to find the same spark he had last year. I don’t care about his silly penalties and I don’t care whether or not he drops the gloves, but he was a lot of hustle last year and this season he just waits for the puck to come to him. Hopefully the return of Burish brings him back to form.
The goaltending? Yeah I wish it was better, but it’s not and wishing so won’t make it happen. Complaining about people who complain about it has grown just as tiring as complaining about it so I’m done complaining.
Wish I could see Burish in his comeback game. I had skybox tickets but I have to be out of town on Wedsday so I’m pretty bummed. Should be a fun game.

How about
we just keep our Dmen back at the blue line and let the forwards get us a couple goals a game. Play it safer and simple. Protect our goalie. On the defensive side stay in our lanes and stop getting all 5 guys on the side of the ice the pucks on.

I don't care anymore
I will watch the hawks either way. I still love them. They are more exciting than any team I watch, except my kids.
I blame the whole thing on Q. He cannot handle the team he has. Couldn’t handle the Av’s either. He’s better than Savard, but I don’t think he will be the guy that brings this team a cup. The PP is a prime example. Yeah yeah it’s his assistants responsibility. Bullshit! It’s the head coach. Why did Niemi start right after the break? It was a no win situation if Niemi played poorly. He fucked up there, and his team is showing the signs of it. Huet has no confidence because nobody believes in him and his coach fucked him at the wrong time.
I agree with Active stick above. PLAY D. Limit the shots. Let the fucking goals scorers score the goals. Hossa, Toews, Keith, Sharp, Brouwer, Versteeg. God I’m pissed! I have to live with fucking asshole RedWings fans. Fuck them, Fuck Bertuzzi, Fuck Datsyuk, and anybody else making fun of Kaner not being able to defend him. There are Norris Trophy winners who can’t defend him.

Dont know…..don’t know what to think…just listening to Teinowitz and Jurko and Carmen bash the Hawks, saying how they wouldn’t want to face the wings in the playoffs, can’t say i really agree with them, yesterday was one bad game, actually one bad period, the hawks outplayed them in the first period, not by much, but they outpalyed them, they stunk up the second period, and dominated the third period, can’t say I’m afraid of the Wings,at all….
As far as goal tending,donno…..I read someones comments above, and it was something along the lines just give the no.1 to Huet…can’t say i agree with this, let him earn it,or let Niemi earn it….Huet had more than enough starts at the beginning of the season to grab a firm hold of the no.1…and at the beginning of the season when he struggled,he was given a chance to keep the no.1 and i believe he’ll be given a chance now again, hell the guy just got 3 starts in a row!!!dont get me wrong,i bleieve yesterdays loss was a team loss D breakdowns below average goaltending, too many turnovers, and the worst thing is the Hawks still scored 4 goals, and were in it till the end
by csm on Mar 8, 2010 4:48 PM CST reply actions 2 recs
I'm getting a little tired of Q juggling goalies
I don’t think it matters much which of them is designated #1 … but at this point, someone has to be. I’d argue for Niemi, because he appears to be more or less Huet’s equal RIGHT NOW, and due to current age and inexperience has a higher future upside as well. But if someone argues otherwise, fair enough. Like I said, I don’t think it matters much.
But at any rate, the indecision is causing more damage than their actual play, IMO. Cubs fans have been seeing this kind of crap for years – do we play Hee Seop Choi or Eric Karros? Or Felix Pie or Jacques Jones? Or Bobby Hill or Mark Gruzielanek? Or any number of pitchers that might have been decent, but never had a chance to work out their initial struggles (e.g., I think Samardzija sucks ass and will continue to suck ass, but does anyone think the way they’ve handled him has increased the chances he’ll be successful?). By the time they’re done fucking around, the rookie has been randomly jerked around for a year or two and they have to cut bait on the veteran anyway. And what have they accomplished in the meantime? Not a damn thing.
Anyway, not trying to drag the conversation off-topic with Cubs talk, but as always, the franchise serves as a good example of how not to run things. All in all, I’ve been amazed at how well this ‘Hawks franchise has been run over the past couple years. When they weren’t happy with the coach, they acted decisively (well, mostly anyway). Same with Tallon. Same with pursuing Hossa and cutting out Havlat and Khabi. They were controversial moves, but they were evidence of a franchise with a plan.
But I submit that no one has ever accomplished much with the kind of dithering we’re seeing with the goalies, and it needs to stop, one way or the other.

