Remember When We Were Talking About Guts?: Hawks 1 - Devils 1 (Hawks Win Beer Pong 1-0)

102709-mean-gene_medium
Talk About Testicular Fortitude...

There's simply not enough Mean Gene Orkerlund on this site, and thankfully the Hawks provided fodder tonight for me to start to change that.  While it wasn't a perfect game by any measure, I think it's better than it might look from the stat sheet.  What it mostly showed was balls.  And balls can win you a lot over the next two months.  Keep that in mind.  The Hawks are also only the second team to grab any points when the Devils have the lead going into the 3rd.  Very encouraging.

As most of you know, my skills for predicting things wrong is unmatched.  Well, I got a couple things right tonight.  I feared Dustin Byfuglien out against some real top-line talent.  He went walkabout to leave Patrick Elias too many passing options.  I worried about Kovalchuk getting space.  He scored.  So there's one out of 487.

In fact, the Hawks were blown away in the 1st.  While the commentary and some of the thread would have you believe this was the Hawks being lethargic (and they were slightly), there's a reason the Devils are contending for the Atlantic crown.  They'd had problems starting games the past little while, and it was obviously something they'd addressed.  While we're not accustomed to seeing teams put the Hawks on the backfoot, the Devils can for stretches, and did for the first 10 minutes.  But the Hawks continued to win draws, limiting Jersey possession, and slowly worked themselves back into it.  They has some Niemi saves to thank, and he proved that when under the kosh he can keep his team in it.  This after locking down a slender lead in Minnesota.  All good signs.

The 2nd was the reverse.  I thought the Devils D might struggle with a furious forecheck, and they did with turnovers and losing battles for the entirety.  But what they do do well is limit chances and keep the front of the net clear.  So while the Hawks managed some real quality chances, they were one and done.  Still, after watching the second, I never doubted the Hawks would score.  Really, I didn't.  Honest.

The 3rd was more balanced, with chances going either way (by the way, whoever runs the shot board in Newark is certainly "liberal" with what constitutes a Devils' shot).  The Hawks defensive game was much better the second two periods, and I think the Devils only had a couple real good chances.  But the same could be said of the Devils, who really limited anything the Hawks could do, even with Coach Q going to the lineup-skidoo again.  Still, I'm sure I wasn't the only one who knew the Hawks would score.  Honest.  No lies, and I kept my hands to myself.

Finally, in the last minute, in a scramble reminiscent of a young kids soccer game, the puck squirted to Kris Versteeg who blasted a roller on net that found its way through Fatso.  Captain Marvel was in front making life difficult, but the Hawks certainly deserved an equalizer.

The OT was actually a little hairier than I thought it would be, with the Devils having the best chances.  But Niemi easily saw off anything in front of him, and Toews was the only one to pot in the Stupid-Frame.  Are we back yet?  Getting close at least...

Observations
-You saw the best and worst of Versteeg tonight.  A little too often he tried to navigate the razor-wired minefield that is the neutral zone against New Jersey.  But he never stopped trying, created more than enough, and was rewarded.

-Bolland's line did not have a good 1st period, in fact they got their skulls dick-slapped.  But their play over the next two was far better, and I've decided to be encouraged.  Brouwer was very active.

-Kane also had some real jump tonight, that slump probably ends Sunday against a Flames team he torches.

-Is Buff in front of then net more now than he was when he played forward?

-I've got one leg on the Anti-Goal bandwagon.

-So, 2 of 3 on this trip is all we would have asked for to begin with, although this probably isn't the way we pictured it.  The Sharks did their best to blow one in St. Paul tonight, but didn't . If you want the #1 seed Hawks, you probably have to win out.  With efforts like this, that's certainly doable.

Player Of The Game

Antti-Goal Antti-goal_medium

He kept the Hawks in it in the 1st, and stonewalled all Devils shooters to get us the extra point.

are you lurking, CNS?

you haven’t been your usual visible self tonight.

Was working

I had a couple of applications to get done for clients who are going on vacation Monday. I told one guy to call me anytime before 10pm. He f’ing called me with one minute left in the game! And I was reviewing documents with him, so I had to keep my eyes on the computer, not the TV. Sucks…

Plus, I tried to jump in the GDT after the 2nd period, but they never put up a 3rd period GDT and there were too many comments to catch up. I’d figured I’d actually watch the game. What a concept eh??

Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

those GDTs are during games?

first off, no wonder i haven’t seen any Hawks games this season. second, whose bright idea was that?

Wow, that sucks

your client is a rude dipshit. I hope you could pause the game, that’s the best part of DVRs.

Also, I think Sam didn’t think we had it in us to make it to 900 posts. He was rather condescending about our sad 200 posts after the first. We showed him…

by Katherine215 on Apr 2, 2010 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I did pause the DVR, but was watching in HD

I can pause it for 1-1/2 normally, but only 20 minutes in HD. I was on the phone for an hour. So I got to watch the whole boring game – except the only part I would’ve cared about. Oh well. Replays…

No penalties tonight for either team. I can’t remember THAT happening in forever. Benefit: 1st game the PP wasn’t clown shoes!

Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

No penalties

I know! My friend and his friend were saying how fast the game was going by… so I promised them OT to make it worth it. And worth it, it was!

I also had to get the requisite clown shoes comment in, and note that I was in fact not in favor of a Hawks PP.

It's been almost 9 years to the day

in the whole NHL. Someone also said Devorski was one of the refs – I don’t think he’s every going to call a Hawk penalty again.

PS.

Remember when I told you about the clip with Sharp and his baseball bat?

