Back To The Issues That Really Matter

Anyway, back to the ice, which is what we really care about.  According to Jesse Rogers, Antti Niemi will start tomorrow's game against LA.  In my mind, Niemi then must get almost all of the starts from here on out.  Otherwise, Coach Q is needlessly points-chasing, which helped get us in this mess in February.  These 17 games left are all about getting the team in playoff shape.  First and foremost is getting one of the goalies into a rhythm and finding confidence.   They're cemented in the #2 seed, and I don't know of anyone who thinks it's vital to have the #1 seed.  Sure, it sounds cool, and the idea of starting every series at home appeals.  But you might do that anyway after another San Jose crash and burn, and even if that doesn't happen the Hawks don't require home-ice to dispatch those softies.  You're not going to catch the Caps for the President's Trophy.  Their conference and division especially are far too weak for them to drop enough points to be caught.  So if Q's going with Niemi or bust, that's fine.  If this is more goalie-jockeying for points, then I'm going to have to object.

My hope...

…is for Q to give Niemi somewhere around 8 of the next 10 games and just let him go.

If he doesn’t take hold, you basically know it is going to be Huet and you’ll have 7 games to get him ready for the playoffs.

He will...

given on how Niemi performs on Wed against a solid LA team. They can score, the D is fast moving and there goaltending has been pretty consistent this season w/ Quick (score 1 for my fantasy team)

Given that Huet is the vet & ought to be the #1 guy

If I were in Q’s place, I’d be focusing on him for the first half ot the remaining regular season games.

I’d sit him down and tell him he has the helm and will get all the time (except the weaker opponent of back to back games), the shepherd’s hook is gone and Huet is lashed to the crossbar to work it out.

If he consistently shits the bed through that stretch under that scenario, drop a couple hundred bucks in Melrose Park and have him whacked – then it would be up to Niemi and Crawford to see who can channel the spirit of Ken Dryden from 1971.

by krome on Mar 9, 2010 3:05 PM CST up reply actions

Agree with this

except for the whacking part. he has kids.

Huet’s shown that he can get out of a funk earlier in the year which led to a pretty nice November and December. However, I think Q’s definition of a “hot goalie” is different than mine if he thought Niemi was hot leading up to the Olympic break. I thought the team was just good enough in most of those games to win, with some luck and shootouts thrown in.

by Katherine215 on Mar 9, 2010 3:32 PM CST up reply actions

the whacking part was - mostly - facetious

at $5 a year, he ought to have insurance (nah, I just won’t pursue that line of snark).

When I coached the kids’ team, I was more of the split games mindset – but that is youth sports where I thought everyone ought to play at least a little. I would frequently have the goalies split each period roughly evenly (so neither would entirely cool down – and I didn’t go too long a stretch without having the opportunity to discuss what had gone on in his playing time). But the Hawks ain’t youth sports (where mom & dad are paying fees and driving a lot)

by krome on Mar 9, 2010 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

I know, I was kidding

Kids sports is totally different. Of course, they should all get a chance, especially young kids.

by Katherine215 on Mar 9, 2010 5:23 PM CST up reply actions

Exaclty what I said yesterday

I thought Q would come right back with Huet and give him time to show he can take control. If he fails, you still have time to get Niemi sharp before the playoffs.

In the back of my mind, I’m thinking Q’s preference is for Niemi to take charge here and run with it. Huet is a veteran, and you basically know (for the most part) what you are going to get with him. Q may think Niemi has a higher ceiling, and his floor is probably not any worse than Huet’s.

Who can forget Dryden from 71. He was the main reason the Candians beat two teams (the Bruins and Hawks) who outplayed the Canadiens in both those series.

Q's preference

I agree with you. I think he’s really been hoping Niemi would just take it over. Why else would he keep playing him leading up to the Olympics? Those were not “hot goalie” wins to me.

He was damn good, but he got a little lucky as well – Bobby Hull’s shot off the cross bar that would have made game seven 3-0 and it would have been all over.

4-5 years ago...

…I took the kids to meet Bobby Hull at Fox Valley ice arena during an autograph signing. I asked him if he remembered that shot, and he said he has vivid memories of it. He said one inch lower and the flood gates would have been open and they would have won the game going away.