For like a good month, maybe even month and a half they weren’t very good…i think they even had a month with more losses than victories, they were pretty bad,and everyone was saying they wouldn’t get too far in the playoffs,so i guess you never know what is going to happen….but like i wrote,i’m pretty sure they played really good the last 10 games,i’m gonna go look it up and check their actual record….you are right about playing complete bad games last year, where this year it seems like they just play an awful period, and not an awful game

If I remember correctly
Maybe you’re referring to the time Toews was out? People were saying that then. You could make the same argument now, but 1) it’s closer to the end of the season, 2) we’re relatively healthy, and 3) Chicago sports fans will be themselves and find something to gripe about.
That said, I had been chalking up poor play to “playing down to the opposition,” but yesterday stands out as a whopper of an exception to that. Here’s to hoping that coach Q gives everyone a kick in the ass to get them back to high gear.

Because you peaked my interest
I looked it up. Kane played the 30th and New Years Day, then missed the next two games, then tried to play through the injury which was a mistake. From 12/30 to 1/21, Kane played in 10 of the 12 games and recorded only 1 assist in that span. The Hawks went 5-6-1 over that period, not good by any means, but not a bad as I thought either.

I’m relatively new to hockey; having only, really watched the hawks for 2 years. But, from what I’ve gleaned, a successful defense requires symbiosis between net-minder and defensemen. The ‘on-ice’ relationship between Hawks’ goalies and D’men has clearly deteriorated, and I think it started well before the Olympics.
It seems that, of late, ‘super nintendo’ Hjalmarsson hasn’t been his usual mistake-free self. Hopefully, his non-selection to the Swedish team isn’t having a lasting affect. (I still can’t fathom why he wasn’t selected by the Swedes) And, as you said, Campbell’s play has really fallen off from where it was a month ago.
To get the Hawks’ D back on track, I think it starts w the D’men. Once that happens, the Goalie(s) will follow suit .

hammer
is our little secret. Frankly, no one really expected him to selected to the Swedish team, and I don’t think he felt he was “snubbed”. To some outsiders, he’s our 5th d-man. I’m fine with it staying that way for a bit.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

...hammer
I trust your hockey acumen more than mine…
I know there’s a considerable contingent on this blog that really like the hammer; he’s a perfect pairing w our ‘offensive-minded’ defensemen, and he generally plays sound, mistake-free hockey.
I can understand why those who don’t regularly watch the hawks may not be aware of the hammer’s prowess and potential, given that his style of play doesn’t ‘stand out’ per se on this roster. But I would think that collective would be a little higher on this kid than they are (of course, I have no barometer to judge this by –just my own intuition). Is he not held in high regard by other circles or is he just undiscovered? Because someone who posits that the hammer is our #5 defensemen doesn’t know their shit, right?

I really haven't seen much praise for Hammer
that’s written outside Chicago, but I guess the cause for that comment goes back to this comment made by the editor over at Copper & Blue during their Oilers/Hawks GDT:
Just the second goal of the year for Hjalmarsson, continuing the trend of shitty defenseman scoring at will on the Oilers.
Granted, there are likely other things influencing that comment, but then there was also this post about the Cetnral Division trade deadline at ViewFromMySeats:
On the back-end, the Top 4 of Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Brian Campbell and Kim Johnsson is as good as any team in the league. But behind that, they might want a little depth to go with Brent Sopel and Niklas Hjalmarsson. Nice when a team’s biggest need is their 6th defenseman.

Excellent Post, Sam
I don’t know why everyone always bashes Rosenbloom—-I’ve always liked him (love the snark!) because for a lot of years he was the only one who even covered the Hawks with any real passion or intelligence. Yeah, I think he does a lot of theatrics and conspiracy theories to spice things up, but a lot of his serious analysis is usually spot on. And he nailed it with the column today.
I’m still not all that worried about the Hawks. They have shown an ability to raise their game when they need to. They also seem to respond well to a wake-up call. Several of them made comments after the game about not playing for a full 60, and that they’ve been guilty of that a lot lately. They KNOW what’s going on—I trust that they’ll be able to fix it. And the simple, harsh truth is that to get to the Cup they’re going to have to get by the Sharks, the Canucks, and the Scum. All teams that can give them trouble, but, well, that’s why it’s so darn hard to win the thing. Right now, fix the powerplay and get ready for the Kings.

I am not one of those blind, “love your players no matter what and stupidly cheer them no matter what they do” people, otherwise known as Packers and St. Louis Cardinals fans
Hey, that was not nice at all. Only people who are blind on the Packers is their defence (except Charles Woodson).