CNS gave me the site of a free .gif maker but it only allowed 10 frames, so I went ahead and cut the clip and uploaded it on YouTube over here.

Go figure—taking a clip off a DVD is easy enough, but making GIFs? Another story altogether. Dunno why the sound disappeared, or even why I titled it “Sharp and his stick” when he was holding a baseball bat, but whatever. I’m not on YouTube to get an Oscar for film editing.

More team play = more jump.

I thought a number of hawks played their best game in quite a while – and best of all, they played with team confidence.

I thought the same as well – keep working and they’ll score, which they did. Cheeky fucks.

Ottawa was okay

I didn’t get to explore it much, and I hate that it’s out in Kanata, but not bad. Prudential Center is quite a bit more flashy. It looks awesome from the outside, and there’s a lot to see on the inside too. Too bad they can’t get anyone to go out to games because it’s in fucking Newark.

Actually, the XCel Energy Center (I was there Wednesday) was pretty awesome as well. Atmosphere not great, I think because the team was playing badly, but the building is great, and the location is great too. AND THERE IS ONE HOMEMADE DONUT STAND IN THE 200 LEVELS THAT JUST BLEW MY MIND. I love donuts.

One thing both XCel and Prudential have in common — they decorate the concourse with the state’s high school hockey jerseys. Very nice touch.

I'm definitely an arena/stadium buff

across all sports. Grew up in the Oakland Coliseum, went on a futbol stadium tour of Spain when I was studying abroad, and this season was the year of the hockey road game for me. I’ve never known a venue quite like the UC, though — the anthem has a lot to do with it, but also how loud the building gets even before the game starts. It’s pretty incredible. I think only Anfield, in Liverpool, gives me chills the same way the UC does.

Yeah, not that I see the relevance...

…here comes the “argument from authority.”

Tell me I shouldn’t opine on quasars, and I’ll nod vigorously. But soccer?

I’ll sit quietly now while you patiently explain to me the crucial importance of arms in soccer, which of course can only be appreciated by the initiates because, contrary to appearances, soccer is actually harder to fathom than physics.

by cliffkoroll on Apr 3, 2010 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

i wasn't going to say anything like that

how you came up with a “soccer is more confusing than physics” is beyond me. the only sport on earth more confusing than physics is cricket, and i use the term sport loosely.

i really don’t understand why people attack soccer. often, they come off sounding ignorant, much like that tribune writer who wrote about hockey being a simple game earlier this season. to that end, my question was just one of curiosity: i wanted to know if you’d ever played soccer.

(170 g) * (3x10^8 m/s)^2 = 1.5x10^16 J

by meeshak on Apr 3, 2010 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Honestly, I haven't played much...

…but I realize, unlike many critics, that my lack of interest in the game has almost everything to do with an accident of birth rather than the merits of the game (all my cousins in Ireland and England are fanatics.)

Rummaging around inside myself, I’ve come across three thngs stuck in my craw that may explain my petulance:

1. You elevate “elite” hockey and soccer above other sports. I presume this is beacuse they are “world” sports (correct me if I’m wrong in this presumption.)

Well, America doesn’t really participate in soccer, and, judging, by things like the Olympics, that takes a chunk of the athletic “world” out of the soccer equation.

Also, what about hoops? Not my cup of tea, but it seems to me like as much a world sport as the other two, and the best players in the world play in the NBA, which would seem, even by your criteria, to put it on a par with “elite” soccer.

2. The “world game” idea is your subjective criterion. I figgered I could apply my own, namely, a game that tests a broad range of physical skills. Hand-eye coordination seems to me to be a crucial athletic skill.

3. That damn Grey Cup example. If you put that in just to goad your fellow countrymen, mission accomplished.

by cliffkoroll on Apr 3, 2010 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't really elevate soccer as an elite sport

It’s the level of competition that I was referring to. The top teams in Europe are absolutely stacked with the best soccer players in the world, much like the elite national teams (Brazil, Argentina, Spain). The same thing is true in Olympic hockey. On a Stanley Cup team, there’s still going to be fourth liners who are ho-hum, but Canada didn’t really have any mediocre players on their team, so the skill level of the hockey players on the ice was unparalleled.

I don’t think I ever mentioned the term “world game,” so I’m not sure why you keep referencing that. It’s a little confusing to be asked to defend something I never even said.

I really couldn’t care less about basketball, but you’re right to mention it. Olympic basketball, I assume, has an obscene amount of skill on the court at any one time, at least when the US is playing.

The Grey Cup was a joke, although that game was ridiculous.

I was trying to figure out how you came up with your list...

…I said it was a presumpton.

Olympic hockey is not on the same level as the Stanley Cup, becuase half the world’s talent is on one team.

How far would the bronze medal winning Finns get in the Stanley Cup playoffs?

I would guess a similar critique of the Wrold Cup vs. the elite soccer leagues could be made, and Olympic hoops vs. the NBA.

If you want to talk stacked, get a load of Sarah Spain the NBA has to take the cake, because of the small roster. Don’t really care for the game myself, but…

by cliffkoroll on Apr 3, 2010 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions

that's why i said

and i quote

a hockey Gold Medal game

but i don’t think you can make the same critique of skill level in World Cup soccer versus elite leagues. the big soccer nations have deep enough rosters that you don’t get second-rate talent very often.

Lakers-Celtics two years ago was probably at the top of the tier in terms of skill, but i don’t even know if there were any crazy comebacks in that series. (that series did happen, right?)

I've done so too

well, if being in a bar playing the India-Pakistan game for 20 minutes counts… but it is pretty intense!