Was that the ice fog game?

I happened to be across the aisle with Keith Magnuson coming back from a business trip. Started talking with him….great guy. He said they had fog on the ice that game and once in a while they had players off the bench to skate around and dissipate it. Before that center ice shot, the Hawks asked the refs to skate around and were refused. Tony didn’t pick up the shot from center until too late.

by husler777 on Mar 10, 2010 10:27 AM CST up reply actions

It was the fog game...

…the temp was in the 80’s that day and the Stadium AC was far to inadequate to handle the situation.

From all the interviews I have heard about Lemaire’s shot, most guys don’t blame the fog, they say Tony just missed it.

Esposito’s achille’s heel was always the long shot throughout his career. He wore contacts, so you know that had to have something to do with his ability to pick up shots from a distance.

"Antti started before the Olympic [break] and he got a little bit of the last game [against Detroit]," Quenneville said. "This gives him a chance to get back in the net. We’ll see how he responds."

"It’s important that somebody establishes himself and takes charge. I think both guys can play. We’re not blaming [Huet] for last game; I just think Antti gets a chance to grab the net," said Quenneville. "We’ve got back-to-back games this weekend and a lot of tough opponents as well as a condensed schedule. They’ll both see some time here and we’re looking for both of them to take charge."

You think these guys are already just making time...

…waiting for the playoffs to start? I certainly hope not. It’s one of the reasons why running away with a division or conference championship can lead to problems. You can’t ratchet up intensity with a wave of a hand, when the playoffs begin.

Q and the Hawks have to find something to play for – I like the idea of not playing for the President’s Cup – kiss of death there. Really appears as though the intensity has dropped off a bit, especially when playing lesser teams (Islanders as an example). Limping into the playoffs is no way to get into post-season play…er, well, you know what I mean.

Maybe when Burish starts playing the intensity will pick up. In the meantime, Huet or Niemi, whenever you guys think it might be time to start picking it up, we’d certainly appreciate it. And when it does happen I would not be surprised to see the confidence and intensity from rest of the team pick up.

About that something to play for

I agree to the sense you sometimes find that when you run away w/ the division that it’s tough to get motivated (see SJ). However…I think if you need to find something like the presidents cup to get yourself motivated then do it. I dont really care as long as we can turn it up a notch or 2.

The Hawks are a very talented team and sometimes being spoiled by that knowing how good they can play when they have a rough month or so can really feel like a kick in the ass!

Did any of you happen to see the Vancouver game on Friday night? Maybe it was just me, but I thought that the 1st period had as much energy as I’ve seen from the Hawks and the fans as I’ve seen all year. Minus the 6-5 comeback win against Calgary. I do agree that there are stretches where they do not have as much jump as others, but so it goes. Every team in the NHL goes through the same thing. This team has proved to me that when it’s time to answer the bell, it will. Have faith. I realize that we don’t have Patrick Roy and Dominik Hasek in net, but most teams don’t. Saddle up and support whoever it is that will be in net come April.

I guess i am

in the minority group wiht my thinking but,i still dont get why people want Q to pull the trigger on a number 1 goalie right now….Imo its up to the goalies to win it…if Niemi shows he can be stable ,give it to him,if Huet shows he has the confidence, give it to him…there are 17 games left, imo that is enough time for them to figure it out….if 7 or 8 more games go by,and there is still no clear cut no.1 goalie, then i expect Q to pick the no.1,as i believe 7 straight games at the end of the season will be enough for a goalie to get used to playing consistently

by csm on Mar 9, 2010 2:51 PM CST reply actions

I think what a lot of us are thinking

Is that we need to pick our no. 1 now, so that he can a lot of consistent playing time and get into a rhythm. With that rhythm, hopefully comes more and more confidence. Up until now, I think Q’s plan of switching back and forth was sound; with the idea that one of the other would grab the no. 1 spot. Obviously neither Huet or Niemi grabbed no. 1, so IMO I think its time to pick one (flip a coin, I don’t really care) and go with him, so he has that rhythm and confidence by the time the playoffs start.

