Hawks Blog 1st Round Table
We'll get our full playoff preview loaded up this afternoon, but we'll start with our 1st round roundtable done with The Fifth Feather, Chris Block from The Third Man In, and Jeff Bartl from Blackhawk Up.
Is there anything that scares you about the Preds?
Feather: Let's see. They have horrific special teams, their list of top-6 forwards inspires no one, and their head coach looks like a villian from Super Mario Brothers. So yes. In all seriousness, Pekka Rinne is one thing to fear and so is Lord Erat. Playing in a 7-game series against the Blackhawks, Erat will probably end up leading the NHL in scoring after the first round. Let's hope none of his teammates follow his lead.
Block: Not many teams outwork the Hawks, but a Barry Trotz-led team will try, and some nights, succeed. The core of this Predators group has been together for awhile now and nine of them were on the team that gave Detroit a brief scare as the 8th seed two playoffs ago.
Above all else, Nashville comes in seeing the Blackhawks as more of a rival than the other way around and thus owns the proverbial chip on the shoulder. I don’t think they ever believed they’d beat the Wings in ’08 or ‘04, and their two quick first round exits to San Jose were lesser groups. Nashville thinks they can beat the Hawks. That alone, coupled with the fact they come in with a red-hot goalie creates a dangerous scenario for Joel Quenneville and company. Hornqvist, Arnott, Suter and Weber will steer the attack and they should get enough scoring from the likes of Dumont, Erat, Sullivan and rookie Colin Wilson (who, in the not too distant future, will be a headliner in Music City) to keep them in every game. Joel Ward, Dustin Boyd, and of course Jordin Tootoo will be everywhere. If the Hawks get to Pekka Rinne (4 shutouts and a .940 save% the last month of the season), backup Dan Ellis was stellar in the series with Detroit in ‘08, and that counts for something. But the X-factors are Legwand up the middle and Hamhuis on the blue line. Those two will either finish the series a +5 or a Minus-9. They are that up and down. Barry Trotz needs this pair to bring their best defensive games if they have any hope of stymieing the vaunted Hawks’ offense enough to facilitate the upset.
Bartl: I'm deathly afraid they're going to put me to sleep. Seriously though, the Predators don't give anyone reason to begin shaking over what they bring to the table -- and I think that's what worries me. Nashville's power play ranked 24th in the league, and its penalty kill ranked 28th. Roughly 18,000 fans sitting in their seat at the UC for Game 1 won't be able to name two forwards, and I'll be shocked if half as many of those people know who the Preds have in goal. Yet somehow Nashville finished with 100 points and beat the 'Hawks twice this season. Basically, I'm scared that I'm not scared.
Which player should Hawks fans most watch out for on Nashville?
Feather: Obviously the aforementioned Erat and Rinne, but the most interesting matchup will be what Barry Trotz does with Shea Weber. In the past, Trotz has used Weber almost exclusively on Patrick Kane. With the Hawks now throwing out a hellacious line of Sharp-Toews-Hossa, Trotz will be forced to pick his poison. Or he can just play Weber for 45 minutes a game, that would also work.
Block: Steve Sullivan. Don’t discount how much this former Hawk means to this Preds’ squad and franchise. An emotional leader, Sullivan shared the team lead in scoring with Patric Hornqvist and will see a lot of power play time. A truly amazing story he’s written himself now; missing two full years of hockey, undergoing two back surgeries and to not miss a game this season. He’s jacked for this series and I look for him to get on the board early and often. He’s never been much of a playoff performer, but also hasn’t been as healthy or motivated as he is now.
Bartl: I instinctively thought Martin Erat because he plays like a Hall of Famer against the 'Hawks, but I'm going with Pekka Rinne. He's heading into the playoffs on a hot streak, which is dangerous in a seven-game series. The Blackhawks need to not only put a high number of shots on Rinne in the series, but make those shots quality opportunities and make him work for his saves.
On the Hawks side, we asked this at Second City Hockey, but who's your John Druce (unlikely playoff hero)
Feather: If the past three weeks are any indication than Tomas Kopecky may have a wing in Toronto dedicated to him by the time it's all said and done.
Block: Can a goalie portray the John Druce character? Because I do not believe we have seen the last of Cristobal Huet. Aside from Colin Fraser, Ben Eager or the aforementioned Kopecky, there really isn’t a guy on this team who truly embodies the Druce suit and outside of a whole scoring line getting blind-sided by the Tootoo-Train, they won’t see enough ice to make that kind of a difference.
For this round, I expect John Madden to get his act together, finally, and make an impact for the first time since he commandeered the festivities in the limousine on a sultry January Vancouver night. He’ll chip in a few goals and he and Toews will own the Preds at the face off dots. Over the long-haul though, I’m going to say Brent Seabrook quits weeping over what his old buddy Wiz did to him back in Anaheim and gets back to tossing opposing forwards around in the corners, jump-starting offensive rushes and scoring huge goals late for the Hawks. When this playoff is over, I suspect Seabrook will have 3-4 GWG’s and be getting most of the praise on the backline, not the over-priced Keith.
Bartl: Andrew Ladd has four points in his last five games and his solid but not flashy play often goes overlooked. I'm taking Ladd to be a key cog in the 'Hawks playoff run.
Prediction for Round 1:
Feather: It should probably only last 5 games but Nashville always finds ways to make things interesting when they qualify for the post-season. We'll say Hawks in 7 and pray for something quicker.
Block: Nashville will grab an early lead in the series and while the Hawks will say all the right things, the scare will get them back on track and I expect the Preds will quickly be packing for summer cottage. Blackhawks in six. Not a game less. Not one more.
Bartl: The Blackhawks win in six games, and I stay awake for the ENTIRE series.
Our answers are on their blogs, but you'll be hearing lots of what we have to say in the coming days.