I don’t know much about the sport but I’ve been told there have been changes made over the years that make it more… sporty? It certainly seems like there are some aspects of it that are more physically demanding than baseball.

by VerStig on Apr 3, 2010 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions

bowlers have more frequent rests

but what they do is sprinting, and they do it for an entire match.

cricket is purer, to me, as a sport than baseball. there are 11 players on field and they are the only 11 players who play. there is no subbing out pitchers; a bowler gets tired, he goes into the field and someone else takes over.

the big international tests are epic, but i still prefer baseball.

Saw a Seals game at the Coliseum.

Yes, in 1973. I am that old.

The wife & I saw a Canadiens game at Molson Centre on our honeymoon. (Told you I was a lucky fella.) That place was cool for two reasons: First, nothing but Stanley Cup banners everywhere you look. They don’t trifle with Conference banners. Second, we were there on free loose meat sandwich night. Yes. Free food. And since this was back in the Dollar Bill era at home, we were absolutely blown away. A hockey team GIVING AWAY FREE FOOD.

Last fall, checked out a Preds game in Nashvegas. Besides being chock full of Hawks fans, the two good things about that were the amount of room to walk around in the spacious concourse and the fact that all of the bars and music venues are right outside the door, so when the game’s over the party’s on.

The Bell Centre is the cathedral of hockey

It’s the mecca of all hockey just drenched with hockey history. It’ll never be the Forum (for those of us lucky enough to witness a game there) but it does hold a special place in every hockey fans heart.

Unfortuantely, that can get lost as it’s their obnoxious fans that eventually annoy the fuck out of you. But if you can ignore them it’s a wonderful building to watch a game at.

"The Golden Goal! And Canada has - once in a lifetime - Olympic Gold!"

Getting to Newark
Too bad they can’t get anyone to go out to games because it’s in fucking Newark.

It’s funny you say that though, because I got there and back ridiculously fast. It’s really easy access for New Yorkers and really for anyone with access to NJ Transit (i.e. a good part of Jersey). They actually do public transportation semi-right there.

by VerStig on Apr 2, 2010 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions

When we went

we drove up from South Jersey, which wasn’t bad at all. I was referring more to the fact that no one wants to go to Newark in the first place, because it’s kind of a shithole.

by gmh on Apr 2, 2010 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, it kind of is

Even my friends who either live there now or come from there tell me that.

But they do a really good job of insulating the place from the rest of Newark. From the train station (which is half decent) you go through a series of tunnels, through the Hilton, before you end up across the street from the Prudential Center. So you don’t really actually… see… Newark.

And, as gmh said, it really is a palace. I’d second the recommendation.

Oh yeah...

…Keith pinched in, leaving VERSTEEG!, at the blue line!! with the puck!!! as the last line of defense!!!! I just about shat myself.

He poked it away though.

My point is, sometimes (say, down a goal with 5 minutes left) there’s no substitute for a guy with his skills. And I reckon there’ll be at least a couple situations like that in the playoffs.

by cliffkoroll on Apr 3, 2010 12:02 AM CDT up reply actions

To be fair

I think sometimes VERSTEEG! is underrated as a two-way forward. But his intellectual gaffes when we’re attacking the other zone kind of overshadow that somewhat.

by VerStig on Apr 3, 2010 12:04 AM CDT up reply actions

He's on the PK

so not that underrated. except for that stretch where he refused to dump the puck in the neutral zone and caused a short handed goal. Then he was off the PK (and PP) for a bit until the Qstache didn’t want to kill him anymore.

by Katherine215 on Apr 3, 2010 12:06 AM CDT up reply actions

those were dark days

sort of. or was that when we were scoring on the PP? Hmm. I would fact-check but I really need to work.

by Katherine215 on Apr 3, 2010 12:04 AM CDT up reply actions

This sounds right

…but it’s the kinda thing you’ll see Kane or Hossa do sometimes. They generally don’t cough it up near the line, but I recall Kane costing us a game recently after drifting to ther line with the puck.

Dunc made the right read, assuming the puck-carrier has a brain.

But did you see that goal!! I’m sure that’s all the knuckleheaded remembers.

by cliffkoroll on Apr 3, 2010 12:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Kane did it

against Detroit. Datsyuk undressed him, and then Niemi. Fun times.

…that everyone has a role to play down the stretch…like Gollum.

by cliffkoroll on Apr 3, 2010 12:38 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

I know I sound like I don't like Versteeg

but that’s not true. He just frustrates me. I think he and everyone else will all play a part. It’ll be fun to look back and see where everyone contributes, too.

by Katherine215 on Apr 3, 2010 12:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I get that frustration

but at the same time, it’s only his second year playing at the NHL level, and while he’s no Kane, he’s got some potential. Maybe I’m looking at him through his Madonna glasses but the many times he’s set up Madden only to have Madden miss the shot or whiff— on a better line, that would have resulted in something.

And Kane last year, his sophomore season, was hardly as defensive as he is now. Didn’t he end the regular season with a -2 rating? If I recall correctly, last year he got some flak for that too.

I get the feeling around SCH that he’s trying too hard to pull off moves that he can’t make—it’s frustrating because it’s a risky play and more often than not it bites him in the ass. But at the same time, and this is my personal opinion, I’d really rather have a guy try too hard than never try at all. If he played safe and never took any of the risks he did, would we be content with what he does or would he pick on him like we do on Buff? There’s a guy with a lot of potential, but we just never see it. Sure, it’d be nice if he were just a little bit smarter some of the time, but when else would he learn how to do that if he didn’t play the way he did?