by K_Dog on Mar 9, 2010 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

I get what u

r saying….i figured that by now we would know who our goalie is….i figured one of the two would pick up their play and start running away with the no.1….imo i there is still enough time for one of the goalies to get in a groove and gain some confidence…when there are 8-9 games left in the season and their is no clear cut no.1 i want Q to flip a cion pull a name outta a hat have them two draw straws, whatever!!just to pick one and give him the 8-9 games to get into a rhythm

by csm on Mar 9, 2010 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

okay so we're pretty much in agreement

The only difference is how long we think it takes a goalie to find his groove. If it takes 9 games to find a rhythm, cool, then I’m all for tinkering around for a few more games. I just don’t know what the right number is; and I suppose it is different for each individual goalie.

by K_Dog on Mar 9, 2010 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

Agree w/ CSM

Thing is, what a lot of people seem to give up on Niemi about is his lack of experience. That is EXACTLY why I think he needs to get a string of starts with a little slower hook. Huet has experience and unfortunately I think we’ve already seen his upside. I hope like hell he’s playing way below his capabilities and comes through if needed in playoff time, but I ain’t calling Vegas and betting on that happening. To paraphrase Dennis Green, he is what he has shown all season he is…occasional streaks of very good…mostly inconsistent…. and at times pretty damn bad. Why anyone would expect the unexpected from him to change all of a sudden into a consistently above average goalie I don’t know. Niemi has also had his good and bad moments, but he IS inexperienced. Give him the experience and chance to go more than a few games w/o a quick hook and see if he grows and rises to the challenge or not. I doubt giving Huet a 10 game string of starts has the same upside, given he’s already a veteran, that giving 10 to Niemi will do. And if Niemi falters…..yeah well give the nod to Huet last 7 games and playoffs and hope like hell the D turns the calendar back to January. With Huet’s experience, 7 games ought to be enough to get where he can get to. Not sure I’d say 7 at end of year is enough for Niemi. But if Niemi takes the reins during that 10 games and keeps playing well the rest of the season….. well maybe I WILL call Vegas and wager on the Hawks winning the cup this year.

by husler777 on Mar 9, 2010 3:21 PM CST up reply actions

Experience

I totally agree. Everyone keeps saying that Niemi doesn’t have the experience. How can you get the experience if you are not allowed to play?

Yes but

Niemi is a rook, Huet is a vet. Huet can get into a rhythm at the very tail end of the regular season if Niemi completely bombs. For now, Q is and needs to be focused on finding out what exactly we have in Niemi. The more starts for Niemi, the better.

Imagine putting yourself in Huet’s shoes (I know it’s corny). He knows he has a well above average team, fighting for the cup this year, not next. He also knows he is the weak link in the chain. Anyone who could tell themselves otherwise should be in an asylum. I think Q wants Huet to realize he has to saddle up.

If Niemi flies then we ride him. If Niemi dives all we got is Huet. I think Q is trying to play into Huet’s psyche more than we give him credit for, like, now is your chance buddy, we got no one else riding the pine back here better than you.

Worst case scenario we ride Huet all the way into the playoffs and he has major meltdown after meltdown, we got this untested, inexperienced, nervous as hell novice.

…there have been plenty of rookie goaltenders that have played well in the playoffs. Sometimes when you don’t know any better, it can be an advantage – don’t think, just react.

What we don’t know is Niemi’s ceiling, but we have a good indication what Huet’s is. The next thing you worry about is their floor, and I’d bet it’s not worse than Huet’s.

…was the year the Martin, Pappin and Hull line really kicked ass.

The Hawks regular season record dipped a bit from previous years, but they surprised folks by getting back to the finals, and taking a superior Canadien team to 6 games.

Pit Martin was my favorite player from then

I recall writing a fan letter to him (I was about 14), and he sent a very nice (and surprisingly long) letter in reply – with an autographed picture. He was a truely classy guy.

Without him, Pappin and Hull were frequently next to useless on the ice.

Dennis

was pretty much riding his big brother’s coat tails… Not entirely without talent, but you’re right, Martin definitely raised his level. I’ve mentioned it before, but #9 was my hero back then and for some reason I was also a big Bill White fan. I wore #2 throughout most of my playing days.

by Badgerdano on Mar 10, 2010 10:06 AM CST up reply actions

I used to occasionally skate with several Hawks during the summer (mid-70s)

Bill White was a very classy guy, and a good role model. He was very gracious with us young guys that shared the ice with them.

