Dat Horsa Guy Avoids Suspension
From Colin Campbell and the wheel of justice:
"I have made the decision that this play does not warrant supplemental discipline after considering all of the facts, including reviewing the video and speaking with Mr. Hossa," said Campbell. "This play is distinguishable from recent incidents by a number of factors, including the degree of contact involved; the fact that the consequences of the play do not appear to be as severe; that this was a hockey play involving a race for the puck; that Mr. Hossa is not a repeat offender; and that the call of a major penalty by the referee was significant and appropriate."
That about sums it up right there.

The NHL actually got something right
with this decision, imo. The key to me was “a hockey play involving a race for the puck.” Time for game 6!

I agree completely
The only reason I disagreed with a suspension is that he was clearly trying to get the puck. Hossa is not a dirty player.

Great news...
I was afraid the folks responsible for making this decision were going to bite off on the popular Hossa’s hit = Ovie’s hit theory. Which, as it’s been stated, is just false.

The Grace of God was the reason Dan Hamhuis wasn't carried off on a stretcher (same for Campbell).
It was a dangerous hit in a very, very vulnerable area with NOWHERE, I repeat NOWHERE for Hamhuis to go, except headfirst into the boards (same for Campbell).
Hossa is not a repeat offender and seems like an honorable man.
I think “no suspension” was the wrong call.

OK, so the NHL rulebook now has a "no check" zone 4 to 8 feet from the boards?

it was a collision at the point and moment in time of playing the puck
if one can no longer check someone right when and where the puck was, then you’ve instituted a “no check” zone wherever it is that you can’t hit.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
Stop the tape the moment before Hossa pushes him.
That scenario presents itself at least 5 – 10 times every game. Please explain to me why there aren’t more of these “collisions,” as you call them, where the player ends up going head first into the boards.
My answer is the trailing player doesn’t push. Players are smart / decent enough not to push. Enough pushing and we will see some Paraplegics.
I’m a Hawks fan. I’m glad Hossa is playing tonight, but for the good of the game, he shouldn’t be.
larry. A kind word for everyone.
better answer - the player who knows the contact is likely coming gets ready for it
not every hard hit results in someone getting run over/injured because the person getting hit acts prepared for it
Confusion will be my epitaph.
and enough of these sorts of hits
and we’ll see some thinking about players not exposing themselves to such things like they so commonly do now.
Remember, 20 years ago (and more – like when I played) hitting from behind was not even against the rules. And we had LESS of a problem with this sort of thing. The rare problems were addressed by adopting the current rule base and mindset, and the problem is now WORSE. When your “solution” makes the problem worse, it is time to rethink that solution (and maybe listen better to the people who accurately predicted that such solution would make things worse in precisely the manner that did indeed occur).
Confusion will be my epitaph.
IMO...
…the game in general has really sped up compared to years past. If you watch highlights of a game from 20-30 years ago, the flow of the game just seems a heck of a lot slower, with more time to make decisions.
Today’s game is almost like watching a pinball machine at times, with the puck bouncing all over the place.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
I wonder if some of it is rules changes that give more speed
at the cost of players not protecting themselves as well
Confusion will be my epitaph.
Could be...
…and I think players are so quick, they can get on top of a guy a lot quicker.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
Maybe better equipment too
I don’t know that people have “evolved” that much in 20 years
Confusion will be my epitaph.
In blocking shots...
…I think it is huge, as players don’t have the same fear they used to in that regard.
I played high school hockey 30 years ago, and I know the skates are a lot lighter, but I also think today’s players are just so much bigger and stronger (because of conditioning) than they were from years back.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
Agree...
…There is a real fine line here, and that line will never be perfectly defined.
There were clear differences between the Hossa and Ovechkin cases, and I think the league actually did a really good job of explaining it.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
I find it amusing
that they refer to him as “Mr. Hossa.”
Colin Campbell sez:
“I have made the decision that this play does not warrant supplemental discipline after considering all of the facts, including reviewing the video and speaking with Dat Horsa Guy,” said Campbell. “This play is distinguishable from recent incidents by a number of factors, including the degree of contact involved; the fact that the consequences of the play do not appear to be as severe; that this was a hockey play involving a race for the puck; that Dat Horsa Guy is not a repeat offender; and that the call of a major penalty by the referee was significant and appropriate.”

Exactly the right call
for exactly the reasons stated by the league.
The major was absolutely the right call on the ice. It was a dangerous play.
The issue the league always faces on suspension calls is the tricky area of “mens rea” — attempting to assess the state of mind of the perpetrator. The context within the game and the history/reputation of the player are two important components.
In the case of Ovechkin, it’s not that the Campbell hit itself was so egregious taken in a vacuum. It was the fact that Ovechkin had demonstrated a history of aggressive play combined with simply not caring what the outcome of his actions are. In the case of both the Kopecky hit from Thursday and the Hossa hit from Saturday, there was ample evidence — both from the context and the history of the players — that there was no need for supplemental discipline.

Wow, A+ for effort
I don’t think you leave much room for argument, but concluding that they aren’t the same doesn’t say that much… anybody who thinks that really must be blind. It’s probably just a function of being frustrated about the punishment, which you made the great point about being a different issue.
I don’t think they’re THAT close to the same, but there certainly are similarities. The big difference is OV pushed a lot harder and the puck was further away.