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

you make a l ot of good points

most of which I agree with. But the Kane comparison, I have a hang-up – Kane is 2 years younger, so while he might not have NHL experience, Versteeg does have 2 years in of AHL that should have worked some of these brain farts out of him. Agree with the line thing, I think mostly he’s just ended up the odd man out because we’re so deep, and it’s hurt his development.

by Katherine215 on Apr 3, 2010 9:48 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't want to delve into second-guessing their thought processes

but I consider NHL rookies to basically be rookies, no matter how old or young they are. There’s probably an exception to the rule here or there, but you learn the same things your first year, maybe go through similar problems of adjusting your second year, etc.

And I also think there are different levels of expectation from them. Kane was always expected to be a star. Nobody asked anything of Versteeg until they saw what he could do his first year. Sure, he spent 2 years in the AHL, but down in the “A” who even realized what he could do? The Bruins traded him away for Bochenski, after all—if he went unnoticed down there, then they either thought the brain farts were uncoachable or they didn’t really give it much thought.

That he made it out to the NHL, I feel, is more a product of him playing the way he does, taking the risks to get noticed when he does make the occasional brilliant play or something.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

definitely agree on the different levels of expectation

for Kane and Versteeg. But we see flashes of brilliance and still the same flashes of idiocy. How hard is it to learn to dump the puck? He’s had his ass stapled to the bench several times this year, and we still see many of the same things. I’m starting to question if he can learn from this stuff or he’s stuck in the same endless loop of great things and not-so-great things.

I mean, we’re operating under the assumption that he still will develop – how do we know he hasn’t peaked and this is just the type of player he will be.

Having said all that, I still think he’s a fun and exciting player, when I don’t want to kick him.

by Katherine215 on Apr 3, 2010 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions

"how do we know he hasn’t peaked and this is just the type of player he will be."

We don’t. But he’s only in his 2nd year in the NHL—he’s not a veteran by any means, and it did take Kane until his 3rd year to adapt to a defense-first mentality.

And here’s the thing— those flashes of brilliance and flashes of idiocy, to me, seem to be based off the same line of thinking for him, the same action. He will try to skate his way past an entire team and sometimes it’ll work, sometimes it won’t.

This goes back to the high-risk high-reward vs playing-safe mentality. But maybe he’s not trying to go into “play safe” mode. Maybe, instead, he’s trying to figure out how to successfully get past an entire team every time. (And I hope, whether he keeps playing here or not, that he does learn how to do it successfully every time.)

I’m not saying that’s right, necessarily, especially not if the game’s on the line, but Kane does the same thing, and the only reason people are unable to get him off the puck now is because he’s a lot stronger and quicker to recover. How many times have we watched in awe as Kane forced his way to the offensive zone with the puck on his stick?

Could it be something Versteeg works on? Absolutely. Will he ever reach the same level of skill that Kane has in doing it? Probably not. But he’s the closest to it that we have on the team—and I guess we can agree to disagree here. I just think it makes a little sense that he tries to develop it instead of taking it out of his game entirely.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

by chiblackhawks on Apr 3, 2010 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess I just think of "play safe"

as “play smart.” Recognize when to dump the puck, when to pass, etc. Agree he is still learning this and will (hopefully) improve. The “has he already peaked” comment was more just an idle thought than anything because we don’t know.

The difference I see between Kane and Versteeg is that Kane is more apt to recognize when he can or can’t get past an entire team. Kane tried it last night and lost the puck; next time around he dumped the puck and chased the dump in. I don’t know if we see this from Versteeg enough yet (statement not passive-aggressive speculation).

I don’t think I really disagree with you, I think I’m just more frustrated by him than you are. Or something like that. I don’t actually know anymore. :)

by Katherine215 on Apr 4, 2010 12:18 AM CDT up reply actions

I think the SCH guys said something similar

but I feel like the rules of playing smart are different for people of higher skill levels—which Kane is, and which Versteeg doesn’t realize he is (yet?)—so yeah, like I said, I can see where the frustration can come from.

Honestly, I think I just feel a little protective when so many people are so quick to criticize when his plays go bad but rarely acknowledge when those same plays result in good chances. Kinda like with Huet—Kris isn’t all refusal to dump the puck, and Huet isn’t all soft goals (well, until Columbus, sigh), but it’s become something of a trope around here and so every now and then I feel like I have to point out when the opposite is true.

rec'd for cleverness, but...

I was thinking in a slightly different direction, viz. can Versteeg actually experience a “brain fart”? Wouldn’t he need a brain for that?

by cliffkoroll on Apr 3, 2010 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Everyone has a brain

and is capable of brain farts. I think Versteeg’s has a smaller brain than most and that with the extra air in his skull he would have more brain farts than the average person.

you're right, if he took fewer risks

we probably would pick on him in a Buff-like fashion. When his risks pay-off, they pay off big, but then same of when they don’t work. Kind of similar to Brett Farve taking risks, but without the legend-status that Farve has (or the experience and maturity).

though he does add character to this team, I can’t see how they’d keep him past this this year, and in the long run that should be good for his development.

so I can’t agree or disagree or comment on the Favre analogy.

But yes, I agree with the 2nd part of your comment. I have no illusions that he’d stay past this season. There’s just no room for him on the team. Hopefully he gets shipped somewhere he’ll be able to develop as a player, though, but hopefully it’s somewhere in the East, so we don’t get the pleasure of facing him. I get the feeling he’s the sort of player who’d end up scoring against us just to spite us.

He was really bringing it

I’m fairly convinced that his puck-dumping reluctance is pretty much incorrigible. But, given what Sam said:

You saw the best and worst of Versteeg tonight. A little too often he tried to navigate the razor-wired minefield that is the neutral zone against New Jersey. But he never stopped trying, created more than enough, and was rewarded.