He was a very long time minor leaguer (played for the infamous Eddie Shore out east in Springfield) who became an NHL all-star.

Gunzo's

My friends and I used to hang out in Gunzo’s all the time to drool over the best equipment and in hopes of getting some autographs. We would periodically run into a Hawk player there and at one time I had several autographs including Bill White’s. I wonder what became of that stuff… I have my 1971 Blackhawks hockey cards framed, none autographed. Wow, I’m really sounding like a geezer now. LOL

by Badgerdano on Mar 10, 2010 10:48 AM CST up reply actions

from skating with them

my favorites were Jon Marks, Pit Martin, Bill White< Stan Mikita and Pat Stapleton. I didn’t particularly care for Eric Nesterenko (and he had been one of my favorites before that).

Marks used to sit on the bench between shifts and really get into teaching us – it was no surprise to me to see him have some good success later as a minor league coach.

Which rink was that?

My “home” rink was Ridgeland Commons in Oak Park. Back then it was not fully enclosed where the roof met the walls and we’d have the occasional blizzard blowing snow onto the ice. More than once I lost the puck in snow, almost like playing outside. In the spring we’d also have soft ice and of course there was no ice in the summer. We also skated a lot at Twin Ice (in Hinsdale maybe) which I think went out of business years ago.

by Badgerdano on Mar 10, 2010 11:04 AM CST up reply actions

Stapleton was (I don't think he still is) part of the Downers Gr. & Carol Stream ownership

Along with several Ontario rinks. I played Midget level travel hockey at Downers Grove.

When I played in high school...

…the Downers Grove rink was our practice facility for one year. If I’m not mistaken, the dimensions were exactly the same as the old Chicago Stadium – 188 X 85.

The next year we practiced at the Willow Ice Chalet which was previously owned by Dennis Hull and and I think Cliff Korrol.

Carol Stream

We used to rent the ice there on Sunday mornings up until a few years ago. BAD ice… thin. You want to talk about no-frills? You ever play at the old Polar Dome in Dundee? The locker rooms were freezing and they used nails pounded in a plank on the wall for hooks.

I think Martin...

…was a very underated player for many years – great speed and he had good vision on the ice. Pappin was had incredibly good hands and was deadly around the net (he scored an incredible goal in the 71 finals by stick handling through several guys).

Dennis Hull needed to be set up so he could capitalize on his shot, and that is what he had with Mikita and than Martin after that. In the 80’s, Dennis Hull used to come in my families restaurant once a week for pizza like clock work. He was and is an incredibly funny guy.

Q's mind games

don’t seem to be working. Huet played best when he was the guy earlier in the year. When he struggled, Q started using Niemi more. Huet sees less consistent playing time and the struggles don’t end. He looks like he did last year when he and Khabby alternated. He wasn’t comfortable then, but he was when Khabby was injured in Nov/Dec or whatever it was.

by Katherine215 on Mar 9, 2010 5:29 PM CST up reply actions

Disagree

Last year from what I remember Huet was very good alternating with Khabby. But when Khabby got injured and Huet HAD to carry the whole load, that’s when he fell apart after 6 or 7 games.

Mind games or not, I believe we have seen Huet’s ceiling….and so has the rest of the league. I believe that Bowman DID try and trade him (and not cause of that utterly ridiculous ego reason some have put forth). Frankly, I don’t think anyone wanted him.

What makes most sense?

Case 1

a) Q is not a good coach and can’t fairly evaluate goalie talent in front of him
b) The Hawk’s management team would prefer going with a rookie goalie in games and playoffs.
c) Huet has been really good….except when the D was bad or when he faced less than normal amounts of shots and let softies in as a result. But then so would every other goalie in that situation.
d) Many teams wanted to trade for Huet and offered great players in trade….but the Hawks management team thought he was too good to let go and didn’t want to ruin the team chemistry Huet’s presence provides….only to start Niemi now.
e) Most hockey media downgrade the Hawks on goal tending and therefore are not knowledgeable sources.
f) If Q and Bowman (young B and old B both) knew how to evaluate hockey talent, they would just put Huet in and be comfortable that after a few games w/o the pressure of the hook, he would be a very good goalie. But they are not competent enough to do that .