Anyone arguing that this hit = Ovechkin's
is an idiot. Watch the two videos. Watch Ovechkin’s cross check and follow through, completely with full arm extension; hell, he went so hard at Campbell he himself flew into the boards. Hossa put a hand on the guy’s back and, in the words of the moronic Eddie O, gave him “a quick little push from behind” before going to play the puck. Fuck you Eddie, fuck you Burnside, and fuck you Melrose, as you have no idea what you’re talking about.

To me it looked like shoulder to back hitting the boards, not head, and you have already pointed out, Hossa was not trying to injure.

have to disagree on that
Yes, it was a play made in pursuit of the puck and no, Hossa had no intent to injure. But that play in that location was dangerous. Hossa’s mistake injured and player and could have lead to much worse. You cannot have players doing that — even unintentionally. To prevent that, you need players to think about the consequences of doing so. A major achieves that.
by kcr on Apr 25, 2010 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
disagree - the contact took place almost immediately at the play of the puck
Hamhuis knew (or should have known) that contact was imminent.
Hamhuis should have been protecting himself a litle bit – he was in dangerous teritory and did nothing to avoid or limit his exposure.
The hit was not late, was not blindside or unexpected.
The rules aren’t intended to create a no touch zone 4 to 10 feet from the boards.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
It's such a gray area open to interpretation
hence the way the rules are written to allow for interpretation. I know what you;re saying, but I’m really not sure if I agree with you or not. It was definitely a play for the puck, whereas Ovie’s push was not. I’m not sure Hamhuis could have protected himself either though, so is it Hossa’s job to look after Hamhuis’ safety? I’m lost in that gray area, especially after what happened to Campbell. Glad I’m not a ref.

Krome
You can hit. You CANNOT hit from behind. It’s a good rule/guideline. If you hit from behind and the on ice ref calls 5 minute for boarding, you should be gone for 2 games +. It will put a stop to this.
Rules change, and with the exception of some of the instigator rules, mostly for the better. Look at how much faster the game is today with the calling of interference/hooking. Much better to watch, and teams still find a way to trap and run pick plays.
Chewing gum?
I still think major/no suspension is fair in this case
key language:
this was a hockey play involving a race for the puck
Final minute of the game, guys are going balls out. It’s an inherently dangerous situation. The push came because Hamhuis put on the brakes when he arrived at the puck.
Ovi, on the other hand, was “finishing a check” on a guy who had gotten rid of the puck.

One thing to keep in mind
Obviously Nashville fans wanted to see Hossa suspended, but there’s a bit of history which makes this doubly frustrating. In previous series against San Jose, Scott Hartnell and Alex Radulov were suspended for a game on similarly marginal calls. The Sharks involved went down like they’d been shot, and (then-coach) Ron Wilson cried to the press about how the victims would be lucky to come back at all in the series – but surprisingly they both came right back the next game, after the suspensions were announced.
More fun than a stick to the face!
On the Forecheck is SB Nation's blog covering the Nashville Predators.
that is definitely be cause for frustration
especially since everyone keeps saying “no one gets suspended in the playoffs”.

But not be the primary justification for or against punishment, but as an addendum basically. If a guy is completely reckless and ends anothers career it should factor in ONLY AFTER it has been determined it warrants punishment. Injury should not factor into that aspect of it, only the extent of Punishment itself.

Green is a stud, such a smooth skater and fairly solid defensively. But, I will say after this series that Weber is much more deserving. His positioning is flawless, he throws his weight around very effectively and responsibly, and his shot is simply awesome. I was at games 1 and 2, and his shot made me gasp all the way up in the 300 level.

I agree that Green is the third wheel in the Norris race. And the fact he’s having his ass handed to him by the Habs’ forecheck isn’t helping his cause much, either. All of this pretty much begs the question: when will Duncan get his own Geico commercial?

As hard as it is to have a favorite in the same division. But our competition is Scum, the Blues, and the Blue Jackets, so I think both our teams are easily at the top in the likeability factor there!
Actually, that might be true at this point.
The Blue Jackets are more sad in a cute sort of way, though. Kinda like giving your little brother a swirly. Nashville is (IIRC) 28-3-1 in their last 32 games against CBJ. They’re like the kid you keep beating the shit out of who keeps wanting more.

Creepy??
That’s a new one. C’mon after all that Hossa/mafia talk way back when, this is “pure win”.

And besides
I’m a fan of hockey, not just the Hawks. I know this pic could be used as “ammunition” by the other side. If so, so be it. I’m not above poking a little fun at my own team. If some Preds fans want to use this as a reason to wallow a bit longer in their cries of “Bullshit!”, I’m more than happy to add to their despair.

I know, I know
Just felt like I needed to clarify before some of the non-regs start blaming me for endangering the lives of Hawks fans in Nashville.

This won't help the brave souls...
…marching into Nashville with 81 on their backs.
I forgot that Hossa also erased Hornqvist.
Good luck, Hawks Nation! You’re the tip of the tip.

I wore my Hossa jersey in Nashville
the morning after the incident. People seemed to cross the street to get away from me.
I’m sure it was the jersey and the mafia implications, right??

Sadly
I think we have beaten this joke to death. Meeshak, could you do/say something to give us a new joke? something new to get us through the playoffs.

next thing you know
you’ll be aggitating to retire the KtG or hooker boot references (but, oddly enough, probably not the being mom’s favorite thing)
Confusion will be my epitaph.
I already tried to get
KtG retired, or at least changed. I was outvoted.