This might not be what he’s saying, but I’ll ask it anyway — are we to believe that maybe we should accept Steeger’s decision-making and find a way to use it to our advantage? Like, just in some kind of chaos-creating way? Maybe he’s a magnet for opposing players in the same way that Sopel is a magnet for pucks.

Not saying I agree with this idea, just thought I’d put it out there.

Thoughts on the game:

- Dustin Byfuglien was very good once again back on defence, although it helps to have D2K as his defence partner. He had one glaring turnover in the 3rd that forced Niemi to save his bacon, but overall I’ve been impressed with his decision making at the backend.

- Patrick Kane turned into a little Pavel Datsyuk last night with his uncanny way to strip every NJ defender of the puck. He was a thorn in their side all night as he made one beautiful strip off of Mottou and then a sweet dish to Bolland. Kaner was in full “limo ride” mode last night.

- This is why many of us prefered Niemi over Huet. When the ‘Hawks are outplayed for portions of a game it’s quite refreshing to have a netminder capable enough to bail out his team. There were plenty of turnovers out there, especially in the first half of the first period, but Niemi bailed the ‘Hawks out time and time again keeping it 1-0. He was the only reason why the ’Hawks weren’t trailing by more.

OK, that sounded more asshole-ish than I meant it. I see that now.

But yes, I was calling out hawk61 if by “us” he was including himself in that group – and that’s how I interpret it.

Also, the fact that the statement “this is why many of us preferred Niemi over Huet” is in the past tense suggests that Huet never kept the Hawks in the game and this clairvoyant “us” group had insight into the recent past. I seem to remember SCH being akin to the Borg hive mind and chanting “They’re both the same!”, including me. And now suddenly there is this group of “many of us” who could predict the future? I want some of that please!

I will again mention something I’ve stated before: I’ve been a bigger Niemi “fan” since December, but I’ve been a bigger and more vocal Huet “supporter”. Until the BJ collapse I was still cheering for Huet to be the starter come playoff time or possibly be in a platoon situation. It didn’t happen, but I’m not about to abort my former position.

It’s not because of the exorcism (which was funny) but rather your devotion in becoming the SCH mascot, lately, rather than forming a concrete opinion at times.

You know your stuff, but it seems you’re more intent to getting off the subject. It can’t be hockey all the time, but it has to be some of the time.

Other than that, I like you.

We do seem to be getting off topic

Way more than before, actually. Definitely understandable that we scared mjthor away. We didn’t get to 1000 comment threads on a daily basis talking about hockey.

Maybe we need to segregate this non-hockey stuff onto some kind of “off-day thread”…

Either that or maybe find a way to have multicolor highlighting of comments.

"we scared mjthor away"

No great loss there.

I like the colourful comments but sometimes it’s gets over-the-top and then becomes more of a twitter page than anything. It becomes 500 comments about nothing, Seinfeld like.

Wow, just fucking wow, Verstig

I didn’t see that one coming.

You joined on January 14th, just 2 weeks earlier than me – and almost the exact time the Hawks went into a slump – coincidence? Just throwing it out there.

You also have around 1,500 comments which I assume would put you in the top 10 of that list if not higher. Since this is coming from the person who also helped TP the site, copied HIBLD’s username, and greened meeshak on April 1st, I’m a bit bewildered on what your point is ?

Hey Mikey, he likes me!

Well, good news, we have found a new replacement as mascot once we get him housebroken.

Although I don’t think I waiver on my opinions often, I get that more hardcore “serious” hockey guys would prefer that this site remain a bit more on topic and i agree with you there. Things have really changed in the past few weeks, even since I joined. The number of comments are a partial indication of that.

Part of me feels that we were coping with the Hawks slump (which is hopefully over) with humor instead of going negative and making this a place of doom. I can appreciate what you’re saying and I think we can find a happy medium if you agree to be less like meeshak and slightly more funny.

Unless we make an effort

I don’t see that stuff going away, much. I think we’ve turned SCH into a way of life, and I feel a little guilty for shutting the purists out.

That said, I do find this place amazingly entertaining as an entire body of work. So maybe my idea sounds like a form of apartheid, maybe we can find some way to temper the off-topic stuff when people are expecting a higher % of hockey content?

by VerStig on Apr 3, 2010 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions

that's fair

It IS hard to weed through everything for the hockey commentary, which is what i originally came here for. And I’m guilty of contributing more off-topic crap than anything….so it’s a fair point.

by puppetmasterp on Apr 3, 2010 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions

it's a long season

i’ve gotten bored with commenting on the hockey, especially after our december domination gave way to more mundane games with good results. you can see the same thing in the game recaps, both here and at fifth feather. our host bloggers can’t really be expected to turn in 82 games worth of excellent commentary, and neither should we, especially as we’ve all gotten to know each other and form a community.

that sounded pissy, but i just mean a lot of us have been commenting for most of the season and are pretty commented out on this hockey team. maybe that means we I should shut up.

(170 g) * (3x10^8 m/s)^2 = 1.5x10^16 J

by meeshak on Apr 3, 2010 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I like the other stuff

I would be sad if it went away. And I still learn a lot about hockey here, so I think the site is still serving its initial purpose.

Most of the non-hockey related talk is before and after the games, rarely during.

Meeshak is right, it’s more of a community than just a hockey blog. There are a lot of people here with such similar interests, it always amazes me when there’s an obscure music reference that a lot of people get or movie lines that someone else completes.