OR

Case 2
Huet is just not very good.

Maybe I’m a minority, but I would choose Case 2 as more probable myself and as a result give Niemi the chance to show he has what it takes. If he can’t….well…then I hope I am really really wrong about Huet.

In either case I hope along with most of us one or the other steps up and leads us through the finals.

I think you are generalizing

in both your cases. I don’t have time to look up the specifics of the winning streak the team went on last year while Khabby was out (I iwll later if I have time and still care), but I’m remembering it differently. The truth likely falls somewhere in the middle of what we’re both remembering.

Anyway, I still think Huet has played better when he’s getting consistent starts.

by Katherine215 on Mar 10, 2010 9:38 AM CST up reply actions

Let me know

Yes, please check. What I am going by memory from is that when they rotated there was no clear “best” goalie. Both played pretty well. Then when Khabby went down, Huet played pretty well for like 5 or 6 games. Then pfffftttttt. I believe Crawford even got a few games in as a result. But if you check, let me know.

by husler777 on Mar 10, 2010 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

Looking at the 9 game winning streak I was thinking of,

Huet won 5, Khabby 4 so that must not be the right time because Khabby wasn’t injured (neither played more than 2 consecutively during the streak).

Without knowing the dates Khabby was out (I can’t find where they’re spelled out), it’s hard to say when we were thinking of. Khabby was out for the first half of that hideous March, maybe that is when you’re thinking of. I must’ve been thinking of a stretch in Feb where Huet won 4 in a row.

I don’t know. At this point, I just want them to win and be done with this goalie crap.

by Katherine215 on Mar 10, 2010 1:13 PM CST up reply actions

actually, Khabibulin went down end of February

From Feb 13-27, Huet took rein, until he was pulled from the Feb 27 game against the Pens and we saw Antti Niemi for the first time. (This was the double hard hat trick night, thanks to Captain Serious.)

We went 4-3-1 in those 8 games, which included 2 back-to-backs. From Feb 14 on, though, we were also missing Patrick Sharp.

Anyway, Huet’s GAA was 2.25, SV% .910 during that time span, I believe. First 5 games, he had a 1.4 GAA and .944 SV%. Last 2.66 games (he was pulled after 2 periods) he had a 3.66 GAA and 0.853 SV%.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

anytime :)

Huet’s 08-09 game log can be found here and I just compared the dates to the schedule last year to figure out where he played consecutive games. Then I clicked on the recaps for each game—they list the goaltenders for the teams.

I don’t remember that, if it happened.

After Feb 11th game he went down

I guess I still have a ways before serious memory loss strikes.

Huets games from Dec 7 to Feb 7 while he was alternating resulted in 25 GA in 14 games….1.785 GAA. Take away New Years Hangover game……19 goals in 13 games for a great 1.461 GAA. Very good goaltending, when alternating.

Then when he was THE man, his 1st 6 games he gave up 1,2,3,0 1,2 goals for a 1.5 average, so he was still very good.

However, when forced to continue the full workload, his next 8 games he gave up 5,4,2,4,2,4,4,4…29 goals in 8 games or 3.62. Didn’t do very well as THE guy then.

On the Hawks if you look at the Islanders game and the 2nd period against Detroit then the sky is falling. If you look at the Vancouver game and the 1st &3rd periods against Detroit then the Hawks are the best team in hockey. I wouldn’t put too much stock in either point of view.

I think Coach Q

started the competition for playoff goalie when he gave Niemi the back to back starts against Calgary and Vancouver during the long road trip in January. Once they returned home after this trip, he has changed the goalies after a loss. (With the exception of the 2-1 SO loss to Phoenix) I am fine with that. However, what I find alarming about the other 3 losses during this time is that the Hawks have been outscored 12-0 in the second period. (St. Louis 3-0 / Islanders 4-0 / Scum 5-0) I don’t see how this problem can be blamed directly on the goalies.