This has been bugging me forever.
I knew Trotz reminded me of some character I had seen in a movie but I just couldn’t place it. Then the other night I stumbled across the movie ‘Alien Nation’ (1988) late at night. And lo and behold there was Barry Trotz, right up there on the big screen. (He is definitely one odd looking fellow.)

Anyone have some advice on how to drive the alien leader and his minions away?

I am terrified
by the Preds. They are not underdogs in their minds. They don’t think they can beat us; they know they can.
These could all be 2-1 games, and those can go anyone’s way. I’m not a Niemi basher, but Rinne is hands-down the better goaltender and playing very well of late. That alone is concern enough in a series where the Preds are going to slow down the pace enough to turn games into lullabies.
I think we’ll win, but Nashville has the stones to win 3 games I think..

Hawks in 5
I usually hate to say that any series could end this early but this might. It won’t be a blowout per say just that the ’Hawks have that offensive firepower to score in a tight game.
I expect the Hawks to outshoot the Predators in every game, but if Rinne stands on his head and Niemi falters then watch out the ‘Hawks are in trouble in this series. But I don’t see the latter happening and the ’Hawks find a way to win both at home, split in Honky-Tonk town and then close it out at home. All 5 games decided by 2 goals or less with one going into OT.
Just a guess that’s all.

Q wouldn’t rule him out for the latter part of the series – though, I would be very surprised.
Third or maybe second round is probably most likely.
"...the internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a truck. It's a series of tubes." - Sen. Ted Stevens
full practice, according to ESPN
Q also hopeful we’ll get him back sometime in the first round, so I wouldn’t say we’re a long way from getting him back.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

stop it right there
in the link it says:
“Q: There are reports that Soupy could be ready for the first round. Should us Hawks fans get excited? — Alex (Palatine, Ill.)
A: I think there’s cause for excitement because he’s begun skating. Everything else can’t be too far away. It helps that they are starting the series a couple days later than we all thought so that gives him extra time. I’d still say round two is more likely, but as this week moves along we will know a whole lot more.”
thus my comment about it being “skating” not “practicing” (not to mention “full contact practicing”)
Confusion will be my epitaph.

this one says practice
I doubt if he is skating “all out” yet, but at least the signs look promising.
I went to a fight the other night and a hockey game broke out.
- Rodney Dangerfield
I hope y'all are right and he's WAY ahead of schedule, but I don't want my hopes up too soon
even if he is doing some sort of light ‘practice’ (which isn’t out of the question from his original timeline for return), they can’t be nuts enough to risk setting him back further with any sort of full-fledged practice.
Has anyone described what he is doing? Skating with a little stickhandling – that would be right on schedule, I’d think. Any sort of vigorous shooting work or contact would be very risky at this point.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
here's the thing
I know initially when you hear a timetable that is 7-8 weeks and he talks like maybe he’s coming back in 5, it’s annoying because you fell like “why rush it? It’s the 1st round.” I’m no doctor, but the thing with a clavicle break, waiting 8 weeks might not be necessary. As long as he can move with the same range and pain-free, I think it matters less. Not to mention, the collarbone doesn’t matter if it’s been healing for a month or two or three. If it gets hit just so, it doesn’t matter if it’s never been broken or broken 5 times. I mean a collarbone can’t be any thicker than a novelty pencil. And the ribs? Pshaw. Kind of like a broken foot, right? As long as you can play through the pain, might as well not bring it up. So, even if Campbell is day-to-day for the whole series, just the idea that Trotz has to twitch over possibly changing an entire game plan in a day’s notice is well played. And who knows? he could play. Win-win if you ask me.
Trotz won’t change his gameplan with Campbell in. He sticks to his guns.

that would be his mistake, don’t you think? You’re not giving your own coach much credit for the job he does. To assume that Campbell = any dude, is not very smart. His matchups, and most certainly worrying about taking any bad penalty would have to be on his mind. Campbell is the defense’s best puck handler and makes the team’s PP really click — that much they found out since he’s been gone.
Trotz is a better coach than that
or else his team really is in a near hopeless state
Confusion will be my epitaph.
I should rephrase that. Trotz won’t alter our system because of one player, but he will change how he attacks you.