I would still hang around if Sam and the Matts killed the non-hockey talk, but I hope they don’t. You can pick and choose what you follow along with and what you don’t, right?

by Katherine215 on Apr 4, 2010 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I agree

I definitely find the site more enjoyable than it already was (which is saying a lot) with all the riffraff. And if you look at this thread alone, we’ve actually brought up a lot of talking points that don’t involve goalies. So it’s not like we’re sacrificing that.

I think I was just more concerned about people who might get lost in the hundreds of comments that get posted now. Sure, you could go to another blog or (gasp) mainstream media to get in-depth analysis, but I think there are people who appreciate what gets discussed here.

That’s why I figured SBN is probably missing some feature that we (and probably just us) need. Maybe we should just start rec’ing good hockey talk more liberally now?

by VerStig on Apr 4, 2010 12:38 AM CDT up reply actions

You mean people might have lives

and be unable to keep up? I don’t think I know people like that. :)

I think a more liberal use of GDTs by period (or even just one for the first 2 periods, then the 3rd and beyond) would help. I agree that 900-1000 can be overwhelming.

But then again, isn’t the GDT supposed to be for live commenting? A casual SCH visitor probably isn’t going to be interested in our comments in the first place, so much as the initial blog postings of the editors.

by Katherine215 on Apr 4, 2010 12:57 AM CDT up reply actions

GDTs are fine, I think

We’re currently running up the comment total in a recap… hence my “off-day thread” idea

by VerStig on Apr 4, 2010 1:00 AM CDT up reply actions

It's a good idea,

I meant to say that before. Very often, Sam or somebody does post a Wednesday thoughts type of thread though, so that often helps keep the most recent thread from getting too large. But a Non-hockey talk thread might be good. But some of the best stuff comes out of hockey comments so who knows.

My thoughts on OT:

Do ever wish that a game like last night would just have an intermission and then a 20-minute 4-on-4 period to decide the winner? Same here. It was one, of many, rules that I loved about the Olympics that the OT sessions were longer. 5 minutes is useless, in fact I’m more suprised if someone scores rather than it going to a shootout.

If 20 minutes doesn’t decide a winner then have a shootout. I’d have no problems then, but 15 shootouts in a season is excessive and the ‘Hawks aren’t the only team with that many games needing to go to the extra punt/pass/kick competition.

Supposedly there is going to be another competition comittee meeting this summer and one of the topic of discussions is going to be about extending the OT’s. Dear Brian Campbell, make it happen.
Let a hockey play decide the game not a skills competition, at least not this often.

I like the idea

but I think 20 minutes is too long for the regular season. that adds up over time, especially for teams that go to OT a lot. I could see 10 minutes but not 20.

by Katherine215 on Apr 3, 2010 9:50 AM CDT up reply actions

But even with 5 minutes...

…lots of game don’t go to shootout. I say 4-on-4 and turn off the clock. Very few games would go beyond 10 minutes.

A Caps and Hawks game

that goes to OT is mediocre? A 0-0 Preds/Detroit game with playoff implications is mediocre? Extra innings in baseball is mediocre? More likely, the teams are well matched and it’s a tight game. I don’t think it’s always a case of mediocrity at all.

by Katherine215 on Apr 4, 2010 12:39 AM CDT up reply actions

I have got to agree with the above.

Extra inning baseball is exciting, and one of the most exiting Hockey Games I have been to was Game 2 of the 2005 Calder Cup finals. 2OT 2-1 final score. Some asshole named Patrick Sharp scored both goals for the PHI Phantoms to beat the Wolves. Fucker wonder what ever happened to him.

I didn't say OT was mediocre

I said teams that go to OT a lot deserve to be worn down. If you can’t close out the game in regulation, then you shouldn’t be on the same footing as teams that consistently can. Baseball teams that go to extra innings all the time get tired out (their pitching rotations, especially bullpens, more than the other players).

If you’re going to OT 30 times in an 82 game season, then you’re going to OT against teams with a lot of different skill levels. A full 20 minutes of 4-on-4 wouldn’t be unfair in that case.

(170 g) * (3x10^8 m/s)^2 = 1.5x10^16 J

by meeshak on Apr 4, 2010 12:58 AM CDT up reply actions

I was referring to the quality of the teams

Caps vs. Hawks isn’t 2 mediocre teams playing each other. This would punish teams in a division like the Southeast where there are a lot of poor/mediocre teams that play each other and, combined with playing other average to below average Eastern teams would play 30+ games against teams of that caliber. I don’t know how many end up in OT, but I would have to guess the percentage is higher than a Caps vs. Lightning type of game, on average. I think you would widen the gap between the very good and very bad.

by Katherine215 on Apr 4, 2010 1:03 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure that was his point

I don’t think meeshak was disputing that OT is exciting, but rather that if they keep ending up playing in OT and get worn down because of it, it’s their fault for not winning in regulation more.

Case in point: Bulls-Celtics last year was EPIC, but after we lost, I guess you could take some comfort in Boston being tired after. Kinda.

I also loved this about Olympic hockey

like Katherine said, maybe not 20 min b/c that’ll kill players in the long run (esp those like Keith who already play a lot of minutes), but 10 I could live with. 5 min is generally too short, and with more OT time, you’d see more teams actually looking to score instead of playing for the shootout.

by puppetmasterp on Apr 3, 2010 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I like 10min 4 on 4 than play the Keg Toss

I would still prefer the SO be dropped in favor of something that combine team play Offense and Defense though (2-1 or 3-2 breakaways best of 3 or 5 than sudden win)

If it works don't go and F*** it up!