I think...

we might get a mixture of both! I know Niemi is 25 but if he can get back or Huet can get that confidence back we are in for a surprise. It worries me with the fans in the playoffs. Can they stick behind Huet if he allows 1 or 2 goals in the playoffs? Can either of our goalies make a mistake without 22 thousand fans yelling at them! I think come that time if we can get out of that first round then anything can happen. With expectations so high I hope we can live up. I know this is still a young team that can flip the “switch” on at any moment, they just have to want it!

Huet we know what he brings and we have seen this confidence in him. Niemi we have seen but truly we don’t know what we have. I think you have 2 average goalies which is fine but who can take that #1 spot will be determined soon. I’m all for supporting either goalie b/c it’s all about that ONE GOAL !

I’m wondering how much of the goalie decision is coming from Q. My guess is that this and all healthy scratches are a brain trust decision of Q and Big & Little Bowman. Heck, McD might even be in on it.

And this may also be in part to wake up the team defense and get them playing well again. Put the rookie in goal and everyone has to raise their game a bit more.

You know, I thought that was the case earlier in the season and part of the reason why Niemi started out so well. I think now the team has pretty much said fuck it, we’re playing the same no matter who’s in goal now, which might be part of the reason why Niemi’s play has started to level out

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

the headline writer totally fucked up the line

it’s “tenterhooks” not “tenderhooks”.

It is bad when the editorial staff at the newspaper are illiterate.

one time, the phrase on tenterhooks would have evoked an image that was immediately understandable.

It comes from one of the processes of making woollen cloth. After it had been woven, the cloth still contained oil from the fleece, mixed with dirt. It was cleaned in a fulling mill, but then it had to be dried carefully or it would shrink and crease. So the lengths of wet cloth were stretched on wooden frames, and left out in the open for some time. This allowed them to dry and straightened their weave. These frames were the tenters, and the tenter hooks were the metal hooks used to fix the cloth to the frame. At one time, it would have been common in manufacturing areas to see fields full of these frames (older English maps sometimes marked an area as a tenter-field). So it was not a huge leap of the imagination to think of somebody on tenterhooks as being in an state of anxious suspense, stretched like the cloth on the tenter. The tenters have gone, but the meaning has survived.

Tenter comes from the Latin tendere, to stretch, via a French intermediate. The word has been in the language since the fourteenth century, and on tenters soon after became a phrase meaning painful anxiety. The exact phrase on tenterhooks seems first to have been used by Tobias Smollett in Roderick Random in 1748.

For anyone saying stuff about Crawford:

I went to the Icehogs game here in San Antonio on Sunday. Crawford looked horrendous, and let in 4 or 5 goals before the 2nd was over. (forget when he got pulled)
Game was almost the same as the Hawks game too. Icehogs scored 2 quick in the first, Rampage scored 5 unanswered to make it 5-2 after two. Third period though, Rampage added 2 more for a 7-2 final.
Sunday was a bad day for Chicago hockey…

Hawks Goalie Debacle

Sunday’s Hawks/Wings play by play announcer said it best. Huet is playing way to tentative. If I may add, not only is he playing tentative but is often unprepared. Latest example is the Friday nite Kessler goal. Huet was daydreaming for a moment and was moving into position as the shot was on its way. The shot surprised me too as Kessler had the D right in his face but I dont get paid $5.6M per year to be prepared. Bottom line is Huet gives up too many SOFT goals. That is his downfall.

The truth is, Niemi is fundamentally sound between the pipes. He is by far the best choice today and in the playoffs. His potential is high. His lack of experience is a weakness that we cannot correct. The next best thing however, would be to play him as much as possible til the regular season concludes. Then we need to play him in the playoffs also.

Huet will never amount to anything more than a backup.

I tend to agree...

…Huet clearly has stretches were his concentration is lacking. You see it in goals like Kessler scored and also in the poor angles he takes on shots.

I’m not so sure this simply won’t be a drill on figuring out the risks of playing each guy and making a call. Chances are Niemi has a higher ceiling than Huet and probably is no worse on the downside.

I’m betting it will be Niemi’s net come playoff time.