over priced keith?
i don’t know… he looks pretty darn good to me
I thought the same thing
and he won’t be ‘over priced’ until next year. I’m guessing Block is still hung up on Keith’s sub-par playoff performance last year, and he’s waiting for the regular season/Olympic Keith to show up for the playoffs, which I have no doubt that he will.
by EamusCatuli23 on Apr 14, 2010 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions
Keith was concussed last year am I right?
He is not overpriced either. He’s + 21 with 69 points, and TOI has to be 25+. He makes 1.475 this year
Contrast that with Weber +0 with 43 points. He makes 4.5 MIL this year
Overpiced?
Chewing gum?
Maybe my comment wasn't clear
I was agreeing with SLoop not Block. That’s why I put the word overpriced in quotations. I was just trying to think of a reason why Block thought Keith was overpriced. I actually think the Hawks got a great deal with Keith’s contract as he could have gotten a lot more money in a shorter deal.
by EamusCatuli23 on Apr 14, 2010 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions
I don’t think Keith is overpaid, but there’s no way in Hades Weber is, either. Weber’s a world class player and franchise defenseman, just like Keith. Don’t let that +0 fool you.

Weber got lots of minutes early, but at the end of the day, Keith was the TOI leader and #1 defenseman for the Gold medal team (food for thought- who was the team’s most important forward?)
Chris Block- shame on you! “over-priced Keith” are the two stupidest words I’ve read on this site all year. Last year, next year, any year.
Hossa, Kane, Sharp, Seebs, the Professor and Mary Anne, all great.
But 2 + 19 = Blackhawkjack.
Most of his points are on the PP.

Yes they are
That’s why I say if the Hawks take stupid penalties (Eager, Versteeg (Detroit last year) and the old Lazy Kane) they will have to deal with Weber where he is obviously at his best.
Chewing gum?
I wouldn't say underacheived
Weber’s made his case for what he can do and then some. and Kaner’s Revenge is right, having a great offense that tends to control the puck a lot will help any defenseman’s case….a lack thereof, not as helpful.

Yeah, WTF?
Are we that obsessed with using the “overpriced” label? With Huet and Campbell out for their own reasons, we’re now transferring the label over to Keith? Even next year he won’t be overpriced. I’ll take a $5.5mil cap hit on a Norris-caliber defensemen any day of the week.

I never said that the Pred’s life sapping, eye gouging, coma inducing style wasn’t effective. The Nucks change their style of play specifically for the Hawks, and it can be very effective.

clogging up the neutral zone - but apparently not "trapping"
NJ won some Cups trapping, people don’t hate it because it never works – but rather becuase it is boring to watch
Confusion will be my epitaph.
This is starting to remind me
of Marty Feldman in ‘Young Frankenstein’ when he went around saying “Blucher” to mess with the horses.
All we have to do is put up a one word post:
TRAP!
And the Pred fans will reply:
NO WE DON’T!

that area tends to get a little crazy, but there isn’t really a part of the city that stays sober. I live on the east side of the river so I’m about 2 block from downtown and the 80 or so establishments
IC is sadly turing 21 bar age this summer. somehow I don’t think that will limit tailgating…

i went to Mizzou, which is a 21 bar age town, and tailgating just got more crazy cuz less people could go to the bars instead.

Not gourmet or anything
but decent bar food, decent beer selection, good wings, and not very expensive.

Ottawa keeps up this shit and actually pulls off the series.
Jaro Halak stands on his head and the Habs miracle their asses past D.C.
Phoenix does its rise-from-the-ashes thing and bounces the Wings.
So, no PIT, no WSH, no DET.
Pierre McGuire would start to bleed from the ear — just a trickle. And then little bits of Pierre’s head go wallward. (Followed shortly thereafter by NBC exec headbits.)

NERD ALERT: apparently the actor in the new movie (Anton Yelchin)
is actually russian, and said the original Checkov accent was basically absurd. But since they thought people would get pissed by changing it, he made the accent a hybrid of real/stereotypical russian. Anyways, that’s what he said on the DVD special features.

there's a new article on nhl.com about young seabrook
one of the interesting quotes about Keith was this:
“When he’s not physical, he’s an average player. When he’s real physical, he can be an effective player.”
Sounds kind of like his older brother. Anyways, heres the link http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=525477

(170 g) * (3x10^8 m/s)^2 = 1.5x10^16 J
We're going to have to put a list of seat locations together
for the appropriate stalking of all SCH peeps at the game.
let's just meet up before/during the game
in a pre-designated drinking area.
but we have to get cupcakes before going in (unless the UC has a cupcake policy, like Wrigley)

then we won’t have to worry about parking & there’s a shuttle. and cheaper food, as rsncrntz mentioned earlier.

I didn't know precisely what you did - just that it somehow related to dead people
One of my degrees is in forensic sciences – I’ve known several people who work in morgues, or otherwise deal with forensic science type stuff.
At least with obits, your company’s dead people dealings don’t have anyone going home smelling of formaldehyde (or worse, putricine or cadaverine).
Confusion will be my epitaph.