Interesting idea

This would be HORRIBLE for the ’Hawks, but one idea might be to borrow the concept of college football OT and do 2 minute power plays on each side… if you score the other team has a chance to tie.

by VerStig on Apr 4, 2010 12:58 AM CDT up reply actions

one of the reasons for shorter OT times in teh regular season is teams flying commercial instead of charter

the games have to be of limited maximum duration so the teams can get to the airport

Sort of silly, but its an oddball real world limit impinging on our fun

Exactly What We Needed

After last game against the Wild, what the Hawks needed was a sustained team effort. Great all around game last night against NJ.

Unfortunately, I was out at Happy Hour here on the West Coast, but I did manage to watch the recap in my drunken stupor when I stumbled back home.

Kane: Looked great. As others have stated, he had a great active stick while defending and managed to strip the puck and create plays. More of this, please!

Niemi: This kid is looking huge in the net. Excellent save on Parise on the shootout.

Looking forward to Calgary.

got the chance to

watch the game live night. It’s the first live Hawks game I’ve been to since 2002. The most astonishing aspect of this team is how good Buff can be when he wants to be. He’s got a menacing presence on the ice that you don’t really get to witness on teevee. He takes way too many plays off though and I suppose that’s why many of us are so down on him.

Other observations:
Hossa is smoother live then on t.v., if you can believe it. Sharp is an insanely hard worker.

Some Hawks fan behind me kept talking about Huet’s performance last night. I wanted to flick a booger on him.

Devil fans are douchebags. Their meek “Rangers suck” chant every 10 minutes or so is about the lamest fan tradition ever.

Hawks win. They might have been sluggish at times (playing a really good team on the road), but they didn’t completely collapse and this was the type of win I’ve been waiting for them to pull off for some time.

by aeroplane on Apr 3, 2010 12:13 PM CDT reply actions

The top line was chocolate truffle amazing to watch

while they were still together… they were pretty much the only ones who had anything going through the first two periods. As for Sharpie — I think after a lot of the talk earlier in the year about how he might be a candidate for cap relief — I really hope we keep him. He wears the “A” well. Throughout the last month I think he’s tried as hard as anybody to get the Hawks out of their slump.

Re: Huet — lol! A bunch of Devils fans were booing him too. I was like… um, isn’t he on the bench?

by VerStig on Apr 3, 2010 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree on Sharp

Accoding to the CI, the Hawks record when “Sharp floats around and doesn’t do much” has been stuck on 7-5-1 since early in the year. This is consistent with your (and my) impression that he has given a reliably solid effort this year (and the fact that CI ws tracking this suggests it wasn’t the case in the past.)

In fact, the veteran leadership (Sharp, Hossa, Madden, Keith, Campbell) is maybe the biggest difference from last year’s team (plus, the young guys keep getting better as expected.)

by cliffkoroll on Apr 3, 2010 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Gotta say

I long for the makeup of the top two lines when Hossa came back.

Toews / Kane / Brouwer

Sharp / Hossa / Ladd

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I like Incubus, but c'mon Primus "Anti-Goal" is the shit!

The great underrated “Anti-Pop” c.d. from Primus did not sell in 1999 and Primus has never recovered. Its too bad, because it kicks serious ass and is represented by a confusing and wacky song on their “Singles” c.d. (“Coattails of A Deadman”) Primus still tours occasionally but their recorded output went south after this. Just to prove that Les Claypool is not Primus listen to one of his solo records and then put on “Anti-Pop”, its almost like he realised that it was too much work to keep it up so he just turned out lukewarm versions of Primus songs by himself. Go Hawks!

I was picking through the rubble over at "In Lou we Trust"...

…and came across this from the game wrap:

Sixth: While Antti Niemi was clearly the most important Blackhawk tonight, I felt Duncan Keith was great tonight. He played 28:51 and was calm throughout the whole night. Watching him tonight was like watching Drew Doughty and Erik Johnson, other young defensemen who impressed me with how composed they were while doing all of the dirty work at both ends. I’m glad the Devils only have to deal with him a couple of games per season.

We see Dunc every night, and we’re spoiled. Didn’t even rate a mention in the SCH wrap, but the view from outside can be illuminating.

Did you hear Tom Baker got beat out on a poll of “all time greatest Dr. Who?” I was surprised.

by puppetmasterp on Apr 4, 2010 9:00 AM CDT up reply actions

my friend was Eccleston all the way

but Tennant eventually won her over.

And yeah, I saw that—Tennant won, didn’t he? Pretty sure that was only because the voters were more exposed to this Who than the old series.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

i also suspect

that it may have been a biased polling.

New Doctor (Matt Smith) was on BBC Radio 1’s Chris Moyles show last week (which i listen to pretty regularly), guest hosted by Zane Lowe though. Zane pointed out that that Smith is already known among Brit viewers, so he may have an easier time filling Tennant’s shoes. But Zane also pointed out it’ll be tough b/c “the ladies love them some Tennant.”

This is true. So if the poll had a majority of women respondants, the “ooh, David Tennant is pretty” factor may have come into play.

by puppetmasterp on Apr 4, 2010 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions

haha, true

isn’t that kind of why some Who purists are also a bit “meh” about the series? RTD has sort of. Changed the dynamic or something. The Doctor was never meant to be a leading man sort.

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

yeah, i think you're right there.

That being said, i’ll admit i do love me some Tennant. But I can at least piece him apart from the Dr. Who character….

now I’m bored and watching LOTR (again)…..switching back and forth between that and Dr. Who.

I blame you both.

Anyone want to buy tix to tomorrow's game?