I guess when someone states

The truth is Niemi is fundamentally sound” I know at that point nothing I say to try and educate them will change their opinion. It’s basically thinly veiled Huet hate. The book on Niemi is that he is an athletic goalie, definitely not fundamentally sound. Maybe it is partly due to youth, but he gets caught out of position quite often and his athleticism gets him out of trouble most of the time. Quite the opposite of what was stated.

Fundamentals

I tend to agree Niemi’s strength right now are his reflexes and leg speed. He could improve some of his fundamentals for sure…..but that’s where I hope he can have 10-12 more games of experience before the playoffs. If he gets a little better at some angles and positioning, with his athleticism, he might wind up being very good. I AM starting to wonder about that shot just above his gloved hand though…..

Huet seems to falter on fundamentals. Start of the year he was a swimmer, diving down on the ice as soon as it looked like someone might possibly think of shooting (remember the goal scored while he was swimming in the face off circle?). He also seemed to be averse to standing next to the goal post and let quite a few in between the post and him (hard to forget that one bouncing off the glass/boards and hopping in). Then he seemed to “get it” finally and I thought Waite really did a great coaching job. I think his best games were when he didn’t flop immediately and played his position well. But lately he seems to have regressed to the flop and goal post aversion style again. When he does THAT, I’m not sure his fundamentals are better than Niemi’s.

by husler777 on Mar 10, 2010 2:38 PM CST reply actions

So what you're still basically saying

is that Niemi is the better shootout goalie and Huet sucks, right? (oh you thought I forgot about you!)

On a serious note, I’m assuming this was possibly a reply fail to my post above? If so, my point was solely about Niemi’s fundamentals, not as compared to Huet. I do disagree though that Huet’s fundamentals- even when at his best – are worse than Niemi’s. That statement makes my head asplode. But ultimately it’s our own opinions.

It just seems you want to reduced Huet to an orange traffic cone to support your argument. He’s a swimmer, he’s a flopper, he has post aversion, he’s fundamentally unsound and use two very bad examples to support this. Yes, he’s having a bad season in terms of SV% and he does look very bad at times, but throughout his career he has been what I will call a slightly above average goalie and there is a reason for that – he has above orange-cone-level skills.

So the alternative is Niemi. He’s been playing hockey since his childhood. I know he played in the juniors from 2000-05 and in the pros in Finland for 3 yrs before coming to the Hawks almost 2 yrs ago. After at least 10 yrs of organized hockey at the goalie position, I just don’t see, after all that time, how 10-12 games is suddenly going to convert him into a superstud. Hopefully someone will emerge though.

Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Mar 10, 2010 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

basically saying....

Yeah I think Niemi is the better shootout goalie and Huet sucks?…depends what context. As an NHL backup up goalie I think he’s pretty good. As a starter……..well if we put all the starting NHL goalies names in a hat and started over by drawing names out of the hat, yeah I’d be very very happy to put Huet in the hat and I’d be damn disappointed if I drew his name out for my team. Hard to think of 5 starting goalies I’d walk away from in a straight up trade for Huet. Does that mean he sucks? Don’t care. Let’s just say I don’t think he is or will ever be in the top 50%; i.e. above average. Doubt he makes top 25, but that’s opinion

Why bad examples? Both examples are when he was out of position and let goals in. And yeah, he drops to his knees faster than a French hooker in a Paris alleyway when he’s not on.

Niemi…played pretty darn good tonight (just came home from the LA game). That’s one out of hopefully 10. Yeah he played juniors and Finland. Is your point that experience in juniors and Finland match the learning that happens in NHL games? Talk about head asploding statements. Take that argument and put it on Huet. He’s PLAYED in the NHL and what has he learned? Is 10 games going to make HIM better? I say 10 games will do a lot more to improve Niemi than it will do to improve Huet. I’ve seen Huet’s ceiling. You think you’ve seen Niemi’s? I hope I haven’t. And if Niemi DOESN’T come thru, then yeah…put in Huet, cross your fingers and hope he rises to the occasion. But when and if that happens, IMO we got ourselves 2 very mediocre goalies. Can we win with them? Boy I sure hope so!

Extremely happy to have Burish back. If last year’s second round is any indication, he can elevate the energy of this team in obvious as well as mysterious ways.