The Huet contract
I don’t know if they overpaid because I don’t know what other teams offered.
I’ve heard many times over on TSN that Washington was willing to give Huet the monetary value at $5.6 million but not the term of 4 years. The maximum McPhee, the Capitals GM, as willing to give was 3 years thus Huet got 4 from Chicago and signed here.
Let’s face it Khabibulin was a total clusterfuck of a deal and I hoped the ’Hawks would ever find themselves in that similar situation again. Unfortuantely, they have but I do agree with Sam that the management had to do something in terms of netminding and at that point it was either Huet or Theodore. Take your pick.

More on Huet
I hope he gets the start on Wednesday just to try to get him some confidence going into the playoffs and hope he’ll turn it around. The more starts he gets the better he may get. Getting Huet into a rhythm is the best solution and giving him more starts between now and April 18th is the best solution in my opinion.
For whatever reason this team reminds me of the 2003-2004 Senators who had an unstoppable team in the regular season but struggled in goal all season. Come playoff time it was the other way around until that infamous Game7. Was Lalime terrible in that game? Yes. Was he at fault for losing that series? No. Yet Lalime took the blame for another series loss to the Leafs eventhough his team only scored a total of 2 goals in thier 4 losses to Toronto.
In the end, I feel it will be our offence and defence that will win or lose a playoff series for the ’Hawks and NOT our goaltending. It might cost us one game in a 7-game series but not the whole series. However, their PP and unnecessary neutral zone turnovers just might.
"The Golden Goal! And Canada has - once in a lifetime - Olympic Gold!"
Congratulations to The Golden Boys- Toews, Seabrook, and Keith- for delivering the GOLD to CANADA.

man from france
Fifth Feather has posted an anti-Huet manifesto, and their #1 fanboy Mike Kiley is quoting it verbatim. Our bellwether, Eddie O long ago jumped ship on the Huet bandwagon.
But in all likelihood it’s Huet that starts the next dozen and a half games, and the playoffs.
Let’s all drink some red wine and toast his success. Or pray. Pray really hard.

I can't believe the way
the North Stars ran after Eddie O and gooned it up right off the draw. Good to see Larmer and the Hawks power play convert though. Tough seeing Dirk Graham in a North Stars sweater though.
Am I the only one watching this game? This is awesome.

SAVARD
nails a slapper from the right circle to take the lead after Minny had tied it with a power play goal after a Dino Ciccarelli dive.
And just that quickly the fuckers tie it at 2. Crap, I wish the 85 Hawks had Huet right now.

Some Observations about this game
Wow, I forgot how tough Bannerman was in that game – funny how good a stand-up goaltender he was.
Notice how much smaller and slower these guys were back in 1985?
Notice how short the glass was around the boards? And no protective net behind the goals?
When Minnesota scored, there was no foghorn. Just a lot of cheering. I brought this up before in a post a few months ago…seems like Chicago was ahead of the curve when it came to the big foghorns. I don’t think any other team had that in ’85.

Totally right on Bannerman
what a stud. I was way premature on my earlier remarks. The goalie equipment is so small it’s amazing they don’t score 10 goals a game.

whenever they hear those chants is downright hilarious. “But guys, you know Detroit doesn’t REALLY suck, right? I mean, you know we won 17 Cups, right? That means we don’t ACTUALLY suck, doesn’t it?”
If you seriously need validation from the little runt of a club that you treated like your farm team and kicked around for all these years, just because they call you names and you can’t see the humor—however ironic—in that, then there is something profoundly wrong with you.

My 2 cents…I just hope the team as a whole gets in together like the Nucks game. I Went against Detroit and it was painful seeing 5 in one period. The D, goaltending. I still think as I’m sure everyone said they need to play the 60. Granted I know there is still 5 weeks and I’m not the “sky is falling” or some shit but I do think when we start to get going I think people can settle down.. (or not)

still mind boggling
How a player of his caliber was at one time mediocre, and was questionable whether he could make it in the NHL. I always picture a guy like that as being the best player on the ice at all times as he grew up and made his way through the minors, and then its just a matter of course that they play well in the NHL. The fact that he had to struggle and work to get this good makes watching him all the more enjoyable.
by K_Dog on Mar 9, 2010 11:35 AM CST up reply actions 2 recs
being only 150 pounds made a big difference in how his potential was viewed
While there are some “Gretzky” type guys that were the cream of the crop from Mites on through, a lot more of the guys were simply far more persistant and motivated than their peers. A couple of long career NHL layers I’ve known have said they were never the best player on any team they ever played on – they were “good”/“not great” but kept advancing due to persistance/coachablilty/hard work/refusing to give up.