Sec 324 row 7 seats 11 and 12. They are good seats (they’re my friend’s tickets but part of the partial plan I share with him.) Face is $45 each. Let me know.

by Katherine215 on Apr 4, 2010 12:03 AM CDT reply actions

I wish I could

but it’s Easter and all, so the timing won’t work out for me, especially since it’s an afternoon game.

by ahnfire on Apr 4, 2010 12:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's why he doesn't want to go

though why he waited until the last minute to decide this is beyond me. Apparently, it was my fault for not putting Easter on the calendar I made of conflicts with Bears and Cubs games when we got our 9 game packs. You can see what my priorities were!

by Katherine215 on Apr 4, 2010 1:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Wait, what?

Bears & Cubs tickets? I’m…confused. Unless that was your point.

by ahnfire on Apr 4, 2010 1:13 AM CDT up reply actions

oiy, it made so much sense in my head.

I have 2 9-game packs I share with 2 friends. when we got our games, I compared the dates to the bears and cubs schedules for conflicts and made a little calendar. I neglected to note Easter as a conflict and have been given grief over it by the friend who picked tomorrow’s game not knowing it was Easter. Because apparently he’s never looked at a calendar before.

anyway, too much info, I know. Sorry!

by Katherine215 on Apr 4, 2010 1:18 AM CDT up reply actions

no, that makes sense.

it finally just clicked for me when I realized that hockey season overlaps with football & baseball. I am a bad Bears/Cubs/sports fan for not remembering.

no, i reread it

It was bad sentence structure all around! easily confusing.

by Katherine215 on Apr 4, 2010 1:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Ah! If only!

I have a friend who would love to go with me. But, Easter isn’t something I can get out of (nor would I want to; it’s the only weekend all year I get to cook lamb and have other people eat it).

But maybe I should take my mom...

We went to the game last year when the Hawks clinched a playoff spot. With the division still (technically) up for grabs, maybe she’d be good luck?

a 3 game winning streak

would be a good way to exit the easter weekend. how soon do you need to know about the tix, assuming they’re still available.

I’ll probably end up going if no one wants them. Maybe tomorrow morning by 11ish?

i'll let you know

drop you an email tomorrow morning if i can, somehow, talk my mom into going.

I’m sort of sorry I missed the hawks61/CNS “discussion” earlier.

by Katherine215 on Apr 4, 2010 1:42 AM CDT up reply actions

it was pretty fun live

it confuses me when people don’t like each other on this site. i understand not getting along, but no one really rubs me the wrong way (except those huaters i mentioned earlier; they got annoying in their singular insights into the goalie situation).

but mjthor has his HIBLD, and i guess hawks61 has his CNS.

by meeshak on Apr 4, 2010 1:47 AM CDT up reply actions

mjthor doesn't like HIBLD?

I didn’t think HIBLD said anything other than HIBLD. I hate the Huaters as well, but now that I’m thinking about it, I don’t think there’s anyone I dislike either. That’s abnormal for me, as I’m usually not very patient with people.

anyway, i’m going to bed. let me know about the tix when you know.

by Katherine215 on Apr 4, 2010 2:07 AM CDT up reply actions

I thought mjthor hated most people...

…incuding me. I wonder if any of the old timers can add to this.

It’s a loss to the site, because his torchings were brilliant and withering.

Things that might mildly irritate you or me would drive him nuts, and he didn’t hold his peace. I think there is a correlation between a low threshold for suffering fools and comedic skill, and thor exemplified this.

Definitely knows his hockey too, though, since I don’t do GDTs, I only saw a small slice of his output, and a lot of it was not hockey-related.

Ultimately, I don’t think it was non-hockey stuff that drove him away, as much as an overflow of general stupidity, which his system doesn’t process well. He had to leave for his health.

This is a reply to multiple comments

hawk61 First of, the “discussion” between me and hawks61. What happened at the bottom of the page actually occurred before the top. I think we made our peace. Me calling him “boring as fuck” was meant to be humorous, because it is a ludicrous statement on so many levels, I think hawks61 got it. I also got his point, ultimately this is a site about hockey and hawks61 was here in the old days when it was easier to find more “pure” content. I was also (partly) wrong for calling him out. I have a ridiculous memory that often gets me in trouble and I recalled one single statement with which to nail him to the cross (Happy Easter?). I spent some time reading other previous comments from him and his point seems to be that the coaching staff was partially to blame for Huet’s demise.

VerStig I believe he/she/it was trying to be humorous, but the timing was bad and I think I completely missed it. . I was still heated. My bad. My apologies.

mjthor I find it humorous when people suggest he was “scared away”. I doubt mjthor would be scared of a battle of wit with anyone. His combination of intelligence, wit, and mastery of the English language is unmatched. People come and go from SCH, but his disappearance is more visible. As cliff suggested, he didn’t seem to handle the growth of SCH well and on at least one occasion went out of his way to make the GDT a miserable place. That’s his choice and we have bad days (Hi, my name is kettle). I tend to believe that mjthor is focusing more on his “real” life and if that is the case, we should all be happy for him. I don’t know him, but he has what seems to be a reward life as a teacher, is active with his running, and last I heard, he had a beautiful girlfriend who is hopefully taking up a larger chunk of his time.

With all that said, what happened yesterday was a good cleansing which is needed once in a while to get back to the reason we’re all here, the Hawks. There’s room for informative content as well as humor, we just need to be respectful of each other and find a happy medium.

Well, folks, I want to thank you for being here for the recording of my live comedy album. Funny material and laughter will be dubbed in later.

I think this just means that I need to watch the original trilogy again.
